    Ridley Scott In Fine Form

Setting all the original Kevin Spacey controversy and the recasting aside, I'll focus on the fact that this is one of Ridley Scott's best films. I'll watch anything he does. Although it seems that lots of dramatic liberties were taken with the true story it's based on, "All the Money in the World" is a terrifically tense, compelling, visually stunning (of course), slow burn of a thriller. Michelle Williams gives perhaps her best performance to date. And of course the great, great Christopher Plummer gives a jaw-droppingly magnificent and brilliant performance in what had to be a whiplash turnaround time. Highly recommended.

All the Money in the World delivers the typically strong score from a new release film. It's lifelike, fluid, and offers abundantly rich and detailed notes. It boasts good firm delivery, effortless spacing, and a well realized low end support. Sound effects are efficient and perfectly positioned. A train slowly rumbles to a stop early in the film with powerful stage traversal. Outdoor insects buzz around the listener in chapter three. Deep, dense shotgun blasts in chapter four explode with a distinct crack to the sides and rear. Bustling din that accompanies a gaggle of reporters places the listener in the middle of the crowd. Office ambience engulfs the listener in chapter 11. The track is filled with a number of intensely defined, largely spaced, and perfectly proportioned support effects. It's an active, engaging listen that handles every element with striking precision, often presenting larger than its 5.1 channels suggest. Dialogue is, of course, clear and well defined with firm front-center positioning.

Imperfect but intriguing Ridley Scott film

The Ridley Scott film, “All the Money in the World” – a terrific film telling the 1973 real-life abduction of the 16-year-old-son of the richest man in the world, J. Paul Getty – might have been a Best Picture candidate (due to its excellent scripting, production design, directing and acting) had it not been for the totally gratuitous scenes of the security man advising Getty’s wife, poorly played by Mark Wahlberg as if he were the film’s main star, scenes that bog the film down in talky, contrived plot padding. He is an irritating wrong note in an otherwise superb movie that I highly recommend. My guess is that Wahlberg created this unfortunate infirmity by insisting his part be expanded to make his character assume an ersatz importance. But, by all means, check out this excellent movie anyway.

    Interesting, intriguing, real life tragedy

This movie based on the actual story of the grandson of one of the richest men in the world at that time--J Paul Getty--will keep you on the edge of your seat. It is an interesting story and a sad one. The dilemma that Getty's daughter-in-law faced was real and that makes the movie all the more interesting and disturbing. Not for the faint of heart, it does get a bit gory at a couple of places. I recommend it!

This movie kept me on the edge of my seat!! I cannot believe some of the things that happen in this movie! It is crazy how people can see the world from a small perspective that they are not willing to help family. This story is tragic and I do not want to say much! In the end, watch this movie and it is one of the best movies I own.

    Underrated Film

Maybe it was the rushed marketing campaign following the ouster of Kevin Spacey in a crowded release window or maybe it was the non-descriptvtitle but this film got completely lost upon its release last Xmas and that’s too bad. It’s really pretty great and at this sale price, it’s worth owning especially if you’re a fan of Ridley Scott’s work like me.

    Another great period piece

Fascinating story of J Paul Getty, his family, and the kidnapping. True story. Great direction, writing, acting etc. Ridley Scott did an excellent job of substituting Kevin Spacey with Christopher Plummer. When you find out that it was less than two months before the film was supposed to be released that the substitution was made and they reshot all of the scenes? You'll flip out it was great!

What we do for love--of money

    |
    Posted .

Base on the true events of J. Paul Getty and his grandson's kidnapping, this tale is not uplifting. Yet it captures our attention regarding how money gets between us and our loved ones. Beware of a graphic scene of what the kidnappers do to the grandson to get the attention of the eccentric Getty.

It's amazing that this movie turned out so well after all of Kevin Spacey's scenes were reshot. Christopher Plummer as great as a greedy old JP Getty. Hard to believe anyone could be that hardhearted. Good acting and a decent plot based on real events.

    Ridley Scott’s good movie

    |
    Posted .

Preface by saying Ridley Scott is a fantastic director and has plenty of classics under his belt. With him being the most prolific director, he will however have a couple of duds. This movie is not one of them. It’s more along the lines of American gangster, long movie but with great performances.
