Great Tool For Kids

My Grandson is three years old and since I am retired he stays w/ me while my son and daughter in law work. And needless to say at the end of ten hours I am totally exhausted chasing a three year old around. So I had been looking at “things” to capture his attention and allow me time to do things that I need to do.
When I knew I was going to receive this I began to wonder how he would be able to interact w/ this being three years of age. Granted, Alexa sometimes has a hard time understanding him as I do w/ the way he enunciates his words, but that being said it seems as if everyday it gets better.
I just sit back and watch now that he has become familiar w/ what to say, what to touch and how to advance to the “next big thing” in his little mind. First of all, the color that Amazon has made these is appealing to him. The screen is just the right size for his age as well. We have the Echo 10 3rd Generation and he doesn’t understand why “his Alexa” doesn’t “walk” (turn) with him. He loves how HE can talk to her and she does what he wants her to do. He is in to dinosaurs and to watch him as he interacts w/ the device is amazing, and he has learned more about dinosaurs. It does say that there is an extra microphone designed to help w/ that. And it does in fact help. Just the other day he wanted to play a movie and it took a while for the device to completely understand what he was saying, but he finally got it to play. I love the fact that we can set time limits of how often and how long he can be on it.
He loves to sing and I didn’t know there were so many kids songs out there just for kids. He has his favorites and it’s amazing how he and the Echo Show 5 kids “communicate”. I must admit, I didn’t think that it would be this easy for him to use and interact w/, and granted there has been a learning curve, but I am pleasantly surprised at how well this is designed for kids and how easy it is for them to use.
The content is unlimited, he plays songs, watches movies, plays games, and the great thing is you can at the end of the day see everything that he has used. This is a great idea for kids, to be used by kids, and if you were on the fence about this as I was in the beginning, rest assured it is well worth it!

Amazon are the pioneers of smart speakers and smart displays, dating back to 2014 when they released the first smart speaker and 2017 for the first smart display. One thing people know when it comes to these things is it’s an Amazon product with Alexa.
At $99.99 you have a lot to like about the new 3rd generation. It comes with improved speakers which do offer a better sound quality over previous generations and perfectly acceptable for a device of this size and cost. While they don’t have the deep lows of more expansive and larger speakers they still sound great for your kids to use.
The display is 5.5 inches and looks good. It also touch screen so your kids can interact. No problem here with the display.
Setup is extremely easy, just connect to wood and setup your kids profile, Fire OS is really easy to work with as it’s a fork from Android so everything should look familiar if you’re an android user.
My son is autistic and absolutely loves talking to this device, he asks so many questions which help him with is speech delay and also helps him with his motor skills using the touchscreen.
There is plenty to do for your child on here and it’s not brain numbing garbage. This is a great way to get your child use to the modern day tech that surrounds us and will assist in making this completely normal as they grow.
The only downside is the Amazon sales connected to some of the things. I know Amazon need to push sales through these as that’s likely most of the profit bargain.
Overall my son loves this, he calls it his robot and talks to it all the time and his face lights up when Alexa responds back to him.
I think this is a must have for most kids and I would highly recommend this for any child with learning difficulties.

My 9 and 5 year old share a room. This is their review:
Pros
- I like space galaxy colors style. Its really cool.
- It has games I can play with
- I set my alarm each morning with this
- I like the stories it tells me at night
- I like the jokes Alexa says. Its really funny
Cons
- The screen is small not as big as my ipad. I cant watch shows because its too small.
- There is a video camera on it my parents tell me to keep the lens closed.
I give it 5 stars
OK OK now from a parent perspective.
Pros
- It’s a great fit and style in my kids room. They were excited with the different options
- Keeps the kids busy for a few minute and its functional. Like reading bed time stories at night.
- App make for easy control on turn things on and off
- Surprisingly the speaker are pretty good. At the highest level there is some distortion but overall quality is good.
- Good edition if you have the Alexa eco system
- Camera can physically be closed and turned off
Cons
- Monthly subscription to setup. This was a major turn off. I couldn’t get past setup. Yes they give you a year free but it just feels like a money grab from Amazon.
- There is a camera built in. To have a camera inside my kids room ?? But it can physically be closed
- If you don’t have Alexa eco system it stands alone in your house
- To me its like a 5in plug in tablet.
I can see why my kids like this but as a parent I am a little annoyed with all the cons. I understand why there is a camera for video calls which work pretty. If you are looking for an alarm clock for your kids room and you have the Alexa

Bottom Line: The Echo Show 5 Kids works well for kids who want more than a smart speaker but aren’t ready for a smartphone.
Parent’s perspective: I got this as an upgrade to my 8-year old’s Echo Dot Kids, and so we were already pretty familiar with Amazon Kids+ content (1 year subscription is included). My child has always enjoyed the audio games (e.g., lemonade stand) and bedtime stories. The Show adds the ability to display song lyrics, play kids’ TV shows, and video call with the built in camera. All of these are nice upgrades to just a smart speaker. I also really like that we can access the camera from our phones, since we got rid of the baby monitor a few years ago. Parental controls let you set filters and time limits. Although I am not the primary user of the device, I found that while the touch screen works well, the device was a little sluggish, particularly starting / stopping video content.
Kid’s perspective: My 8 year old loves the upgrade. She’s recently become more aware of time, and being able to see the time rather than ask for it has been helpful. She also likes that the device is stationary in her room, which means she has more ownership over the device rather than her tablet which we control when she’s able to access it.

The Amazon Echo Show Kids (3rd Gen) works seamlessly with the other Alexa devices in my home. Right out of the box, it was fast and easy to setup. Within a couple minutes, we were ready to go.
It responds just like any other Echo device with the benefit of having a small 5.5 inch screen. Music plays great and the sound quality is really great for its size. It will also play videos and shows from Amazon Kids and is easy to use even with just the voice control.
It is also really sharp looking with the back design, it's just a really cool outer space looking graphic. It just adds to the appeal of the device. It also has a really fast WiFi connection and works anywhere in my house. It's perfect for a kitchen counter or other location where you need a small smart device but still have a screen. Overall, everyone in the family loves it and it gets a lot of use. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a small Echo device that also has a screen - at the end of the day, it really is the best of both worlds.

Kids love it, Parents questioning Utility

The kid's edition Echo Show 5 in the galaxy color looks pretty snazzy and colorful, perfect for a kids room or even in the living room but easily identifiable as a kids device. Unlike some other Amazon kids specific items, this is not ruggedized or wrapped with a protective case but still looks pretty solid. Looking straight on at the 5" screen, it really looks like a normal Echo Show. Setup is pretty straightforward to connect to your Amazon account and link kid's profiles. Then you're up and running.
With my children being preschool and elementary school age, they mostly used the Echo Show the same way they use a normal Echo speaker. There's a lot of song playing, asking questions like "what's the largest number" or "what's the fastest animal". For that, the response is about the same as they get, except with kid specific assistant voices. Music playback is pretty good, maybe even better than our existing Echo speakers and the Show has a feature that I found the kids making use of - the easy to see/touch/identify volume buttons. They're now more likely to just go manually raise or lower the volume versus interrupting mustic playback to ask the device to do it.
Where to place the Echo Show was a difficult decision. We felt in the kids bedroom might be good, due to the number of skills that are applicable like brushing teeth, reading/hearing stories, or potty training for example. The downside is having a screen or even just a speaker they can interact with makes actually progressing bedtime difficult or getting them out of the room for breakfast. So the call was made to locate in the family room. Even though we could set parental controls on timing that the device could be used, we preferred to avoid the distraction.
The Show 5 did a good job recognizing the kid's voices from across the room. Honestly, this was just as good as a normal speaker so no difference in performance. Some skills make use of the screen, but a lot pretty much just put up text which works for our older kid buf effectively makes little difference for the younger ones. Their biggest difference with the kid's edition of the Show 5 is album art for their favorite songs. One thing the kids noticed is the lag when starting a skill or switching skills. On the speaker, we're used to it "thinking". With a screen, the lag or lack of progress is much more noticeable.
There's a boatload of skills for Echo devices in general and even limiting oneself to "kids" skills, there's still a lot. Unlike with a normal Echo, discovery of some skills is easy going through the touchscreen. But often, my kids only really found a skill by accident. They'd ask for something related to a TV show they've watched or something they've heard about from other kids and there might be a similar enough skill that activates. Often, trying new things involves parents to look stuff up online or to remember some random skill the kids found that they liked so you could initiate it for them a day or two later from a very incomplete description of what they remember. While I had concerns about the screen size, the kids enjoyed Netflix once we enabled it on the Show 5. While they didn't have any complaints, having battery so that this can be portable or heck, even just stay powered up and operational while moving from one place to another would be useful. While acting as a screen enabled speaker worked ok for being centrally located in the living room, video playback would be better if we could move it to a more sound isolated room or area. Unfortunately, the Echo continues to not use something more standard like USB-C or micro USB which prevents taking advantage of the various chargers we have scattered throughout the house.
I think the Echo Show 5 can be a good kids device. Perhaps better geared towards a slighly older more independent set, maybe 1st or 2nd grade on to have users who'd use it in a way that goes beyond a normal Echo speaker. The Amazon kids feature is certainly useful though I wonder how much is truly worthwhile versus what I can configure on a normal speaker once the 1 year free trial is over. It certainly seems to fill a gap but at the same time, that gap seems relatively small. Given a choice between the Show and their kid's Fire tablets, they'll choose the tablets every time. So with the Show 5 not specifically being located somewhere their tablets won't go, it doesn't really act as a specific kid device but a generally available smart speaker that occasionally plays videos or has some cool animation to go along with a game skill.

Everything my 11-year-old ever wanted with Alexa

My 11-year-old son is a big fan of the Amazon - Echo Show 5 Kids (3rd generation). He's been friends with Alexa for a number of years now, so he was super excited to have a show as he's been using an Echo Dot for kids previously. He kept telling me it's everything he ever wanted from Alexa. Absolutely love it!
The setup was a breeze. I thought it would take much longer to set things up, however, it was super quick since I had previously set up accounts for both my kids. I was able to update the settings for both, so if this eventually lands with my 4-year-old, I can easily adjust the settings to reflect her Amazon Kids settings instead of my son. The Echo Show comes with a year subscription to Amazon Kids which is a great introduction to the benefits kids can experience from using Alexa. I was excited to see the year subscription came with the device.
My son has been using bigger kid settings for some time now, so we've been playing with the settings to see if it better meets his needs with Amazon Kids on/off. It's great that you can toggle between the two options to better personalize the device to the user. He loves having stories read to him and using some of the various Alexa skills like Mindfulness, Would You Rather, Music, etc. It's been exciting to explore options that include the show display. He was a little disappointed that he couldn't watch some of the things he wanted to on the Show but that was resolved when I toggled off the Amazon Kids setting for the Echo Show so he was happy to watch some of the other things he wanted to watch on it like YouTube.
The Galaxy design is super cool. He and I both had an immediate reaction that it looked really interesting. We loved the time display. The one thing that would be nice is if it returned to the time display more quickly. I checked the settings to see if there was a display setting I could change so it would return to the time/default screen sooner, but I haven't found one yet.
Overall, we are both big fans of the Echo Show 5 Kids. My kid loves it and I'm sure he will continue to get lots of use out of it. The only challenge is that I'm sure my 4-year-old will be wanting one soon.

Must have for kids!

My son has been obsessed with Alexa since he first learned how to speak sentences. Now that he is almost 5 he has learned how to interact much more with Alexa. The Echo Show 5 kids is even better because we are teaching him how to tell time. The cool part of about the Alexa is he can see the time, but he can also ask Alexa what time it is. This has helped a lot with him knowing what time he needs to get out of bed.
A 1-year membership to Amazon Kids+ is included and this allows him to interact even more with it. Some of his favorite things to do on it are listen to jokes, riddles, and music. A bonus for parents is that we can ensure that he is not listening to anything explicit. I remember prior to getting this Alexa he asked one of our other ones to play a song and it chose to play an explicit version of another random song.
The galaxy print on the speaker matches his galaxy themed black out curtains in his bedroom. Another great feature is that the kid can choose from several different kid’s characters to be the voice of Alexa. My son’s favorite is the dinosaur voice.
This Alexa is tailored for children and there are so many different things they are able to do with it. Along with anything a normal Alexa can do. I love being able to put restrictions on what my son is able to do since it is in his room. There is also a mute button and camera cover to ensure privacy when needed.

Do not buy this item from Best Buy. I ordered Jan 10 and still have not received it. It’s a shame they let you order products showing “in stock” when that is a lie.
