My 4 year old kid is having a blast using this device! We have always had Google home devices at home and wanted to try the Amazon Echo Show 5 Kids (3rd Gen) solely for my kid to use. Setting it up was a breeze, basically as easy as just following the onscreen instructions. I did not have the Alexa app on my iPhone to begin with, so I had to download the app in order to be able to connect the Echo Show with my iPhone and get more out of the device. It is where I set up the calling (synching with my contacts) and messaging. It is also easy to manage the music list and other settings through the Alexa app on the iPhone. Although technically you do not need to download the app because this device will work without synching it with an app. I installed the Alexa app so I can view the Echo Show camera through my iPhone. Once the device is connected to my home network, it can now 'talk' to my phone. Both the Alexa app and the Echo Show 5 are synched seamlessly. As far as the device's listening skills is concerned, I noticed that it can detect my voice better as compared to our Google home. I always find I have to repeat myself with Google, but Alexa knows right away that it's me. Also, since this device is geared for kids, you can select different voices such as panda, dragon, owl. The way that these voices talk I feel is very clear and appropriate for kids. My kid likes that when she asks Alexa about the weather, the answer uses animated background sounds as well as appropriate visuals on the screen. Now she asks Alexa about the weather every day! We are used to using Google home to play video of something, and since YouTube is the same company, it's easy to just instruct Google to play videos. For the Echo Show 5 Kids, a parent needs to set up Alexa to play music and videos from streaming devices. There are many more things this device can do such as setting up alarm for waking up, setting up reminders, listen to Audible books, etc. The device also includes a one year subscription to Amazon Kids+ so my kid can watch age appropriate videos, songs and games. She's currently watching her Peppa Pig videos as I am typing this review. Overall, this device is a good addition to our home network. Although my kid would have preferred the screen to be bigger since she's used to viewing from her iPad.

My Grandson is three years old and since I am retired he stays w/ me while my son and daughter in law work. And needless to say at the end of ten hours I am totally exhausted chasing a three year old around. So I had been looking at “things” to capture his attention and allow me time to do things that I need to do. When I knew I was going to receive this I began to wonder how he would be able to interact w/ this being three years of age. Granted, Alexa sometimes has a hard time understanding him as I do w/ the way he enunciates his words, but that being said it seems as if everyday it gets better. I just sit back and watch now that he has become familiar w/ what to say, what to touch and how to advance to the “next big thing” in his little mind. First of all, the color that Amazon has made these is appealing to him. The screen is just the right size for his age as well. We have the Echo 10 3rd Generation and he doesn’t understand why “his Alexa” doesn’t “walk” (turn) with him. He loves how HE can talk to her and she does what he wants her to do. He is in to dinosaurs and to watch him as he interacts w/ the device is amazing, and he has learned more about dinosaurs. It does say that there is an extra microphone designed to help w/ that. And it does in fact help. Just the other day he wanted to play a movie and it took a while for the device to completely understand what he was saying, but he finally got it to play. I love the fact that we can set time limits of how often and how long he can be on it. He loves to sing and I didn’t know there were so many kids songs out there just for kids. He has his favorites and it’s amazing how he and the Echo Show 5 kids “communicate”. I must admit, I didn’t think that it would be this easy for him to use and interact w/, and granted there has been a learning curve, but I am pleasantly surprised at how well this is designed for kids and how easy it is for them to use. The content is unlimited, he plays songs, watches movies, plays games, and the great thing is you can at the end of the day see everything that he has used. This is a great idea for kids, to be used by kids, and if you were on the fence about this as I was in the beginning, rest assured it is well worth it!

The Amazon Echo Kids Show is a smart device that comes with safety features built-in like parental controls, kids-friendly media content, and hardware buttons to disable the mic and camera. You also get 2 years of worry-free warranty along with a year subscription to Amazon Kids. Also for this year's version the audio has been improved and a new faster processor to help with last year's complaints of lag. There’s a lot of kids' content you get access to when you’re subscribed to Amazon Kids. There are plenty of TV shows and games to keep your kids entertained for hours. I do have some quirks about it and it has to do with navigation and performance. Navigation can be confusing at times and you end up with a frustrated child lol. From time to time it will slow down and sometimes need a reboot to fix it. Maybe an update can fix some of these issues. I definitely can recommend the Echo Kids Show it comes with parental controls that allow me to set limits so they don’t end up staying up past their bedtime, and that 2-year worry-free guarantee means my wallet gets a peace of mind too.

Great upgrade from a regular Echo Kids

I had an older Echo for Kids model that has gradually fallen out of favor with my twins, but I had already been researching a newer model when I was given a chance to review the new Echo Show 5 Kids edition. After a few days of use, I'm happy to say that the upgrades in the newest generation make a huge difference for my kids. Namely, the new processor and adaptive listening modes help the Echo Show 5 understand my kids better, who both can stutter a bit when trying to concentrate hard to get a phrase out that Alexa understands. There's been a notable improvement in the number of times they have to repeat themselves with the new Echo Show. This alone has made this worth the upgrade. The design of the unit with the galaxy print on the fabric looks really cool expecially for my science loving kids. The screen functions as an alarm clock or gives them some extra options for music controls or watching a video. Audio from the Echo Show 5 is actually really impressive. The sound quality is at least as good as a standalone bluetooth speaker in this price range would be, and with the Echo Show you get a lot more than just a speaker. Using the included Amazon Kids+ is great and easy to manage from the parent dashboard. I configured a standalone "Kid" account for use with the Echo Show so it could have a different time limit from their tablets and TV accounts. If you are like me and don't want your kids to be asking their Echo questions well past bedtime, I definitely recommend this!

Bottom Line: The Echo Show 5 Kids works well for kids who want more than a smart speaker but aren’t ready for a smartphone. Parent’s perspective: I got this as an upgrade to my 8-year old’s Echo Dot Kids, and so we were already pretty familiar with Amazon Kids+ content (1 year subscription is included). My child has always enjoyed the audio games (e.g., lemonade stand) and bedtime stories. The Show adds the ability to display song lyrics, play kids’ TV shows, and video call with the built in camera. All of these are nice upgrades to just a smart speaker. I also really like that we can access the camera from our phones, since we got rid of the baby monitor a few years ago. Parental controls let you set filters and time limits. Although I am not the primary user of the device, I found that while the touch screen works well, the device was a little sluggish, particularly starting / stopping video content. Kid’s perspective: My 8 year old loves the upgrade. She’s recently become more aware of time, and being able to see the time rather than ask for it has been helpful. She also likes that the device is stationary in her room, which means she has more ownership over the device rather than her tablet which we control when she’s able to access it.

The Amazon Echo Show Kids (3rd Gen) works seamlessly with the other Alexa devices in my home. Right out of the box, it was fast and easy to setup. Within a couple minutes, we were ready to go. It responds just like any other Echo device with the benefit of having a small 5.5 inch screen. Music plays great and the sound quality is really great for its size. It will also play videos and shows from Amazon Kids and is easy to use even with just the voice control. It is also really sharp looking with the back design, it's just a really cool outer space looking graphic. It just adds to the appeal of the device. It also has a really fast WiFi connection and works anywhere in my house. It's perfect for a kitchen counter or other location where you need a small smart device but still have a screen. Overall, everyone in the family loves it and it gets a lot of use. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a small Echo device that also has a screen - at the end of the day, it really is the best of both worlds.

Everything my 11-year-old ever wanted with Alexa

My 11-year-old son is a big fan of the Amazon - Echo Show 5 Kids (3rd generation). He's been friends with Alexa for a number of years now, so he was super excited to have a show as he's been using an Echo Dot for kids previously. He kept telling me it's everything he ever wanted from Alexa. Absolutely love it! The setup was a breeze. I thought it would take much longer to set things up, however, it was super quick since I had previously set up accounts for both my kids. I was able to update the settings for both, so if this eventually lands with my 4-year-old, I can easily adjust the settings to reflect her Amazon Kids settings instead of my son. The Echo Show comes with a year subscription to Amazon Kids which is a great introduction to the benefits kids can experience from using Alexa. I was excited to see the year subscription came with the device. My son has been using bigger kid settings for some time now, so we've been playing with the settings to see if it better meets his needs with Amazon Kids on/off. It's great that you can toggle between the two options to better personalize the device to the user. He loves having stories read to him and using some of the various Alexa skills like Mindfulness, Would You Rather, Music, etc. It's been exciting to explore options that include the show display. He was a little disappointed that he couldn't watch some of the things he wanted to on the Show but that was resolved when I toggled off the Amazon Kids setting for the Echo Show so he was happy to watch some of the other things he wanted to watch on it like YouTube. The Galaxy design is super cool. He and I both had an immediate reaction that it looked really interesting. We loved the time display. The one thing that would be nice is if it returned to the time display more quickly. I checked the settings to see if there was a display setting I could change so it would return to the time/default screen sooner, but I haven't found one yet. Overall, we are both big fans of the Echo Show 5 Kids. My kid loves it and I'm sure he will continue to get lots of use out of it. The only challenge is that I'm sure my 4-year-old will be wanting one soon.

My son has been obsessed with Alexa since he first learned how to speak sentences. Now that he is almost 5 he has learned how to interact much more with Alexa. The Echo Show 5 kids is even better because we are teaching him how to tell time. The cool part of about the Alexa is he can see the time, but he can also ask Alexa what time it is. This has helped a lot with him knowing what time he needs to get out of bed. A 1-year membership to Amazon Kids+ is included and this allows him to interact even more with it. Some of his favorite things to do on it are listen to jokes, riddles, and music. A bonus for parents is that we can ensure that he is not listening to anything explicit. I remember prior to getting this Alexa he asked one of our other ones to play a song and it chose to play an explicit version of another random song. The galaxy print on the speaker matches his galaxy themed black out curtains in his bedroom. Another great feature is that the kid can choose from several different kid’s characters to be the voice of Alexa. My son’s favorite is the dinosaur voice. This Alexa is tailored for children and there are so many different things they are able to do with it. Along with anything a normal Alexa can do. I love being able to put restrictions on what my son is able to do since it is in his room. There is also a mute button and camera cover to ensure privacy when needed.
