I read incessantly online but rarely paper books. I wondered if buying a Kindle would prod me to read more away from the glowing computer screen, and to read some actual book material for a change. So far, the answer is yes. This entry-level Kindle is inexpensive, a handy size, easy to read, and holds more books than I'll ever need. It works exactly as intended. The monochrome display is perfect for text and simple figures. I find the controls slightly awkward for following footnotes and looking up word definitions, but basic page-turning etc is faultless. A battery charge lasts a long time with wi-fi off (which should be the default setting but isn't... why leave wi-fi on when it's rarely needed?) Note that there's also a great deal of free (legal) content out there if you have any interest in old books — Darwin, Dickens, Twain, etc — and my public library *loans* contemporary e-books as well. In other words, feel free to buy the latest content from the Kindle Store if you wish, but it's hardly necessary to keep you swimming in quality reading material more or less forever. I can't believe I went so long without one of these little gems.

    Gift for Mom

Got this for my Mom and boy am I glad I did!!!! It was between a Kindle or a Nook. When I read the reviews the Nook got crumby reviews for Customer service so I decided to get a Kindle. BEST decision right there. My mom loves her Kindle the screen is glare free and the battery lasts a good while. She is ALWAYS reading which is her solace from work and is much needed. I got her a light that fits into the cover so that she could read in dim lighting as the glare free does not have a backlight.(M- edge "Executive" cover and "E Luminator" touch light)She is amazed at the HUGE selections of books, as she reads romance novels and is happy at the previews, freebies, and CHEAP prices of the books in comparison to the Nook. Now it took a little adjusting to get over the fact that it's not touch screen as most everything today is, but IT IS SO WORTH IT!!! Seriously that is the only thing. AWESOME PRODUCT AND SERVICE! W2G Amazon!

I had a Kindle Fire which got damaged - since I had been given an iPad as a gift I no longer needed many of the features that the Fire had which a plain Kindle did not... so I got this Kindle to replace the Fire so I could still have access to books I had obtained/purchased on my Fire account... the gray screen is not as easy to read but I also purchased a Kindle cover with a built in light... if this is your first Kindle, I would recommend the Paperwhite over the plain Kindle - the few extra dollars for the Paperwhite are, in my view, worth the extra money - my wife has had her Kindle for 6-7 years and it is still going strong so if the Paperwhite is $50 more your are talking $7-8/year... whichever reader you pick, they are wonderful - particularly for travel so you do not have to pack books in your luggage!!

I bought this as a back up, since my kids keep taking over my electronics. I know, you may say I shouldn't give up my electronics to my kids, but if you are looking at a Kindle, you understand the value of uninterrupted reading time. Anyway, back to the point, I bought this as a back up to my tablet, and have found myself reaching for this even when I could read from the tablet. It's basic, it's lightweight, and fits in one hand. Sometimes I get a little confused when the touch screen doesn't work... oh wait, it isn't touch screen, that's why I'm confused... but who needs that when all you want is to do is to read a good book? Plus, I don't have to freak out about the potential of losing it, since it is so inexpensive (in the grand scheme of electronics).

Overall for the price and features included you can't go wrong with this reader. The screen does not have a backlight so you cannot read it in the dark, but it excels in the outdoors. You can perfectly see the screen in the sun whether in a park, or on the beach. If you want to be able to read in the dark (in bed) you may want to consider the Kindle Paperwhite. As far as content, Amazon offers what seems like an endless amount of books. If you own more than one Kindle device it will also sync each device to the furthest page read on any one device. Definitely worth the price.

Bare Bones Great for Beach reading and more

I loved my old Kindle, and when it died, my daughter replaced it with an iPad, which is amazing. BUT...didn't want to take it to the beach or pool for reading, and I live in South Florida, so that is a big deal to me. This bare bones Kindle is perfect. It is cheap, and I even gave two as gifts. You can read it on a beach, and if you need light, book lights work. Since I am a former Kindle user, setup was easy, but a new user might not like the bare bones way to select a character, etc. But, once done, it is a thing of the past. I have other gadgets to do the bells and whistles. I just wanted a reader for the beach, and this is perfect.

The screen is "paper clear", and its as light as a plastic toy. I've had it for over a week and not needed to charge it yet (I haven't used it every day). My last kindle had a physical keyboard though, which can be helpful at times vs using that 90s style toggle at the bottom - noting that this one is 1/4the price of the one I bought in 2009. Also - other kindles allow for displaying % read and or page numbers. On this I only see % read... not sure if there is a way to change to "page number". Overall, can't complain given the pricing.

    Upgrade from nook 1st ed

I have a nook 1st ed that was staring to give me issues with software updates not going through. So I upgraded with this kindle. The navigation is different and takes time getting used to it especially coming from a different ereader. Overall it's smaller and lighter best part books are cheaper or free if you have prime. Barnes and noble has way overpriced ebooks and doesn't have all the newer book available like amazon. Got it when it was on sale for $20 less on here. Awesome deal don't regret it.

I like the screen on the Kindle and it is a really convenient size. It's easy to travel with and the battery life is good. However, I am having a hard time getting used to navigating between functions: search, book, dictionary, online. It's not touch screen and it doesn't have a keyboard, so it is time-consuming to enter search terms and a little confusing to go back and forth between functions. It still works and I'll use it. It's just a process to learn it. Not as user-friendly as other pieces of technology. And I suppose it's possible the problem is less with the item and more with the user. :)

I did not need a Kindle with all the bells and whistles (apps, color etc). I strictly wanted an E reader when traveling or on vacation or in bed. I have other devices for email and internet. This was a no frills, very affordable option and it exceeded expectations for the price I paid. Best Buy met the price Amazon had online so I paid under $50 for it. It is small, very light, has great battery life and is very easy for anyone to use. I have archived many books that I've already read and have 5 pages of new titles yet to read. Very happy with this purchase!

I have read books for years. I have procrastinated about buying a reader because it is hard to convert a 56 year old man. Needless to say, we all have to grow up sometime and keep up with technology. I finally broke down and purchased the Kindle and wish I had done it sooner. I still have doubts about the price of Kindle books I will read but as far as the reader is concerned I am a convert. No more taking books on vacations. No more having to carry a heavy bag with reading material. I am looking forward to vacations with a light bag on my shoulder.

great use for videos (netflix, etc)

Use my Kindle Fire frequently for video watching (Netflix mostly) and it works great for that. Using for reading an e-book not so great. I wish the Fire had side 'clickers" like the basic Kindle to change pages. Using a finger slide across screen sometimes does not work and after a hour or so reading the screen gunks up with skin oil. The batter time on the Fire is good, can usually get 3-3/12 hours of video watching in. On the flip side the charging time for this device could use a boost, is a bit slow in my opinion. I would definitely buy another one if the need every arose.

I love my kindle. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the newer versions but it does what you need. It's easy to read, even outside in the sun. Books download quickly and I can sort them into categories which I can't do on my android kindle. It's light weight and can be held in one hand and turn the page with the same hand. If you want to surf the web with this you'll be disappointed but if you want an easy way to carry around and read your own library this is a great buy.

Even though I have a Nexus 7 tablet with the Kindle app, I find it much easier to sit and read on this device more often. It's size is perfect for reading just before dozing off to sleep and not having to worry about the fact that I need to make sure to plug it in or I wouldn't have full portable use of the device the next day. It's also light weight so holding it while laying in bed isn't a problem. Having the backlight makes it even easier to read,, no matter where you find yourself. No more climbing out of bed to turn off the light at the end of your reading session.

This tablet might be considered prehistoric by some. The original eReader with very few whistles and bells. Great price, excellent battery life, lightweight. This is not a touch screen - you use nicely placed buttons instead. A bit old-school but no need to wipe down the screen after every use. The "special offers" that you can turn off for a small amount isn't bothersome in the least and all ads are for books which is the reason for using the device in the first place. There's no light on the screen like the paperwhite but it's half the cost and is just a great device.

This is simply a great device for reading in natural light. Feels good and looks good. Outside screen works fantastically. No glare. No problem. The menus and capabilities are limited to book reading. It is not a competitor for a tablet. It is better in many ways. You can access free book sources like Gutenberg.org and manybooks.net. Finding and downloading books from Amazon is amazingly easy. You can even borrow books from a library. It's best to initiate that from you cellphone or laptop and then view them with the Kindle. Easy to carry anywhere. I do love it.

I love reading on my kindle. I used to prefer a real book in my hands but now I prefer having an entire library in my pocket. The look of the kindle much more closely resembles a book than a tablet does. I considered a paperwhite kindle for the back lighting but opted for the cheaper one and I'm happy with it. Navigation is a little cumbersome but I usually buy or check out books using my computer and just sync the content so that's not really an issue. If all you want is a device that allows you to read books, this is it.

I really don't care for this new "basic version" of Kindle at all. It seems like they have really downgraded it (guess to sell more Kindle fires etc.) The screen is too small, and access to settings is more complicated than before. I also don't like having the key board on screen. Personal preference , but I really dislike it. For some reason, it also seems much harder to read than the other one. I would not recommend this at all. Wish I hadn't done it.

I love everything about the Kindle purchase. As I've mentioned I wish they would include the wall adapter to the charger so you wouldn't have to rely on charging your kindle to you computer/laptop. I've purchased this as a gift to my mother and she seems very pleased with her gift to date. Just need to get a cover somewhere else since your selection was slim to none. :( Best Buy needs to carry more updated styles of covers. There are not enough to choose from for a person to decide and compare with.

For a while, I have been reading e-books on iPad's Kindle App, and I always enjoyed reading books. I realized that I cannot use iPad outside, because of reflective screen, and also it is gets bit heavy to carry iPad longer periods of time. So, I got Kindle, and wow! I love it! Easier to carry for longer period of time and can read everywhere. The only two things that I regret, no backlight or touch screen.
