Sleek, more aesthetic version of a Surge/Battery Backup UPS that looks nicer in a home than the usual big bulky UPS's on the market. APC is a leader in the UPS market.

An excellent step up from a basic surge suppressor

THE GOOD
-Good Price ( see detail below )
-Backup battery power, obviously
-Wall mountable
-Outlets spaced to allow power bricks and wall-warts
-Four outlets for battery, two for non-battery
-Adjustable surge sensitivity
THE BAD
-Still a large brick to hang off a wall
-Can really only be wall mounted in one orientation
-Non-battery outlets aren't spaced
THE DETAILS
Those wondering why $50 is a good price for a surge suppressor probably only use the $5 fuse strips from Walmart. However those cheap strips' protection against electrical surges, ripples, and dirty power is quite minimal. They will likely shut off during big surges ( though some of the really cheap ones actually run the risk of fusing together and roasting every device plugged into the strip ), but they generally don't handle small power ripples and minor voltage fluctuations. For simple devices like room lamps, alarm clocks, and Christmas tree lights, that's not a problem. But for expensive, high-draw, sensitive electronics like TVs, computers, and consoles, it's insufficient protection. A quality surge suppressor is generally $30 - $40. So a small extra price for a battery backup is fair.
The unit itself is about the size of a toaster. It has six outlets across the top. Only the four on the left are connected to the battery, leaving the other two for heavier draw appliances that don't need a battery backup, like a soundbar and subwoofer or heavy appliance. All four battery outlets are nicely spaced for power bricks and DC power adapters, unfortunately the other two are not. Also up top is the power switch, which doubles as the control button for changing the suppressor's voltage delta sensitivity threshold ( the manual clearly explains how ). On the backside are two keyhole slots for mounting the unit to a wall. However, with the size and weight of the UPS, that may be tricky in many situations. It can only be mounted so the outlets are on top and face up ( or perhaps mounted on the underside of a desk ). A shorter and fatter power slab may have given enough size to house the battery while still maintaining convenient dimensions.
Though this is an uninterruptible power supply, the battery is far too small to be used for any length of time. It will run a TV, speaker bar, and game console for about 15 minutes, a modest desktop computer doing light work for 45 - 60 minutes, or a few low draw devices for a few hours. APC recommends this to for your modem and wireless router during outages ( my fiber modem and high performance router lasted almost two hours ). Such a use case would make it easier to get news and updates on the outage repair time estimates through your battery-powered devices, like phones, tablets, and laptops. You might even be able to stream a short movie on them.
The relatively small battery is neither a pro nor con, just how APC intended this particular UPS. It's not meant to keep a server running throughout an outage. It's only meant to give you you 10 - 30 minutes to respond to an outage, whether that's resetting a tripped breaker, turning on backup generators, or safely shutting down your computer or game console. You can get a larger capacity UPS, but they're much heavier and more expensive. Aside from the awkward size for wall mounting and the two non-spaced outlets, there's not anything to complain about for only $50.

Power and Surge Protection for Smart Devices

The APC 425VA is a household/small business style UPS. According to the box it's rated for 45min on a PC. Honestly, with a UPS you wouldn't want to run anything for the full 45min you're really looking for the ability to do a controlled disconnect, shutdown and protect your devices.
For my purposes, it's protecting the router, my Smart TV, AMP, PS4 and Google Home - 5 things. The APC 425VA can support up to 6 but in a 4 + 2 configuration. 4 for power+surge protection and 2 for surge. I decided to go for power+surge on my Router, TV, PS4 and Google Home and Surge on my AMP. If it helps you, my decision was made based on devices that could be bricked by a software update if the power went out and the need for connectivty on my router as I work from home and never want to be left high and dry on a VOIP call.
Things you need to know. The APC 425V ships with the battery disconnected (there's a little yellow plug you insert on the bottom to connect the battery). This seems to be a shipping requirement. This actually shows the only problem I found, which is the plug for whatever doesn't sit flush. Maybe it's so you know it's plugged in? But stops it from sitting flat on the floor. I am taking off 1/2 a star for this but given the way Best buy works that comes to a full star. You can mount the APC 425VA on a wall but not sure why you would.
But the important thing DOES IT WORK? YES! How do I know? Well the easiest way is to just pull the UPS power plug from the wall. In my tests, everything hummed along fine you wouldn't have noticed the power was out (it's a weird and funny feeling to pull out power while things are running - it goes against everything you want to do). The APC 425VA also doesn't make an alarm or beep when the power goes out which is awesome. Oh and if you're wondering why I am not using this on a PC, well I run a laptop - so you always have the battery there. :-)
Definitely recommended.

Impressed with the small size and light weight, plus the four (4) back-up outlets with two (2) surge protection.
It's been a couple of decades since buying a UPS when fewer plugs were offered, and the bulk and weight was like lifting a boulder.
One curious note, it off-gasses a low electrical chemical odor for the first couple weeks of use. Other than that I'm satisfied with this small, yet effective power regulating device.

Thank you for taking the time to review our UPS. You are correct that this unit doesn't have an user replaceable battery in the unit. The reasoning is that is usually more cost effective to replace the UPS which would come with a new battery in it. With a new UPS you would get a 3 year factory warranty on the unit as well. With just replacing the battery you would only get a 1 year warranty on the internal battery. If you are still interested in have an user replaceable battery please check out the BN650M1. It is the next size up and has an user replaceable battery.

I plug it in the wall and it immediately trips my circuit breaker. Tried it in multiple rooms and on GFCI outlets, still the same, trips the central breaker. Garbage, returning.

Thank you for taking the time to review our UPS. I am sorry to hear that you are running into issues with our unit. Unfortunately this issue is likely occurring because of the GFCI outlets and we recommend connecting it to a nonGFCI outlets. APC - Back-UPS 425VA Battery Back-Up System – Black
---HIGHLIGHTS---
Sophisticated Surge Protection, Battery Power, Widely Spaced Outlets
---DESIGN and PERFORMANCE---
This device was very easy to put in to service. All that is required is to plug it into an outlet and then plug your devices into it.
It has a total of six outlets. Four of which offer battery and surge protection. Two of the outlets are surge protection only.
I really like that the outlets are widely spaced out so they can accommodate bulky plugs that have the transformers built into them, without blocking any of the outlets.
I am using this unit with my wireless router and cable modem and find that it can power my Wi-Fi network for about 2.5 hours before running out of power. The operation is very stable. When the power is interrupted, the transition from electric to battery power is instantaneous.
It should be able to power most smaller devices for hours during a power outage.
It can be used with larger electronics, but the battery will only power them for a few minutes.
There is a low battery alarm that can be silenced and controlled by a button on the device.
---BOTTOM LINE---
This device combines surge protection and battery power in one useful and affordable package. It is perfect for powering a Wi-Fi network during a power outage.

Thank you for taking the time to review our BE425M unit. We appreciate the feedback. Please make sure that the loads connected to the UPS does not exceed its capacity. This unit has a total capacity of 255 watts, which could provide around 2minutes of runtime during power outage. If ever the connected loads on your UPS is less than the total capacity, please reach us out via phone (800-800-4272) or chat (https://www.apc.com/us/en/tools/chat/) to further diagnose your unit.

The APC 425 battery backup is a basic device that can be used for relatively low powered devices for short periods of time. The design is small enough that is can tuck neatly into the back of desk or similar. The 6 outlets are all surge protected and the 4 battery backup outlets are nicely spaced for transformer power supplies. The two remaining are surge suppression only and only have enough space for two standard plugs or 1 large power supply plug.
Testing :
I run a Verizon supplied modem with a secondary Nighthawk router. Because of this set up , it does draw more power than a standard one router setup. I unplugged the APC back up from the wall and left it. It lasted almost exactly 1 hour. You do get audible warnings as it is about to run out of power. There was no drop of internet so there is no discernible latency between loss of power and battery backup engagement. Not bad and about what I expected.
What I like :
What differs from some of the UPS’s from the past is the slim horizontal form factor. I own multiple versions of this and they nicely under and behind furniture. It even has two key holes on the back if you want to mount it to a desk or wall. You do have to be careful about venting, but it is very usable.
What I do not like:
Joules..ugh. It is only rated 180 joules. Many do not really know what a joule rating is and why it is important. A joule rating indicates how much energy the surge protector can absorb before it fails. A joule is a watts per second. Therefore, this device is rated to handle the equivalent of three 60 watt light bulbs. APC dedicated surge suppressors handle 2880 joules or more. Sounds terrible, right? Well not completely but it is not good. Take a look at APC $40 surge suppressors, they will have $250,000 equipment guarantees and the APC 425 has “only” $75,000. Therefore, APC is readily acknowledging the difference in surge protection. However, a UPS’s primary function is to be a backup and a surge suppression is an added benefit. The competition offers far higher joule ratings on similar products ( in most cases 3 to 4 times the amount) but there may be differences in testing standards. I run battery backups off of surge suppressors and have no issues. It should be noted that APC states you use a APC surge suppressor or it could void the “Equipment Protection Policy.” Here is an excerpt from APC
“Plugging any non-APC surge protector, power strip, or extension cord into the output of an APC brand UPS could void your Equipment Protection Policy (EPP). However, the standard 3 year product warranty is maintained. If, after taking into consideration this knowledge base document, you choose to use an APC brand surge protector in conjunction with your APC brand UPS, your warranty and Equipment Protection Policy will be maintained.”
It's a load of bull, if you use a high quality surge suppressor; there will be no issues. APC just wants you to buy their products. It is APC prerogative so beware and I am not suggesting to do anything that would void your warranty.
Conclusion :
Like all of APC products, they do what they are supposed to and well built. I own 5 APC battery backups and they are all great. I used them to back up my routers, video cams and select LED lights . But you need to know what you are buying and what is the purpose. They are not great surge suppressors and you need to have that to protect your equipment. You should never plug a surge suppressor into a battery backup, but you can do the reverse as long as you are paying attention to the load. In other words, just because you now have 18 outlets with the surge suppressor and the battery backup combined, it does not mean to load it up. The APC UPS 425VA Battery Back-Up System BE425M is a solid, affordable piece of equipment that will maintain power to your network or any other lower power device. Now you may ask why I say “lower power” device. This is the smallest of the battery backups available from APC, they go all the way up to 900VA’s in a similar form factor. If you want more run time , look to their bigger models . If you are looking to back up a network router, this should give you more than enough time to finish a project or just prepare for a shutdown because of a power outage.
