She uses her iMac to edit photos and saves them to a networked hard drive over a gigabit ethernet network. One of the reasons I purchased this is to have the ethernet protection. After plugging it in I tried using the network drive and found it to be much slower and found that it only supported up to a 100mbps connection (not listed on any documentation for the UPS). 100mbps is fine for most people but when you are dealing with any sort of scenario where you are accessing content over your network (iTunes server, networked storage, etc.) 100mbps will bottleneck you because your replput will be closer to 50mbps due to the line not being fully duplexed (having the ability to talk at 100mbps both ways). I will keep it but I will have to get another solution for my ethernet line conditioning.

APC Back-UPS 600VA

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.UPS---Uninterruptable Power Supply---you would think when the power is restored (after a surge, power outage, etc) the unit would pass the good power to your devices---NOT! It passes the good power to the power surge plugs, but not to the Battery Backup plugs---you must be there the press the button manually. If you don't, it will just run its battery down (even if good power is available) until it runs out and shuts down your stuff. Upon numerous chat conversations with APC, you must buy the 'BR' Pro series if you want it to come back on. So, unless you are by your protected devices 24 hours a day to manually press the power button when power is restored, this unit is not for you or me. Too bad this isn't in their Specs---it would have saved me much time!

If you have a computer connected to this unit, you can use our Powerchute Personal Edition software to safely shutdown and restart the computer. Please refer to this section in the user manual:
Use PowerChute Personal Edition software to configure the UPS settings.
Protect your computer and other equipment during a power outage. During a power
outage, PowerChute will save any open files on your computer and safely shut it
down. When power is restored, it will restart the computer.

Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thought the point of an UPS was to give me time to shut off my devices in event of an outage. i use this for my aquarium's Apex controller and it still cut off before the UPS kicked in. this did not work for that purpose. i wouldn't use this on an aquarium.

APC's Back-UPS and Smart-UPS SC product lines are designed for use with computer type loads only. They are not designed to be used with motor loads such as fish filters, air conditioning units, space heaters, vacuum cleaners or any other machinery. We would typically recommend a Smart-UPS for these types of applications.
