PROS: * Surge protection (1080 Joules) * 6 outlets * Three USB ports for charging portal devices (2 USB-A and 1 USB-C) * Allows easy access to power outlets at your desk CONS: * Glossy casing LOVES fingerprints/smudges -- SETUP -- Setting up the APC SurgeArrest Essential is quick and easy. APC has four suggested installation/locations for the SurgeArrest: (1) Standalone (sitting upright), (2) clipped to your desk, (3) hung over an office partition, and (4) under a monitor (how I’m using mine). How you place your SurgeArrest will really depend on what type of desk you’re using (or if you’re using a cubicle). The power cable for the SurgeArrest is about 6 feet long and has a right angle connector, so it won't stick out from the power outlet (something I really appreciate since my desk is up against my only outlet in my office). -- USAGE -- My primary computer is my laptop, so it’s nice to no longer need to crawl under my desk each time I need to charge my laptop at home. The SurgeArrest also has three USB ports, making charging my phone, earbuds, and tablet SO much easier. This is easily the best designed surge protector for office use. I'm using my SurgeArrest under my monitor, since I really only need a couple of the outlets for my laptop and monitor. Depending on your desk, I would recommend using the clipped option so you can access all six outlets. -- BOTTOM LINE -- Honestly, my only complaint about the SurgeArrest is that the casing is a glossy plastic, so it collects fingerprints and smudges like it’s its job. Other than that, the SurgeArrest is a FANTASTIC office addition. You’re getting a surge protector that is designed to take up as little space as possible and easy to access.

I love this surge protector. I use it at my desk to plug in all my devices and it fits on my desk perfectly. I can latch it on my desk or I can have it standing at the back of my desk. I prefer it standing and I rerouted all the wires so they are all behind my desk including my television that is mounted to the wall can plug straight into it instead of trying to get it to reach the floor like the other surge protectors. I love how little it is and it does not take up much space on my desk. I love that it comes with 2 usb-A and 1 usb-c port especially because a lot of devices are switching over to the usb-c now. I don't know what else to say or to dislike about this. It works out perfectly for my desk area at home. and 6 plugs for a surge that is so compact, is perfect.

With the APC - SurgeArrest Essential 6-Outlet/3-USB Surge Protector Strip -you are able to mount it on your desk, computer monitor, and or let it rest on the floor. I tested the surge protector at my home and work. It was very convenient to use at work when attaching to my cubicle. I was able to plug in my speakers, computer, shredding machine, along with charging devices. I was not only able to charge my cell phone, but also my Bluetooth, and battery pack all at once. The devices charged pretty quickly. I like that the protector is small and portable. Lately, it has been raining in California. With that said the surge protector did its job when experiencing thunder. So far have no complaints. I would recommend this to a friend and even family members. The price point is not bad at all.

    Unique, cool design

This is kind of a cool power "strip" surge protector and USB charger. The "C" shape with a spring clip inside lets you clip it to the edge of a desk, top of a cubicle divider, or some other similar feature. You can also just sit it flat on the table or put it under a monitor. If you have a power strip under your desk and you have to crawl under it to plug/unplug things, then this might be a great solution for you. With this device, you can clip it to the edge of the desk, run the power cable back to the outlet, then easily access the 6 AC outlets on the sides under the desk and the 3 USB ports on the top. If you sit it flat on the desk or table, you can also easily access all the ports. If you put it on it's side under a monitor, though, it looks like you'll be losing the 3 AC outlets on the bottom surface. I'm also not sure how well it would work on a cubicle divider, either. I guess it would depend on your particular setup, but it seems like you'd have the power cord plugged in on your side of the cubicle and so you'd have access to the AC outlets. The other side of the strip with the USB outlets would then be hanging on the outside of the cubicle so I'm not sure how useful that would be. Maybe your neighbor will be happy to use it. It does have two USB type-A ports and a single USB type-C port. However, the max power is listed as 4.8A at 5V both with a sticker on the strip and in the spec sheet that comes with it. It's not clear to me what this means for the type-C port because that standard can run at higher voltages like 9, 15, or 20V. From some quick charging tests, I'm guessing the type-C port only puts out 5V on this one. So, this will be fine for charging your phones and other smaller devices, but not enough to charge something like a laptop. I have a 47W type-C charger for my HP laptop, but for comparison this one only provides 24W (4.8Ax5V). Anyway, I love the cleverly shaped design and am very happy with it so far. If you know the details ahead of time and set your expectations accordingly, then you should be pleased with it, too.

    Unbelievably practical!

This surge protector power strip has been very helpful in my office. I always have a pile camera batteries that are in need of charging or other devices like my tablet, but it's sometimes tough because so many other devices are plugged in and it is not ideal to unplug them such as the power cord to my desktop computer and monitors, printers, etc. On top of it not being ideal to unplug the bigger devices, if I want to plug a camera charger in instead, I'm crawling under my desk to get to the outlets. I had been thinking about finding a way to have a power strip somewhat accessible but this device solved so many problems in one fell swoop. It is so practical! I love that it has outlets on both sides so chargers do not start piling up on it and covering other outlets up. I also love that it has the USB and micro USB C ports right on it, freeing me from having to plug in phone, tablet, etc chargers into the valuable real estate of the normal outlets. The opening to fit around a desk is bigger than I expected, I have a desk that is an inch and a quarter thick and it still sits loosely, loosely enough that the power strips moves around when trying to plug something into it. I would have liked it to be a little more sturdy in its grip on a table but I understand they made it such a wide opening to be able to fix many different desks, tabletops and other applications. Overall though I cannot say enough good things about the convenience of this power strip. It's nice to have something so useful and flexible and have it be at a reachable location but not in the way. It is such a good design and I recommend it to anyone who finds themselves regularly switching out different chargers and devices in their outlets to meet all their needs.

This space-saving U-shaped unit has six surge protected power outlets as well as one USB-C port and two USB-A ports. The USB ports offer smart charging. The multi-use unit if very flexible. It can be used as a stand alone unit, clipped onto a desk, hung over an office partition or placed under a computer monitor. I chose to use it as a standalone unit, but the flexibility is nice to have in case I decide to utilize it in a different position later. There’s a rocker switch to turn the unit off and on. It has an LED which, when lit, indicates that the unit is providing surge protection. And, it comes with a warranty that’s good for the lifetime of the original owner. Now that’s what I call having confidence in the quality and durability of their product! All in all, this is a solidly built unit that inspires confidence in it’s durability. Coupled with the flexibility and lifetime warranty, this is definitely a winner. Highly recommended.

    Handy, Flexible Surge Protector

APC was kind enough to send me this surge protector to try out and I must admit I like it a lot, even though I have yet to fully utilize all of its features. I have a complex sim racing set up with triple monitors, wheel, amplifier, gaming PC, etc. and I am very nervous about power surges. This surge protector easily handles that but it also has a lot of other features that make it quite flexible, including its unique latching system that gives us a host of mounting options for our particular set ups. I also use the USB ports to power some of the parts of my set up. It is future proofed, to some extent, due to its inclusion of the USB-C ports. So, in a nutshell, this surge protector does what it purports to do and then some. Buy with confidence!

I really like the form factor of this surge protector. Being able to clip it over the top of my workstation divider enables me to put it in a handy position. The availability of USB and regular plugs makes it even more useful. I have not had a surge to report on its effectiveness in regard to that however APC is leading brand and I've used many of their other products and I have every reason to believe that the equipment that I plug into this will be well protected.

    Organized power!

From where I live, there are no issues with lightnings, or power surges. I probably will not be able to use the real protection this one offers—but like any insurance, this probably will protect me when that happens. Given that, I cannot say anything about any protection—I am just happy I have peace-of-mind when it might. What I like about this one though, is not the peace-of-mind, because any surge protector can do it. What is great about this product is actually its shape, because guess what, it actually helps organize my wires. To be honest, of course I had to reorganize my wires to get this set up. But the way it wraps around a side of my table and puts it all in there means better access to my plugs. I myself have a good turnover of devices—I usually buy new devices when they come out. So this means, having to change what gets plugged in every so often. This power strip helps me reach my plugs easier—no more unnecessary crawls under the table. Also, USB sockets are on top, at least from my set up. This makes it easier for me to change cables to charge our devices with different tips (talk about micro USB, USB C and lighting cables in the family). Plus the power the USB throws out is as good, if not better than the adapters they come with especially that our tablets and power hungry phones need more than usual power. But hey, my wireless charger actually charges fast plugged in to this device. Lastly, it is easy to turn all my plugged devices on and off. The power button is actually deep in the surface so no one accidentally powers it off if they put anything on the work desk. Soooo, useful, this power strip. It is a great device—I am just surprised no one thought of this much sooner.

As a power strip, this works okay. All the outlets worked and the charging times were quite fast, much faster than the charging port I was using at my desk. The outlets are too close together and all go the same way so if your plug goes in another direction, you have a problem. Another problem came in as to where to put it. It fit on the side of my desk nicely except then I discovered I would have difficulty plugging things in as the outlets were now right under the desktop and I'm too short to easily reach them, Even when I put it where I could easily reach the outlets, it was still awkward. Okay, I thought, I'll just put it on the desk. Nope, the power cord from it is heavy and just tipped it over and when I tried putting it the other way round, the cords I plugged in pulled it over. Putting it around my monitor meant I lost the use of 3 outlets. The easiest solution for me was to just use it for those items I don't unplug and that is working nicely. It has freed up space on my desk which I love and I do so love the USB charging ports which are quite easy to get to. This is an item where location, location, location is something to be considered.

    Unique and Useful Design

This surge protector is kind of a unique design which is really useful. A lot of surge protectors have built in USB charging ports. However, you either end up foraging under your desk to plug in cables, or stepping on the always plugged in cables. The APC "C" shape and clip lets it slide onto the edge of the desk or top of the cubicle partition, so it's easily accessible. I ended up using one on my computer table and one on the back edge of the TV stand. The plugs are much more accessible, the power cables are more manageable, and the USB power ports are readily available. Speaking of which, the three ports (two USB and one USBc) share 4.8Amps, not 2.4, which makes charging two high current devices possible. The power cable to the surge protector swivels at the unit so the unit can be used stand up or clipped. The wall plug is a flat 90 degree type, so the power cable doesn't protrude from the wall socket. All in all, APC came up with a very clever design to try to tame the under desk power cord mess.

Nice Try APC. But This Falls Short

I will readily admit that I was a little more excited about this glorified power strip than I should have been. And maybe because of that reason, my expectations were higher than they should have been. I have purchased multiple APC devices throughout my life. They are the gold standard when it comes to battery backup and power protection. This device is an unconventional concept that attempts to provide accessible power sources to a typical office environment by way of its shape and ability to dangle from the edge of a desk or ledge. Unfortunately, it falls short of the high standards of APC. Notice I said “dangle”. That’s because there is no way to tighten this item securely to the edge. It has a spring loaded clamp that is supposed to provide some stability, but it’s not enough. A tightening thumb screw would have done the trick. I would also recommend it to be expandable so that larger ledges or objects that the user may want to attach it to would be possible. It’s bulky as well. Having it on the edge of my desk tucked away in the corner seemed to be the best place for it. Still, it stuck out like a sore thumb and if I tucked it away in the corner, three of the wall outlets would be blocked. Power supply was another issue. This device has two standard USB ports and one USB-C port. For the life of me, I could not get my Bluetooth headphones to charge on this device’s two USB ports. I checked the cable and the headphones themselves. It was only this device causing the issue. And with this being my main reason for wanting the device, it was unfortunate that it wasn’t compatible. Finally, the extension cord needs to be longer. I have a standard sized cubicle desk and the power cable was not long enough to comfortably route underneath the desk. Rather it was stretched out, causing an eye sore and just being outright annoying. So I give APC points for style and creativity, but in form and function this device is lacking. There are much better options that are relatively cheaper and more practical. I would not recommend this to a friend at this time.

Thank you for taking the time to review our UPS. I am sorry to hear that it didn't meet your expectations. In regards to the unit being loose on your desk you would want to make sure the desk is between 0.98in to 2.44in to fit correctly on the desk.
