EPIC FAIL!! 10 reasons why Apple TV 4 is terrible

    Posted
    InspiredReader

After waiting 4 years for the new Apple TV, this thing is A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT! Here's why: 1. THE REMOTE IS JUST AWFUL. Whoever invented this touchpad remote must have never tested it in the dark. The slightest brush of fingers across the edges causes the tv screen to display the bottom scrubber bar. Touch it again and the play head whizzes ahead or back 4-5 minutes...even at the least sensitive setting. And why didn't Apple put LEDs behind the buttons? In a dark room, you need a flashlight to tell one slick black button from the other slick black button! My roku remote has motion activated illumination, making it easy to use in the dark. 2. SET UP IS A CHORE. You can't set up the Apple TV without swiping through the on-screen keyboard using the remote trackpad. God bless you if your Apple ID and passwords are long or a mix of upper/lowercase/numbers/symbols. Swiping and pressing (yes you must hard-press the trackpad, not tap as you would have naturally thought) causes extreme frustration because the device only intermittently recognizes the gesture correctly. Sometimes a swipe moves the cursor over 1 character, sometimes a swipe moves the cursor over 3-4. Tap too hard and you'll select the wrong character. Grrr. Still no way to pair a Bluetooth keyboard like with previous models. 3. VOLUME IS TOO LOW. The default volume setting for all of my devices is the same (Bluray, Roku, DVR), except the Apple TV, which outputs much lower volume. So when I switch inputs to my DVR (or other device) the volume is blaring. 4. INTERFACE NEEDS REDESIGNING. The giant sliding interface is nauseating to watch. On a big tv the interface seems to LUNGE up and down as you navigate though the onscreen icons. They're ENORMOUS! Most people who would drop $150 for AppleTV instead of a much cheaper roku or Amazon Fire probably have a 40+ inch flat screen...we don't need icons that are 24 inches across. Smaller icons and channel buttons would look a hundred times better. 5. NOT MUCH OF AN UPGRADE. Aside from Plex and 1080p it's almost the same experience as my older Apple TV, which is free since its been paid off for 5 years. The remote and interface got worse, not better. 6. SIRI SEARCH IS LIMITED. Siri search mostly returns a popup that says "I can't do that". Like when you ask it to search youtube for "hamster eating carrot" or "the trailer for Trumbo". No, my friend, I have to swipe my way through the trackpad to search. Or...I could pull up the youtube app on my iPhone and use AirPlay to stream it. But I could have done that with my old Apple TV. 7. SIRI DEFAULTS TO ITUNES STORE. Siri WILL HOWEVER return accurate responses to anything you can BUY or RENT on the ITunes Store. Saying 'play Breaking Bad' takes me to the iTunes Store, not the version I have. Hmmm. I get the feeling Apple wants me to buy the itunes version rather than stream a version I already bought. 8. AMAZON VIDEO IS MISSING. I heard rumor that Amazon would have an app for streaming content. Not yet. I still have to keep my roku for that. So my dream to have all streaming services on 1 device will have to continue on. So...it's just like where I was a week ago, before I bought the new Apple TV. 9. GAMING IS FRUSTRATING. You use that awful remote to play games. It is very unnatural playing a game using the trackpad. It feels ergonomically wrong. I could buy a pricy controller for a more traditional gaming experience, but Apple insists that all games must be playable with the Siri remote. It's like holding a Magic Mouse in the air and then swiping across the surface with your thumb to play Crossy Road or Badlands. Try it...you'll see what I mean. 10. STILL A HOBBY DEVICE. I'm returning this tomorrow, though I must express my disappointment in how poorly Apple "changed how we experience tv". For 4 years the rumors have been circulating about this update, but Apple TV 4 seems to have been rushed out the door last minute. What a COLOSSAL DISAPPOINTMENT. I expected so much better from Apple.

Not a Premium Product for Streaming Devices

Unfortunately, as an avid Apple fan, having bought almost all of their product line throughout the years, this is by far their worst product they have unleashed to consumers. If you are into fancy looking 3D app displays that dazzle you while you load them, then this is your product. If you are interested in high quality video with a lot of content, choices, a USB port for personal media playback, and a crisper picture quality, I strongly suggest - DO NOT buy this product. I have an Apple TV 3 and bought this as an upgrade without reading any reviews. I guess that is my fault, but this by far is not worth the extra money or time to set up. First thing of annoyance - when you start it, you have to waste a ton of time, re-downloading your favorite apps, doing so in an app store that barely has anything. The picture quality is not better than the 3 - just want people to know, if you have had the Apple 3, it plays exactly as the Apple 3 does in the quality of the video, nothing better. If you read the box, this is NOT any up-scaler towards an UHD - 4K experience, it is still ONLY 1080P, if that is what they want to call it, I definitely do not, it is more like a 720 P quality video. There is no USB hub to Plug n Play your personal media unlike others (Of course Apple doesn't offer that with any of their stand alone products). If I can do so, I will bring this back for a refund. I still have the Apple 3 and if they both have the same quality streaming video, then in my opinion, I am just throwing money away at Apple for a fancy looking device that basically is the same as the 3,, but with an app store that doesn't offer much. Another point I want to make sure consumers are aware of this product, the so called "new" apps in the app store do not play like the Apple 3 apps did. In example, if you had the HBO GO app on the Apple 3, all of you fans of HBO would know that the auto-play feature was excellent on the Apple 3, playing continuous content when allowed. The Apple 4 doesn't offer this yet. I have called Apple, and they can only say, because this is a new OS for the Apple TV, it is the developers of the apps who have yet to enhance the apps that can play on the Apple TV 4, so expect a downgrade instead of an upgrade on the apps. All in all, this is not worth money nor time. Apple unleashed this piece of hardware prematurely. They should have waited until the apps were worth it for the consumers. Content - Horrible. You are tethered to iTunes only as far as buying a movie or show. Plus it never recognized my Apple ID.

    Not a Apple basher

    Posted

First off, unlike many that post these negative reviews I am not a Apple basher. I currently have the following products that I heartily recommend. MacBook Pro (2012), iMac 21" 2.5gh i5, iPhone 6, previous generation apple tv, iPad mini (second generation), iPod touch (and numerous other devices that I no longer use). All have worked perfectly from day one and continue to do so. This latest generation Apple TV worked well when I brought it home (purchased it at Sams Club for 119.00). After updating the system software to the current version it has been nothing but trouble. It is constantly unable to connect, requires several attempts just to play movies I've already purchased and has been a huge disappointment. The remote works well though it took allot of getting used to. It seemed much faster then the earlier version, but seems much less useful. I use my Apple TV to compliment my cable tv, not to replace it. The current Apple TV seems to want to bypass your cable provider (instead of working with it as the older one did) and it appears they are more concerned with selling subscriptions (like Amazon) then providing a top notch product. Gone are apps like HBO Go (that you can use with your cable subscription, now it seem you have to subscribe though Apple). Whether they come back is yet to be seen, but as the current Apple TV is I would not recommend it to anyone. I would like to give it more then one star but honestly cannot recommend it, my old Apple TV is much better for my needs and I wish I had spent have as much for a better product.

I've had this thing for over a year and a half now and I have to say, this is the worst product apple has ever released. CONSTANT network errors, and disconnects. You have to sign into every freaking thing but the remote only understands letters half the time, plus you have to say your password to your whole apple account in front of everyone or type it with the ridiculous remote. I've tried and tried to get the phone remote app to work but every single time I need it to work it can't find the tv. Did I mention the ridiculous remote? Of course you always pick it up the wrong way because it's symmetrical front and back. But then you set it down and the stupid touch interface is constantly getting tripped. Dog steps on it? Show paused. Slides between sofa cushions? The menu freaks out. It will take you another minute to get back where you were. I hate this thing. What finally prompted me to write the review is that I Be been sitting here trying to get Hulu to work for over a half hour and got bored with "network error" screens. I went to test Internet on my iPad and see if it was the connection or just appleTV sucking again. Well here I am writing this review on a fully functional wifi connection. I was going to sell my old Apple TV 1. I think I'll keep it and trash this piece of garbage. Don't waste your money.

    I Received a German Model

I purchased this device because my wife wanted to watch her IPad videos of our granddaughter on our 60" Plasma TV. I was able to do this with my Blackberry, but her IPad would not communicate via DLNA. So I bought this unit after the Best Buy Staff highly recommended it. As you know, most Apple Products come with very little documentation, as is the case with this device. I had to find an HDMI Cable, which is not included at $147.00! I plugged it into the power source and it took over the TV. If flashed too many screens to count and when it stopped, the screen was asking me to choose something in German! I could not read it. Since there are no instructions, I disconnected power and tried again. Same results. I called Apple Support. On hold for 45 minutes. During this time I went to the Apple Website where they had posted screenshots of the set up process. I was able to determine it wanted me to choose Manual Setup or Automatic Set Up with an IPad. I chose the IPad automatic setup which failed three times. I never got connected to Apple Support. I returned the product. I guess my wife will have to watch our Grandchildren from my Blackberry.

As someone upgrading from a second generation Apple TV, I was not expecting said upgrade to be so unpleasant. At the time of the upgrade, I was technically looking for a gift for my mother, who I had given my 2nd gen Apple TV to a few years ago. While her hatred of the touch pad on the remote is a matter of opinion, some other features are more plainly negative. For example, while in the Netflix app, searching for Orange Is The New Black brought us into the iTunes Store so we could purchase the show. A ridiculous action, compounded in absurdity since we could freely watch OITNB with our already paid for subscription to Netflix. Thankfully, Best Buy's 15-day window allowed us to exchange this disappointment for the Roku Premiere, which I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking for a great streaming media player. For those of you used to streaming from iTunes to your Apple TV, check out the free version of Plex to pair with your Roku.

Bought for a close friend for Christma, a guy who has everything Apple including a perfectly good gen 3 Apple TV. The remote skips through way ahead or way back just like another reviewer said, the screensaver won't slide though photos no matter what library is picked. It keeps rotating the same photo over and over even though there are many photos in each library.. It automatically powers off his projection screen TV so he has to turn it back on. He's extremely Apple products savvy...so I am taking this back to Best Buy this week. He wants no part of it and is happy enough with his gen 3. What a big disappointment!! As for me as the "giftee"...I paid my cc off leaving a zero balance and Best Buy only refunds the card used so now I'll have a credit of $161.00 on my Visa when I don't want want that bank having my money until I use my card for new purchases! I want it back as a cash refund so I can put back in the checking account I used to pay the credit card off! Disappointing for me as well!!

This is my first ever review! I was so excited, I waited for the roll out, pre ordered it and was so excited to get it home. Very easy to set up, but once I started going thru the apps ( very few of them) I started to notice that this is not ready for the consumer! Apple! What the heck is this!I was expecting great things, I love my 6Splus, I love my iPads, I have always believed that Apple is the best of the best and will always have an iPhone and iPad but this is disappointing, it remind me of my first Wii I purchased10 years ago having to scroll to input each letter just like the controller for the wii! You can buy a strap for it just like the wii. I am definitely taking this back to Bestbuy and getting the Roku4 , from what I have read, it is light years ahead of ATV including 4K I really wanted this to work but it looks like Apple needed a cash boost for the holidays! Maybe next version will be better.

I have had previous versions of Apple TV and this one is not that much better. VERY disappointed actually. While it does allow you to connect to your home iTunes library, the UI and search options remind me of the way computers used to look like 20 years ago! I mean really Apple?? AND if you use Siri to do anything, IT DOES NOT INCLUDE YOUR HOME DEVICE. For instance, if I ask Siri "Please show me Tom Cruise movies", it will only show films from the iTunes store....not anything from my home library. This was kind of the main reason I bought it, to have control over my home library. Even if you ask Siri to do something specific to your library such as "Show me playlist "late night favorites".." it will reply with "I'm unable to do that". Pretty much for everything I wanted it to do...that is the reply. Sucks really.

This AppleTV whilst containing the fantastic content of the previous model drastically over complicates the menu system. Making the most simple task of repeat viewing or out of sequence viewing the worest technological over complication since EVER SINGLE VERSION IF ITUNES SINCE "iTunes 7". Adding voice commands to search is a nice feature, but calling it SIRI is a slap in the face. As it doesn't perform any of the functions of Siri does in any other devices. The new remote is also a huge pain in the a** as it's just as incovinetly small as previous remotes but now is ultra sensitive to contact, be prepared to find your spot or un-pause what your doing after accidentally touching the remote. Stop beautifying and over complicating your interfaces, functional and effiecent always trumps fancy and complicated in my book.

USB-C Cable Required For Restoration, Not Included

After 2.5 months of ownership, it spontaneously required restoration on starting up this morning. Restoration requires a USB-C cable that isn't included with the Apple TV ($25 for the cheapest available in Best Buy) and isn't used by any other devices aside from the small Macbook (which I don't own). Apple Support's two options were to drive 45 minutes one three days from now, or to buy a cable and have it shipped to me. I don't consider either option acceptable for a device this new, so I'll be trashing it and purchasing a Roku 4 or FireTV shortly. I don't fault Best Buy, this occurred well after their return period lapsed, the support issue is entirely at the feet of Apple.

I'd steer clear of this unit. There are much better options that cost only 1/3 of this price. First off, the choices available for entertainment are VERY limited to only Apple approved apps. These are VERY limited in number compared to any of the non-Apple choices you have available from the competition. The connection drops all the time from this unit. I'd go with another product that is non-Apple as you get WAY better connection options, that are more stable and don't drop, plus they are a LOT cheaper! 1/3 the cost! I returned mine for a full refund and am much happier with the other choice. You will be too.

I was absolutely in love with my Apple TV for 1 day, then the honeymoon was over. Set up was easy, mirrored my iPad Pro flawlessly, streamed YouTube,Netflix etc. without a single hiccup. Enter day 2: The remote was dead, no click, no light from the box indicating input received, funny thing though, the volume still controlled the volume on my TV and iPad remote app still operated the Apple TV unit. I've been hardcore loyal to Apple since 1980, yep, even owned a Newton! This is the first Apple product that has failed, and sadly will be returned for a lower tech streaming device. Maybe I Got a lemon but Caveat Emptor...

I love all things apple, so of corse I preordered a new Apple TV. This is by far the worse product Apple released, it barely works. Crashes constantly with apps and just on it's own. Controlling it with a control system is a horrible thing as well, making it hard to sale in the custom installer market. That aside in apps like Netflix and Hulu sometimes the play and pause buttons won't work. Just over all feels like they didn't bother testing the thing, I'd wait about 6 months for them to patch it, before you buy it. Very sad showing on Apples part when 90% of products they make just work. It feels very android like and gimic-y.

the Apple TV sucks! the remote is so bland and without detail that it is hare to know which way is up! So it is often facing the wrong way and you have to turn it around to use. The track pad is so over sensitive that it difficult to stop it on the movie etc. that you want. It is so over sensitive that the drop down menus frequently show up my accident. On top of that the new apps section is stupid On the old apple tv you could create station buttons on the radio app. Now you have to search for the stations you like every time you want to listen to radio. I plan to exchange this for the standard model.

Cutting the cord? Read this first! We cut the cord about 11 months ago. We have 3 smart TV's, 2 Apple TV's 32 GB and one Roku for 4K (bought this beauty at Costco) Apple TV is just AWFUL! The remote is hard to get used to, the Apple TV wont download updates(we have 250 download WIFI Xfinity), live TV pauses all the time and sometimes I cant even get it to load HULU. BUT our Roku from Costco works AWESOME! Seriously no issues at all. TAKE MY ADVICE, SKIP THE APPLE TV AND JUST GET A ROKU

I am sitting here trying to restore my apple TV when this email comes in to review apple TV. Apparently I need a USB-C adapter to USB to restore it on my computer. This is also known as a Belkin adapter. IT DID NOT COME WITH MY APPLE TV. Why? I have had it for 3 months and it needs to be restored. Why can't I use HDMI to restore it. Now I have to drive to the store to by this SPECIAL adapter. I have a box of 50 cables but not this one. I don't even know if it will restore yet. I am extremely unhappy with Apple right now.

I consider my self somewhat of an apple expert. I have quite a few apple products and love their ease of use (I do not like the big price tag though but oh well). I waited over a month before buying this. Took it home and got it set up except to where I was supposed to sign in with my apple ID. It would not take it. I tried everything...resetting it, reformatting it, signing in with my iphone to it...nothing. So I took it back. First apple product I have ever done that with. My advice is to wait a year so they can work all of the kinks out.

My second Apple TV. Had a second generation which had an annoying tendency for audio skipping. Gave it to my daughter because I wanted a new one and expected the audio issue to be improved. Boy, was I wrong. With time, it's gotten worse. Despite resetting, the skipping is so bad on music and audio with movies or TV shows that the Apple TV is unusable other than looking at pics. I'm going to go to the Apple Store and try to get them to exchange my $150 doorstop, but based on my experiences, I wouldn't waste money on another.

I was really excited to purchase and set up the new Apple TV. I was anticipating a simple plug and play installation to replace my 3rd generation unit. When I looked at the connections I did not see the Optical Output Toslink interface. One would think that most users would want this capability to interface to a home theater system, so what is Apple thinking? This is a deal breaker for me and I am returning the unit ASAP. I am really disappointed as I wanted the new features and unfortunately Apple has really let me down
