I'm a PC/Android guy. This has been painful...

I grew up during the start of the computer age and have always been a tech geek at heart. I never got on the Apple bandwagon, because I like the ability to customize and control my devices. I see the appeal with Apple, but the few times I tried to delve into the Apple world have always been frustrating experiences which always leave me for features and functionality only available in the non-Apple world. My Apple TV has allowed my experience to remain consistent. Let me first state that this Apple TV device was purchased for 1 reason only. I have subscribed to DirecTV Now and it is one of only a few options that currently support the service. The device arrived in great shape and unboxing the product was exciting. It always seems that Apple always excels at packaging and appearance. My love quickly stopped when I had to set up the device. Of course, no Android apps, so a manual setup was required. I have an old iTunes account, and this is where my 2-hour journey started. To keep this shorter than 2 hours for reading, basically I had to reset my password which after successful required re-verifying my Apple ID which would not work. Several calls to support and almost 2 hours later, I could login to my existing account. But that didn’t end my frustration. When I tried downloading the free DirecTV Now app, I get another error message that my credit card needs to be verified. Oh my chickens! I go to my PC and login to Apple and put in my updated credit card information. Go back to download the app on the Apple TV and still get the verification message. This prompts yet another call to Apple support. Well, I can't verify my credit card without doing so from an Apple "i" device or through the actual iTunes software. So. I download and install iTunes and then I go through the verification process again. Finally, I can go to the Apple TV and start the app download. It is painfully slow. I'm really surprised how disappointing this experience has been for me so far. Why do I need a credit card on file if I'm not downloading anything that costs $? In fact, why must I have an Apple ID at all just to use the DirecTV Now free app to stream content? And why is the download speed so poor. My network is very fast and the signal is strong at the device. I also tried downloading the available update. I could not get it to complete. The estimated time for download was between 30-45 minutes on each of my attempts. It would never complete. Why are Apple's servers so slow? One thing I did really like is the simplicity of the remote. It is not completely intuitive for me, but is nicer than anything Android. Apple, why can't you play a little more nicely with those outside the Apple loyalists?

    Riddled With Bugs

I was excited to purchase the new Apple TV. I had 3 of the 3rd generation Apple TVs and was looking forward to the App Store. In general, the new features are cool, but there are a number of bugs that impact the basic functioning of the device. Apple is becoming more like Microsoft everyday. For example, streaming from iTunes from my computer, there is a lot of buffering, the screen goes blank and sometimes the screen freezes and only the soundtrack moves forward. My old Apple TVs never exhibited this behaviour. This is a known issue - several people complaining about it on Apple support. I have 300MBPs internet service and I typically get 60 to 70 MBPs where the Apple TV is positioned. Given, that there were no problems with prior Apple TVs, I don't believe it is a network problem. For some reason, when using Airplay from an iPhone, if the screen locks, the airplay will discontinue. This was not exhibited in my prior Apple TVs. Other people are noting similar issues on Apple Support forums. Netflix, Vevo, You Tube all work fine. The Apple TV 4 is much snappier than prior Apple TVs. The App store is pretty cool, but limited at this time. The HDMI sometimes loses connection with my TV. Not sure if this is device specific or across the Apple TV 4 range. In general - the device has a lot of potential - but it does not have Apple's usual "It Just Works" approach to functionality. I will likely return it and repurchase when the next iteration of the Operating System is released.

This is a review for the initial release of the Gen 4 Apple TV 32GB. The interface isn't as cluttered but there is a lot of missing functionality. Love the size of the new remote but the swipe touch surface is hit or miss. It seems pretty inconsistent. The screensavers are amazing but the video quality for playing movies and TV shows is worse than the Gen3. There are lot of stutters and pauses even with lots of bandwidth. Hulu's App(not made by Apple) is really buggy and the video quality is pretty bad. There are a lot of missing features (e.g. can't change name of device, bluetooth keyboards don't work on Gen4 now, parental controls don't consistantly work,, audio is hit or miss, DTS doesn't seem to always work, etc.). Overall the device seems to have a lot of horsepower but the software isn't quite ready yet. I would wait until they get some of these things fixed before buying one. Hopefully they will get a lot of the issues fixed before Christmas so it can be used as nice little presents for loved ones. Right now, my advice is to hold off.

I was excited to get the new Apple TV after loving my old one, but I am so disappointed in this upgrade. I read all these great reviews and think maybe I got lemon? Who knows. Either way, I'll share my issues with this machine. First, set up was easy as it is on all Apple products and having the App Store has proved useful. That's where the good stops. I've had consistent issues with the video playing, but the sound being choppy. It's almost like it skips. I went to the Apple message boards to learn I wasn't the only one having this issue, so I decided to hard line my Apple TV in as many people assumed it was a wifi issue. Nope, still happening. Next we tried a new better HDMI, really exhausting our efforts, didn't help. These sound issues happen about 75% of the time when we watch anything from our iTunes account or Netflix. Speaking of Netflix, it frequently errors out and we struggle to get it going again. At times the video will just freeze while the sound keeps playing, again with iTunes and Netflix. I have none of these issues with any other streaming device (Xbox One & PlayStation) including my other older Apple TV. All of those devices use wifi to stream. Lastly, the remote. I can see where Apple was trying to go, but they failed. The touch pad is a little too sensitive making navigating or entering a password very frustrating at times. The Siri feature is nice, but would be better if I could talk to the Apple TV without needing to use the remote, because let's be honest, we all loose it because it's so small. Overall I am just not impressed, I prefer the older Apple TV model, it's more reliable

OK I got my new Apple TV from the Apple Store this morning. I have an older Apple TV & Roku 3 box. I had to get this since I love my electronics & love having the new things that come out. If you have an older Apple TV I would say don't upgrade unless you are a gamer & have kids & if so, get the 64gb because you will run out of room quick. I really feel they hyped this up just like they did with the Iphone 6s. There made a big deal that there will be apps on this Apple TV. There are not many at all. The games are more for kids. The thing that is different is that you don't have to have all those channels the older Apple TV puts on your screen. Now you can choose what you want on it. I thought you would be able to have apps like your phone but no. That is so disappointing. The remote is nothing big either. I actually like the older one better. I am also having a problem syncing the blue tooth to my phone & a keyboard. So I am not that impressed. I also still think Roku blows Apple TV away when it comes to channels. Roku has thousands when Apple TV has just a few. Now if you are looking at the new Roku 4, don't waste your money on that one. The fan inside it is super loud. They need to fix that problem. OK so that is it. I say stick with a Roku 3 or an older Apple TV

We have 5 iPhones, 3 iPads, 4 MacBooks, apple watch, and an Apple TV Gen 3....we are buried in the Apple Ecosystem....but I am hugely disappointed in the new Apple TV First...no 4K...that is a huge disappointment. Especially since Roku 4 and Amazon Fire have 4K. There were lots of bugs at the get go....the updates have fixed some of them....but it is still buggy and took away functionality that Gen 3 had....still can't get a good screen saver using my own photos working without seeing the same 100 pics over and over. Make sure if you purchase this you do the software update right away to avoid all the early bugs that were there. Main reason I purchased it in addition to a Roku 4 is that I am in the Apple ecosystem and it works well with all of our music. The only thing I would recommend this for is if you manage all your music on iTunes and subscribe to music match or Apple Music....they did do a great job in their implementation of Apple Music...I'm really happy with how the interface is set up. It does work well for non 4K Netflix, Apple Movies, etc but there is no Amazon prime movie app as of right now so if you have Prime, you need another box to stream that.

We bought this AppleTV as a replacement for their 2nd gen device. The biggestbreason for the change was the ability to add apps and reduce the need for AirPlay off an iPad. While the added apps, including PS Vue, are great, there are a few key places where the device falls short. 1. The remote is HORRIBLE. A definite step back from the old remote. The swipe is difficult to control and ends up adding time, not reducing time, to maneuver around the screen and apps. 2. Functionality: apps and groups of apps will be grayed out for no apparent reason. Seems to be a known bug with no fix from what i can tell, 3. Photostream: smaller item, but we really liked the ability to stream our photos from the Mac to the tv. Apple made this functionality much more convoluted to the point that we can't even connect with our Mac at this point. This is a great example of a company changing this that don't need to be changed, just for the sake of change. Hopefully the next iteration will have more robust functionality and usability. Also, if thinking about upgrading from a 2nd gen, i would suggest you wait.

I'm not biased when it comes to media players. I've used Western Digital , Roku, and Android. I own several Apple products (iPhone, iPad, iPad mini) however this player just doesn't live up to the hype. Although the interface of the apps themselves look great compared to my Roku 3 & 4, the apps seem to always crash, freeze up, etc. I've encountered this often with Netflix, Plex, and the new PS Vue (although it just came out so some issues are expected). Typically the fix is to restart the device. I've got plenty of IT experience but there is only so much troubleshooting you can do on a locked down device. The Siri integration may be great but overall the remote control is a mess functionality wise but I just use my Logitech Harmony. My MXQ Pro Player beats this thing out in terms of reliability. I would stay away from this player unless you have been an exclusive Apple user since day 1 and need the integration with all your devices.

I bought this to replace my aging Apple TV. It's more money than the last generation but I figured the voice controls would be nice and the faster processor would load content faster. But this unit is much more buggy than my old ATV, it freezes or restarts itself enough to be annoying. There is a constant lag when using the remote. The voice controls are so bad they are useless. By the time Siri gets what you are saying you could have just found it the old way. I love the ability to stream to the Apple TV from all of my devices but that's possible on the older cheaper option. I'd recommend waiting until Apple finally gets Siri on the same level as Alexa or OK Google, and hopefully stops requiring you to need the remote for voice commands ( more like Amazons Alexa speaker). In the end this devices is not advanced enough for the price so you may as well wait for the next gen or buy the old cheap one, I wish I had.

I usually think apple makes exceptional products I have their iMacs, iPhones, iPads, and have purchased every generation of the apple tv. BUT this Apple tv is a JOKE!!! it has a lot of potential but it was not even close to being ready for public release. The remote is what makes the few good things about the apple tv disappear. It is the worse remote I've ever tried in any of the streaming boxes. I like that all my apple products communicate between each other but I can also do that with my 3rd gen apple tv. Save your money don't buy this just yet! Maybe in the future with updates and more apps this could be a great streaming box but right now the ROKU 4 is much much better!!!

The Apple TV is pricey. I was looking for an upgrade to my old Roku, but got talked into this. The setup is really easy. The reception is great and the response time is pretty good. But the remote is the most awful thing ever created. It has no buttons, just an invisible mouse at the top end, and once you figure out where the adjustments for the mouse are, there are only three options for sensitivity. I set it on the least sensitive setting and it still freaks out even when you just pick it up or move it. The swiping is inconsistent. Every once in a while it will pause a program when I have not touched it. I bought a Roku for my other TV, and even though the setup takes longer, it’s much, much easier to use. Save the $50! Buy the Roku!

Pros: Screen mirroring, Apple TV cast of iTunes music, built in YouTube. Cons: Touted as an intuitive, near piece of art, the remote couldn't be more ridiculously opposite. It is extremely small with no grip and it constantly slips out of my hand. You are required to do most navigating by swiping, and, maybe it's me, but I'm either landing past or before my selection. (Right before I drop it.) There is no distinction between the top or bottom of the small, sleek, jet black device. I guess you're supposed to use your "Apple Insticts" to intuit the difference. But be careful. The little guy is so sensitive that if you pick it up the wrong way, you just might be watching episodes of "Full House" by accident.

THE REMOTE IS JUST AWFUL. Whoever invented this touchpad remote must have never tested it in the dark. The slightest brush of fingers across the edges causes the tv screen to display the bottom scrubber bar. Touch it again and the play head whizzes ahead or back 4-5 minutes...even at the least sensitive setting. And why didn't Apple put LEDs behind the buttons? In a dark room, you need a flashlight to tell one slick black button from the other slick black button! My roku remote has motion activated illumination, making it easy to use in the dark.

I've had all the previous generations of this device and really expected more... quite the disappointment! Hoped for more benefits, better audio and video output (no 4K or atmos audio output).... The remote isn't hard to use, but not really user friendly.... takes FOREVER to scroll through your library as you can't hold a button down to scroll... you have to keep "flicking" the touch pad. No dedicated Movie app like there is for music so pulling your movie library is kind of odd. 64gb would have been overkill, as it is, doubt I will ever fill 32gb. With technology the way it is... I feel this is lacking emencly. Would recommend waiting to see if they come out with a new version with better quality output.

Apple took 4 years for a follow up to the AppleTV 3. I expected more than this. Aesthetics are beautiful as expected and it feels much more refined and expensive feeling than the dated "new" interface of the ROKU 4 I also own. But that's about it. The touch remote is hard to use and feels nothing like my iPhone or iPad in responsiveness, and it's overall limited by Apple wanting iTunes to control your media. And no 4K. The ROKU 4 allows you the plug in a USB portable drive (formatted Windows or Mac) and play your videos instantly. It has private channels and 4K. I own everything Apple makes, but the new AppleTV 4 is a disappointment. The only reason I keep it is for AirPlay.,

I like the idea of being able to select which apps I want as compared to my Apple TV Gen 3's "I wish they would add this or that." Less maneuvering involved when you can remove the garbage that you will never use or has no interest to you. HOWEVER!! Big however, the remote is the worst Apple device I have experienced so far. It is on a par with the Apple Magic Mouse. It is overly sensitive, to the point of selecting items you do not want to select and having to constantly go back to try again. As with the Magic Mouse, just barely touch it and it responds before you are ready for it to do so. The overly sensitive touch-pad on the remote is a game-killer for me.

Though I do like the newly developed remote that comes with the new Apple TV, it lacks sorely in that you cannot use the Apple Remote app with this as of yet. What does this mean? Every time you have to enter a password you must do it with the new remote. I use very long passwords, and even just to buy a ninety-nine cent app means I have to go through the exercise, again, of entering a twenty-five character password. No thanks app developers, I'll wait until Apple updates their Remote app so I can copy and paste. And yes, you have to go through this exercise with your iTunes passwords and iCloud passwords just to get it going.

Apple TV is ok except having to pay $99 a year to side-load apps with an Apple Developer account. I have had my Apple TV for about 2 weeks and my remote is already shattered in to 100 pieces! Did not know the remote was made of glass like a cell phone...no protective case available and not even a fragile sticker on the remote to let you know....called apple to see about warranty...fat chance! they will do nothing but charge me $52 to repair or i go buy a new one at Best Buy for $79. I have had satellite tv remotes for 4 and 5 years at a time...thrown all over the living room... and never broken one. Very frustrating!

I currently have a Roku 4k as i just wanted a change. I purchased this to return it the next day. Reason being is there hasn't been major upgrades to them to make it worth it. The best you can get is 1080p picture. I also noticed the picture quality and colors were off. Its because I have a 4k TV so the apple couldn't match some of the qualities. The other reason I stayed with the Roku is it was cheaper and provided a better picture and most of the same features. I found it annoying to that all the apps that i downloaded for my Apple TV appeared on my phone.

First issue is that it's more difficult to get to the stuff you didn't actually download from Apple. I preferred my own movies to be on the main screen. I can deal with that though... Annoying as it is. The remote however is horrible. Technically it "works" but it's awkward and when you are watching a movie it's too easy to scroll ahead if you even just touch it. It's also hard to tell which part is the track pad part and which is not. You have to read the buttons, which wouldn't be a problem if you don't watch movies in the dark...
