iPad Air 2 as an upgrade from an iPad 2

Quick summary: The iPad Air 2 tablet is smaller, lighter, easier to hold, has a higher resolution screen, better cameras, fingerprint security, Siri, faster wireless connectivity (with current 802.11ac routers), is faster to load apps, has the same or slightly longer battery life, AND comes with additional useful productivity apps that were extra-cost with the 2011 iPad 2. Best Buy had a terrific sale on the 64GB iPad Air 2 recently, and my wife agreed that it was time to upgrade her 2011 64GB iPad 2. In comparison to the iPad 2, the iPad Air 2 (introduced in the fall of 2014) running iOS 8.3 weighs less, has a significantly higher-resolution Retina display screen, has a rear-facing camera of much higher resolution, and faster apparent response time to load apps and web pages compared with her iPad 2 running iOS 5.1 using the same wireless 2.4Ghz 802.11n router connected via a 20Mbit/sec fiber optic internet service provider. (We haven't upgraded our router to 5Ghz or 802.11ac yet). The suite of productivity apps included now (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and GarageBand) were all extra-cost purchases from the iOS App Store in 2011 but are now included at no extra cost. The fingerprint touch-sensor to unlock and authorize purchases is a nice addition, but it doesn't seem essential to us, a retired couple, for a device used primarily by one person at home for email, videos, games, photos, music, and light word processing more than 95% of the time. (No grandkids yet!) And then there's Siri. Siri was not available on iPad 2. At this point, for use with a tablet, Siri seems more like an interesting sideshow than a compelling feature. Rather than set up the iPad Air 2 as a new device, I restored the saved backup of the iPad 2 using iTunes on a Mac computer via the USB-Lightning cable without ANY problems. Restoring about 26GB of music, photos, documents, and apps took less than an hour. Every add-on app previously installed had an update available for the newer iOS version though I tried a handful of apps without updating, and they ran just fine. Several old iOS 5 legacy Apple apps that were since replaced like YouTube and Google Maps were not re-installed. You can still access them, they're no longer automatically installed. Perspective: We were early adopters of the second-generation iPad 2, ordering one the week it was announced in spring 2011. My wife was never comfortable using a PC with Windows and Microsoft Office. When she retired, she wanted 'something' for email and occasional word processing. She doesn't use Facebook or other social media (yet). The iPad 2 fit her needs perfectly in 2011. She has been the primary user of the iPad 2, because it offered her convenient browsing, email, music, photos and light office tasks WITHOUT the burden of Windows or the weight and size of a laptop or the need to start up and shut down. Just flip open the Smart-cover, and you're ready to go. I deliberately stopped upgrading the iPad 2 iOS at version 5.1.1 because the 2nd generation iPad hardware and all the apps she wanted worked smoothly on iOS5. Over the last 4 years, performance of the iPad 2 has remained consistently fast and battery life of the 4-year-old tablet is still in the range of 7 or 8 hours, but recently there were a handful of newer apps she would like to use that required a newer version of iOS. Eventually the iOS 5 version of Safari was no longer capable of handling a few of her favorite websites, and ordering online from some of her favorite stores became a problem. Yes, upgrading the iPad 2 iOS to iOS8 IS possible, but scores of Apple Support Community forum users complained about very slow performance after doing so. It makes sense, because the 2014 A8X processor and GPU is about 8-times faster than the 2011 iPad 2 A5 processor and GPU on benchmark tasks. For others considering upgrading from older iPads, there may be a learning curve, if you have not kept up with iOS updates. Apple has made enough changes to the way the iOS 8 system works that it is not possible to simply pick up the iPad Air 2 and use everything EXACTLY the way it worked on iOS 5. The charge/docking connector also changed, so the Camera Connection Kit that worked with the iPad 2 either requires purchasing a 30-pin legacy connector to Lightning-connector adapter, or requires purchasing new cables. Since both my Macs have SD-card slots, I load our Canon digital camera photos onto a Mac first and then upload the 'keepers' to iCloud to share. For me, the most disturbing change from iPad 2 to iPad Air 2 is the hideous fluorescent icons that replaced the beautiful sculpted skeuomorphic icons of earlier iOS versions.

The iPad Air 2 does everything my recently broken 4+-year-old iPad 2 did, but does it faster and at less than half the weight. It also adds Siri, fingerprint recognition, triples the resolution of the camera, adds Retina resolution AND an anti-glare screen, and more. So it is noticeably better in every way and I'm psyched to have the latest and greatest iPad (except that they introduced the iPad Pro a few days after I bought this!) The only issue I really have is paying $525 for it (and that was on sale.) It just seems a bit pricey for a tablet no matter how good it is...especially given that last year's model is 90% the same but now available for about $100 less. I think Apple is gauging us all a bit, but I continue to buy their products because they are well-designed, easy to use, and full of clever features. My wife brought home a Surface Pro from the office, and it is an excellent machine, with many cool features. Unfortunately, after about a month of using it, she's ready to throw it out the window because it is buggy and doesn't work about 1/3 of the time. So I'm sticking with Apple, because their tech is smart, beautiful AND reliable.

I decided to pull the trigger on upgrading from my iPad 3 to the iPad Air 2 before I was leaving for an international trip, the change is nothing short of amazing, the latest and greatest iPad is lightning fast in all applications, insanely thin and with smaller bezels, it has a smaller footprint yet it retains the same screen size from past generations but with a more crisp display. The touch ID sensor is a great addition and is faster than typing in a passcode, but my favorite change is the weight, having owned an original iPad and a 3, the weight of the air 2 is fantastic and makes the device easy to hold with one hand, all while retaining the premium craftsmanship you expect from Apple. Do yourself a favor, opt for the 64GB flavor, you'll thank yourself down the road... Best Buy occasionally puts iPad's up for sale at a discount, or you can use a 10% off email code they occasionally send so you can get a great price on an excellent product.

I bought this to replace my iPad 2 that I had dropped. It still works but the screen is cracked. I couldn't believe how much lighter, thinner and faster it is than my old iPad, and it is a lot easier to hold when using it. Well worth the money. I got a 64gb with retina display for the same price I paid for my old 32gb iPad 2.

Pretty much everything has already been said about the iPad Air 2, but here is my take. I purchased this after a lot of research and back and forth trying to decide between this and android options available. What finally made up my mind is my belief that this device will remain a quality, viable, usable product for at least a few years based on Apple's track record. This came from my own experience and rom talking to others. I purchased an Ipad Air 2 to replace an iPad 2 that I have been using for years and was starting to show its age. I take my iPad with me to work every day in my backpack and to protect it I have put it in a very durable hard shell/bumper case. Even with that case on the Air 2 is lighter than my old iPad 2. One of the things that I really like about the Air 2 is the new screen that really puts everything close to the surface and has far less glare than my old iPad too. The speed while browsing is excellent, and on par with my desktop computer no matter how busy the website gets. The speakers are a huge improvement over my old iPad in clarity and volume, but they are still located on the bottom only. I wish they would figure out a way to put them on the top and bottom so that you can get some stereo separation watching videos or playing hames in landscape mode. This fact and the fact that Apple still will not put a chip slot in its products so that you have to pay a far higher price for for more memory than it would cost on a Micro-SD are why I give the iPad Air 2 4 Stars instead of 5.

My new iPad is my first Apple product. Why did I wait so long? I've never loved using any computer, but the iPad is a joy to use. It's light - A great size with a great display - Easy to use and I'm taking the Apple classes at Best Buy to find out more about the full scope of its use. I transferred the photos from my Nikon Camera into it - It's easy to edit and send pics. Also the iPad's camera is fun to use - So easy to snap and send. I download books also and use it as a reader. I also feel that the OS is more secure and that's important to me. Best Buy set it up for me when I purchased it, so I didn't have to travel to the Apple Store. I don't have any complaints.

I love this tablet...the size is perfect, ease to handle, it's very lite, yet very powerful. It has quick speed/connection to the internet. 64GB is more than enough storage. I you have an IPhone, then an I pad is a must. This is another homerun for Apple...

I bought this for my wife to replace her many-year-old MacBook Pro. She mostly likes to watch Netflix in bed, check e-mails and Facebook, but I wanted to be sure she had the best possible for whatever she wanted to do, including going to more school in the future. She loves it! I cannot pry her away from it, and she is always getting on to me for trying to use it all the time :) For the Netflix in bed part of it, a bigger screen was a must, but I didn't want it to be too heavy. Hence the iPad Air 2. Perfect fit! Nice, big Retina screen and very light, not burdensome to hold. It's also very powerful for all of your productive needs. If she goes back to school a simple keyboard case will essentially turn it into a laptop. The sound that comes out of the (now) dual speakers is actually impressive. Beautiful product, highly recommend!

Really glad I waited for the Air 2 - love the light weight, gorgeous screen, and the super fast processor speed & extra RAM, plus great wifi reception and outstanding battery life. Didn't think I'd care too much about TouchID but it actually works well and is quite convenient. Sound/speaker quality is pretty amazing, given the limitations of the thin body. If you're holding it in your hands, you'll definitely feel it vibrate when music or vids are playing (esp the bass frequencies). It's a non-issue for me since I tend to keep the ipad on a stand or use cans. I mainly use my ipad for music creation, visual art-making, as a research+writing tool and as a centralized e-reader (kindle, ibook, googleplay, pdfs, etc). Overall, a 5 star purchase, made sweeter by BB's great black friday promotion.

I've been slogging along with my older iPad 2 for several years now. Best Buy had a sale on the Air 2, so I decided to make the jump and upgrade. If you have any pre-air iPad, the thinness and lightness alone is worth the upgrade. It's just so much easier to hold now, and there's far less fatigue when holding it with one hand. My iPad 2, feels like a thick, heavy brick by comparison. The retina screen is gorgeous, and for the Air 2, Apple has added an anti-glare coating on the screen that helps quite a bit when using the device outdoors. The Air 2 is blazing fast too. Apps load lightning quick. Everything is super responsive. Being so fast helps to future proof the device. I should be able to get 4 or maybe even 5 years out of it before needing to upgrade again.

There isn't much that's new (feature-wise) for a seasoned iPad owner, however this was my first iPad upgrade in over 3 years. My old iPad had slowed down over the years due to Apple updates that just don't work as efficiently on old devices as they should. This iPad Air 2 is lightning fast and very light. I can hold this device one handed and read my books, which is nice. It's a slimmer package as well, and the Retina display is as nice as always. The fingerprint reader seems to work better than my iPhone 5S and is a nicer addition to the iPad than I had expected. All in all, if you're in need of an iPad or at least want to purchase a newer device, this is a great way to go. Apple's always improving their devices and this is no exception.

I was really just looking for a tablet, since my old one recently stopped working. I was browsing Ipad's and came upon this Ipad Air 2, it felt super good (weight wise), love the gold color i got, great screen size and testing it out at the store, it's really easy to navigate and use. Love the beautiful display, the colors are well-balanced and vibrant. Very easy to use the keypad, and the response is pretty quick. Overall, this ipad is great for everyday, simple email checking, watching movies, playing light games. But, what made me love it even more, is i can totally substitute it as my laptop in class. Very easy and convenient for on the go. I 100% recommend you to give it a go, you won't regret it.

I have had an iPhone the past 3 yrs but this is my first iPad. I figured I would like it, but I LOVE it. It is so quick and easy to grab and check email, look up something on the web, take pics (great quality), plan geocache adventures, and play games. Tried using a cover with a keyboard but it really takes away from the simplicity of the whole idea, so I returned it for a simple cover with a strap to keep it closed. It's been over a month and I now only use my laptop when I am using word or excel, because the full size keyboard is just much faster to speed type and calculate. The battery life is great and overall, it's a sleek, fast operating device for use on and off the web!

The light weight and thin, smooth design make the IPad Air 2 very easy to handle. Love the quality of both cameras (especially the FaceTime camera). Everything runs well and screen rotation is fast. The only complaints I have are that sometimes Safari freezes and the iPad restarts and also sometimes when closing an app the screen flashes a strange blue color. Overall, I love it

Replacing my older iPad was worth it. The Air2 is far faster. The anti-reflective screen is a definite improvement; the glare is reduced and I don't need to clean as often. Better camera, less weight; all around better. The multitasking offered with iOS9 is a feature I use often. Recommend at least 64G and checking sale prices.

I Have had an iPhone for many years but I never jumped on the iPad. I thought about it since it launched but kept saying I'll wait until the next version. Finally when the iPad air 2 came out it had all the features I wanted. The new bonded screen looks great. The speed and performance is excellent. I used an iPad 4 at work for a while and I was surprised how much smaller and lighter the Air actually feels. I can actually hold it in one hand. Top it all off with a great deal at Best Buy Thanksgiving day and I'm very happy with my purchase.

I purchased the iPad Air 2 as a Christmas present for my wife (she had wanted one for quite a while). But, I had my reservations after her Macbook Air (13", 2011 model) failed just under two-years, and she really doesn't utilize the OS X features to the fullest. Plus, I personally prefer Android and we both primarily use Windows. However, I recognized that the iPad Air 2 is a superior product based on reviews and personally experience (in-law's older model iPad 2). One benefit is that it syncs seamlessly with my wife's iPhone, and, in terms of the user interface, it's essentially the same. The user interface is friendly, simple to use, and easy to navigate. Already, it has replaced her ultrabook for general web-surfing and basic productivity apps. Along with it, I purchased an inexpensive $15 smart case (hard case, soft cover) which fits "like a glove" - so, no issue with 3rd party accessory. Together, they feel extremely rigid and durable, and feel very comfortable in the hands. It's notably lighter and smaller compared to the iPad 2, and feels more compact and portable. The Retina display is incredible; this is our first device of that caliber resolution and there's no turning back now. The battery life is excellent and provides over 10 hours of light use (no games or media). I did test the video capability and briefly played a movie, and the performance was excellent (no lag or delays). The App store and Itunes Store are also great. The only concern I have is the inability to upgrade storage (which is common with Apple products), but we get by with 3rd party cloud storage for general data (music, pictures, documents, etc.). In summary, we decided to stay within the Apple family for my wife (I'm still Windows/Android) for compatbility/seamlessly user integration, and also for the superior aspects of the product as mentioned. I can't compare with other similar products, but the iPad Air 2 meets or exceeds our expectations for our needs including portability, long battery life, solid construction, 3rd party accessory compatibility, and performance.
