    WAIT FOR THE SEVENTH GENERATION

OK I admit I'm not the most technologically savvy person around, but hey it's an I-pod how smart do you have to be....apparently smarter than me. I use my I-pod for running, so when my first generation Nano poo-poo’d I figured it was time for a new one. I’d been pretty happy with my original Nano despite its reputation for fragility. I wanted the fifth generation, but they’re hard to find so I decided to take the technological leap. So what do I think? If you are into the latest and greatest this is for you. I f you value things such as an on-off switch you may want to look at other options. It’s a bit costly, but hey I knew that going in so no whining. OK, the meat of my complaints. The touch screen is small, yet fits four icons. What does that mean? Well unless you have fingers the size of Tinkerbelle it can be a bit challenging to hit the correct one. If you can pull this off while running you can probably play a xylophone while juggling. Icons can also be a bit finicky. Sometimes I press and press and nothing. Other times I’m in the general vicinity and all sorts of things happen. Note too that since it uses icons there’s no pressing while not looking, you have to see the icons to use them, good luck on that while on the move. No on/off switch! Call me old fashioned but I’m a big fan of this little guy, unfortunately Apple isn’t. Finally came to find out that you only have a “sleep” switch. Kind of works like an on/off with the exception that your I-pod must be paused for you to use it. If you’re playing music you have to pause it first, if you’re not playing music you need to start and then pause. Sorry way to complicated. What was so wrong with the on/off button? Some other oddities. Sometimes my nano will take a long pause. It’ll finish a song and I’ll have to wait over 30 seconds for the next song. First few times it happened I figured the battery was dead…nope. I then figured that after it got to the end of the play list it took awhile to get to the top again (kind of like the end of an album). Bottom line? I have no idea why this happens. I’ve also had a problem where it will start to play a song, stop and then start the same song over, and over and over. One great idea, it comes with a clip. Yes you can clip it to a pocket and it’s secure. The only downside to this is that it’s a little tough to use. If Apple would have bent the lever up or roughed up the edge it would have made it easier to use.

This unit is a technological marvel with sleek Apple design and features. I wanted a unit to play music when I jog or workout, so I like the built-in clip and the lack of other features did not bother me. Easy to use and FM reception is ok with local stations but battery life is only 2-3 hours. It recharges in about 30 minutes but has to be done too frequently. I like the fact that this device is now the size of a shuffle but I would glady accept a 50% increase in size or weight to get a battery that would last 8-10 hours. The lack of a power off switch is a problem given the short battery life. As with most Apple products, a screen protector is needed. When Apple gets the battery problem resolved, I would give it 5 stars but until then, shame on them for bringing the product to market with this battery, especilly for the price they charge.

3 overall stars. PROS: easy to use and set up, built-in pedometer, ample size, sleek & compact. CONS: no power off button (it goes in sleep mode where battery slowly trickles away), no video ability, touchscreen sometimes a little tricky.

A little disappointed this new version does not have the ability to play without the headpones. Otherwise, a great product for kids and a good size.

Too many moves to remember to operate the touch screen, and the screen itself could be a little bigger, along with the icons and font size.
