    Great compact computer!

I got this Mini at the Apple retail store the day it came out. I had the old style one before this one as well. Well this one is way better! The fan is 100% silent when at idle, though the tempatures stay low. It is a great little computer and a good "first Mac" for anyone!

    excellent desktop replacement unit.

    Posted .

Lets say you want to replace your old desktop or mac, but don't want to spend a bundle. And lets say you have a monitor, keyboard, speakers, and a mouse that you like, and don't want to replace. The only thing you really need is the cpu. This is your ticket. I have been using this unit for a few days now and the only down side is that it does get a little warm on the top of the unit when it is reading a CD or DVD. Not hot, just a little warm. It is absolutly cool to the touch otherwise. The fan is silent. In fact, I can not detect any noise from this unit at all. My typing is louder than this unit. It is every bit as fast as my mac book pro with the 2.4 processer. The video quality and screen quality are clear, and clean. You can run two monitors on this unit at the same time. It has all the programs that a Mac comes with standard, including photo booth, which requires an external camera that is not included. I have read the complaints about the fact that it does not come with a mouse or keyboard. For me, thats no problem. I have a great monitor and keyboard and I didn't want to change them and I purchased a magic mouse when I bought this unit. It hooked up easely. The bluetooth and 802.11 work great. I can not believe they got everything in this little unit. I will upgrade the memory in a few months, And that will be easy. I have a 1.5 TB external hard drive that hooked up with no problems and although the 320 GB internal hard drive is small by todays standards, It is fine for what I need. If you are looking for a gaming computer, this is not for you. Although it does play some light games just fine. If you are needing a computer that does email and surfs, edits photos and movies, word process's and graphs, you know, everything your macbook pro does, but with the ability of connecting two 24" external screens to, then this is your computer. Granted, it does not have the portability of a laptop, no monitor, no battery back up, but it does have HDMI and small portable keyboards are cheap. And this unit is actually smaller than a laptop. It takes up very little room. An external DVD drive takes up more room than this unit.

Full Apple desktop experience to go

    Posted .

I was waiting for an Apple mini to come out with an HDMI output so I could hook it up to my living room HDTV with just one cable. I have it set up with the wireless Apple keyboard and the wireless Magic Mouse and, let me tell you, it's amazing. I strongly recommend the Magic Mouse. I tried several other mice and all gave me issues with connectivity. The Magic Mouse works beautifully. Although the mini can play HD content without problems as it comes out of the box, I upgraded the RAM from 2 to 4Gb, just to have some more room in case I ever wanted to run some more intense applications. My only two complaints are: Apple does not support blu-ray playing, not even through an external drive. You have to install windows through bootcamp or virtual machine in order to get that option. I wish I could just buy a Mac Mini that played blu-ray discs. That would be the ultimate home theater computer. At the moment, the audio comes out by default through the built-in output, and it won't automatically switch to HDMI when you connect your mini through that cable. You have to go to System Preferences and select HDMI every time. Yes, if you shut down your mini, when you turn it on again it won't remember your choice and you will have to go to system preferences again to select HDMI out. I already contacted Apple costumer support and they say there is no current solution to that, but they took my suggestion so it might be added in a future software update. I have no idea if it will happen.

Compact, quiet, fast, capable, what's not to like?!

I purchased a Mac Mini in December 2010 for our home entertainment center, and added in an EyeTV device. Between the two, we can easily record movies and TV shows, edit them, and burn DVDs, all on the one computer. The beauty of using a Mac Mini for a DVR is that it's also a full-fledged computer, so we can also do all the usual Internet things as well as play games and and run other Mac software we like. One thing that that really surprised me was how much faster it is than my 2-year-old MacBook. X-Plane (flight simulator) is smooth as silk on it, and makes the flying experience great; plus I can turn on more display options for added realism. I was also surprised at how cool it stays, given there's no fan...at least I never hear one running. The form factor is also very nice. It's small, handsome, and fits just about anywhere.

    How Small can they go?

I wanted a computer that would fit in the bedroom without taking up alot of space. Mainly something for email and web surfing and such. A little video streaming as well. This computer fits the bill well and is much more. I have an iMac as well about 3 years old. Performance of the new Mac Mini is probably better and would much surely be with more memory than the supplied 2GB. I may add more later.. but it is really not required for my usage anyway. Video steaming is excellent to my 1080p HD TV. Smooth and stutter free. The HMDI output was one of the reasons I bought this Mac and no doubt it has much better performance than one of the lower priced netdesk Atom processor based units. I have loaded in Photoshops Elements and it does a good job with editing photos transferred in with the built in SD reader. The reader is on the back of the unit... a little hard to get to while reaching behind... but really not a big deal. I hve mine teamed with the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and Magic Mouse. This keeps all the four USB ports free. It does not have a BluRay DVD. I don't really are really. I have one already hooked to the TV and I am not really in love with BluRay anyway. This Mac Mini does everything I wanted. It was a bit on the expensive side, but you always expect that with Apple products. If I did not think they were worth it .. I would have bought something else.

Wonderful Product - well worth the cost!

I've been a PC user for many years, and work in the industry, so I'm familiar with all the good and bad things that can happen with any computer. Always wanted a Mac, and finally bought a new 17" MacBook Pro a couple years ago. It's been a great machine, no issues, and it ALWAYS worked! Decided I had had enough of PCs after using the MacBook Pro - so the next step was to eliminate my desktop and replace it with a Mac Mini. The Mini works even better than the MacBook Pro. There are several reasons I say this. First, it utilizes all my old hardware - monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers, even external drives, so the additional investment is not difficult to justify. After having it a few days, thought it was broken because it didn't make any noise. Well, it was only the aluminum block case dissipating the heat without having to use the fan. Like the MacBook Pro, the Mini was easy to set up, worked right out of the box, and hasn't missed a beat since I turned it on. The only thing I've done is increase the RAM to it's max, and that was a 2 minute procedure that anyone could do. Even tried to see if it would hiccup by attaching three RAID drives, making huge file copies from drive to drive, play music through iTunes, use dual monitors, surf using the wired 1GB connection, and install MS Office for Mac using the internal DVD drive - all at once. The Mini never broke a sweat. I've seen many cool tech products, and a pile of others who can't or won't deliver what they promised, but the two Mac products I have purchased have been very satisfying to use and own. Sure, I still use PCs in my job, but the frustration that goes along with multiple software vendors, incompatible driver updates, and all the other headaches that pop up in PC use just aren't there with the Mac products. In fact, I'm typing this review on the Mini now - and in summary, I'm a Mac user for life!

Don't know how they fit such a great product into such a small design but this is my first Mac so I decided to try the Mac mini because I didn't want to put a lot of money into something I wasn't sure I would like. I'm still getting used to the different programs and would definitely recommend getting the microsoft office program. I love the Mac mini and I got just the basic model but already thinking of adding more memory. It's fast, efficient and takes up very little room. I was able to connect it to my existing monitor with no problem.

Amazing core for home entertainment system

    Posted .

We purchased a mac mini to hook to a 46" LED - mainly to get the full bang out of iTunes (we have two 1st gen apple TVs and they just sometimes flake out, etc). My MacBook Pro does not have audio out from the HDMI so we decided on getting rid of the final PC in the house and replacing with this little gem. Price point is high - but then again, everything apple is high and we all pay it so its our own fault LOL. Does not come with keyboard or mouse - i picked up the wireless trackpad and wireless keyboard. Plugged it in via HDMI, it saw the keyboard and trackpad and bam - works perfectly, Excellent sound, excellent 1080i picture. Fonts are a little small so some tweaking needs to be done to see from 14 feet away, but picture from itunes, front row, iphoto is wonderful, crisp and clear. The hard drive is smaller than i would normally like, but I use a western digital terrabyte drive plugged into the mac mini (as well as one plugged into the apple airport) and storage is not an issue. Watching cbs.com, etc. is also now a pleasure on the nice big clear screen. Once central hub that now controls all the ipads, iphones, itouches and ipods in the house is very conveneint as well. we have consolidated both our libraries and stream to our laptops, the other computer in the house, the apple TVs, etc. With Lion OS coming out this summer, making the mac experience more like the iphone/ipad, bringing this to the forefront of the home entertainment system (command central) just make the most sense. For all the money i spend on itunes, being able to download and watch the movies, work on the computer, have TV running in the PIP just works for us. I considered Google TV or buying yet another apple tv and the mac mini not only answers our current entertainment and computing needs now, but also for at least another few years.

    My first Mac

    Posted .

This is my first Mac computer, I've had every version of Windows and every Linux Distro that you could think of, but never had a Mac mainly because I did not want to spent over a thousand dollars for a computer. With this one being around $700 I decided to take the plunge and was glad I did, setup was easy and I was online in no time. The next day I installed Windows 7 so I could do a dual boot just in case I need windows for those rare occasions, so far I've been using Mac only and the more I use it the more I realized I should have bought a MAC a long time ago. Great computer with decent power for the price.

One Thing a Window is good for.....

Throwing out your old PC . I'm a long time pc user and have been around Macs allot through friends and family etc and and swore I would never buy one trying to continuously prove that my PC was more than adequate . You have to stop lying to yourself like I was , you pay a little more for a computer designed for ( get this ) average everyday people and geeks who just want to USE their computer. What a great idea, no arcane messages about printer spools missing , ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DO THIS?,no you can't access that folder, or about five days from now you should be able to use me again ( no guarantees though) after this new update. That was a direct quote from my Windows 7 pc .Look I hate to rag on something for the sake of doing so and I'm sure Bill is great guy but if we all go out and buy the cheapest car it doesn't mean it's the best deal.....

    Better than I expected

Like many, I have been a PC user all my life. About a year ago I bought a new Dell with Win 7 and 6gb of ram. I have been very happy with that PC but have always wondered if I would have enjoyed a Mac more. We finally got to the point where our family needed another computer, so I hesitantly decided on the Mac mini. I have been nothing but impressed since day one. I am amazed at how even though it only has 2gb, it handles most tasks as quickly or quicker than my Dell with 6gb. I was very nervous about only having 2gb, but I can confidently say it is adequate. The mini runs absolutely silent, not too warm, and has had no issues so far. The Mac OS does takes some getting used to, but everything is intuitive and after a few days you will have it down. Occasionally I hook the mini up to our HD TV and stream Netflix. That is probably the greatest use of this machine is as an HTPC. Bottom line: I highly recommend getting this mini as is with the 2gb, you can always buy more RAM latter on. My next computer will be an iMac and this machine will move a full time HTPC. Windows 7 truly is great in my opinion, but the Mac's are just better. More polished OS, and great looking hardware. I'm sold......

    Excellent system

I took the Apple dive by buying the MAC Mini. I wanted to buy a iMac but I already had a screen and did not want to spend the money for the iMac. I really like this system, very fast, both the start up and shut down. I also bought the wireless mouse and keyboard and I love them. My wife is very impressed with the whole system, especially the replacement of a huge PC box with a small unit sitting on the desk. The unit is quiet and has enough ports to connect almost anything to it.

    Great for Media Center!

    Posted .

I purchased the Mac Mini about four month's ago, and in that time I'm amazed at the performance of this little baby. I transformed the Mini into a HTPC with the help of 3rd party software such as PLEX, I also bought the Apple Mighty Mouse and wireless keyboard.. as well as a 1TB external Mybook from Western digital. Setup was easy and I haven't rebooted the machine once (except due to system update).. The Mac Mini community makes an excellent product even better!.. Defiantly worth buying!

    Great do-it-all computer!

I bought this computer while I get save up some money to get a better computer but what I found out is that this computer does everything I want from a computer. Well, not at the highest settings but still does its job. I ought a 27in LED monitor and it's truly breathtaking (although can't play BlueRay). Another catch, is that sometimes that I'm having people over, I bring it over to the living room and hook it up to my 50in and hometheater, and the party starts. With this regard, I found that this computer has digital optical audio output in the same place where the regular 3.55mm output, just gotta do your homework and find out what "special" cable you need to buy so you get surround sound out of your mini! Great work again Apple!

    I finally switched

    Posted .

This is my second Apple computer, the first was an Apple II+, I'm happy I finally came back. I had some issues hooking the Mini into my network but a call to tech support fixed it in less than an hour. I had to call back for another network glitch and that was resolved in less than 10 minutes, including the wait time! I've taken three of the Apple Store FREE seminars to learn how to make the most out of all the feature this Mini offers.

    A nice upgrade choice

    Posted .

Living in a generally mac-centric household, it only makes sense to have a mac mini when the other desktop components are already present and the older mac was getting long in the tooth. It is not a gaming powerhouse, but that's not its purpose. It is a really friendly and easy to use media hub with the ability to run Adobe Creative Suite (reasonably well out of box, even better with a reasonably priced 8gb ram upgrade). It uses minimal power (the LCD monitor uses more), makes no appreciable noise, and takes up so little space! I know there are faster, more powerful systems even at this price point, but none of them fit in this form factor and integrate with such ease.

I hooked up the new Mac Mini on my 55" Samsung LED. Perfect! Just Perfect. Installed PLEX Home Media Center on it and Boxee. I can browse the internet and watch Netflix on the big screen. Even chatting with SKYPE is a lot of fun if you see your loved once on a 55" LED. We love the new Mac Mini and all his features!

Perfect for Watching On-Line Videos on LCD TV

    Posted .

I connected the mini to my 46" Samsung LCD TV with an HDMI cable. I watch full length video from ABC, FOX and CBS along with a handful of others. It works perfectly and handles the video load even if I run two windows at the same time. I canceled my expensive cable TV service. Using the bluetooth keyboard and magic mouse I can browse anything or do anything I would on the laptop using the large, crystal clear display.

Great For A Home Media Center

    Posted .

This is the best machine yet to use as a home media center. Plugs right inti the TV with the HDMI port and off you go. The Apple Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse work great from across the living room. This unit only uses one watt of power when it is sleeping, so it's one of the greenest machines I have ever seen. Apple has once again designed a winner.

    Too easy

I combined the new mini with the 27 inch Samsung monitor, wireless Trakpad and keyboard and it is rocking. Don't use HDMI to HDMI with the monitor, use an adaptor to DVI and it is clear as can be. I went with the MiniDisplay to DVI adaptor over the HDMI to DVI because it seemed to be clearer with my set up.
