Problems with software upgrade

However when we upgraded the required operating system software, the computer stopped working. Since it was new, we returned the computer and bought a new one. When we upgraded the software, we ran into a same issue. Then we went to the Apple store and got it fixed. I wonder what the issue would have been had it not been a new computer.
