Best MacBook I have ever owned

    Posted

Where do I start with this review. I have been a Mac user since 1986 when I bought a used Mac (84). I have been a user of Mac and Windows every since. I am an MCP and I own a computer company that does IT work for local businesses in my area. I have about 30 years of IT management experience so I like to at least think that I know about what I am talking about. :) Now, here is the reality of this machine. This is the best laptop I have ever owned, Mac, or PC, ever, PERIOD. It isn't even close. Yes, there are windows laptops that are less expensive. Yes, they have more power, yes they may have more ports, yes they may have 4k screens. To me, it doesn't matter. The ecosystem that Apple has built with the way their products work together, along with the style, power, and battery life of these machines makes them the ones to beat. Now the keyboard may look the same, but it really does feel different, and it is quieter. I don't know if it is going to hold up the test of time, but I am praying it does. I have AppleCare just in case. I would encourage everyone to get AppleCare as replacing the keyboard out of warranty will se you back about $400. People say that the Touch Bar is a gimmick, but I actually find it useful in some apps. I cannot say how nice it is to have a 16:10 format screen still in 2018, but it is. The machine is silent unless under load, and runs cool unless very stressed. If you are a Adobe Premier user, then I would buy a Windows machine, but if you are a Final Cut user, or may be, then this is the machine for you to edit with. It is crazy fast thanks to the optimization of FCP and the speed of the SSD. 3GB a second speeds on the SSD is just disgusting. Really disgusting. I still think the trackpad is oversized for no logical reason (wish I could use an Apple Pencil with it) and I am ready for Mojave other than that this machine is perfect to me. Again to ME. I don't care about having to use dongles. I don't mind the 720p camera, so to me this is just the best laptop on the market today. What would make it perfect? A little more keyboard travel. An Nvidia card instead of the AMD. 1080P Webcamera. An SD card reader built in. Light up the Apple logo again.

This laptop is replacing 2012 13 inch Retina display MacBook Pro which is going great after being used 8 plus hours daily, had to replace battery last year. Everything is great about this laptop except the price, it is too high in my opinion, it should have least 1 tb drive at this price point. This is apple theme lately to provide less then premium content at premium price. Once one pass this price shock, things are better. Screen is good keyboard is better than last year model, daughter has 2017 13 inch mbp. Time will tell how long it will last. Setting up is done by importing Everything from backup, this is best thing I like about Mac OS X, absolutely no time wasted. every app, shortcut in place. In new machine. This is work laptop so any time not spent is time gain. I keep laptop for very long time, even though Apple MacBook Pro are super expensive in long term it is cheaper, with no extra money needed to buy other softwares It will be used mainly office suite and web based application so extra power of graphic card may be over kill. Even with multiple apps open free memory is around 10 GB Which is great. Touch Bar and Touch ID is plus, nice to have feature. I used to buy at apple store, I have stopped buying at apple store now because Best Buy is best place to buy apple products, the prices are always better and quality service. Save yourself money by buying apple product at Best Buy. In last three years I have updated most of my Macs all purchased at Best Buy.

I am admittedly a tech snob. To me the best technology is like fashion is to fashionistas.....it's important not only how it performs, but how it looks. I tried to compromise on my next system upgrade and bought the Dell XPS-15 9570 with the 4k touch screen and 8th generation 6 core processor because it was $700 cheaper. But then I got a smoking deal using price match and bought the MacBook Pro 15 (which is what I really wanted from the start). I performed side by side comparisons, boot speed, program launches, responsiveness of system, touchpad, etc. All the elements that I exercise on a daily basis in using my laptop. I even made a spreadsheet comparing the different metrics that were important to me. And in the end, the MacBook won hands down. It wasn't even close. Take that, combined with the sleek sexy feel and look (yes, sexy....I told you I was a Tech Snob) of the Pro, toss in this will be my work companion for the next 6-7 years......Well, needless to say I returned the Dell. Not that it was a bad machine, just wasn't the one I wanted to take to the Prom. I could talk about how software is not optimized for 4K displays, and blurry letters from programs, finger smudges on the touchscreen.....but in the end it was beauty + power + performance = MacBook Pro. I still smile every time I pull it out of my bag and use it. As the commercial says.....smile & joy......Priceless. To me, it's worth the extra cost.

    Excellent Upgrade & Mini Review

The new MacBook Pro 15 has been upgraded to the new 8th generation 6 core processor and you can really feel the power now. The GPU also got a small spec bump up to the AMD 560X. I have the Core i7 -512GB / 16GB RAM model, but you can get up to Core i9 - 4TB and 32GB. The keyboard feels slightly better with a little more spring and it is not as loud and and clicky as last years model. There is a small membrane under the keys that should eliminate the keys having issues. The speakers are now louder and fuller then last years model. The battery is also a little bit bigger to compensate for the higher processing power. You can now talk to Siri but just talking with a new chip that is being used. The SSD is also faster. Overall this is a great upgrade and worth the money coming from the 2016 model. Only if you need the higher processing power would I upgrade from the 2017. Hope this helped. If it did please hit that thumbs up and also check out my YT channel for videos on this model. CoachCWC

Have had MacBooks since switching over from PC around 2004. Yes, PC has gotten way better since, but Mac's security, intuitive nature and the fact that the computer isn't seemingly hijacked by Microsoft for an update every month, helped. Also, that my 2009 17inch MacBook Pro ran like a perfect Nasa mission for 10 years was an eye-opening plus. That, as multiple friends and family members went through 2-3 PC notebooks each during the same timeframe. That all being said, Apple certainly had its issues too with keyboards specifically on MacBooks, also shady phone battery clocking and other sad issues that always crop up when the greed of Wall Street forces companies to punish consumers in the name of profit and shareholders. Anyway, I digress, this machine has to my view, totally overcome the bumps and bruises of some of the recent MacBooks. The data migration was a snap and the machine runs fabulously. Graphics are super fast, processor is lighting quick and for those that complain about the new USB setup, whatever. A simple adapter doesn't even slow me down. In short, the flatter keyboard took a little getting used to, but I like it now and the machine, after the first month, has met or exceeded my expectations. I'm a film and TV professional that outs a lot of pressure on a notebook and this machine can handle everything I've thrown at it.

6 Cores, plus hyper threading for 12 cores total, 512GB hard drive, i7 processor, good graphics.. Plus it's apple.. This MacBook Pro replaces the last one I purchased 6 years ago that is still in decent condition but definitely needs a bit of work done to it.. When I purchased this, it was on sale so it was a great bargain. The Touch Bar, while I thought t was going to be semi lame, actually works really well and for some apps, very convenient. I don't think I need to go into much about how great this device is. My environment is within the Apple eco system. iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, Apple Watch 1, Apple Watch 3 and my MacBook with a couple of Beats headsets and such. Everything just works seamlessly between all of my devices. One of the cool features I like with this version of the MacBook that I didn't have with my other one is the ability for the Mac to unlock by my Apple Watch being in close proximity.. Definitely nice to sit down and not have to worry about entering my password.. Looking forward to another 6 years.. If you purchase one of these, purchase the apple care warranty... if you ever have to use it, you'll be glad you did.

This was my first MacBook ever. I was very sick of buying Windows laptops that ran like garbage a year after buying them and taking forever to process EVERYTHING! I mostly bought this for movie rendering which almost made me fall off of my chair the first time I rendered a movie that would normally take me 10 hours in 4 minutes........ What a beast this thing is. I love the boot camp feature so I can boot Windows OS from an external SDD and still run my expensive Windows programs without re-buying them. And they all run better than they ever did on a Windows PC . Yes I had to buy an adapter so I could have an HDMI, USB ports, and SD slots but it was only $100 which isn't horrible. I love the airdrop feature from my ipad and iphone, love that I can unlock my Macbook by just wearing my Apple watch and many many other features that are awesome. It was a breeze to move from Windows to Mac OS........no issues learning it at all. The only thing I can say I do miss with the this Macbook is a ten key as part of the keyboard. I do a lot of financial stuff and a ten key does come in handy, but not a deal breaker. Oh and the screen is AMAZING. So clear and clean it's almost 3D.

The hype about the skinny F-bar screen issues scared me from being an early buyer when this class came out. I waited it out and pulled the trigger. No problems whatsoever. I've been using employer-bought MacBook Pros for 10+ years, but this is the first one I purchased with my own money. In addition to being a heavy Adobe Creative Suite user, I'm also one of those people who leaves a million browser windows opens. Trust me, I know how tax a laptop's day-to-day memory and workload. This laptop is doing just fine after several months of usage. (Barring the expected constant mismatch of OS updates that make Avid's ProTools incompatible... I've learned to just update the OS as late as possible in order to be able to continue using Pro Tools... that's an Avid thing, not Apple's problem). My only knock is something that was negated by my purchase of a j5create docking station -- Apple's getting rid of all the USB jacks on this laptop is a pain, but we all know that Apple tends to be the leader in forcing the new, next jacks that the world needs. (Ask Blackberry how well servicing people's habits works out as a business plan). Just get a docking station for all your dongle/jack needs and you'll have no qualms with this Mac.

I'm a MAC user! This is my third Mac and my second MacBook Pro. Last one was an early 2011 and it finally gave up. Apple is expensive but I like the product so decided to stay with what I'm familiar with. I purchased it at BestBuy. They had the best price at the time and I had been in to talk to different associates several times. I liked the info (knowledge) I received and the service. The new Mac has the touch bar, wasn't to sure about it but now I really like it and prefer it over the old style touch pad. I like having the ability to use my fingerprint to log on. The computer is fast with the new i7 processor and the 16 mb of RAM. I'm able to use multiple apps including two video apps at the same time. The difference in speed and performance helps make it well worth it. I like the new SSD drive over the old hard drives. Apple changed the charging cable and removed the USB and SD card slots. Not sure why so I had purchase the Ultra Drive Doc to over come this issue, so it's an additional cost. However, I really like the new Mac and hopefully it should last me a long time, longer than my last MacBook Pro.

Long story short; this is my favorite electronic purchase thus far! My last apple computer was the MacBook Air 2015/16 & to think I was beyond content using that!!!!! The second the screen turns on on this MacBook Pro it’s like a new world! The graphics are INSANE. Lighting has various settings to please the specific eye! I am a photographer/videographer & this MacBook has MORE than enough room & “engine” power for professional material that’ll last well over 10 years! This is a true, life bettering investment that has so many beneficial aspects you literally find something new each day! (That is, unless you read the handidandi booklet it came with) Absolutely LOVE the touchscreen tool bar, and I’ve gotta be honest cus I absolutely DESPISE touchscreen computers, but this new feature is definitely an asset & definitely ADDS to the experience without it being cliche or “cheap” . Lol It’s a true masterpiece!

I bought a new MBP15 recently when my 2014 MPB-13 Retina had to go in for service and I couldn't be without a computer for a week. The video rendering speed is awesome: I can regularly render multiple videos SIMULTANEOUSLY at faster speeds than I could export a single video before. The multi-core advantage is massive if you use Premiere, Photoshop, and other apps that take advantage of it. This machine also runs cooler than my 13" because that machine had only one fan! I've had no significant heat problems and have detected no throttling. WARNING: after using this, you will be incredibly annoyed with other computers you touch— this is so fast, apps launch so quickly, files write at blistering speeds— even external SSDs can start to feel slow!!

I purchased a Windows computer over a year ago to replace my MacBook Air. I just needed more room and power and didn't want to spend the $$ on anew MacBook Pro. After struggling with a Windows computer for a year, I decided that I had had enough and went to BestBuy and purchased a new MacBook Pro. Working with a Mac again was like putting on your favorite relaxing sweat pants... very comfortable and familiar. Even though I was able to move around the Windows environment in an "OK" manner after a couple of months, NOTHING compares to a Mac experience. It is so intuitive and easy. Yes a Mac does have its quirks, (expensive, upgrades limited) but the Mac OS is so much easier to navigate than the Windows world. Also, if you are invested in the Apple Universe, with a little patients, all of your Apple devices can connect together which helps organize your life. If you need a computer that is dependable and JUST WORKS, I would recommend a Mac.

Coming purely from Windows products for nearly fifteen years (never thought it would ever come to this), the switch isn't as hard as I feared it would be. This particular model (MBP 15", i7, 512 SSD, 16GB RAM) is pretty powerful for what I needed it for. I've picked up Photography as a hobby, but soon realized I wanted to do more with it. Comes the decision to purchase my very first Apple laptop. I'm not saying Windows PC couldn't handle what I wanted to do, but after all of my research, I kept landing on MBP, not only for portability, but also for functionality. For the longest time I always worry that switching to a different OS was going to be a pain, but in reality, there's not much to it. It does take getting used to, but I really don't find it a whole world of difficult. I do wish that the laptop was a little lighter, because I did not expect it to be quite heavy just by looking at it.

This is an excellent laptop. I replaced my iMac with this computer, and I'm glad I did. The screen size is perfect. Large enough to use as a desktop but still small enough to travel with it. The screen has great brightness and colors, and I love the natural light shifting it does to mach the surroundings. It does this without you noticing, and I only noticed how well it works when I turned off the feature to compare. Speed is amazing, it never hesitates to do anything. I don't game, but I have complete faith that this would run most games well. The keyboard does take some getting used to, and there are complaints out there about it, but I don't mind it. The Touch Bar is a little gimmicky, it's neat looking, but I can't find a good use for it other that it's just there. I love the computer over all, I'm very glad I bought it.

My late 2011 MacBook Pro's graphics card died for the 2nd time and decided it was better to put that repair money into a new MacBook Pro. Lucky for me it was on sale for $2400($400 off list price). It has a 500 GB solid state drive. For the price it should have more GB. Has 16 GB of memory and it can't be upgraded to anything larger. Mac's have always be easier to use and understand than Windows laptops, so I do have to pay the higher price of a Mac. It has 4 "3.1 USB" ports and 1 is used for the power cord. The power cord is not like the older ones with the magnetic attachment that will detach without damaging the cord or computer. If you accidentally pull the cord, it will not come off and might pull the laptop off the table or damage the power cord. :-( It is a much lighter laptop and the sound it puts out is quite surprisingly good.

I use MBP (2015) for my work, so initially I bought Dell XPS 9750 for the home laptop. That was a terrible experience and I had to replace (within dell i got 4 replacement all had blue screen when i ran dev IDE like VisualStudio / Android Studio) so here I am back with the trusted MBP(2018) Dev User - As a programmer all the challenges what I had with Dell has been completely handled and it just gave me a peace of mind The android simulators run without much of issue. Style & Use Very light weight compared to 2015 MBP and the keys are bit different and it takes time to adjust to the new keyboard layout. The trackpad area is very huge and sometimes it causes inconvenience. I have now left with too many adaptors and most of my old accessories have become obsolete. All vendors has to adopt a common standard. Price point - its expensive as compared to Dell but I believe my pain points what I had with Dell has been addressed.

MacBooks in my experience, have been work horses, albeit expensive ones. I upgraded to a 2018, from my 2012 MBP. Build quality is standard Apple fantastic, as it should considering the money you’ll be plunking down for the privilege. The 2018 brings some much needed upgrades to the CPU, memory, and storage. With the upgraded SSD, I/O speeds are impressively fast. All that combined with the i7 or i9 (depending on how much cash you’re willling to drop), you’ll see some pretty fast processing/rendering speeds. Those who are heavy into media, photography, video editing/YouTube, there should be a noticeable speed output increase. If all you are doing is surfing the internet and checking mail, then you should consider saving your money and find a more cost effective solution.

This is the first time buying an Apple Computer product. So far, so good. Having a few issues with getting used to using a Mac instead of a PC, but that isn't Apples fault. Once I took a free class from the Apple store, navigating my MacBook became easier. Will be going back for more guidance at the Apple store to get more instruction, hints and tips. The people at the Apple store have been great. Sales people at Best Buy were willing to help and answer questions too, but I don't feel comfortable about taking up their time when there are customers waiting. As far as performance goes, so far I haven't encountered any problems. I maybe not the right person to be reviewing performance since I haven't ever owned a Mac before. But no complaints so far.

I have been using Macs for 32 years, primarily for graphics and programming, as well as downtime entertainment. While they have their ups and downs, in the long run they just keep getting better. I use and manage Mac, Windows and Linux systems. They all work well, but Mac is the only one that makes me go “Ahhhh”. The MacBook Pro is svelte and easy to use. It is very light compared to previous versions and other laptops. The monitor is incredibly sharp. I use it with a dock at home along with an Apple Cinema Display which gives me decent screen real estate. The only real pain is that it is limited to USB C (Thunderbolt 3) connections. Then again, it was a pain when they dropped the floppy drive and SCSI, but we got over that like we’ll get over this. I say, go get one for yourself.

I am more interested in followup support with Apple and would probably drive to Short Pump for the expertise. I am amazed that I haven't gone apple before. IBM is complicated about everything. Apple is drop down menus, point-drag-drop, its amazing. There are a few things I haven't figures out yet but I will I need some more time with apple support who are absolute dolls. I can't believe my good fortune OMG why did I wait so long? I was scared of the change in technology .
