    Great with a Small Asterisk

I converted back to Macs in 2001 and have been pleased ever since. I won't say that they're a perfect product or ideal for everyone, but for elegant design, stable operation, and ease of use, they can't be beat. I picked up a 15" 2.4 GHz MacBook Pro to replace my reliable, but aging, 12" Powerbook G4. I really love that computer but wanted something more powerful for photo/video editing and some light gaming. The prospect of being able to run Windows when absolutely necessary (with the advent of Intel processors) sealed the deal. I considered the lower-level MacBook as well, but the integrated graphics (rather than a dedicated video card) was a deal-breaker for me. Here are some of my impressions after a couple months' worth of use: PROS: 1) The new LED display is very sharp and much brighter than my old PowerBook, which itself is pretty darn good. 2) Performance is just fantastic. The switch to Intel processors was a great move, IMHO. I use my laptop to convert video files from DVD and other sources for my iPod and the like. My old PB G4 (1 GHz) took as long as five or six hours to convert a standard DVD movie to MP4 or H.264 format; the MacBook Pro does the same job in less than forty minutes. Graphics performance is similarly excellent. 3) The iLife '08 suite integrates very nicely. I primarily use iPhoto and just dabble with the others, but all of them are very intuitive and user-friendly. Same goes for iTunes. 4) Setting up Boot Camp to create a Windows partition is a snap. HOWEVER, I encountered a problem serious enough that it fried my hard drive. See CONS below. 5) The lighted keyboard is great; it and the display automatically dim or brighten depending on ambient light. The keys have a very similar feel to my PowerBook, but I have noticed that I prefer the old keyboard ever so slightly as it has a higher-quality feel, at least to me. 6) Lots of connections. FireWire 800 is a great feature. I like having the ExpressCard slot as well, though I have not yet needed it. Just nice to have some flexibility there. 7) Superior operating system. I won't go into reviewing Mac OS X "Leopard" here, but it just blows away Windows for ease of use, stability, interface, and almost everything else. 8) Built-in Bluetooth and wireless network capabilities. Very easy to set them up, too. 9) Slim, sleek design. Most computers are dull, uninspired hunks of black plastic. Some people could care less; others appreciate a little visual flair. I just think Macs are the nicest-looking computers out there. YMMV. CONS 1) Hard drive failure upon installing Windows XP in Boot Camp partition. I attempted to install XP after creating a separate partition for it, and the hard drive completely failed. The Apple techs could not tell my why this happened, but very quickly replaced it under warranty. I don't know what happened there but will be watching this very closely over the next few months. (I don't know if this is coincidence or just bad luck, but I also had a Western Digital passport external drive go bad with this laptop. Time will tell on this point, but I'm being extra careful to back up my data.) 2) Still some bugs in the OS. I seem to get more random program shutdowns and various little weird things going on than with any previous version of OS X. I've heard this complaint from other Mac users as well, so I don't think it's just me. Still lots better than Windows, but somewhat atypical for Apple. That said, Apple is usually pretty responsive when it comes to software updates. 3) USB is not implemented very well, especially compared to FireWire. Data transfer rates over USB 2.0 are nowhere near what they could (and should) be. I realize Apple developed FW and that it offers some very real advantages over USB, but the vast majority of external drives available are USB only, so hamstringing this connection is a disappointment. Also, it is much more difficult to make a bootable drive off of USB. It can be done, but Apple wants you to use FW. 4) Overall build quality seems a notch below that of my older PowerBook. Sure, it's a bit thinner, but my new MBP also flexes and creaks a little more (maybe because there's more flat surface area?) My 12" PB is built seemingly out of one chunk of metal and feels more substantial. This difference is only incremental, and maybe a first-time Mac user wouldn't notice. If the PB rated a 10 for build quality, my MBP gets a 9. 5) Not easy to upgrade the hard drive. The standard MacBook has a user-replaceable hard drive that's easy to access. The Pro's is most definitely NOT easy to get at, and Apple doesn't want you touching it or they'll void your warranty. 6) It's expensive. Maybe not on a comparative level considering its specs and performance over a similar PC laptop, but no matter how you slice it, a MacBook Pro ain't cheap. And on a related note, you have to pay a hefty ransom to get Apple's full three-year AppleCare warranty. Otherwise, you only get 90 days of phone support and a year of hardware coverage. For what you pay for a Mac (especially a Pro), Apple should do better. So, would I recommend one to my mother or my best friend? Absolutely. There is no such thing as a perfect computer (no, not even Macs), but overall I have been extremely pleased with my MacBook Pro. If you're not going to be doing a lot of graphics work or gaming, though, I would definitely recommend taking a look at the cheaper MacBooks. You can save yourself a bundle of money if you don't need the extra screen size or a high-powered graphics card.

No more PC's for me... ever!

Well just a little background info: Im a student and I use this computer mainly for school work (obviously) and when im bored, but mostly for school. This laptop travels really well and works great if you need some serious power on the road.I just bought my new MBP in early January as a Christmas present to myself :) Anyways, I had a Gateway before this and it was an ok computer. It was slowing down and got bogged down with viruses and spyware stuff (yes, I did have Norton and all that other stuff but it runs in the background anyways and slows your computer down even more). After about a months worth of research I decided on a MacBook Pro, and I can honestly say that I will never use a PC again. I've had a few friends who bought new Gateways and Acer laptops for school with windows vista and honestly it just gets annoying. Its always asking you "are you sure you want to do this" blah blah blah. Finally, my girlfriend bought a MacBook for school and I played with it for about 10 minutes and I was hooked. Easiest OS to use, hands down. I've been a PC user all my life and I had absolutely no trouble getting used to this computer. Now onto the virus/spyware aspect: what viruses? what spyware? Sounds like the commercial yes, but its true. I have NO anti-anything software on this computer at all and I've been surfing the internet on this machine for almost 2 months now, no problems, period. The iLife 08 suite is amazing, everything from iChat to Garageband, it all works seamlessly together to give you one simple computing experience. Now, if you dont need the extra power of a MacBook Pro, get the regular MacBook or the ultra-thin MacBook Air. Either way, switching to a Mac will be the best decision you've ever made (with regards to computers that is) Thanks for reading!

great laptop with TONS of power and features

This is a true powerhouse among laptops. I love the fact that the mac doesn't get viruses and spyware, and is very stable. The apple has got great software for photo and video editing right out of the box. They get around 3.5 hours of battery life and can do everything that a PC can and then some. Office for Mac is also available, so you can create and edit Word, Excel, and Powerpoint documents and move them between PCs and Macs without issue. Perhaps the biggest surprise is that you can now run Windows on a Mac now! So you get the best of both worlds with a macbook w/ bootcamp. It actually runs a lot faster on the mac than it does on most PCs, and any software that will not work with Mac OS X, can be used on the windows side, just make sure you get some virus/spyware software.

I bought the 15.4 MacBook Pro about 6 months ago. Right now i have the 2.33 Ghz, 2Gig Ram, 120Gig HDD comp. This is such a great multi-tasking comp, it almost just replaces your desktop. The OS itself is fairly easy to use. As a windows user myself, it took me a couple of days to figure things out. It doesnt have that high of a learning curve but once you get use to the Apple OS system, you will find it such a breeze to work with. The OS is so great to improve productivity and workflow. This computer has the power to do lots of work. I run Logic 8 Express for music and other fairly highly intensive programs and they work pretty good. Really, this is worth every single penny Apple wants you to drop down. You wont regret it. Oh, and dont forget to put bestbuys insurance plan, well worth the money for any accidents on this pony.

I bought this computer for my daughter as she is a film production major in college. She edits her videos with ease on this laptop as well as the normal word processing functionality needed for college. Produces beautiful videos and all of the programs work in beautiful concert with one another. No worries of virus/spyware/adware....it's just an excellent computer with the following 2 exceptions: Laptop gets extremely hot and it's best that you don't use this laptop on your LAP! Would also recommend a laptop stand that helps the air to circulate under the laptop to help keep it cooler. We had to have the battery charger cord replaced as it frayed and was shocking my daughter! Replacement cords are $80. I expect better quality for the money. Still, I would recommend this laptop....Daughter is a diehard MAC user!!!

This was my switch from the PC world to the Mac world and I am never looking back. Everything I use a computer for I would rather do on my 15" MacBook Pro. The Apple experience is uparalled, right out of the box you can do so much, and the user experience is awesome. Everything has a refined, polished, and smooth feel too it, it is all great from the excellent screen to the mag-safe connector. You will find little details that make you wonder why PC's still operate the way they do. For the novice who is just learning computers, to the power user who wants to drop in the terminal and use darwin ports to make their mac the best *nix box ever, there is something here for everyone.

    Ready, Set, Switch...to Apple

This is a terrific computer. Hands down, Apple is doing a better job than anyone in customer service and just providing a superior product. That said, it takes some habit-breaking to lose the PC addiction. There are still must-have software applications that don't yet have Mac versions. There are a zillion time-saving tricks that you have to learn from scratch because they aren't intuitive to a PC convert. Take a class if you must to maximize your Mac savvy. It's worth it. Also, get the case customized in a different color. Now that you're breaking the PC mold, why not make a statement of your independence of thought?

    The "Best Buy"

I am very happy with my Apple MacBook Pro. As a former PC user, I was hesitant to switch over, but with programs such as Boot Camp or Parallels, the transition was made easier. Now, I no longer am running MS as a crutch, but as a tool when needed. The display on the MacBook Pro is beautiful and bright. The keyboard is also beautifully lit. Power-wise, this MacBook Pro can run any program and it's speed tops my PC desktop easily. The software available for the OS is also a great plus. This laptop was definitely a "Best Buy" as I can use it on the train, at work, and home, for all purposes, whether it be work or play!

The Mac Book Pro is ideal for any individual who is seeking the best laptop for work and home use. Especially, if you are interested in photography, audio editing or video editing as a living or a hobby this is a must have product. If not interested in the above, it is fast, slim, portable, built-in wireless internet connection and worth the money. Furthermore, the Mac Book Pro is user frendly, less prone to viruses and other problems that many individuals experience in PC computers. After owning this computer for six months and several years with the desktop MAC's, I will never go back to a PC.

Ok I'm a High School IT graduate and this is my first "real" laptop purchase after suffering through a painful Vista/Vaio combo... Simply put, no spyware, no viruses, so easy your great-grandmother can use it, WIDGETS such as weather, calculator, stocks ticker, etc. don't clutter your screen, etc. It's Apple's time to take back some of that market share, so jump in the good vibe while they're still made with quality parts, look GREAT and haven't gotten cheap enough to feel like an HP!!!

everything works fine! It comes with nothing unnecessary like PC's do. You just put the operating cd-rom in and you're set. It's fast and efficient. I love the feature where you have to type in a password in order to change certain preferences that you don't want anyone else touching. Only problem is that it get's a little hot. For that problem, I just downloaded smcFanControl and now I can just adjust the fan speeds accordingly! I love Apple!

    First Mac - I'm converted

    Posted

After developing a great fondness for the Mac commercials, I investigated the pros and cons of purchasing a Mac rather than a PC. The more I researched my purchase the more convinced I became that "going Mac" was the best decision for me. I haven't looked back. I love my MacBook Pro and have come to resent the time spent on my PC desktop at work. I have been thoroughly converted and plan to purchase a Mac desktop for my kids' use at home.

Everytime I use my macbook pro Im all smiles. Only problem is that everytime you leave it at home or in your car you think someone is going to steal it so when you dont have it with you it kind of ruins your day. I mainly bought mine to record and make music with and it has been great. Batterly life is kind of short but they have an update for that. All in all, its a great purchase.

I am a film/audio student and I recently purchased my first mac, a MacBook Pro. I run several huge programs on the laptop all it once and have never had a problem. Fast and reliable machine. Worth every penny. I would highly recommend this to anyone. If you don't need the power and just want a reliable laptop then a MacBook also makes a great choice.

One of the best Notebook computers on the market. Comes with Apple's standard warranty that is upgradeable to 3 years of Apple Care. Has the new Leopard OS installed which is the easiest OS to use or learn. Is not prone to virus or spyware. Easily restore the OS to factory original or just repair it if it should become corrupt due to user neglect.

This is my third mac laptop in 6 years, and it is a real treat. Of all the great products Apple has been producing, the best decision was transitioning to Intel chips. This machine runs incredibly fast. I run Windows in Bootcamp for work apps, and live in the Mac OSX environment for everything else.
