I didn’t realize after one charge to the phone the battery itself would need to be charged again as well. It does not fully charge the phone. It stops at about 90%.

It will not recharge it to 100%. Think of it as an emergency top-off. I like that if uses a the same lightning cable and that I can plug the lightning cable to the phone or the battery and both will charge.
