iPad Pro 10.5" Smart Keyboard vs. Logitech K811

    Posted
    TomD

10.5 inch IPad Pro Keyboards. Logitech K811 vs. the Apple 10.5 inch Smart Keyboard. Testing the Logitech K811. The Logitech keyboard works great but it is a separate unit from the iPad. It is larger in size, i.e. wider and longer than the 10.5 inch iPad which means a larger keyboard surface than the Smart Keyboard. The Logitech lays flat but you can prop it up with a book if you want the keyboard at an angle for typing. The Logitech requires recharging from time to time but the cable is small and it goes a long time on a charge. Carrying cases are available to make it easy for travel. While many of the command keys work, i.e. copy, cut, paste cmd-z, volume keys, etc., the function keys are limited. The primary function of the Logitech K811 would be a portable external touch type keyboard with more real estate than the Smart Keyboard for extended text projects rather than hunt and peck the iPad screen keyboard. If you don't mind carrying a separate unit or want a larger keyboard, the K811 is hard to beat. Testing Apple Smart Keyboard. The Apple Smart Keyboard is smaller and thinner than the Logitech K811 and attaches to the iPad Pro, so the Smart Keyboard would be easier to carry. Yes, the combination iPad and Keyboard case is a bit heavier than the iPad with a Smart Cover; the inconvenience of having the keyboard handy. Otherwise, everything about it seems to work just great. The Smart Keyboard doesn't have the function keys, but I knew that from the earlier reviews. There are options using the CMD and Option keys. I found the keyboard large enough for general typing and comfortable for my fingers. For running out to a meeting and lite travel that does't require a lot of keyboard typing the 10.5 inch iPad Pro Smart Keyboard is handy, convenient, functional and small enough to pack away. SUMMARY: Both the Logitech K811 and 10.5 inch iPad Pro Smart Keyboard are excellent options and both work well. For sheer portability and quick on-the-go access the Smart Keyboard is the winner; albeit heavier to carry than the iPad using only the Smart Cover. For typing the Logitech is a bit larger and more comfortable if you are going to be in one place, like a hotel room, but you will be packing the Logitech Keyboard in your checked luggage. Both are easier than finger typing on the screen keyboard and if you use your iPad Pro for work you will want to carry one or the other with you when away from your office or home office.

There are a lot of options out there for Bluetooth keyboards for iPads. I’ve tried out a lot of them and they just don’t seem to work as well as I would like them to. When I got the Smart Keyboard for the iPad Pro, I wasn’t sure it would be worth the investment since it’s a bit pricier than other keyboards in the market. I’m glad that I was wrong. The Smart Keyboard is great for many reasons. First, it charges directly from its connection to the iPad Pro. This in itself is an amazing feature because I can plug the iPad in to charge and the keyboard gets charged, too. Second, the keys are butterfly keys, which means you make a stronger connection with a lighter tap and your fingers can actually travel faster than they can with other keyboards. I noticed this quite a bit when I switched from a 2014 MacBook Pro to the Smart Keyboard. I immediately thought that I was getting my work done faster and as it turns out, I was. Third, it doubles as a screen cover and stand for the iPad Pro. Even though there are other keyboard options out there, I don’t think any are as suited as the Smart Keyboard is for the iPad Pro.

To start, I will say that I had to return my first keyboard and exchange for another to get a good one. The first one had a small manufacturing defect where when using on a flat surface, the bottom of the keyboard (part nearest you) would pop up about 1/4” making it so you have to hold the keyboard down with one hand. After a quick search it sounds like quite a few people got keyboards like this and simply exchanged for a good one, which is exactly what I did. Best Buy was happy to give me a replacement. All of that being said, now that I have one that lays flat as designed, it is amazing. Very thin when folded up, it can fold into all of the positions as the regular smart cover, and also has a keyboard with a nice feel. Keys are properly spaced to prevent typing errors. There are no shortcut keys, however Apple has built in a ton of shortcuts using the command key combined with other keys. Also note, this does NOT have protection for the back of the iPad. The keyboard cover and smart cover are designed to only cover the front of the device. If you want rear coverage you can use the Apple silicone case in conjunction with the Smart Cover or Smart Keyboard Cover. Overall, this is a great product and you get what you pay for. Good quality, good feel, lightweight. The super thin profile is one of the big pluses to me. If you don’t care about extra heft, the logi keyboard case is pretty solid. All around protection and a nice backlit keyboard. It is unfortunate that Apples manufacturing process on this keyboard isn’t perfect, but even though it may take two tries to get a good one, when you get it its just perfect.

I purchased a new iPad Pro 10.5", Apple Pencil, and Smart Keyboard at the same time in September 2017. The keyboard was starting to work intermittently over the last week or so, but now as of 04-23-19 it has completely failed. The biggest wear areas, on the keyboard seem to be at the flexible hinge. The magnets that click the iPad and the keyboard together seem to be still working correctly. But the 3 pin connector seems to have become faulty. Over the years of use I noticed how easy metal chips would get stuck to the magnet connector causing gouging to it on the keyboard along with damage to the iPad itself. BTW all my keys seem to function with no trouble until today. I hope this helps someone but I have say for an Apple product I am very disappointed. I cringe at the fact there isn't a lot of great options out there for a keyboard for the iPad Pro 10.5 without issues and will have to purchase another one that will have issues in less than 2 years. So I ask what does this do for the environment? Can it be recycled?

Doesn't lie flat while typing or when collapsed.

I really wanted to like this keyboard cover, but it simply won't lie flat on a flat surface. This causes the iPad to rock and wobble forward and backward while typing. This is distracting. The cover also doesn't lie properly when folded as a cover. It seems the separation/spacing of the material along one edge is simply shorter than it should be (as it is shown in the profile shot on Apple's site). This seems to pinch the keys and results in a peak in the middle of the keyboard section. I'm not sure if this is a manufacturing defect in the first batch or if Apple will simply hope most people don't notice. This seems to contradict Apple's (Jony Ive's and Tim Cook's) obsession with industrial design and manufacturing tolerances. Personally, I preferred the leather Smart Case Apple made for the iPad 2. I'd love to see Apple make a leather keyboard case (not just a cover) for the iPad Pro 10.5. If they somehow managed to incorporate a backlight then they could name their price and take my money! As far as this product goes, though, I simply expect much more for the price.

I bought my IPad Air (2019 version) to use as a portable / travel device to do Microsoft Office (outlook, word, PowerPoint, excel, etc) on. It does the job, but... 1) When it is folded behind the device it is a bit clunky to hold onto and use the device for reading. In fact, it kinda wants to fold not the back and will NOT stay flat on the unit. I find that more often lately I just pull the keyboard off of the IPad and use it without. 2). I had a Surface Pro 3 that I gave to my wife - and will admit I am a little spoiled on the cover the surface used. It had the magnet and folded flat. Actually, wish Apple would just copy it. 3). I know that the IPad does not have a mouse pointer, but I find that I want to use one when working on a keyboard. Slightly frustrating, but oh well. It works, but it is not the most comfortable, and looks a bit weird when covering the screen, with part of it folded on top of the device (product of the design). I don’t plan to swap it out and will use it (because it’s expensive, especially coming from apple).

I just upgrade my old iPad with the iPad pro 2017. My old iPad did not have the electrical contacts to connect the the Smart keyboard so I had purchased a third party bluetooth keyboard with a separate battery. This made it twice as heavy and had a slight lag when typing fast. So when I upgraded to the iPad pro the Smart keyboard was at the top of my list of features. The Smart keyboard is light since it uses the iPad pro battery and has a direct electrical connection so no more bluetooth typing lag. Smart keyboard layout has the same size layout as my normal PC keyboard, so it is much easier to type, but the keys do have less play, so I would recommend a lighter touch . If you what the 2019 iPad Air instead of the 2017 iPad pro then get this board. Both iPad are the same dimensions 10.5 inches and the Smart keyboard fits booth. Also, if you are getting a the Smart keyboard you then should consider getting a folio case that allows for the Smart keyboard connection. Some of the older iPad cases are don't have room to allow the the electrical connection.

I received my keyboard cover today and tested it on my iPad Pro. First thing I noticed was that it didn't lay flat. I had read and seen many reviews showing this challenge. I tried to see if I could adjust it some and got it to sit a bit better but it was slightly off the table. I will give it some time and see how it goes. This keyboard is much more difficult to use than my Surface Pro 4 keyboard. Not as nice an experience. If I had a lot of typing to do, I would use the Surface over this one. It seems limited to use on a desk or table and not your lap. During the first few hours of using this keyboard, the iPad froze up and I could not change screens and the touch function stopped working. I had to remove the keyboard and reboot the iPad to get it to work properly. That's when I stopped using the keyboard and went back to just using my iPad Pro as a tablet. I do love my iPad for media consumption - one of the best there is. However, this keyboard has yet to convince me that it is a necessary iPad accessory. The jury is still out. I will give it a week or so and then make the final judgment.

I saw mixed reviews before purchasing. However, I decided to take the leap, and give it a try. I've used other iPad keyboards, and I will admit, this is my favorite keyboard to date. In comparison to other keyboards, this is very compact and light. Now, it does add some extra weight to the entire IPad (which is to be expected), however, the extra functionality has been beyond appreciated. I'm finding that I am way more productive with having the keyboard always attached. In fact, I'm more inclined to leave my laptop behind, and just grab the iPad Pro with the keyboard. The key responsiveness is really great. No complaints. Others had mentioned that it doesn't alway lay completely flat. Somewhat true, sometime its pretty flat, other times it's not completely, however, I have not see this as a problem. It's nice and sturdy when I type on it. As others mentioned, it would be nice to have a few extra buttons to open and close apps, or adjust volume. That would be sure helpful. However, to keep in the small form factor, it works fine for me. I highly recommend.

For my older iPad Air 2, I owned a belkin keyboard case that I absolutely loved. It was compact, protected the back, the keys lighted up. Now when I upgraded to the 10.5 inch iPad pro, options were limited. I tried the Logitech Slim Combo keyboard case but it was poorly designed and so big and heavy that it made the iPad more bulky than a MacBook. That was promptly returned and I picked up the apple smart keyboard. On the plus side it's incredibly lightweight and thin. The keys have a nice give to them considering how thin it is. On the negative side there is no protection for the back of the iPad so you essentially have to pair this with an additional case for a full keyboard case usage. Considering it costs $159 by itself that adds significant expense to a $800 - $1000 tablet. I wish the keys lit up as well. But despite the expense I'll probably hold on to it as it really is great for travel (i found a very inexpensive back case to pair this with that also holds the apple pencil) and easy to use with the smart connector. If it was $99 it would be a five star home run.

My first impressions of this keyboard weren't that great. Very tiny and hard to use. It was a hassle to hook it up with the case I had purchased. It also didn't work when I first tested it. I finally got it to function but didn't like the hassle the case created. So I decided to order a silicone cover for the back of my iPad which allowed me to use the keyboard cover easily. The two worked together seamlessly. Given the new look and feel, I am thinking having the keyboard may not be that bad. I am giving this 4 stars because I can't select 3.5. It's a little better than expected but not really needed. The iPad Pro is a really nice tablet for drawing and media consumption. Until it gets the Mac OS, it will be a tablet and the keyboard is not a necessary option. I will continue to use my Mac Air for any lengthy typing.

I resisted the Apple Smart Keyboard with my previous iPad Pro, opting for standalone bluetooth keyboards instead. The Magic Keyboard or Logitech Keys-To-Go, for example, are both great choices if you generally use your iPad on a desk, and don't move around a lot. If you plan to swipe your iPad up and port it into meetings and other places, and want to carry it alone (without a bag), the Smart Keyboard really is the best option. This new folio model (for the 2018 iPads) is built with a solid, rigid back, which adds some bulk, but makes typing on your lap far easier than the Smart Keyboard Cover of iPads previous. The plasticy thunk of the keys takes a little getting used to, but I'm really happy with this (admittedly pricey) addition to the iPad Pro. The connector means never having to charge the keyboard, too.

I owned the 9.7” and 12.9” iPad Pro models, and had the respective keyboard covers. Neither of those felt comfortable typing on for anything beyond a quick email, text message, or Facebook reply. I’m impressed with the keyboard cover for the 10.5” iPad Pro. The material the cover is made out of is a slightly better feel, but what is the most important, is the vastly improved key feel when typing. The keys are easier to depress than on the previous models, and provide a satisfying feedback when depressed. I find I have used this new keyboard cover more in the few months I’ve owned it, than I did the others in an entire year of ownership. The 10.5” size, while not a truly fullsize keyboard, is very comfortable to use, unlike the 9.7” keyboard cover was. For those who have never used one of these products, I think you’ll enjoy it, and for those who have used a previous model, I think you’ll be delighted with the improvements Apple has made to this newer model.

Like many Apple branded accessories, this works flawlessly. It’s also a bit overpriced for what it is, but I happened to get an “open-box, excellent” one on here and saved about $25. I used this keyboard on my 9.7” iPad Pro, so I knew I needed it for my new 10.5” iPad Pro. For me, it paired easily and works like a charm. While it isn’t the same as typing on a traditional keyboard, I find it easy to use and don’t make any more mistakes typing than I do on a full sized keyboard. My biggest gripe is that apple changed the size of this new iPad JUST ENOUGH that I have to go buy brand new accessories for it. Considering what you already pay for an iPad, the cost of this is ridiculous, but I guess that’s what you get when you buy apple products. All in all, if you use the iPad to answer emails, write reviews like this, or anything that requires typing, this keyboard is a must have. I’ll continue to purchase them if I buy an iPad that the old size won’t work with.

I'm a writer. I love good keyboards. But I also travel a lot, and my iPad goes with me, so I needed the best solution. For Apple, that felt like Apple's own keyboard cover. I tried other covers and keyboards, mostly by Logitech, and while I liked those, they added too much bulk. (The exception was Logitech's Keys-to-Go keyboard, which is astounding, but not attached. Logitech should really make a Smart Cover replacement using that tech.) Now, the reason for the 4 stars is the keys' feel and quality. It's excellent, mind you, but a superior product is Microsoft's Surface Pro keyboard, which is what EVERY mobile keyboard should be, at least as far as the keys go: good travel, satisfying typing, and great spacing. Now, the Apple Keyboard has all these things, but still feels like a travel keyboard, whereas Microsoft's feels like a full-time keyboard. That, combined with the steep price, drops it to 4 stars.

I bought a 12.9" iPad pro upon its release thinking it could replace my MacBook, but it could not. I couldn't figure out what I didn't like about it but there was something. Well the main difference I should have noticed immediately is typing on an on screen keyboard that big sucks. When I got my 10.5" pro I got the keyboard case at the same time and it makes all the difference. Now my iPad has literally replaced my MacBook. The keyboard has a great feel, the keys are properly spaced, if offers decent protection to the front of the device when not in use, and it can be totally folded behind just like any regular smart case. One thing I will mention is that my first one didn't lay flat when in use. It kept popping up off of the table which was very annoying. I took it back to BB and got another one which is perfect. BB will take care of you if you get a bad one so buy with confidence.

I was hesitant to purchase this (I’ve had several iPads and keyboard cases in the past), but I found an open box deal and jumped on it when I bought the 10.5” iPad. I’ve had no regrets so far. It did take a few times until I figured out how to get it to fold down properly, but once I did, I’ve had no issues. The keyboard is easy to work - is easily the best keyboard I’ve ever had for an iPad (I’ve had Zagg and other pricey ones). The only thing I wish it had was backlighting, but then it’d probably cost $200 haha. I pair it with a UAG Metropolis to cover the back (I just disconnect it from the other part) so it has the pencil holder too) - also got that on sale, so this makeshift system is the best of both worlds for me. Wish it weren’t so expensive, but it’s Apple lol.

When I purchased my first keyboard for my iPad Pro 9.7 I didn’t know what to expect. So when I added the 10.5 iPad Pro to my collection of Apple products, buying the keyboard was a no brainer. I was soon numbed to learned Apple did not have the silicon backing to go on the back of the tablet. I ordered different products to use and none gave me the great feeling I had with the two Apple covers to complete the look and feel, so I returned the keyboard. I’m now buying different covers to see which go well with my iPad, but feel so lost without having Apple covers for my device. Apple if your listening, please create a silicon back cover for the iPad Pro 10.5 so I can get my keyboard back. No other keyboard is better for me and my Rosie (yes, I name my iPads. They are like my right hand for work and everything in life). Love you Apple!!!

I was looking for a light keyboard to accompany my new 10.5" iPad Pro. This Smart Keyboard is great. It does not have extra keys (volume, brightness, etc) nor are the keys backlit like the Logitech Slim Combo; however the Smart Keyboard is much thinner and lighter. It took about about a day to get use to the keys but now I'm typing just as good as I do on my full size iMac keyboard. It works great on my lap. I really like that I can easily remove the keyboard from my iPad as I like to draw on it without the keyboard attached. However, I am able to draw with the keyboard folded back just fine as it is very thin. It is pricey but if you're looking for a light keyboard that works great and you can easily remove, this Smart Keyboard is for you. I only wish Apple had a leather option as they do with their Smart Covers. Overall, an excellent keyboard for the 10.5" iPad Pro!

Nothing above and beyond here for an apple product. The keyboard itself is great, however, the limited versatility and lack of Apple Pencil carrier reflects seemingly thoughtless design. The material quality is comfortable, but lacks durability. I transport my iPad within a new North Face backpack with a fuzzy-lined pouch specifically designed for tablets. That being said, the side seam of the keyboard began fraying within about a week. After having used the smart keyboard for a few months, I would happily switch to an alternative 3rd-party iPad Pro keyboard given the chance/funds.
