Customers highly value the Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter's compatibility with Apple monitors and its ability to connect older Thunderbolt 2 devices to newer Macs. They also appreciate its ease of use and reliable data transfer capabilities, noting its seamless performance. However, some customers find the adapter's price to be a significant drawback. The size of the adapter is also a point of contention for a few users.

Extended the life of my old iMac

Current Apple MacBooks are equipped with Thunderbolt 3 ports. Unfortunately, older Apple devices are not. My mid-2011 iMac with Thunderbolt 2 ports was limping along on an older Mac OS and is incapable of upgrading further. The adapter allows me to connect my new 2019 iMac to the older 2011 machine to use as a great external monitor or access / transfer files. My biggest complaint is the cost. Currently the technology is Apple only, and there is no competitive brand available that performs the same function.
BE AWARE - The port is USB-C construction, but you can NOT use the Thunderbolt 3 port with any USB-C plug that is not designated as Thunderbolt 3. The adapter contains its own computer chip allowing 2-way and multi-use communication that is different than a simple USB-C adapter.

If you need to go from the new Type-C and Thunderbolt 3 connection to any other Pre-Type C Thunderbolt connection, this is pretty much your only option. Apple sells an overpriced ($50) Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. It’s a simple affair, just an input port, and a Thunderbolt 2 cable but it allowed us to use the LaCie d2 drive at Thunderbolt speeds. This is the one adapter that no one else has managed to build into their devices. So, a Type-C dock only works with a computer with Type-C, which is a shame. Sitting down with some engineers who worked with the Thunderbolt chip sets, the reason is primarily cost, the initial chip sets were very expensive, and used 3 chips, now they have it down to a single chip, and while a third of the initial cost, Thunderbolt is still expensive to implement. But, Intel has loosened up, so expect a bit more traction and adoption for the technology. Still, we would love a dock that handles both Type-C and earlier iterations of Thunderbolt. When this was introduced to the public it was $29, and now it’s $50. Come on Apple, give users a break, this should be $19, not $50, but it’s the only game in town at the moment, so you don’t have a choice. Kanex has announced an adapter due to ship at the end of the summer.

High quality Apple part as usual. Easy to use, works well. I haven't had any issues with it. I'm using it to connect a Thunderbolt 2 hard drive to an iMac's Thunderbolt 3 port.

Does EXACTLY what you expect it to do. I used it to switch from 11 year old Mac Mini to new Mac Mini M2 Pro. It worked and worked fast. Able to bring EVERYTHING over and set up EXACTLY like I was setup on the old Mac Mini. I caught it on sale and I am keeping it, just in case!

I haven't upgraded 99% of my electronics to a USB C or TB3 level quite yet. This was purchased to integrate a new piece of recording hardware into a TB2 system. With nearly all other adapters you will be hit or miss. Apple is always going to work with the conversion of data/bandwidth and two-way communication. They are pricey when you think about it as a simple consumer, so I try and imagine what it is like to engineer the product!
Sometimes it helps!

Thunderbolt Mac Monitor saved

I recently purchased this because I update my work Mac book 2015 to a 2018. I have a thunderbolt mac monitor and could no longer use it. This is plug and play, plug in your monitor (thunderbolt end) and plug the usb- c into your mac book and it just works. The price is too much, but what do you expect from Apple. I bought this USBC-3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter primarily to use a blackmagic video encoder box to use an external high quality video camera for my Facebook Lives and Youtube Lives. It works like a charm for the original reason I purchased it.
I however then tried to use it to hook up my external monitor which has a parrallels port that goes into a parallel to thunderbolt 2 adapter and then I take that adapater and go into the thunderboth 3(USBC3) adapter. I basically think it's because it's already on an adapter it won't read.
It's ok though because that was'nt the original purpose but thought I'd try it anyway and that would have been a cool bonus.

Old Drive Dock Still Useful With This Adapter

I have a Thunderbolt 2 2-bay drive dock I've used for years with a Macbook Pro. I now have a Mac Mini M1 that has Thunderbolt 3. The old drive dock is nowhere near as fast as Thunderbolt 3 accessories, but it is still faster than USB 3. This adapter keeps the old drive dock useful even for some (not all) video editing. But the price for a hunk of wire, YIKES!

After changing computers I didn't want to replace my completely functional peripherals just because they were Thunderbolt 1, and this was a welcome buy. It's pretty straightforward, in that it allows you to connect a Thunderbolt 1/2 device/plug into a Thunderbolt 3 device/plug. It's a little pricey, but it's better than buying replacements for $1,000 worth of peripherals.

Adapter for audio I/O use

Purchased a direct thunderbolt iii/USB-c to thunderbolt ii/i adapter for use with iMac 2020 and UAudio Apollo Twin Audio Interface. I wanted a direct connection (no hub) for my audio interface. So working extremely well with Catalina. The adapter works equally well with Big Sur beta OS but uaudio software needs some updating still but doesn't affect audio performance.
