Forget a Smart TV for streaming apps, get Apple TV

I started using streaming apps through my cable box, sure they worked, but interface was out dated and sluggish. Then I got a modern smart tv and interface was better and it was more responsive but the remote was awkward and interface still needed some polish. Just got this 2021 (2nd Gen) Apple TV 4K and WOW what a difference! It’s so fast and responsive I actually had to slow it down (yes there is a setting for the speed of the remote). The interface is simple but cleanly laid out and the cross platform voice search works great. Apps load quick and with a good internet connection videos load almost instantly. Interesting note about the new remote. The updated design advertises the ability to use the touch part like a jog wheel , do circles in either direction to advance or rewind, it does but there’s a catch…The apps themselves have to support it. Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO Max, do suppprt it. Disney + and YouTube do not. You can tell if an app support it when you pause a video if you tap or press the top of the jog wheel; if the on screen icon switches to a jog wheel you can do the circles, if it doesn’t you have to do the side to side like the previous gen remote. I do really hope more apps pick up support for this feature. It works really really well! The ability to use any other Apple device you have as a remote..The phone works the best, the iPad works good too, but is a bit large to use with one hand, even the Apple Watch can run certain functions. Picture quality is top notch. Just be sure to adjust the picture setting to HD and select match (format/range) to source. If you select output to full time 4K HDR the Apple TV will up convert EVERYTHING. This works fine for most video content, but often look awful for menus and most interfaces; resolution looks fine, but the colors get blown out. The sound is great across the board. Just be aware of it’s a case by case weather or not your app of choice supports the latest advancements (spacial audio, lossless, etc) so. Bottom line is the “box” itself is capable of all the current formats and features, but it’s up to each app and or artist to support them. Interesting BONUS FEATURE =. If you have a HomePod or HomePod Mini in the room, the Apple TV will respond to voice commands without using the remote! Now you do have to choose your wording carefully so Siri knows you are referencing a given Apple TV and app, vs an action on the HOmePod itself. It’s really cool to be able to walk into the room and say “Hey Siri, watch Netflix in he living room and the TV powers up, switches inputs and the Netflix app opens. Again it’s. Ot perfect, but once you learn the quirks, it really works smooth.

This is another great Apple device. It was easy to set up on my smart tv. It was a little confusing using along with my smart tv and cable. I have to have 3 remotes, I was able to pair down to 2 eventually. Looks good on stand.

Although these are a lot more expensive than fire stick especially when they are like $25, they are a lot faster far as starting/loading. If you’re already in Apple ecosystem then you would appreciate this even better. I like I can pair my AirPods to it and watch TV quietly. Catch them on sale even better.

I purchased this Apple TV to replace my aging unit (the "non-4K" one, that accompanied the launch of the actual 4K version.) What an upgrade! The older unit was still receiving software updates and running acceptably enough, but this new model runs laps around it. While I have not yet played any Apple Arcade games on it, any other app I've thrown at it launches right away with no fuss. App availability is excellent, as Apple TV continues to be the most robust smart TV option out there. It acts as a HomeKit hub, allowing you to automate your smart devices, and also control them when you are away from your local wifi network. The remote is a welcome upgrade, but maybe a bit overblown. The switch from a square trackpad which lacked tactile feedback to a fully-curved trackpad/D-pad hybrid is great. Both pieces form as one when being used as a trackpad, and the outer diameter of the circle can be used to "scrub" through the timeline of whatever you're watching/listening to. However, this requires support on behalf of the app developer -- they must use tvOS' built-in playback software to utilize this feature. Many developers haven't updated their apps for this, yet (if at all!) Of special note is the addition of a physical power button. Not that putting the Apple TV to sleep before was terribly complicated, but this is much faster and more intuitive. Bonus points go to the HDMI-CEC compatibility; combined with my compatible TV and receiver, turning everything on or off is now done with a single button press. The Apple TV remote truly has replaced any and all other remotes in my living room. It charges via Lightning (still, yes, I know) but lasts about a hundred years on a single charge. Not too much else to say. tvOS has not changed much over the years, and neither has the Apple TV's (outward-facing) hardware. The build quality of both the Apple TV itself and the remote are class-leading. The price is certainly high when compared to the competition, but I tend to justify it with Apple products due to their reputation for build quality, generous warranty and local service via an Apple Store, and general ease of use. Of course, all the "walled garden" stuff also applies here. The more Apple services and devices you use, the more valuable this little box becomes. Your (other Apple device)'s screen can be mirrored to your TV in near realtime. You can browse your iCloud Photo Library or use them as screen savers. Apple Music with FLAC playback for your coveted home theater sound system. Have your own HTPC? VLC is fully supported. You can opt to output audio to any HomePods or AirPods you may own. The aforementioned HomeKit hub factor, which is a must, for me.

Easy to use, screen mirroring works great. Really useful when traveling as it easily connects to hotel WiFi. Only issue is that often I need to turn on my TV separately than the Apple TV though they should both turn off and on from the Apple TV remote.

Worth it for the remote upgrade alone! I have had two Apple TV 4Ks in our home for a few years and my wife's biggest gripe about them was the remote. Hard to find, hard to see what orientation it was in in the dark or just handling. The new design is bigger and easier to see what orientation it is when you pick it up. This new remote has a lot of new features that make the Apple TV easier to use. Most noticeably are the addition of power and mute buttons. In the past turning the TV of was a few click but with the new power button it is just a hold for a second and the system turns off. The mute button is welcome now that we do not have tap the volume down bottom multiple times to answer a phone call. My biggest reason for the upgrades was for performance and new capabilities. I have a Sonos Arc, Sub, and surrounds in my living area and always want to show off the Atmos capabilities of the system. With the addition of Spacial Audio on Apple Music, the room turns into a warmly filled sound stage and is in short, an incredible experience. I am excited for more to come on this. Setup is a breeze with your iPhone as it takes over and sets it up to look just like my previous Apple TV home screens and settings. Make sure to pair it with an OLED TV for amazing video quality in 4K HDR and hopefully at 120HZ soon
