This is yet another rock-solid smart lock from Aqara. The build quality is exceptional, constructed mostly from solid metal with a sleek matte black finish, with few components, such as the battery cover, are plastic. The handles feel smooth and feature grip grooves on the inside for better ergonomics. The keypad is cleverly designed with a hidden number pad, giving the lock a clean, minimalist appearance. It activates with a simple touch on the surface. This lock supports Matter over Thread through border routers or hubs like Apple HomePods, SmartThings, and select Google devices. Unlocking options include the app, Bluetooth, NFC, fingerprint, keypad, or the included physical key. If you’ve installed regular or smart locks before, the process will feel familiar. However, assembling some parts of his lock took some thinking since the box included only an installation diagram, no detailed instructions. Full installation guides are available in the Aqara app during setup or on their website. If you’re new to this, I highly recommend watching their video tutorial first. Once I figured out the trick with the back plate and the extension screws behind the main handle, everything came together smoothly. The latch adjustment was a bit tricky as it uses a push-pin/pull-pin system rather than the easier twist-to-extend method. For my door, I had to adjust between 2 ¾ and 2 ⅜ inches. Aqara includes all necessary hardware and even provides two different strike plates. However, note that the plates come in brushed nickel, not matte black, which I found a bit disappointing. Once the physical installation is complete, programming is straightforward. Keep in mind that a Matter-over-Thread border router is required for remote control. With an Aqara E1 Hub which I own, the lock won't bind since E1 is an Matter bridge only. Although you can connect to the lock via Bluetooth with the Aqara app and still have full access to all its features. I integrated mine with SmartThings without issues, but some features like adding NFC keys or fingerprints weren’t available through SmartThings (only key codes worked). Interestingly, my Google Home devices also detected the lock during setup. In terms of performance, this lock has been fantastic, just like other Aqara locks I’ve owned. The fingerprint reader is lightning-fast, the keypad is highly responsive, and I love how the numbers disappear into the surface. The included NFC tag works flawlessly, though NFC unlocking with my Android phone didn’t work. The built-in speaker is loud and clear, much better than other locks I owned. It runs on four AA batteries, and in case they run out, you can always use the included physical keys. Overall, this is a top-tier smart lock packed with features and multiple unlocking options. It is very well built, durable, easy to install, and designed to retrofit most doors. This lock is absolutely worth considering if you want a reliable, stylish smart lock for your home. Inside the box, you’ll find the lock, two sets of keys, an NFC card, all necessary hardware, and an installation diagram.

Easy to setup Matter Over Thread with HomeKit

The new Smart Lock U300 Matter by AQARA is the good and well made from the stand point of hardware and its controlling application. It feels and look sturdy and it is heavy, and its controlling app is simple and after couple of time of interaction with the app, it is straightforward without major difficulties for setting up and using it on daily basis. Installing: Installing by replacing any existing lever which is based the review, it was simple, as if placing few pieces of puzzle together. But earlier had to spend some time understand the manual and the parts that was included in the package as learned later there were couple of missing details as going through the installation. Setting up with the Application: After the installation, adding to the app and making it ready is simple right after pairing. For one already used to other brand and for new to the subject but some familiarity with the tech can easily understand it. Controlling: From the App, can Lock and Unlock, being within home, or away in remote mode. It provides functionalities to add and manage users, passwords, review lock/unlock activities under Log function, it can set Alert . Setting up with Matter over Thread It was setup with Apple Home Kit, having Apple TV and iPhone, was sufficient to pair and have it recognized in the Apple ecosystem. Once it is setup, form Apple TV and all of Apple devices list it as part of Home and allowing to control or see activities of Lock/Unlock alert. What I wish it would do better: 1. As soon as open the App, there is couple of second of latency, it is not real time for which has to wait a bit to see the actual status. 2.. The lever doesn’t have visual indicator that it is locked such that from outside can’t open. It is only noticeable via the App or physically checking on it. As remark on it, it does have voice indicator, but one need to be front of it to notice. 3. Locking from outside feels bit confusing how it work as can’t tell immediately, hence one has to figure out or spend some time on the subject. 4. Biometric capture is bit confusing as it work. As setting it, in the application shows seven steps but as going through, it consistently shows message failed and need to redo, but the process moves to the final step and then suddenly says completed. 5. Battery, this might depend on preference, but it use 4 batteries of type AA. I would preferred a UBC-C rechargeable battery with option for Solar charging. However its specification states it last 10 months with the set under the assumed usage of 10 lock/unlocks per day and specific temperature. Now does it means total 20 or it is 5/locks and 5 unlocks, couldn’t find answer but as everything it will depends on each user. To finish, the Smart Lock U300 is integration friendly to HomeKit via Matter over Thread, and at high level does make feel secure lock and easy to use aside of above listed wishes.

Installation on the Aqara Smart Lock U300 could not have been easier—seriously, it’s one of the most straightforward smart lock installs I’ve done. One of the cool things I discovered: you can turn the knobs on both sides a full 180 degrees and the lock still works perfectly and feels secure. No matter which way you need to orient it for your door, you can count on reliable performance. That’s peace of mind for any setup. As for the look and build, this is a solidly constructed lock—super sturdy in hand, with a really good-looking, modern, clean style. Even so, it’s not so ultra-modern that it clashes with a traditionally styled home. It’s got universal curb appeal. I’d say it works best on a side or back door, but honestly, the construction and security are solid enough that I’d trust it on a primary entry. I ended up mounting this one on my back door. Unlocking & Everyday Use This lock’s killer feature is the thumb and fingerprint unlock. It’s fast, super accurate, and honestly just makes the door latch feel like something from the future. I found myself repeatedly using the fingerprint unlock just because it’s so satisfying—it’s one of those features that really elevates the daily experience. The number pad is serviceable but I did have a few fumbled keypresses on the slightly-too-small lightup keypad. If it didn’t have the fingerprint reader, this would be a much more serious problem. The speaker is SUPER LOUD so you might want to put it at medium or soft level, if you want a more discrete entry sound. I think one of the things that would improve it in a future software update is an automatic after dark volume reduction. Setup & Smart Features Getting things set up was mostly smooth. The initial pairing and app connection went fine. When it comes to smart home integration, though, there’s good news and bad news. Matter support does exist, but only basic lock/unlock functionality comes through. None of the richer features from the Aqara app—like key code settings, user management, delays, or scenes—flow over via Matter. That’s a disappointment for anyone hoping to run everything from their smart home app. Setting up Matter via Google Home took more time than expected, with a few hiccups before it paired. Expect an uncomfortable wait while you wait for it to finish. Once it was there, it was easy to move and rename the lock. All the advanced features—remote codes, user management, or smart automations—only work locally via Bluetooth or if you have an Aqara Matter Hub. No hub, no cloud control or robust features. That’s a smart home foul, and knocks a star off for me. Bottom Line For installation, flexibility, and style, the Aqara U300 is a winner. That fingerprint unlock is super convenient and genuinely fun. I trust the construction for a main entry but love it as a back door solution. Where it falls short for me is the smart features—unless you’re all-in on the Aqara ecosystem, the lock isn’t nearly as open as it claims to be. Solid choice for reliable, modern security, but you need their hub to get the full “smart” experience.

Great features, requires Matter hub for WiFi

This is my second Smart Lock from Aqara, but my first door handle unit as opposed to a deadbolt. The device is surprisingly hefty, as its constructed from all metal, and consists of an interior and exterior lever handle with integrated touch pin pad, fingerprint reader, NFC key fob, and two physical backup keys. Note that a Matter Controller and Thread Border Router are required for WiFi setup, though you don’t have to explicitly use one of Aqara’s hub devices; however, these would allow you to access more of its features. While most current generation Echo and Eero devices have Matter and Thread hubs built-in, or if you set up the unit with Apple Home, these don't have access to some configuration features like auto-lock and user management. Since I was replacing an existing doorknob with an appropriately sized thru hole, I did not need to do any drilling on my door. The Aqara kit comes with an adjustable length latch and 2 sets of strike plates, one with rounded corners and the other with square corners, so you can match the existing cutouts on your door and jamb. The exterior panel with the pin pad also has a fingerprint reader that can pop out to reveal a keyhole behind it for the physical keys. There are two USB-C power ports, one on either side of the unit, in case it runs out of battery as it can be powered by a power bank or plugged into an outlet as backup. The 4 AA batteries, however, are rated to last about 10 months depending on usage. The interior panel has a passage mode button on top that prevents the door from auto-locking when desired, and the cover panel is removable to reveal the battery bay, set, and reset buttons. Installing the unit is straight forward and only took me 10 minutes. The mounting plate goes on the interior side of the door, and the handles are reversible in orientation depending on which side of the door the unit is being installed. There is only one cable connecting the outer panel to the inner one. The only thing I found odd is that the panels are not aligned, height-wise, after installation. It doesn’t impact functionality, but it looks a bit strange. Once installed, you’ll need to install the Aqara Home app to a mobile device to set it up and add users for access. Bluetooth is required for setup and you’ll need to be near the lock physically in order to modify its settings and configure users. In order to enable WiFi access from anywhere with an internet connection, you will need a device with Matter/Thread router capabilities. For this I added the device via the Alexa app as I am using an Echo Show 8 (Gen 3) as my hub. This also enables features like remotely locking and unlocking via app or voice. Each user in the app can use multiple entry methods including fingerprints, PIN codes, and NFC devices. You’ll also be able to add temporary users that have codes with limitations like specific scheduled days/dates and time windows when they are active; this is perfect for service people or guests who only need access during specific like a dog walker, cleaning service, or renter. One-time use codes can be created as well and will not work for subsequent entry attempts. While the unit comes with an NFC fob, you can also simply use the NFC chip in your mobile device or smart watch, ensuring that you always have a method of entry with you. Sensitive data like fingerprints and PIN codes are stored on the lock itself, and are not accessible on the cloud, so these will work even if the lock loses its WiFi connection. If you have other Aqara camera devices, like their doorbell, you can create an automation that will unlock the door automatically using facial recognition, which I thought was pretty cool. I like that this lock has auto-locking and locks a few seconds after unlocking by default. Since it only disables the latch movement from the exterior lever, you’ll always be able to exit the room from inside. Do Not Disturb mode adjusts the volume or silences the lock, for examples at night, and Failed Attempt Lockout disables the lock for a period of time of your choosing, if a PIN has been incorrectly entered 10 times. One interesting feature is the Night Latch mode which only allows the admin, Bluetooth, or physical key to unlock the unit while other methods of entry like NFC and AI voice assistants are disabled. Passage mode is great for when you’ll be going in and out through the door frequently or have a lot of guests as you don’t want the door to lock each time and have to unlock it again, causing inconvenience and wasting battery. Overall, the U300 is a versatile smart lock that works great for both interior and exterior doors. It was quick and easy to install when replacing an existing door knob, and the multiple methods of entry lets you decide how you prefer to open the lock, and the USB-C backup means you can always power the device and never get locked out. I don’t like that without an Aqara Matter-enabled hub, I need to be physically close to the lock in order to manage it and add users and codes over Bluetooth, as being able to confer access remotely is one of the biggest perks of a cloud-enabled smart lock. However, with the Alexa integration, I can still remotely unlock or lock the door on-demand when needed, which is still useful.

The U300 is one of the few non-dead bolt smart locks on the market. It is easy to install, has a great look and feel and connects to all major smart home platforms. The Good Install: The install is straight forward and Aqara has online videos along with a step by step installation sheet. Everything is included (batteries, and 2 different strike plates and face plates) You will have to download the Aqara app to start with, once this is done you can add the device to a matter controller. This worked easily for me, and I set it up through google home. Response time: The response time was excellent when using the pin codes, fingerprint or via app when away or at home. Matter over thread works crazy fast when opening from your phone, it was faster than using the fingerprint sensor. Built: The built is excellent with its mix of metal and plastic. The U300 is a well weighted door lock. Even the touch screen doesn’t portion doesn’t show smudges from my fingers after using the pin pad over 100 times. Ways to enter: This is one of the best things about the U300, you can unlock the door with fingerprints, Bluetooth, NFC card, Apple watch, passcode and even keys. Thread/matter: This is huge for future proofing, as thread/matter get more robust the lock will grow along with it. The Bad I personally only had two issues. One being the lock itself doesn’t have a locking button/lever therefore you can only lock if from the app, unless you have it lock everytime the door closes which has its downsides. Second thing being that you cannot take full advantage of everything the U300 offers through matter, for this you will need to buy a Aqara hub. The reason this was annoying to me is because Matter (depending on which smart home plate form its on) works/feels much different than the Aqara layout, which to me is must better. The U300 is a great non-dead bolt style lock which can be used anywhere and looks/feels great. While the controls are limited without a Aqara hub, having the U300 work over matter makes it future proof.

Sturdy, Attractive and Smart Home Super Powers!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Highlights: * Sturdy and attractive. * Tons of unlocking methods (fingerprint, NFC card, HomeKey, BT, Matter/Thread, etc.). * Long battery life with replaceable AA batteries. * Easy to access power jump from the outside if the batteries are dead. * Easy installation with in-app guidance videos. * Wide compatibility for home automation systems. * Passage mode for when you’re in/out often. Room for Improvement: * The guided installation in the app times out too fast. Installation (hardware): Unlike many other retrofit smart locks, this one has almost no printed installation instructions. Essentially, you download the free Aquara app, choose to install this model lock, and the app guides you through everything with helpful videos and descriptive text. If you’ve ever installed a door handle in general or any similar door handles with keypads (smart or not), then this installation should be fast and easy for you. The only part that required watching the video for me was changing the handles from the default of right-hand swing to left-hand swing for my door. The video clearly showed what to do; remove a screw from the inside of each handle, a quick rotation of the handle the other way and then reinstall that same screw. The rest was standard stuff; installation of the latch, the plates, the handles, routing the cable from the outside portion to the inside portion, etc. The only slight issue I had with the whole app-based installation was that my phone’s screen timed out during some of the steps that took longer for me to complete. When I unlocked my phone and returned to the app, sometimes the app had closed the installation steps and returned to its Home Screen. A few times this required me to restart the setup steps and skip all of the steps that I had already completed. Not difficult, but it was a bit of a pain that the app didn’t consistently remember where I left off. After the hardware was installed and the 4 AA batteries (provided) were inserted, the lock started up in pairing mode and was ready to associate to the app and my smart home. The setup videos transitioned directly into adding the lock to the app by scanning the “Magicpair” QR code on the inside of the door. This quickly and easily added the lock to my Aquara app via the local Bluetooth connection. From here, I could use the lock’s Bluetooth connection to my phone to set up users, set their passcodes, fingerprints or NFC key fobs and change basic settings of the lock. All of this was fast and self-explanatory to do. If you don’t need to integrate the lock into a smart home or set up HomeKeys, this is enough to get the lock working. Setup (software): Our home primarily uses Home Assistant and Apple Home (HomeKit). Both support Matter over Thread and each has their own advantages. For example, in Home Assistant, we have visibility and integration with all devices in our home across multiple integrations even if they are not compatible with HomeKit. In HomeKit, we have the ability to set up HomeKey on our Apple Watches and iPhones for another easy option to unlock the door. Our Home Assistant setup has integrations for just about everything, so after getting the lock set up in the Aquara app via Bluetooth, next was in Home Assistant using the Matter integration and Thread radio. Setup was easy using the code on the inside part of the lock (next to the Magicpair QR code) and the lock is now fully accessible in Home Assistant. Next is enabling the lock to also be set up in Apple HomeKit. For this, we needed Home Assistant to generate a suitable setup code. Once that was done, I went into HomeKit, chose to “Add Accessory” and wade through the menu options until I got to the place where I could type in the setup code that Home Assistant generated. As of the time of this review, that was the selection of “More options…”, then “My Accessory isn’t Shown Here”, then “Enter code…”. A little roundabout, but it worked quickly and easily once I entered the code. I’ve been using HomeKey with several other locks for a while and love the convenience of just holding my Apple Watch up to the panel to unlock it. Once the lock was also set up in HomeKit, the Home app offered to enable my existing HomeKey to lock and unlock it. That was also easy. Usage: With the lock added to Home Assistant, Apple HomeKit and the Aquara app, I now have 8 ways to unlock the door! * Home Assistant integration * Apple Home (HomeKit) integration * Aqaura App via Bluetooth/WiFi * HomeKey via Apple Watch and iPhone * RF Key Tag that came with the lock * PIN codes set up per user in the Aquara app * Fingerprints set up per user in the Aquara app * Physical keys that came with the lock I really like the placement of the fingerprint reader as it’s super convenient to wrap my fingers around the handle and touch the sensor with my registered thumb. My next favorite way to unlock the door is with HomeKey as I almost always have my watch on. If neither of those work or are convenient, typing in the PIN code is a great option. If all else fails and none of the apps or integrations are working, the provided physical keys always work. The lock uses replaceable AA batteries instead of being rechargeable and is supposed to last a while on those batteries. This is great, because it’s not really convenient to recharge something installed on the door like a lock. The panel and the apps/integrations provide enough notice that the batteries are getting low, but if you miss those notices and the lock’s power ever become too low to unlock the door normally, there is a USB-C port on the outside where you can “jump” the lock with a USB battery to get in so you can change the batteries. In the Aquara app, there are many features you can set up such as the Passage mode which enables the button on the inside of the lock to keep the door unlocked temporarily. This is great if you’re constantly passing in and out of the door so you don’t have to repeatedly unlock it. User Management is a breeze in the Aquara app. Set up each user’s access level, PIN code, Fingerprints and/or Key Tags. Then choose if you want to restrict that user to a scheduled time. This is handy for regular visitor or even one-off temporary visitors. Of course, each of the integration systems has tons of options for controlling the lock, too. This lock really does have it all! It’s solidly-built, attractive, has TONS of smart home integration options including Matter over Thread, and provides the right amount of security and convenience.

I'm using this in an indoor garage door that since it doesn't need a deadbolt, the lever set is meant to be more convenient. Physical: Most of the lock is metal with some pieces plastic. For example, the handles are metal except for the back of the handle that is plastic, and other mixed finishes through. Handles are rather large and feel solid. The keypad section appears all black until touching the surface, where the buttons illuminate. The keypad emits beeps when in use (configurable) and also voice prompts in certain cases. It's powered by 4xAA and for emergency it can be powered by USB-C. It has a covered USB-C plug on each side on the outside of the lock. It also works with rechargeable AA batteries. I use Apple Home and Home Assistant, and I don't have any other Aqara device. Installation is straightforward. There are no instructions on the lock except for a drilling template, if needed. Instructions are available by scanning a QR code on the box. Keep this in mind if you're having this installed by a contractor. Initially, paired it with Apple Home without the Aqara app, and it worked. However keep in mind that you need to press the Set button when removing the indoor cover and scan the Matter QR code on the side of the lock. It worked but could not configure any setting on the lock except for a Matter-manager per-user PIN, on Apple Home. From Apple Home, added the lock to Home Assistant and again worked fine, except there isn't anything to configure. Eventually gave in and installed the Aqara app on my iPhone. I was able to use a special 'HomeKit' mode without having to login but didn't let me set many of the settings on the lock. Eventually relented, created an Aquara lock, which forces to consent to share lock statistics with Aqara. It doesn't disclose where their servers are for this. Consent for sharing data about the lock is non-negotiable to be able to configure it via Aqara. Then paired the lock via Bluetooth and was able to configure relock, lockout and create internal users with PIN and Fingerprint. Fingerprint recognition is excellent. Works by holding the handle and resting the thumb on the fingerprint sensor on the edge of the handle. Notifications and control via Matter works very well. It notifies and reacts with no perceptible delay. So far it’s been very consistent on this. I'm adding some automations like turning on lights when the door is unlocked, etc. One of the reasons I got this lock is to be able to use Apple's Home Key. It did not work. Tried with two different phones/user and Apple Watch. Re-paired the lock and still didn't work. Pressing the PIN works fine but it's a touch sensitive pad and if entering the PIN with fingers at an angle might not register the correct digit. The lock also came with a single NFC tab but since didn't have a need for it didn't set it up. To be able to set up temporary codes, it can be set using Apple Home which has control for adding guests with schedules or temporary PIN codes. For setting up codes while away using que Aqara app requires a separate Aqara hub, which I'm not interested in. Unlocking remotely from the Apple Home app works great as is. Once I open the door, there is no way to lock it from the inside. One has to wait for the auto relock, which can be set instantly or at different wait times in minutes. In an outdoor door, the only reasonable setting would be instant relock, which locks right after opening the handle. It makes it more inconvenient if coming in and out while unloading groceries, etc. The lock also has a passage mode which leaves the lock unlocked for a programmable time and can be set from the lock itself. One minor complain is that the QR codes for Matter and Aqara systems are on the side of the lock and very prominent. There is a backup label inside the battery compartment that has the PIN codes but no QR codes. I don't know why it's not all inside the battery cover and has to be so visible. A couple of times while setting up the lock got myself locked out of that entrance, because the lock would say unlocked but remain locked. Went back to normal after removing a battery and adding it again. When the lock is in locked mode, the exterior handle can be moved but doesn't actuate the door. It actuates the door when locked. The lock can also detect the door unlocked using an internal gyroscope, it doesn't need magnets, which is nice, however doesn't report to matter if the door is open or not. It has a physical key, and the keyhole is hidden behind the fingerprint sensor. One has to press on the side of the fingerprint sensor to help pop it out to access the keyhole. The key is meant for emergency use only. Also it's not easy to rekey. Getting to remove the cylinder means disassembling much of the lock and likely voiding its warranty. Overall, very nice lock but with room for improvement. Although it's a matter over thread lock, it's not fully functional without an Aqara hub, as one cannot set temporary PINs. Not sure why Apple's Home Key feature didn't work for me. Overall, a very advanced lock with several rough edges. While more advanced than most locks, on paper it checks all the boxes but in practice has its limitations. I expected something with more polish from Aqara / Xiaomi. It's however a great lock for an office and other places where its limitations are not a concern.

Aqara U300: The Lock That Made My Study Smarter

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Aqara Smart Lock U300, finished in a modern looking matte black, is a spring-latch lever-style smart lock designed for doors that don’t use a deadbolt—like interior doors, garage entry doors, side entry doors, or similar setups. It’s secure, but not intended to replace or work alongside a traditional deadbolt. I installed it on my study door, which acts as a private space for my wife and me, housing all of my electronics, gadgets, and personal items we like to keep secure, especially from the kids. It’s nice having a door that looks good, locks securely, and provides us so many features. One important note: the U300 does require a Thread border router. This device helps different smart home ecosystems communicate with each other and ensures connectivity with your smart lock. I personally chose the Aqara M100 for my thread border router, an affordable option that looks like a USB stick and plugs into any USB Gen A port with at least 2.5 watts of power. You might already have a Thread border router in your existing smart home ecosystem, and if not, there are plenty of options out there. * Unboxing/Design/Build Quality * When I first opened the box, I was honestly a little intimidated. There were a lot of parts; screws, plates, and brackets. It looked like it might be complicated. Once I actually started putting it together, I realized it wasn’t bad at all. In fact, the physical install ended up being the easiest part of the whole process. The hardware feels really solid. The whole lock assembly has just the right weight to it. It’s heavy enough to feel like a quality product, not something flimsy or cheaply made. When you're taking it out of the box and installing it on the door it feels solid, it doesn't rattle or feel hollow. Everything feels nicely put together, and you can tell it’s built well without being overly bulky or heavy. One minor mistake I made during installation was when I got to the interior side of the door and accidentally used the wrong screws. That’s when I realized they had included multiple sets of screws in different standard sizes, not just for door thickness, but for a couple of different parts. Once I swapped in the right ones, everything lined up perfectly. It was a good reminder to slow down and double-check each step. * Specs/Features * The U300 runs on four AA batteries, which are included in the box, and according to Aqara, you can expect around ten months of battery life. If the batteries ever die, there are USB-C ports on the lock that let you temporarily power it up using something like a portable charger, and as a last resort there are physical keys ensuring you don't get locked out. It connects via Bluetooth low energy and Matter over Thread, so there’s no built-in Wi-Fi. I used it with an Aqara M100 border router, but any compatible Thread router will work. The lock works with Apple HomeKit, including Apple Home Key, as well as Google Assistant, Alexa, and other third party matter platforms. For access, it supports fingerprint, PIN codes, the Aqara app, NFC cards, Apple Wallet, and a physical key backup. The lock is made of zinc alloy, is IPX4-rated for splash resistance, and is designed to fit most standard door setups—door thickness around one and three-eighths to two inches and either a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset. * Performance * The installation was much easier than I thought it would be. The physical installation took about 30 minutes, while the software and setup took about an hour and a half. The hardware installed cleanly on my door without any problems. Using the lock has been great. I use the fingerprint reader the most, and it’s been fast, accurate, and dead-on every time. My wife uses the fingerprint reader too, but also has a pin code if necessary. Out of all the unlock methods, your phone, the keypad, NFC, the fingerprint is definitely the most convenient for me. There’s not a ton to say other than it just works. I haven’t had any issues during regular use. The only minor problems I had were at the very beginning during software setup, and even those were just short-lived. I also really like the Aqara app. You get great status feedback like battery level and a log that shows who’s been coming and going. It’s packed with features that are actually useful without being overwhelming. * Pros * * Quality build and modern design * Numerous unlock methods including fast biometric access * Works with all major ecosystems * Long battery life * Easy installation * Suggestions/Needs Improvement * * Software connectivity is a little finicky while installing * Wifi would be a nice add * Need printed instructions too * Conclusion * The Aqara Smart Lock U300 has changed my opinion on smart locks. While I’ve been curious about them in the past, this particular model impressed me with its solid construction, thoughtful design, and reliable performance. The installation was much easier than I thought it would be, and the Aqara app is really good, polished and easy to use. After using the U300, I really want to try one on an exterior door. I had no idea that smart locks could do this much. Personally, I also love the fact that this lock supports the apple ecosystem. For anyone considering a smart lock, the U300 delivers an impressive balance of quality, design, smart home compatibility, features, and technology. I highly recommend it.

The Aqara door handle was the easiest door handle I have ever installed. Note this was installed on front exterior door. However, if you have never installed a door handle or had to modify parts of a door I highly recommend having someone with experienced with you or hiring someone to make the install. I simply opened the box and took all the parts out, opened the app (I already have an existing system with another lock), clicked add a device, selected the device (u300) and the app provides easy step by step instructions with live animations/videos on how to install the door knob. It took me about an hour to install on an existing door that was being used. I had to modify and use my drill a variety of drill parts and an oscillating tool to cut the trim for the lock plate. It was easy enough but if you haven’t done it before…don’t try it alone. After the physical install I continued with the app. It was pretty easy set up scanning my fingerprints was easy in connecting to Bluetooth and Wi-Fi through a thread border device. I do have a Aqara E1 hub however I learned it is incompatible, but there are a variety of different ways to connect to a thread border device that which you may already have in your home. Aqara provided me the following list of devices: Aqara Hub M1, Aqara Hub M3, G5 Pro, or G410 or non Aqara devices such as an Apple TV 4k, Home Pod, or Amazon Echo. The overall update and digital process setting up this device took about 5 to 10 minutes. Very easy. Since installing the door handle the functions have worked flawlessly and it has been easy to use. I grab the door handle, touch my finger on the pad, it instantly unlocks and I’m in. Having experience with this brand, I know it’s reliable, but it proves my point now having multiple Aqara devices in my house that there are no gimmicks here. I don’t have to mess with apps it just works and when I need the app or I need the notifications they are there, but my devices aren’t dependent on me continuing to maintain it. My experience with their devices and batteries are great. Since I don’t have long-term experience with this handle, I can’t really say yet, but I know my other Aqara only requires a battery change about once a year and it is heavily used - expecting a similar experience here. As I stated, this door handle is easy to use. I like that it remains locked at all times and that I can just simply press my finger to get back in as needed. No worries or 2nd guesses if your door is locked. The app allows for custom lock features and you customize how the door locks/unlocks. The door handle is covered in black matte so it show nearly no finger prints and the touch pad is also finger print free. The biggest plus with Aqara is their locks come with regular keys and a NFC fob. The fob is great for keeping around for guests or for my son’s bag but having spare keys available in case the batteries die is a great feature. I high recommend the U300 to anyone looking to add smart locks to their home/business or to anyone adding to an existing setup. Except to receive a reliable and secure product.

Love This Aqara Smart Lock - Security Minded

Th Aqara - Smart Lock U300 Matter over Thread Lever Set is an attractive set. It is very well made and heavy. I feel safe using it. My husband and I did have a bit of trouble installing it because it was not the correct size for our door. We had a deadbolt and separate door knob/lock installed in our door. The Aqara was too long to work in the handset hole so we had to take out the deadbolt as well to install this. I highly encourage you to Perform your measurements before you start this project. We ended up installing it upside down to get it to work properly. It actually does not look bad installed this way. The Aqara Smart Lock Set comes with everything you need to install included in the box. All we needed was a screw driver. I used the pre-installed Matter in my Apple TV to set this set up. So many smart products have Matter installed so it is easy to add this to them instead of purchasing a separate Matter over Thread device. It now runs smoothly with “My Home” APP. I can lock and unlock using MY Home App. I installed The Aqara Smart Lock APP also but found that I like using MY Home best. I love that it locks itself after a few minutes after closing. Security is important to me. That is why we have a smart home. I love that if my Grandkids come to visit and we are not home I can unlock the door with just my cell phone. There are multiple ways to lock/unlock this set. The keypad is easy to use and set up. I have not set up the fingerprint scan yet. It comes with two keys as well. But like I said above my favorite way to unlock is using my iPhone My Home App. I use MY Home App to run all my smart devices so it just feels comfortable to use it for this smart lock as well.

It also looks great in any décor due to its black matte smooth finish. The installation is easy with the Aqara application since it shows step by step with not only instructions but videos, so it just takes a bit longer than a regular lock just because there is wiring and programming. Once it is installed, it pairs to the phone to be able to function, and since I already have a hub at home for other products, it was easy to set this one too. And just so you know, if you have Thread Border Router, it has an advanced connectivity and since I already have a hub I did not have any problems connecting it. I really like that the door can be opened with the fingerprint, keypad, Bluetooth or using the key in case the battery runs out. And if we are running late, my family can go inside and make themselves at home until we arrive. The lock is powered with 4 batteries and according to Aquara, they will last a long time. We really like out new smart lock from Aquara, we like the notifications it sends out to let us know when someone got home, we like the many ways there are to open the door, not just the old fashion key.

    Next Gen Home Smart Lock!

Having a smart lock for your home provides so much flexibility on how you, your family, your friends, or however you may choose to have flexibility in accessing your homes without having to deal with keys and being able to monitor rom afar. Aqara has made a name for itself in this realm lately but their latest U300 makes a big step! PROS: - Unboxing this, the U300 is super elegant and sleek! It’s advertised as no smudge and I would say it really delivers on that. It has a really nice rounded but modern look, and overall a minimalistic but luxurious look to it. - One of its huge selling points is how you can access this smart lock through various means. You can use the touchscreen keyboard, the fingerprint reader in the handle, via your app, or through probably my favorite way by adding a smart key to your apple wallet and accessing it through just your iPhone or Apple Watch! All super easy ways to use it. - And of course, you can create multiple access codes in case you want to give out different codes to different people, or perhaps its for a rental property, or if you want to give it to a repair man who is working on your house while you are out. Easy enough to create a code or remove it! - Adding to that, the fingerprint reader works with up to 50 fingerprints so we have been able to set it up for multiple people with no problem switching between all of us. - Part of what makes this so future proof and next gen is that it works with Matter over thread support. Thread is what helps connect different smart systems across your home and matter is somewhat the way they all speak to each other. So the standard will become that all these devices “speak” matter and “communicate” over thread. Being that the Amara is built for that, it means it thrives on a WiFi system that supports those which makes for super fast, easy use of this device and allows it to connect to different systems like your Apple home. - Lastly, this is rated to work in all types of weather! Rain, wind, dirt, heat, snow, ice - you name it! Of course you want something like this to work in those environments and it sure does. CONS: - Like all smart locks, this one only works on a specific type of door setup. As in, it works best when you have 1 door handle and you replace it with this one. BOTTOM LINE: - Aqara delivers on a Net Gen smart lock that is going to be able to last forever with how future proof it is. You can unlock this in so many ways including a code, fingerprint, or your Apple Wallet - and it looks fantastic doing so. The U300 has been a great addition to our home and has made ease of use fantastic!

was excited to get the lock and use it with Apple home key. And I will say that once it’s setup it’s pretty good and nice to just tap a watch or phone to unlock. I also like the placement of the finger print reader, as you grab the handle you scan your thumb without having to scan it and then open. Unfortunately there are a lot of other things that just don’t work or don’t make sense. First off is the design, this is to be an outside lock but at least where I live every door had a deadbolt. So it means you either have a manual lock which defeats the purpose or you need to have two smart locks. Either way I’d prefer this to also cover or be a deadbolt too. Af far as the connections you must connect to the Aqara app. From there you add a user and admin. Then you add it to matter, but you now setup a password again. If you try and not use the app you can but then you cannot use the finger print reader. With it in my Apple home I’m able to control it without Bluetooth, but I cannot do anything in the Aqara app. If you want to see things like if the door is open you need to use the app, but you then need an Aqara hub to do this. Because the way it’s set you need to manager users in both Apple and in the Aqara app. Just making it over complicated. Even worse for my case, I also have two other systems, home assistant and Alexa, and try as I would I could not get them to connect to the lock. It works with Apple, but doesn’t seem to connect to other matter networks. For my case there are better options, and I’d rather do a deadbolt. But if you really want Apple integration and that’s it maybe this works for you.

Thank you for sharing your experience with the U300 Door Lock. We’re glad you enjoy the Apple Home Key feature and fingerprint placement, and we’d like to address some of the points you raised:

Thread & Matter Support: The U300 is a Thread-based lock and can connect directly to Matter apps if you have a compatible 2-in-1 Matter controller.

Fingerprint Limitation: Due to current Matter protocol limitations, fingerprint and some advanced functions are only supported through the Aqara Home app. With Matter, you can still lock and unlock the door, but fingerprint and user management require the Aqara app.

User Management: The U300 can only manage users when connected via Bluetooth in the Aqara Home app. This ensures security and proper configuration.

We understand this can feel more complex than expected, especially when using multiple smart home systems, and we’ll work on making this clearer in our product guides. Your feedback is very valuable to us as we continue improving both the product and the user experience. AqaraBazaarvoice

This is my second Aqara smart lock, and it’s just as solid as the first. Installation was simple—if you’ve ever installed a basic doorknob, you can handle this. The app instructions walk you through setup step-by-step, and the lock itself feels heavy, sturdy, and well-built. The fingerprint reader works great. I’ve contacted support a couple of times for unrelated issues, and the service has been excellent. At this point, I’m seriously considering switching all my Ring devices over to Aqara.

The product has good build quality. However, I cannot connect it successfully technical wise. (1) it requires you to use Aqara app to activate the lock’s admin function for first time usage and set passcode. No physical setup is allowed for first time with the lock locally. (2) to connect with the app, I first bought the Aqara e1 hub, which failed to connect due to compatibility. (3) then the Aqara app recommend me use m100 hub to pair u300 lock. Then I bought m100 hub, however it still fails to connect to u300 due to ipv6 issues of the fios router. Very frustrated after twice of hub purchase. Overall I feel this product is too tech savvy. An ordinary person with limited tech knowledge would find it difficult to setup.

Thank you for sharing your experience and for recognizing the build quality of the U300. We’re sorry for the frustration during setup and want to clarify a few key points:

The Aqara U300 is a Thread-based lock and does not connect with Aqara Zigbee hubs such as the E1 or M2. Instead, it requires a Matter controller with Thread support (e.g., Apple HomePod mini, Apple TV 4K,M100, M3 or certain third-party 2-in-1 controllers).

The Aqara app is required for the initial admin/passcode setup, while basic functions like locking and unlocking can be managed through Matter platforms.

Due to current Matter protocol limitations, advanced features such as fingerprint use and user management are available only via Bluetooth through the Aqara app.

We completely understand how this could feel overly technical, and your feedback will help us improve both our product descriptions and setup instructions. If you’d like further assistance, our support team is happy to help walk you through the correct setup for your environment. AqaraBazaarvoice

Aqara Smart Lock U300 - A Game Changer for My Home

Alright, so I finally pulled the trigger on the Aqara Smart Lock U300 in black, and I've got to say, it's been a pretty fantastic addition to my smart home setup. I'd been eyeing a Matter over Thread lock for a while, especially one with all these access options, and this one seemed to tick all the boxes for my garage entry door. After putting it through its paces for a few weeks, here's my honest take. ### Getting It Installed: Easier Than Expected! Honestly, installing new locks usually makes me groan, but the U300 was surprisingly straightforward for a lever set. The instructions were pretty clear, and it fit right into my existing door's bore hole without any fuss – no extra drilling needed, which was a huge win. The trickiest part was just making sure the wires were neatly tucked away before I screwed everything together. All told, I had it up and running in about 30-40 minutes. ### Living With It: Features That Really Shine This lock is absolutely packed with features, and for the most part, they work incredibly well in day-to-day use: * **Fingerprint Access:** This is, without a doubt, my absolute favorite way to get in. The fingerprint reader is lightning fast and super accurate. My thumb just naturally lands on it as I grab the handle, and boom, it's unlocked instantly. It's a lifesaver when my hands are full with groceries or just need quick access. * **Touchpad/PIN Codes:** The touchpad is really responsive and easy to see, even at night thanks to the backlight. I've set up my main code and a temporary one for a friend, which has been incredibly convenient. The anti-peep feature (where you can type in extra numbers) is a nice touch for added security. * **Matter over Thread & Smart Home Integration:** This was a huge selling point for me, and it's delivered. Connecting it to my Apple HomeKit setup via Matter over Thread was a breeze. It's incredibly responsive in the Home app – locking and unlocking happens virtually instantly, and I get reliable notifications every time. The Thread connectivity feels much more solid than any Bluetooth-only lock I've tried. * **Apple Home Key/NFC:** Being able to just tap my iPhone or Apple Watch to unlock the door feels like pure magic. It's so convenient, especially if I'm just running out for a quick second and don't want to dig for keys or remember a code. The option for Aqara NFC cards is also a thoughtful addition for others who might need access. * **Auto-Lock:** I really appreciate the flexibility here. Initially, I had it set to auto-lock immediately, but for the garage door, I found myself going in and out a lot. A quick firmware update allowed me to set a longer delay, or even enable a "Passage Mode" where it stays unlocked until I manually lock it. That adaptability is fantastic. * **Build Quality:** The black finish looks super sleek and modern. The exterior feels really solid and premium – definitely not flimsy at all. It feels like a lock that's built to last and handle daily use, even with some exposure to the elements (it's IPX4 rated, which is perfect for my covered garage entry). ### What I Really Liked: * **Speed & Convenience:** The fingerprint reader and Apple Home Key are absolute game-changers for quick, secure entry. * **Rock-Solid Connectivity:** Matter over Thread makes this lock incredibly reliable and responsive within my smart home. * **Sleek Design:** It genuinely looks fantastic on the door and really elevates the aesthetic. * **Tons of Access Options:** It covers every way I could possibly want to unlock my door. ### A Couple of Things That Could Be Better: * **Battery Life (Still Testing):** Aqara claims up to 10 months, but I haven't had it long enough to fully verify that. I'm hoping the Thread efficiency lives up to the promise. * **Physical Key Access:** While it's great to have a physical key backup and a USB-C port for emergencies, getting to the keyhole means prying up the fingerprint sensor. It's clearly a "last resort" option, which is fine, but something to be aware of. * **Hub Nuances:** While Matter simplifies things a lot, understanding the difference between needing a Thread Border Router versus an Aqara hub for certain advanced automations can be a slight learning curve if you're new to smart locks. ### My Final Thoughts: The Aqara Smart Lock U300 is an excellent smart lock, especially if you're already in a Matter-compatible smart home ecosystem like Apple HomeKit. Its combination of incredibly fast fingerprint recognition, versatile access methods, and reliable Thread connectivity makes daily entry an absolute breeze. It's a significant upgrade from traditional locks and truly feels like a modern, secure solution. If you're looking to boost both the security and convenience of your home, I'd definitely say this lock is worth the investment.

So I've been in the Aqara ecosystem a while with a hub installed and a plentiful amount of door and other sensors spread across the house, and when the U300 Smart Lock hit the market, I figured I’d take a shot at implementing it on my garage side access entry door. I didn’t want a standard, deadbolt-type lock for this door, so the lever-style U300 looked perfect on paper. Out of the box, it feels and looks solid — like, definitely pricier than I had expected. The integrated fingerprint reader in the handle works surprisingly quickly and has been quite reliable to date. I also love that it integrates with Apple HomeKit, and supports Matter over Thread. Setup was… not exactly smooth. The instructions for the app were lacking in specificity, and I had to futz around a bit to get everything connected cleanly. But once I got it online, it’s been stable. Being able to use the app, a PIN, NFC tags, or even Apple Home Key is just awesome flexibility. I have auto-lock enabled, but also use “Passage Mode” when I’m working in the yard and don’t want the door constantly locking behind me. Battery life looks good so far, and the dual USB-C backup ports are a nice touch. All told, if you’re already in the Aqara ecosystem as I am, the U300 is a smart add-on — just be prepared for a bumpy setup experience. Once you get past that, it’s a good, slick smart lock.

Setup and Installation Out of the box, the Aqara U300 looks and feels premium—clean lines, matte finish, and a sturdy lever design. It comes with everything needed for installation, and it’s designed to replace most standard lever-style locks without having to change the door structure. Installation took me about 20 minutes. The instructions were clear, and everything fit as expected. Once installed, pairing the lock to the Aqara app was easy using Bluetooth. From there, I linked it to Apple Home using Matter over Thread, which made it immediately visible across my smart home setup. Daily Use and Smart Unlock Options Where the U300 really shines is in the variety of ways you can unlock it. Here’s how I’ve been using it: Fingerprint reader: Fast and reliable. I’d say it recognizes my thumb in under a second—no lag, no errors so far. Touchpad PIN: You can set unique codes for different people. I’ve used this for guests and it works every time. Apple Home Key: My favorite feature. I just tap my iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock and it opens instantly—no need to pull out the app. NFC tags: I tested a few pre-programmed tags and they worked as expected. It’s a nice option for kids or someone who doesn’t carry a phone. Traditional key access: Just in case, there’s a hidden key slot. Haven’t had to use it, but I like having the option. Bluetooth: The lock can also be opened directly via phone when nearby, even without Wi-Fi. Smart Features That Work Auto lock is a lifesaver. I set mine to lock 30 seconds after closing, and it’s kept the door secure without needing to think about it. You can adjust the timer in the app. Notifications are instant. I get alerts when the door is locked or unlocked, and I can check the full history in the app. The integration with Matter over Thread has been rock solid. I’ve had no connection drops or sync delays, and everything responds quickly whether I’m home or away. The lock also supports automation—for example, I set it to unlock when I arrive home and relock at night automatically. Final Thoughts The Aqara U300 checks every box for what I want in a smart lock: speed, flexibility, and rock-solid reliability. The fingerprint reader is fast, Apple Home Key is seamless, and the auto-lock feature gives peace of mind. Between NFC, PIN, Bluetooth, and the physical key backup, there’s a method for everyone in the house. If you're already in the Apple Home or Matter ecosystem, this is one of the most complete smart locks available right now—especially if you want a lever-style design that doesn’t scream "tech gadget." It looks good, works great, and makes leaving or arriving home effortless. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to upgrade their entryway with a clean, flexible smart lock that delivers on performance.

I have been waiting to put a more advanced smart lock/door knob on our home until I found one that I really liked. With that I did have to get rid of our base that we had (Aqara Smart Hub M100) and get a more advanced one (Aqara Hub M3) so that I could set up the advanced features (individual fingerprints, individual codes, temporary codes, etc). So keep that in mind, and find out if your Thread Border Router is compatible with this before purchasing or you might have to upgrade your current system to support the Aqara Smart Lock U300. Unboxing & Initial Impressions Unboxing the Aqara U300 I could tell that it was going to be right at home with all of our other smart home devices, and our non-smart home items as well. The U300 has a beautiful finish to it, has a nice weight to it (without being overly bulky) & it does not look or feel like some of the cheap alternatives that are out there. It looks and feels premium. Rating: 5/5 Installation When I fired up the Aqara Home app and went about installing the Smart Lock the app walked me through everything. The door handle was on the opposite way of how I needed it, and so the app walked me through how to rotate the handle the other direction. Getting the U300 synced with my M100 hub was a bit of a chore. But I found out why, and that's because the advanced features (like individual fingerprints, individual codes, temporary codes, etc) were not supported. Once I found this out I immediately ordered the Aqara Hub M3. Once the M3 arrived & I set it up and got the U300 connected to it everything was great. So just be mindful of that. I'm going to deduct a half star because this was not in any of the literature I could find in the box or even in the app, I had to go digging to figure it out. Not a super seamless setup then for me & I want other to avoid the same frustration. I did run into an issue where if you were trying to shut the door from the outside you had to input your fingerprint or your code to get the knob to turn so you could shut the door because the striker would not push the latch in so that you could shut the door. It took 2 nights of me coming to see the front door was open to realize that others thought they had closed the door because of the loud thump you'd hear when the latch hit the striker but because it wouldn't push the latch in the door was open. So what I had to do was actually bend the striker plate just enough to where it would push on the latch and make it go in so you could easily close the door from the outside without putting in a code or your fingerprint. Super annoying, and this should have been done from the factory, another half star removed because of that. Rating: 4/5 Customization I touched on it during the Installation section but I'll expand on it here. When getting the U300 synced up with the M3 everything went super smooth. I was able to set codes for everyone in our household & set up a fingerprint for myself. This was all a breeze thanks to how intuitive the app is-once you have it set up with a full featured hub. Again, the manufacturer should explain to the user in a better way what hubs are and are not compatible with the advanced features in the app, on the box, in the listing, everywhere but they do not. So I want to keep making sure if you're reading this you know going in and have your eyes wide open to what you'll be spending to make it all work. But again, once synced to the M3 hub everything was available to me & the system worked flawlessly. Rating: 5/5 Conclusion The only major drawback are the no clear outlining of what hubs will and will not allow the advanced features to work, and then also me having to bend the striker plate. I don't know if others will have the latch-striker issue like I did, but I suspect at least some will have the not knowing why they can't use the advanced features issue. This technology isn't experiencing a bunch of adoption & I think it is due to how fragmented the segment is. I really hope Aqara can help to clear this up because their products (and we have numerous in our home) are exceptionally built, have been lasting us, and are products I recommend to friends, family & co-workers. I have steered numerous people to Aqara branded products because of how well built they are and how easy they are to set up. I think you will be extremely happy with the U300 if you give it a chance! I would recommend this to a friend
