Nice cams with Apple limits and so-so battery

I was all set to make the Arlo Essential system my new home security solution. I'm coming from the Nest ecosystem where I've dealt in the past with their lag, limitations of battery powered cameras, and high cost, all of which the Arlo system claims to deal with all of my concerns. I'm also somewhat moving away from the Google/Nest ecosystem in my home, so I hoped to use this starter pack as the first move away to bring my home security up to a spec that was more compatible with my Apple endpoint devices (and maybe HomeKit service!)
Design - The cameras are VERY well designed with a nice small footprint and an even more compact mounting system - Very small brackets install easily into the walls or trim of the house with 2 small self-tapping screws so pre-drilling and templates aren't necessary. There's a nice quick-release for taking them down to charge, and they're equipped with USB-C connections for easy access to recharge means throughout the house (There's also a nice USB-C cable included for the cameras for easy re-charging.) The cameras feature lights and a "siren" ability that I assume is used to scare off potential trespassers or burglars, but this seems to be of limited usefulness considering that most criminals are immune to this type of feature.
Video Quality: The video quality at night and during the day seems excellent. They fare a bit better than competing 1080p cameras, but the claim of "color night vision" is exaggerated, as most of the night footage was in fact greyscale/Infrared-based. Not a problem for my use case. Day images were super clear and both were able to be zoomed a fair bit and details observed (not as much so as some 4K cams I've tested).
Audio Quality: The audio was good, but laggy and delayed when sending audio through the devices. the audio pickup in videos where that's desired was good enough. Not a killer feature for my use case of having eyes around my house at every entry point.
Battery Life: These cameras are the "standard" battery powered models. I found in my testing some of my more frequently "visited" cameras only lasted just over a week and were already started to get below 50% capacity reported by the app. I also have the extended battery version which I will copy this review to separately.
Connectivity: The devices paired with my home WiFi 7 router/mesh well, which was a relief (these systems can struggle with mesh WiFi so this was a nice relief. I learned while researching the product that in order to have seamless/flawless connections there is an additional $99 base station that's not included that makes the system more reliably connected, and THEN offers Apple HomeKit compatibility. This was my biggest disappointment - Requiring a base station accessory to enable HomeKit was disappointing, as I was used to having Google Home integration with my home accessories already, and now I'm stuck with ONLY the proprietary app to get alerts, footage reviews, and recording reviews. This is a challenge for me to accept these are my primary camera system, and is the deal breaker for my own installation, but shouldn't deter you if you dont have an Apple ecosystem requirement. If you're happy using the free Arlo app for alerts and checking the cameras on phone and tablet, these work well. I did notice delays on my further-mounted cameras from the sides of the house struggling to connect for 20-30 seconds sometimes when trying to get live view quickly from the camera. I'm worried this is a known issue with Arlo without the base station.
Subscription/Software: The Arlo app is adequate. It's just Adequate. It lacks the interface polish of the rest of the brand (I expected something more akin to the project packaging and aesthetic but the app is drab grey with an appearance like it was originally written for an older version of iOS. The Android app is very similarly outdated-feeling. It worked well enough but just didnt feel like a 2025 competitor in this space. This was one of the reasons I would have loved to manage the cams from the Apple Home app and have that interface for interacting with them. I missed Google Home, which is saying something. The subscriptions are also pricey even at the standard tier, and the cameras are basically only live-monitoring with NO alerting without the $215/year subscription to the "Plus Multi-Camera" plan that is the only one that makes sense for 4 cameras.
All in all, this is an adequate monitoring solution based on some good technology, just a victim of no partnerships brought forward from Arlo, limited Apple compatibility, and a weak app UI/UX.

This review is on an Arlo - Essential 4-Camera Wireless 2K Security Camera (3rd Gen). This product comes with 4 cameras. I am already signed up to Arlo so setting up these 4 cameras was easy. I opened the Arlo app on my phone and selected + sign to add a new device. I selected cameras, then essential series and last, the 3rd generation with button on top. All you have to do is hold the button on top of the camera for 3 seconds and click next in the app and it will quickly find the camera. When you select the camera to be added you then connect it to your Wi-Fi. It already had my saved info so I didn't have to enter anything. It adds your camera to your account and asks you to name it. Then it will recognize that it has an update and immediately start to install it. The first update for me failed but I removed the camera and added it back and it said the update was successful. Then it will give you instructions on how to mount it. Installation with the mount was easy. The picture quality and color is good but not sharp. In the app you can choose to stop, mute, record, take a picture, use the mic to talk and turn on the security light which is bright. You can setup zones that you don't want the camera to watch. If a car was to go by on the street, it would normally pick it up, but you can set a zone for it to not monitor the street. It also comes with a free trial. This is a great combo package to order if you are wanting to monitor multiple views around your home.

This security camera bundle from Arlo is a powerhouse for home protection. Right out of the box, the setup was a breeze, no complicated wiring, just a quick Wi-Fi connection, and I was up and running in minutes. The 2K video quality is incredibly sharp, and the impressive zoom lets me catch even the smallest details, like license plates or facial features, with ease.
What really impressed me is how responsive the system is. I get instant alerts on my phone whenever motion is detected, and the live streaming is smooth and reliable. The color night vision is a game-changer; no more grainy black-and-white footage. Plus, the integrated spotlight and siren are great deterrents, and I love being able to control them remotely through the Arlo Secure App.
The noise-canceling two-way audio is surprisingly clear, making it easy to talk to delivery drivers or guests. And with four cameras included, I’ve got my entire property covered. The weather-resistant design and rechargeable batteries make this system perfect for outdoor use, rain or shine.
My only gripe? To keep recordings and access premium features like cloud storage and advanced detection, you’ll need a subscription after the 30-day trial. It’s a bit of a bummer, but honestly, the peace of mind and robust features make it worth considering.
If you're looking for a reliable, high-quality, and easy-to-use home security solution, this Arlo bundle is a fantastic investment.

I am a huge fan of the "G/N" brand, but their prices are atrosious and the innovation has stalled
When it came time to replace my aging cameras, I decided to try something different
First off, a four (4) pack for the price of 1? Count me in
The box looked great and while Arlo is not totally unknown, the brand was not on my initial pick list
Packaging and unboxing was uneventful. Everything was safe, secure and damage free
Instructions were what you expect with kinks to videos in case you need them. Honestly, if you are replacing another camera, you already got this
Being cord free was a huge bonus. You no longer need to mount near an electrical outlet, and you save yourself from unsightly cords running down a wall. You also free up sockets for things like holiday lighting and of course they become less visible for people that do not have good intentions
So gone do they work?
The 2K picture is awesome, and 4K is just overkill for such a small image
The nighttime view is clear with excellent imagery. The rest of features are consistently as good or better than the name brands (did I mention a fraction of the price)
Controls are simple and the app ties it all together
Of course you can use your favorite app to tie it into your home automation
They have not been long enough to have had to charge them, so I can not comment on the expectancy, but the battery usage against holding the charge has been great.
Overall, I and very happy with this purchase and would buy their products again and recommend to friends and family

Simple Setup, Sharp Footage—No Base Required

I’ve been using the Arlo Essential 4-camera bundle for a few weeks now, and overall, I’m impressed with its performance and simplicity. One of the standout features is that these cameras don’t require a base station, they connect directly to Wi-Fi, which makes setup incredibly fast and flexible. I was able to mount and sync all four cameras in under an hour using just the Arlo app. The 2K resolution is sharp and detailed, especially useful for identifying faces and license plates. Night vision works well, and the built-in spotlight adds an extra layer of security. I also appreciate the smart motion detection—it reliably distinguishes between people, vehicles, and animals, reducing false alerts.
Battery life has been solid so far, though I’d recommend checking signal strength at each mounting location since Wi-Fi performance can affect battery drain. The cameras are weather-resistant, and I’ve had no issues with outdoor placement even during heavy rain.
One thing to note: while the cameras work great without a hub, you’ll need a subscription to unlock features like cloud recording and advanced object detection after the trial period ends. Still, for a wire-free, high-resolution system that skips the hassle of a base station, this Arlo setup delivers excellent value.

Great pack of 2k HD indoor/outdoor cameras. These are battery powered but you can order solar panels to run these 24/7 without needing to charge them, they also sell optional mounts for gutters and other situations. I was able to mount these to my gutters without needing to drill a single hole, I glued the solar panel to a shingle with construction adhesive. I love the quality and shape of Arlo's cameras. You can also buy silicon sleeves to camouflage the cameras. Download the Arlo app, set up your cameras to your wifi and instantly start recording to the cloud. Works with Alexa and Google. You can hear and talk through the cameras as well. They have a small led light and pick up motion, the light isn't amazing but does help. You can set a siren to go off as well, to hopefully scare off intruders. The minimalist plan is free but doesn't have many features, you can upgrade to a basic plan for $18 a month which is a great deal. This kit comes with the cameras, wall or ceiling mounts, a charging cable and a yard sign. Nice, great quality camera set.

I was looking for some cameras for my house more than anything I needed some for when my kids are outsides and my pets. These Arlo cameras do not disappoint very easy to install and once up and running they are breeze to set up and use.
I only have two complaints both are minor and not deal breakers I don’t like that the mount is affixed the camera I know that is easier because some can’t take it off the mount but then I have to use it on that mount specifically. My other issue was getting the cameras activated my phone would detect it but it would constantly fail to activate took several minutes and several tries. Once they were activated they worked great and had no issues.
The clarity on the picture is great and the night vision also looks very good I appreciate the flood light also.
Overall these are super solid cameras that you can set pretty much anywhere in your house they can get a so go signal.
I would highly recommend these cameras to anyone looking to add some to their house.

This is a great value pack if you already have the Arlo system like me. This 4 pack is reasonably-priced, and makes sure that all my home blind spots are covered. Like other Arlo cameras, this is made of good quality. The casing is made of lighter materials but they are not cheap and not flimsy at all.
Set up is a little tough as I had to set up each one—yes, one set up four times. The tough part is, each camera set up took at least 2 attempts, with one camera even reaching 6 times to connect. One even required me to reset set up. Tip, don’t let the firmware update in the background—keep it on-screen. Yes, each one requires a firmware too, so I would say 45 minutes just to connect all cameras to the app.
After that, it is easy to operate, especially that I am familiar with the Arlo system. Since it connects directly to wifi, it makes it simpler to connect—if not for the extended time needed to put things together. Camera widgets are easily added to my Google Home dashboard, while each was easily labelled and recognized in my home dashboard. It does take time to load in the Home app, even though I have really fast internet at home. In the Arlo app though, the delay is reasonable and the feed is pretty helpful. This is available because of the subscription, so if you do not like to pay, you can still see videos live without recording.
There is some battery management that I had to do—the battery lasts long, but drains fast that I had to make sure I tweak options like night vision option settings and motion sensitivity. I also had to make sure I use the app’s activity detection zones to minimize notification noise and battery drain. Believe me, with 4 more cameras to your system, you will not have enough time to go through all activity in your feed if you do not track only those that matter.
Video is good, as expected though there is some softness indoors. And the specific notifications like person or animal labels help a lot.
For the price I think it is a good buy—perhaps to cover what you will pay in subscription especially if you want to track round-the-clock protection like me.

I really like the Arlo Cameras. They are super easy to connect to the app. I have used Arlo cameras in the past but these are even better than the old ones.
They suggest charging them first so they are fully charged when you install them. I don’t know how long they will last on a charge, but it will depend on a lot of things. How often they are activated, if the lights are activated, how cold it is, etc… My old Arlo cameras would easily last a couple months on a charge. I’m looking forward to seeing how long these last on a charge.
From the app, when you go to devices, it will give you a static picture of the last time it recorded activity. It also displays the name of the camera. I named mine front of house and the direction it is facing. You can see the signal strength, battery state of charge as well as other functions.
The cameras have a built in motion activated spotlight, an emergency siren and 2 way audio.
In the bottom of the app there is a dashboard, feed, emergency, devices and routines section. The dashboard allows you to set it as arm away, arm home or standby. The feed section will record the activity and keep a log of activity. The emergency section will allow you to activate the siren. You can set it up to call someone when you activate the siren. Devices will show you the static photo of the last activity. You can press the play icon in the middle of the photo and it will show a live feed from the camera.
Under Routines, there are Modes which will allow you to set up arm away, arm home, and standby routines. There is also Automations which will allow you to set up schedules or Arrive/Leave automations.
I like just getting the alerts for when there is activity. I think Arlo is a solid product. With previous cameras you had to have a base. The new cameras no longer require a base. That makes them even easier to use.
If you are looking for a wireless camera system, I think you would be happy with the Arlo product.

Pricy but may outshine commercial systems

This is a professional grade system and may not be for everyone, it's a pricy system that will integrate well in a commercial application. There is no place to add a usb or sd card so a monthly subscription is necessary which can be quite pricy. But if you are in the Arlo echo system already with there wide array of products then you should already be familiar with the cost attached to there products.
There is no need for a hub or router for the Essential 3rd gen series you only need a strong wi-fi signal to make this work well. I installed a camera in the back yard to give me a full view of our home about 25-35 feet and the clarity was superb even using the color nite vision mode 2k is deffinatly a plus at this distance.
You can setup the camera to turn on spot light or not, some may use the spot light feature as a deterrent for unwanted guests, but to surprise capture you may want this feature turned off.
This system sets up easy with the app you scan the QR code and it seamlessly walks you through the setup process.
This system is pro-like in features maybe for a small or large business start up where cost maybe an object. You can start with the essential system and grow into there home of other products. So I consider this a win-win.

We got this Arlo Outdoor 2k Camera Bundle a few days ago and we are quite happy with them. Set up was very quick and easy. The most time consuming part was just getting the cameras all charged up. Once that was done I just installed the app, created an account, and linked the cameras. Once that was done it was time to install the mounts and hang the cameras. The way these cameras mount is well designed and super easy to attach and detach the cameras once the mount is set. Fine tuning the direction the camera faces once mounted was also easy and once set it seems to stay in position very well.
Once it’s all set up we were able to enjoy full yard coverage with a very easy to use app. The motion detection can tell when it’s a human, animal (hit and miss on the chickens but spots dogs and cats consistently). The quality of the picture is good. Probably the weakest feature as far as quality is the speaker. You can speak thru the app to any of the cameras. The quality of the audio is on the lower end, but still intelligible. Batteries seem to be holding the charge great so far. It also includes a nice yard sign showing your property is protected by cameras. All in all I am very happy with this camera system. If I knew someone looking for an outdoor wireless camera system I would absolutely recommend them to a friend.

This is basically the same as buying 4 Arlo Essential cameras with an included warning sign. There are also 4 mounting brackets and a charging cord. You will need to have the Arlo app downloaded. I already had this because I have an Arlo security system and other cameras. I just had to add each of the 4 camera individually, then also add them as widgets to the main screen tab. You can also, do camera controls and views all from the app. Pairing the cameras were very easy and much simpler than other brand cameras I have paired. Arlo has been the simplest so far. Once charged and paired, the swivel mount is already part of the camera body. One just needs to install this mount, and the camera clicks into place. It can then be adjusted to focus where you want to monitor. Set up and mounting has really been thought through and is extremely intuitive. The cameras load quickly once the app is opened, and quality is rated at 2k, and is more than acceptable. You have options for color night view, siren and spot light. I did not find the night vision view that great, nor the spot light. I am sure if it came on it would at least get some attention, but did not make the camera view any better. Battery life seems good although I have not had these long enough to tell. After 4 days, i see 98% remaining. Each camera comes with a 30day subscription for cloud storage and some other enhancements. All in all, I find these cameras well thought out, very functional, and useful. I have 3 mounted outside and one in the garage.
