Marginal Improvement from Arlo Pro 1

    |
    Posted .

Bought the Arlo Pro 720P system 2 months ago and to my dismay the release of the Arlo Pro 2 1080P. I bought the 2 camera combo to add on my current system. During the day you can see the 1080 is better. Night vision is considerably worst than the 720P unit. So if you have the 720p system and thinking about upgrading, I would not buy cameras to replace what you have, but I would buy to add on if you need to. If you need to buy a net new system, I would spend the extra coin and get the 1080. Good luck!

Bought originally a 4-camera system in 9-2019 and installed them without too many problems. Expanded later-on my installation with this 2-camera system to complete a whole house outside perimeter protection. I did installed a strong Wi-Fi network, to optimize the multi-camera performances. I gave only a 4-star rating to the camera-system due to the following: MUST have the cameras hard-wired, to fully utilize all the features. The Solar panels have toooooo short "custom cables". Also the Solar Panels are a VERY poor performing option...NOT recommended.. After more than a year in service, all cameras are still working flawlessly.

Very happy with this purchase. The Arlo Pro 2 cameras are functioning well inside and outside the home. The phone app synched with the cameras easily. I am considering purchasing an subscription to utilize the cameras more fully.

Best Camera Solution I've ever seen!

    Pros mentioned:
    Video quality

I want to start off by saying I've played with a lot of these Wi-Fi Camera's which is why I can make the bold claim in my Summary. Starting with what you get it's pretty straight forward. Two camera's with two mounts to match. Arlo base station with power cable and a cute sticker to warn others you have a camera system. When it comes to the base station please keep in mind two things. First, you will need to have it hooked up with a direct ethernet so if you router only supports one extra free plug which your using that may be a problem. Second, if your like me and your tired of your computer room getting more little lights that don't turn off than you will be slightly annoyed when you see the three new lights to join the family. Once we get into performance is where this unit shines. I have had problems with just estabilishing a connection to other Wi-Fi camera's to the point where I gave them away since the manufacturers wouldn't help me. Arlo DOES NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM! Arlo takes a few seconds, maybe ten, to get you into the live view and see what the alert is telling you. Which brings me to something you will need to adjust immediatly the alerts. I put this in my garage and front door and it goes off like crazy. The worst part is that it's naturally set up to send you emails too so first day I set it up I had 28 emails of Arlo has detected motion and my phone just beeping like crazy. Video quality is great at 1080p and the ability to talk through the camera to talk to delivery guys is amazing. The last thing that I find amazing about this product is the FREE SERVICE. Yes, you heard me right FREE for up to five camera's with 7 day recording. If you do need more cameras for your house than yes you will have to pay but that's a great deal especially when your just starting out and trying to find the best camera for you. Simply put everyone I recommend the Arlo to you and your friends and family. I personally love it enough to where I want to go buy more and maybe get a sking to help hide them which they do sell here or on Arlo's own website. Hope this helps and thanks for reading my review.

I regret buying this. It's hardly weatherproof. I have it connected to an outdoor outlet via USB weathersealed cable and connection still got rusty! It was working fine a few weeks in this form, but I've been getting charging fault errors lately and now the front camera won't charge at all! Took it down and saw that the USB port has rusted! It still seems to work for recording but now just won't charge. Brought it inside to clean and charge, but won't charge at all through USB. Now I'll have to invest in more batteries or a battery charger. I spent a great deal of time routing the cable carefully along the house to the outdoor GFCI in-use outlet I specifically installed for this purpose, all for nothing. The second camera seems fine considering it's just battery powered. They also claim three to six months of battery life. That's not even remotely close to what you will realistically get. I barely got five weeks and it's just me coming in and out of my house from work and walking my dog several times a day for a few seconds in camera time. Find another solution. Unfortunately, too late for me to return, so I'm stuck with it, but you don't have to be. Buy something else. You have been warned.

Complaints first. -cant connect to regular wifi, can only use their hub. -the base station's wifi range isn't great -cameras can't roam between multiple base stations, have to be set to a specific one. -batteries last a few weeks, lost of trips to change batteries out. -**** easily stolen by neighborhood vandals (lost 2 so far) The good portable, easy to mount, gives you a dynamic security coverage. option for solar power so you don't have to swap batteries. image quality pretty reasonable. I would recommend these to SUPPLEMENT a wired security offering or if you planned to also purchase the solar charger kit.

A good system worth the $ when it's on sale. No subscription needed for the basic functionality which is all you really need. Decent range from the hub. Has SATA port for hard copy backups, though the size it's recognizes is limited. The one major drawback to this system is battery life. Having to get the ladder out, charging, and readjusting the cameras every 60 to 90 days sucks. I highly recommend running USB cables to the camera if possible.

Went in for the Arlo = Pro 2 3 camera Indoor/Outdoor Wireless, but the salesman said that the only difference was this one gave you 4 cameras instead of 3. WRONG... you got 4 cameras, but instead of permanent attachments for each one, you were only given one. NEED at least 3 for outdoors. Where you would have to unscrew to charge, they gave magnetic cameras to attachments. Problem is the cameras can easily be taken down and stolen. Too many have told us not to get the magnetic ones. The magnetic would be nice if dishonest people didn't exist or the price to replace this item wasn't so much. Otherwise the reason for wanting this particular one, was because the unit itself has been raved about. If you only require 1 outdoor unit, then it's for you!

This was a great set to get for our use. I have had wireless IP cameras for years, but I wanted to get higher resolution cameras. I got a set for my daughter and later, purchase this set for myself. A couple of cautions - I have cinder block walls and my reception is right at the edge of what the works. (Same issue with the wireless IP cameras). Battery life is very good with a couple of exceptions. If it is pointed at something that is blowing in the wind - your battery will only last a week at best. Others I have they have gone a month or more. The mask that you can apply to get around this issue only works if it is connected to power. So caution if you have this situation. The battery life depends on how busy it is - as in my daughters case - the prefect location to watch who come to the font door also get traffic from the local school. Her solution was to buy 2 extra batteries (off brand) and just replace it ever 10 days. It is in a very accessible spot. The only feature I would really love to add is a "pause the camera" for XX hours so I don't waste battery when outside working.

    Love this setup!

    Set up

I've used the Arlo (non-pro-non-2) for over a year now. I've gone through 24-ish batteries (costing ~ $17 for 12x CR123A batteries). The new Arlo Pro 2 (I'll call AP2) is quite the step-up. First off, rechargeable batteries (yay!). Next, two-way audio (woah!). There's also a Continuous Recording feature, however the cameras need a permanent outside AC Power Source ... that I can't provide, so I don't have any input on that one. With previous Arlo configuration experience, the setup was a snap ... hit the button on the base station, hit the sync buttons on the camera and you're off. The Arlo App is OK -- it hasn't really evolved in the time I've had the original Arlo, so it could use a refresh. Configuring different "Armed" states is fine but again, the App is a little buggy when it comes to 'don't alert me or email me, just record' -- isn't there in some instances, but it is there in others (such as: you can't save the change for one option, but you can for others). Though, once you're in, rename the camera for where it is; for example, I use my address + cardinal direction of the camera - just in case. I'm able to set actions based on movement or sound, from different cameras; there's even a 'trigger the base station alarm' result, should there be activity in an area that there shouldn't be. Right now, I have one AP2 mounted to a NETGEAR mount (~$25 to buy) and one on the included magnetic half-globe, screwed into a few 1x4s to make a right angle to mount the magnet - these work just fine for me. I also have an original Arlo running without issue, along side the new ones (backward compatibility rejoice!). All in all, this is fantastic. The microphone is fantastic for catching conversations and even found that the UPS guy doesn't ring my bell, he just yells "UPS!" To recommend this would be an understatement - I guess it's off to buy the solar panel (for continuous charging, thus not likely continuous recording) now!

Amazing picture! Easy to use and to set up. I only have one issue...the batteries do not last very long! These are motion activated and they are extremely sensitive! If a shadow from a cloud crosses into the camera view, it activates as motion! I have turned the sensitivity down as low as it goes on all 6 cameras and they still activate for apparently no reason! I have had to re-charge the batteries to ALL 6 cameras twice now in a 4 month period.....wish that they would last at least 4 months before re-charge.

    The best so far

This security set is truly 100% Wire-Free. The only wires is the power cord from the home system which goes close to your modem for power. Other than that there is no plugging anything in. It’s wayyyyyyy more versatile this way. Love it. I have yet to really get a truly 1080p HD picture or video and I’m unsure how to get it however, the quality of pic and vid i currently get is worth it. I can clearly see what i need to see with detail in image and color. I really like the Rechargeable camera batteries because they last months. (Depending on your set up, recording, system preferences)i do wish for the kit that they included the actual dual recharging dock. That’s another $30 but completely necessary to reuse the provided batteries. This system works Wire-Free or Plugged In, your choice. if you are like me you want to have one camera in a high traffic area inside and one outside. I was a little worried that it might get wet but since these cameras are Weather-Resistant, i don’t worry as much. The humid weather though tends to fog the focus. All you need to do is wipe the front of the camera with a small dab of rainX. Fog free, no more droplets of water and this baby is good to go, no matter where you put it outside. Unless you have devilish squirrels. I’ve had wayyyyyy too much fun scaring my hubby with the 2-Way Audio via my arlo app. The audio is clear. I also demand my dog get off the couch randomly to let him know I’m the boss. I can hear the slightest noise also. Great audio. Night Vision is cool. Things turn black and white but the image is still clear. thankful for the Free Cloud Recordings, some things i just want to keep until i have time to move them elsewhere. You also have Local Backup Storage. if you are fancy then you will relish at the notion of arlo Working with Amazon Alexa. All in all, i really like this System.

First I must say that I own a Ring video doorbell and subscribe to Xfinity Home security with 1 camera. When I got this camera system I really wanted to have something set up in my backyard and a way to check in on my dogs for when we leave them home alone. Setting up these cameras was very easy, I think there was only one issue when setting up but it was not a big deal. I had everything up and running in about 15 minutes or so. Once set up you must go into the settings and adjust the alerts. By default it set up a motion alert for every little thing that passes, including when you first try to place it and adjust it, then every time something passes it. I just shut the notifications off completely. Now I can easily check in on my precious fur babies and even talk to them via the 2 way communication built into the camera. I highly recommend this system, I actually love it.

Love the wireless theory. But in practice it’s not reliable. Need subscription to save files but I store them on a USB drive so I’m glad and surprised they even offered that on the HUB. Ended up having to hardwire the power cords because battery kept dying and charging it was a major hassle.

Outstanding security cameras for home use

    |

    Pros mentioned:
Ease of use, For home use, Safety

I was looking for a security system for my home. It is an old townhome, and running cables in this house is very difficult to impossible, depending on the location. A friend has this system in his house and gave me a demo using his smartphone app. I was amazed at the quality of the video, and the fact that the batteries last so long. I bought the 4-camera 1080p system. The system came with 1 outside mount and 4 magnet mounts. I purchased 2 additional outside mounts for the 3 cameras exposed to wind and people. The mounts are rugged and hold the cameras securely, even in windy conditions. The camera in an enclosed and covered patio was mounted with the magnetic mounts. That install was super easy. The daytime video image is outstanding. it is very clear, and zooming in continues to be very clear. The night-vision is also very clear. I did have trouble with 1 camera with night vision because I mounted to close to the eave and the eave was reflecting the IR back in the camera. The next day I relocated the camera down 2", and the next night the image was very clear. Setup was very easy, but there was one confusing part. When the hub was doing updates, it appeared that it was hung up when in fact it was only rebooting itself. So if the hub needs to be updated (which is completely automatic), just leave it alone and let it do its thing. Of course, in all fairness, if I had read the instructions, I would have been able to tell what was going on with the LEDs. The smartphone app is very intuitive and gives you complete control of your system. Unlike some reviews I have read, the app does not drain my smartphone any quicker than any other apps. I use my phone heavily, and usually, have 15 hour days during the week, and I get the same battery usage with this app as I did before installing it. The app is also very responsive, and the camera delay is much smaller than other camera apps I have used in the past. For the one reviewer that has bad night-vision; I would suggest relocating or replacing that camera. I see the image you posted, and it is not the same quality I am getting. It could be a bad camera, or it could be the two lights in the room. I would be curious to see the image if those lights were off. I did look at other systems, especially the Nest and the Ring. The ring was a bit too bulky for me, and not having any free cloud space was a downside. I already have a few Nest components, so I looked at that cameras a well. However, it is a wired-only solution, so it wouldn't work for me. I love my Arlo system; for me it was definitely the right choice. I highly recommend this camera system for a home. It might not be the right solution for a business though depending on your needs. At my business, we needed on-site NVR, cloud storage in case the NVR is stolen, 16 cameras with PTZ, 1080P with night vision, and a constant video stream. But for my home, I couldn't be happier.

    For home use

I bought 2 Arlo Pro 2 cameras because I was mislead into believing that they were able to integrate seamlessly into my Google (Nest) Home ecosystem. The setup was quick, the Arlo app works as intended, but IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE STREAM ON ANY GOOGLE HOME ASSITANT PRODUCT. This is frustrating because I have the Google Home Hub, a Google Nest Hub Max and Chromecast on my TV. ---------------- VOICE: "Hey google, stream _camera name_ on _device name_" --> "Sorry, it seems the camera can't be streramed". HOME APP: The cameras show up at Google Home app, but tap --> "Not responding" (black screen). ---------------- I did my research, googled and this seems to be a COMMON PROBLEM FOR GOOGLE HOME PRODUCTS USERS on all forums since 2018... So, TAKE NOTE BEFORE YOU CHOOSE YOUR CAM.
