Best camera I’ve found, but a few caveats

I purchased the white three-camera set of Arlo 5S Pro cameras with spare batteries and a charger 5-15-24. They replace some 18-month-old Eufy 2C Pro units with rapidly diminishing capability. The Arlo setup was difficult until my base unit arrived, and then it was a snap. Outside of the issue of where to store video, I have these observations: 1) the clarity of the Arlo cameras is far superior to Eufy. 2) Once you have figured out how to reach folks on the phone at Arlo getting help seemed OK. They constantly follow up. 3) the Arlo software is balky, but you can, indeed, selectively delete multiple clips via the phone app by swiping left-to-right on one, then marking those you want to ditch. Otherwise, you are left having to bulk delete all your recordings you do not save. My plan is to download what I want to keep permanently into my IOS photos, then delete either as marked blocks on the phone or all unsaved. It just takes some getting used. Finally … 4) understand the following — the 3-unit package deal is a special purchase from Arlo for Best Buy. It comes only with the “theft proof/resistant base.” If you want another base, you are out of luck. I was able to disassemble the unit (11/16 deep socket extracts the mounting nut) but standard round threaded mounting posts appear not to work with this special-buy unit. These are white. If you want black, you must pay extra. Knowing now how to disassemble the base from the housing, I am going to buy some Pro 4 silicone covers for my new cameras for weatherproofing (I hope) and making them blend in to the dark wood of my townhouse where these will be mounted. As for the base, rather than buying expensive black ones from Arlo, a little spray paint ought to do the trick. I notice that Arlo is now dropping the price on black 5S cameras so they may get down to near what BB is charging, but you would also need to buy the charger and spare battery/ies. I have not had these long enough to comment on the battery life, but having a charger and the ability to make a quick change out helps. I will have one camera as a spare as I will use the others to monitor the front and rear of my townhouse. I will later be exploring the solor charger or hard-wired power.

Easy setup. Clear picture. Long battery life. Only downside is the mount. I wish it allowed for the Arlo to move around a bit more prior to tightening the holder. You can only mount flat against a wall.

The all-new Arlo Pro 5S 2K wireless camera delivers a sharp, detailed picture with a 160-degree view, and the newly updated app allows you to set specific settings that should help with the camera's overall functionality. Pros: Setup Alerts Resolution/Video Quality Updated App for (more) Features Cons: Stand Alerts within the app Out of the box, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K was easy to set up. I plugged the camera in to charge (for an hour) to get a full charge. Since I already own the Arlo app and Home Station, it was easy to pair/sync up the camera to my already home network. The app literally walks you through the entire process. If you do not own the app, you will need to download the Arlo Home app from the Play or Apple store. Although you do not necessarily need the Home Station (which allows you to insert a memory card for local video storage), you can subscribe to cloud storage, which, for five cameras, its $12.99 a month for up to thirty-days of captured recordings (you can save these recordings as well so they do not automatically delete). What I enjoyed with the new Arlo Pro 5S 2K camera is setting up the alert settings. With the new app, I am able to configure the sensitivity levels of motion detection, as well as set activity zones for specific recording areas. I found this to be an improvement over the old Arlo Home app because other cameras I have owned were picking up too much in the recordings, and ultimately, their battery died quicker. Additionally, newer settings allow the user to select Color (new) or Black and Whie night vision. Still, you are able to set up the volume level for the microphone, as well as audio sensitivity settings. Video quality for the Arlo Pro 5S 2K is incredible. I found, especially at night, the video quality to be clear on the "Best video" settings. Keep in mind that if you select a battery saver or "optimized," etc., the quality is not as good, and I believe the resolution suffers. Also, the newer 160 degree view provides a wider lens to capture moments even further than before. Additionally, the quality of the picture was clear, precise, and with HDR, colors were vibrant. Again, the updated app allows you to take control of the camera settings further than before. The new home screen within the app allows you to set up widgets (quick access) to your cameras, as well as "arming" routines (more on this in a moment). Additionally, when set up correctly and with a paid subscription, you can set up emergency services (if you detect something suspicious, you can select "call emergency"). One of the issues I had with the app was the stand that comes with it. Over time, if you are removing the camera to charge it, the threading and ball movement (although great when setting up the camera initially) can become loose/stripped over time, and your camera will eventually tip or lower on its own. I wish Arlo built a better stand for this purpose (especially because it is outdoors), or they went back to their magnetic bases. Two, although not entirely related to the camera itself, one of the settings within the app may or may not give you alerts. I found out (from an Arlo agent) that specific "armed" settings may cause the cameras to not send notifications/record events. For instance, if the app is set to "standby" nothing will record. In "arm home" mode, only some movement is recorded. Finally, "Arm away," will record all events that take place around your recording areas. When setting up, be advised that your cameras may not record unless the armed feature is set a certain way. Overall, the Arlo Pro 5S 2K provides a clear picture during the day and night. The app has several new features to get the most out of the Pro 5S 2K, and setup was easy.

I am a fan of this brand of camera. I bought my first set of an earlier model in 2016, and I must admit, after trying a few other brands, the app for these is one of the better UIs for browsing events. I can scroll back through all the clips for 30 days (I have that level of subscription). The option to select a date on a calendar vs just scrolling up for minutes is handy too, as I can quickly go to a specific date. The clarity is very good on these (2K) and I like the "color night vision" option. I bought some of the solar panels in conjunction with these to keep the batteries fully charged as well as extra batteries and chargers to use in the 3 I do not have solar panels hooked to. Now, in winter, the batteries drain faster due to the temps (these are litium-ion after all), but they usually last me 5-6 days with LOTS of activations over 24 hours. My one in a less active area lasts 9-10 days in cold temps. Warm temps the solar ones have been recharged all summer and I only replace the others maybe once every 2-3 weeks. If I had to criticize one thing about these, it's the way to release the camera to swap the battery. You use a small allen wrench to turn a screw 1/4 turn and it releases a catch that is supposed to partially eject the camera maybe 1/2" or so so you can pull it out by hand. I have 2 that take me tapping on the side of the housing until it slides out enough so I can use my finger nails to pull it out. I plan on trying some silicon dry lube the next time I replace the batteries in those to see if that helps. I also had an issue with 1 of the cameras getting some moisture in the housing, but I took it down for a week and left it in the house and it dried out. When I put it back out, I used a piece of pipe insulation over the top and slid the edge out about 1/2" past the front of the lense to keep rain off that area and it has worked fine since. I planned on buying a few of those silicon birdhouse covers for them to give them all that same lip to cover the front edge. The other 5 have not had any issues however. Arlo also can be integrated with scripts on IFTTT.com to help automate some things too. Things like texting you an alert when a battery is low, linking the cameras to your Alexa device to tell it to arm/disarm the cameras,or set up a geo-fence so when you leave home, it automatically activates the cameras. The company has provided the site a few applets for use.

Great Camera, Strong Battery, But Not Perfect

This is a great security camera. I use it to monitor our patio, which has a sidewalk on the other side. With the Arlo software, I am able to map out a zone that does not include the sidewalk, thus avoiding alerts every time someone walks by. I ended up ordering a second battery and charger so that it relatively easy to swap on the low battery for a fully charged battery. While I am on the 30-day free trial of the Arlo service, I plan on paying the monthly subscription for all the benefits it brings. The Pros: Excellent video quality; Long lasting battery (about 4 weeks with power management set to "Optimized". The Cons: Confusing app, which took a couple of days of trial-and-error to get the settings correct; As mentioned with other reviews, there is a long delay between an alert situation being detected and the notification actually arriving at my phone (this is undrestandable); Lack of a desktop widget that allows me to change from "Arm" mode to "Standyby" mode on my Android devices...it isn't rocket science!

Great for peace of mind. These cameras have amazing quality and help me keep an eye on my property while I’m away. I’m thankful I don’t have to have a hub or anything, and it was an easy setup thanks to the Arlo app. The recognition features are also helpful to let me name cars and people to have more detailed notification. I wish the battery life was better since I’m sometimes away for months at a time, but they still hold up well. And the extra battery and charging station is a big plus. I wish some of the advanced features didn’t require a subscription but that’s not a huge issue. I’m paying for the annual plan anyways but do be aware that you can’t really use the recognition features, cloud storage, or defined motion zones without the subscription. Though you can use motion zones if you have AC power to the camera. Overall, they are great cameras and good quality, but I’m leaving off a star just for the somewhat shorter battery life and subscription requirement. They should offer an XL battery option similar to the Arlo Essential XL cameras.

This is my second purchase of the Arlo Pro 5S system. After using it for over a year, I continue to be impressed by the quality and ease of use. They are a breeze to set up and the battery lasts about 6-8 months, which is great! The clarity of the video is fantastic, even in low light. The sowtware is simple to use, very easy to set up and always alerts when something passes within view. The only small issue is when there are very strong winds, but that is more the effect of my placing it on a gutter mount that may be too flimsy. I would choose Arlo over any of the other non-wired systems the price range.

This camera is extremely clear. I can see a crystal clear picture down my driveway and across the street. At night I like the spotlight option and being able to turn it off/on. My backyard is extremely dark so even though the night option works in some parts of my yard, but the nightlight makes viewing much easier.

My home is my biggest investment and where my family and I take refuge in a busy crazy world....It blows my mind that there are people in this day and age that do not have cameras that allow them to keep an eye on their home! We have Arlo cameras both inside and outside.  The cameras are in the living room and hallways to make sure to catch any would be intruders on video.  It is also super useful if my alarm goes off for any reason or if I can't recall if I shut the garage door... within seconds I have eyes on the inside and outside of my home!  I also love knowing who's driving by my house, If packages have been delivered or what wild animals have traversed my lawn and driveway in the middle of the night!  So handy!!!  PLus the huge deterrent to porch pirates and burglars!!! Having said all that, you can bet I have done my homework and there is no one doing it better than Arlo. I have 6 Arlo cameras plus the doorbell but this is my first pro series.  I was pretty excited to get my hands on the PRO 5S 2K and compare it to the essential and essential XL's I have.  The first thing I noticed was the Magnet charger system and that the battery in the Pro is removable and you can buy a battery charger and have batteries on standby.  I like that.  The new Pro5S 2K can hot-swap the batteries and keep it in the game.  If you don't hot swap the batteries you will need to charge for a while before putting the camera back up.  If you place the camera outside the solar panel is a must must-have.  Two of my other Arlo cameras that are outside have the panels and it's so awesome.  They are 100 percent charged and I never have to mess with them.  And they have held up through wicked cold winters and scorching summer days not to mention rain, wind and snow! Back to the Pro 5S... The first thing I noticed about the Pro 5S 2K is the crystal clear picture and color night vision is awesome!  Two-way communication, spot light and siren... really allows me to reach and stay connected to my house in a very practical and useful way! It connects fast with my mesh wifi.  The peace of mind and comfort of knowing I am informed of what is happening at my house at all times is priceless.   So talking about being informed... the APP.  At first, I was was a little upset that it forced me to upgrade my app once I installed the Pro 5S 2K.  If I was building my system from scratch I would have never known any different and would have been wowed by the ease and friendly intuitive interface that the Arlo app has.  But I was not building from scratch.  I had multiple cameras and had all the preferences set up and routines and it was all gone with the upgrade.  So after a day or two of reassigning all the preferences and getting to know the new interface and the changes from the old app to the new...My frustration eased into an honest appreciation of the work that Arlo put into it.  It's a really amazing app that really enhances the product and brings out the usefulness of the amazing optics and AI that alerts you to people or vehicles or animals that the camera catches.  It emails me a screen grab and an alert to my email.  Very cool and useful...At a quick glance of my phone, I can decide to pull up the cam or not based on the email alert!  You can also set up a text alert if you want.  You can also set the sensitivity of the motion as well so you don't get too many alerts!   Overall, Arlo makes a great product that works!!!  Solid builds and even more importantly an awesome app that delivers the info and peace of mind knowing that My house and loved ones are safe...and my packages too!! You cannot go wrong and in this day and age....YOU NEED THIS PRODUCT!

Reliable with a subscription, not for Apple users

I'm already using older (End of Life as per Arlo) Pro and Pro 2 cameras that served me well. These cameras connect to a base station and the base station has an USB drive serving as local storage. Arlo's cloud offering for these cameras provided 7-day recording and they integrate with HomeKit as well as Alexa and Google Home and SmartThings. These cameras don't support Apple's Secure Video storage but otherwise works for my needs. The Pro 5S camera improves in almost every way. The hardware specs are great: - Integrated spotlight - Selectable B/W or Color night vision (Color uses the spotlight). - Can be used with no base station, supports 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz Wi-Fi, and direct connection to Arlo's Alarm panel. - 2K recording and streaming. - Built-in Siren. - Package, Person and Animal detection, but only with a subscription. - 2-Way audio via the Arlo app and some integrations. However, after dealing with Arlo's overseas support for about a week, someone in escalation support realized that these cameras, unlike their end-of-life sibilings, do not support HomeKit. This implies no Apple TV support, and anyone in the family that would like access to the camera's livestream needs to install the Arlo app, which is not simple because it requires two factor authentication tied to the main user, meaning I need to sign in anybody that needs to use it. They cannot access the feed from the Apple Home app from their phones nor Apple watches. They do however integrate with Amazon's Alexa and the integration works a lot quicker than with the older cameras. We have some Amazon Echos with screens through the house and it works well. It also works with SmartThings, Google Home and IFTTT integrations (Use it to turn lights on when the camera detects movement). These cameras do not support any type of recording without subscription, except for the local recording to USB on the base station (that I happened to already have), but that local recording does not work through the app. I have to access them disconnecting the USB drive and finding the recording on the computer. Useful for emergencies but hardly convenient. These cameras are designed to be used with an active subscription. This is why it comes with a 30-day trial of their subscription, because they're not very useful without it. It's worth it if one buys into Arlo's security packages and uses their alarm panel, which works better with their top tier subscription (Yes there are different subscription plans). Battery life is good for 3 to 4 months. There's an optional solar panel for these and Arlo offers additional mounts including magnetic and ceiling mounts, as well as white, black and camo enclosures. The cameras are waterproof even when connected to power. They use a magnetic connector that works very well. If using a permanent mount, one can leave the enclosure attached to the mount and remove the camera body with a push of a button. The battery is nested inside. Very simple to change the battery, and much better than older models. Overall, great cameras if an Arlo subscription is good for you and you're not relying on Apple's offerings.

The Arlo Pro 5S 2K Indoor/Outdoor Wire Free Spotlight Security camera is a solid security camera, it was easy to configure with the Arlo Secure App, and it integrated well with our older Arlo doorbell device. It comes with decent battery life, great video quality for extra details and good floodlight for those dark nights. As a wire free device, it can be installed anywhere there is access to Wi-Fi. We have it installed outdoors, and it’s been working fine this short time we’ve had it. We’ve been able to access and configure it through the Arlos Secure App with no issues, and it’s been able to detect movement, light up, record, and send notifications (as expected/configured.) You’d need to buy a subscription, if you don’t already have, or may need to update/upgrade it, if you already have one, to have access to cloud storage and useful features provided by this camera. I got a 30-day trial period for this device (the 30-day trial period seems standard), so after that I’ll need to upgrade my plan. It doesn’t have local storage to store videos/pictures, so take that into consideration when deciding to buy this and opt for one of the Arlo subscription plans. No device is perfect, but I think this one is close to a 5-star rating. - Pros: Wire free, easy configuration, great video quality, indoor/outdoor use, decent battery life. - Cons: no local storage, spotlight not too bright. >> Note for existing Arlo device owners. Prior to owning the Arlo Pro 5S 2K Camera, I already had an Arlo Essential Video Doorbell Wired device (2020 model) installed and set with a monthly subscription plan. When adding my Arlo 5S 2K Camera, I was asked to upgrade to the new Arlo Secure App, and in doing so, I was welcomed with a warning that my existing (old) Arlo Doorbell was “not currently supported.” There was a note to have all the devices powered and running the latest firmware, and I verified my Arlo doorbell was on and had the latest available firmware. It seemed that I was out of luck with my existing Arlo doorbell. I searched online for clues on what do, but nothing useful came up beyond finding an end-of-support list of Arlo devices with my doorbell device absent from that list. Still not sure whether to proceed with the update or not, and risk losing access to my old Arlo doorbell, I contacted Arlo Customer Support for guidance and clarification. The Arlo Customer Support team were extremely helpful and assured me that my doorbell was supported (despite the message to the contrary.) So, back to upgrading the Arlo Secure App and installing my new camera, I chose the “Upgrade Anyways” option (still felt a little uneasy with that “Anyways” word being there) and in an instant the Arlo Secure App was updated. I added the Arlo Pro 5S 2K Camera and configured it. And after all being done, I still had access to my Arlo doorbell, nice! >> Setup If you already have the Arlo Secure App, you might need to update it, also make sure your current Arlo devices are with the latest firmware (see the notes above.) Otherwise, just download the Arlo Secure App from the app store (you’d need to create an account with Arlo.) In the Arlo Secure App, select “Add” device and follow the on-screen instructions, they are descriptive enough to allow you setup the camera without much effort. Just a few things to note based on my experience setting up the Arlo Pro 5S camera: - If you already have the battery inserted, to connect to a wireless network, you don’t need to extract the battery completely, just take the outside cover and there is a button near the battery charge connector that you can press for the camera to start blinking blue. I found out about this when changing the wireless network from a 2.4Ghz to one supporting 5Ghz. - It is recommended (well it is instructed) to connect to a 2.4Ghz network for the initial setup. - I had an older version of the Arlo Secure App, and I thought it would take minutes to upgrade it. I was surprised that it took only a couple of seconds to complete the upgrade (I suspect the App updates were already downloaded and were just waiting to be activated.) - After the camera scanned the QR code for connecting to a wireless network, it took a while for the App to “recognize” the camera. It was about a minute, but it felt very long, especially given that I had the camera and the phone with the App next to the router. - Once the camera was added, an option for updating its firmware showed up, which I selected, and the light started blinking blue and then amber interchangeably. The update failed then and on a few subsequent attempts, I decided to skip that step and complete the setup. Later, with everything working, I went to the Firmware option for the camera, and it showed “no updates available”. This was a little annoying since one gets to believe the camera is not up to date during the setup. - You do need to enter the Wi-Fi password, as leaving it blank still allows you to move to the next screen and you might be “forever” trying to add the device. You can choose to “share” access to the devices with other family members. From the primary account, in the Arlo Secure App, you choose who to share, what devices to share, and what access they’ll have on the shared devices. We have two phones that can access the doorbell and the camera, and can react to the notifications, very nitty. >> Outdoor I was searching for an outdoor security camera that could resist the dire weather conditions of the Pacific Northwest, and this one seems to be holding on just fine for now. Winter will tell how sturdy the Arlo Pro 5S camera is since the weather is rainy and cold with some snow. Nevertheless, it’s been raining and a little cold for the past several days and accessing the device has been fine from within the Arlo Secure App. One problematic aspect I see by having the device outdoors is recharging the battery. When the recharge time comes, it means uninstalling the device from its outdoors location, getting it inside for recharging, and installing it back in its outdoors location. This means, you’d need to place the device in a more or less accessible area, but not too accessible so that it can be easily stolen. The battery seems to last for several weeks; however, I still foresee myself complaining when recharging the battery. If I had it for indoor use, I’d suspect recharging the battery would feel easy and not an inconvenience at all. >> Floodlight For outdoor use, the floodlight’s brightness is just ok, not too bright but enough to distinguish objects and the general vicinity. If floodlight is one of your primary features sought after, you may need to find another Arlo device in which that feature is more prominent, as I don’t think the floodlight feature is the shiniest one for the Arlo 5S camera. For indoor use, the floodlight intensity is more than enough as far as I could test, you can even choose to dim it if it is too bright. >> Battery As far as I can tell, the battery life is very good. Based on my usage in the last few days, in Optimized mode (not the best video quality but decent enough), I expect the device to last for over a month before needing to recharge the battery. I haven’t measured it since I had done it only once, but it feels the device charges fast (well depending where you plug it in). You’ll get to know when it is fully charged when the blue light is on (the minimum you expect is to know when the device is fully charged!) >> Security features With the Arlo Secure App, you can access to the many features of this device and adjust the settings to your needs: - define activity zones. - adjust the field of view (from wide 160 degrees, 125 degrees standard and to 110 degrees full mode). - video quality. - Spotlight brightness. - and many more. In the Arlo Secure App, you can also configure Routines (a set of schedules) on when to arm your devices for much needed security. I am very pleased with the device and the app. For example, we’ve been able to detect bunnies running outside in the rain (we thought they were gone for good, but it nice to know what is going on out there while we are sleeping.)

I have other Arlo cameras inside the house for doggie cans, and I have an Arlo doorbell. All excellent products with good reliability and months between charges. This camera’s spotlight must really rack up power drains because the battery only lasts about two weeks. That would not be an issue except that the charger is completely proprietary for some reason. Functionality and quality is fantastic as expected. The video feed is sharp and full color, even at night. The sensitivity of the motion sensor for the spotlight and camera can be adjusted. However, it is not intelligent enough to distinguish an animal or passing car from a person, so you get a lot of false positives depending on placement. More intelligence to discern those things would be much appreciated. Think carefully about where you’ll mount the camera because you’re going to need to charge it often. Ideal placement may be at the top of an eave, but don’t put it there unless you plan to haul a ladder and extension cord out every few weeks! I tested battery stamina prior to mounting the camera and am glad I did. I ended up putting it lower and closer to an outlet. The phone app is EASY. All my Arlo devices are on one screen and I can view activity live at a glance. Pay for subscription to keep your feeds. I recommend for ease of use, quality, and reliability, but I stole a star for that silly charger and battery life.

Overall, I'd say the security camera's are a good product. The video has good quality. The live view is pretty good. They were relativity easy to install. The batteries last a long time and are easy to exchange. The only issue I have is the service. It's hard getting ahold of the company. They raise your rates to often.

So far, this system picks up the activity which occurs in front of the cameras. These cameras replaced Night Owl cameras and I must say that the Arlo system is much easier to use. Events can be brought up and looked at much easier than with Night Owl. The only negative is Arlo's customer service. A month of free monitoring comes with the system and then you have to either get a hub and recording device or else subscribe to Arlo's monitoring system. I had decided to go with Arlo's system but couldn't get the website to accept my payment information. I wanted to talk to someone at Arlo but no phone number for customer service is listed and there's no way to find one. I had to do an online chat and the results were not satisfactory. I'm still in the trial period, so when it ends I will try subscribing again.

I like these cameras, they come in pretty clear and have did its job for me. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because there are times I feel like it catches things a little slow. My old cameras I felt like picked things up a lot faster, but overall this camera is a decent choice and for the price it isn’t bad. It records, and when it’s on a very low battery it will still take a snapshot until you change and charge the battery. The battery life is pretty good as well, so you aren’t taking it down every two days to charge which is also nice. It lasts days.

Super clear image; easy to navigate the app; easy to recharge the batteries! I had previously used Blink cameras and didn’t love the battery situation or the way the mounts worked. The Arlo mount is much more sturdy and maneuverable in my opinion!
