I had 1st Gen a couple of years back and loved it because it recognize animals, people or boxes easily, so I decided to give it try but so far lots of issues with audio, and recoginzing. The audoo sounds like a blown speaker and when volume is adjust, it goes mute, where you can barely hear it. And to top it off, after contacting Arlo, and running many tests, they wanted me to do a “RMA” meaning to return mine device at my own cost and wait for them to receive so they can send me a “replacement”, which I find it unacceptable, but after an email, they were able to make it better and now theyrw sending a new unit.

Great Camera and Features - Audio Issue

If been using the Arlo 2nd Gen Smart doorbell for a little over a week now. I have been an owner/user of wireless Arlo cameras for years so I had an idea of what I should expect. I have installed a few wired and wireless doorbells in the past for myself and family – a Ring and a few Wyze doorbells. I set the camera up as a wired option since I have an existing chime and wiring. It has been pretty smooth sailing, but it has not been without hiccups.
Even without prior knowledge of installing video doorbells the Arlo Smart Doorbell would be very easy to install. In the wired setup you can keep your original 8-24V Digital or Mechanical chime. The hardest part of the process was finding which breaker the existing doorbell was on. Once the breaker was flipped I pulled off the old one and prepped the wires to attach to the Arlo. The doorbell kit comes with 2 extension wires in case your existing wiring is too short – mine were long enough so I didn’t need them. The base plate pops off the back of the doorbell body using a SIM-card pin-tool (included), and it carries the wire terminals and the mounting holes. The doorbell also comes with an angled plate, but it wasn’t needed for my install. The doorbell body is quite long – I have vinyl siding and it spans 1.25 laps, so I had to position it across 2 laps. All of the install process is guided within the app. Once it’s wired you flip the power back on, and complete the setup by connecting it to your network and configuring your chime setup. I have a mechanical chime, so that is what I configured it to use. This is where I ran into an issue – the app bugged out at this step and didn’t configure the chime correctly. My chime worked fine for a day or so, but then stopped responding to the bell being rung. I had to reset the doorbell back to factory default and repeat the setup process, which appeared to fix it.
The doorbell comes with a month trial of Arlo Secure, which is Arlo’s cloud based detection and alert service. The could service includes motion detection filtering, and package detection. I have let my wireless cams go off-plan for a bit in the past, and it was brutal to filter through all of the false movement alerts. Until the trial runs out I won’t know how the doorbell handles things off-plan, but it will still stream video/audio, provide alerts, and function as a doorbell.
The doorbell is not an entry level device, but doesn’t break the bank either. It’s priced in the middle of today’s doorbell ranges, but comes with a good amount of features. It comes with a 2K (1944x1944) resolution, 2-way full duplex audio, wired or wireless install, and the ability to use your existing chime. It has a 180° field of view so I have a minimal deadzone close to the door – I can see everything starting at about 16-18” from my house. Image quality during daytime is pretty good. Watching recorded video the image is crisp is easy to spot details. I can just read my license plate from 30ft away in the driveway. Live stream picks up some artifacts due to bitrate, but otherwise looks pretty good. I can’t seem to find any specs for FPS, but the video quality is smooth enough that it can’t be too low. Nighttime image quality isn’t too bad either. Up close is handled well by the infrared lights, and my streetlight adds enough to the background to keep the image clear enough. The button also lights up which helps you find it in the dark.
Accessing the camera is done through the app, but can also be handled through a browser. Notifications are very fast if you are home – 1-2 seconds. When I was out of the home I would get notified 4-5 seconds later, which is on par with my wireless Arlo cameras. One of the advantages of this doorbell is compatibility with my Google Hub, which my Wyze didn’t work with due to it’s 4:3 video format. Accessing the stream on my phone still takes more than a few seconds because the app is somewhat slow to get started. When the doorbell button is pushed it calls my phone within a few seconds, and once I answer I can view the stream fairly quick. The animated notifications arrive and are generated within a few seconds as well, which is often all I need to see. These are really helpful, and one of the things I have appreciated about my Arlo cameras over the years. Much like the other Arlo cameras you can define your alert zone, which helps cut down on false movement notifications.
I have ran into an issue though and its related to the audio. I am hopeful that it gets fixed soon. I am running the latest Android on a Pixel 7 Pro, and the app and device are up to date. When I view the live camera feed and talk through the mic I have feedback issues. The mic on the doorbell pics up sound from its own speaker somewhat, and that causes a feedback loop. Turning the doorbell speaker down doesn't resolve the issue. I can manage it by turning my media volume down to nothing, but then I can’t hear anything from the other side. I have to mute myself as soon as I am done talking, which defeats the purpose of 2-way full duplex audio. I should be able to hold a back and forth conversation. When I answer the call from the doorbell is where I really run into trouble, and it’s basically unusable. Answering the call brings up the video feed with my phone’s mic muted, but the mic on the doorbell is on. I can hear everything going on at the door without issue, and I can send the premade responses easily. When I unmute the mic in the app that allows me to talk I get a massive audio feedback loop. I can basically get 1 or 2 words out before I have to mute it again. It’s bad. The solution for this on Arlo’s website is to turn it off speaker phone and go into handset mode like a regular phone call. That does not appear to be an option, and may have been a thing before the recent big UI app update. I have gone through all the menus and toggled the mic, the speaker, adjusted the speaker level, turned the volume on my phone down to nothing, etc. The call is locked into speakerphone, and that little bit of audio feedback the doorbell gets from its mic hearing its speaker is enough to blow things out. The only thing I can do to get around it is to have Bluetooth earbuds connected to my phone. With earbuds in it works great – zero issues, and I can hold a conversation. However, its wildly impractical to have to scramble to get earbuds on just to answer the doorbell feed. I have not experienced this issue on my Wyze doorbell or any of my other cameras that use 2-way audio (Arlo Ultra 2, Wyze, Google, Tapo). I was able to replicate the issue on another phone (LG V40) with identical results.
Overall, the doorbell is a nice piece of hardware. It has a good camera and image sensor with a wide viewing angle. The install process is very easy, and it’s a huge plus that it natively supports the existing mechanical chime. Notifications are reliable and quick to arrive, and the quality/accuracy of the alerts (with the Arlo Secure trial) is very good as well. The biggest let down is the audio feedback issue I am experiencing. I really hope this can be fixed soon because it’s hampering an otherwise great product.

I've been using the Arlo Smart Wi-Fi Camera for a few months now, and I'm really impressed with its performance. The video quality is excellent—clear, sharp, and consistent both during the day and at night. I especially like the wide-angle view and the color night vision, which gives me peace of mind when checking on my property after dark.
Setup was quick and easy thanks to the wireless design and user-friendly mobile app. The camera connected to my Wi-Fi without any issues, and I had it mounted and running in under 30 minutes.
The motion detection is very accurate, and I appreciate being able to customize motion zones to reduce false alerts. The two-way audio works well, and it's nice to be able to communicate through the camera if needed.
It also integrates smoothly with my smart home system (Alexa/Google), and the app makes it simple to view live footage, check event history, or adjust settings on the go.

I loved the ease of setting up the account and camera. I like it better than blink or ring. They both have been complex in the past with setting up. Arlo makes it easy and the quality of the video is great, as is the communication between the doorbell and my phone.

Good, Wireless 4K Doorbell Camera

TL;DR:
1. USE: Charge it, download the app, set up within the app
2. SETUP: Straightforward, but pay attention to the directions and wording
3. Usability: It’s easy. Once set up, the app will alert you to everything you want
4. It’s made well and feels premium
5. I’ve heard the battery life can be short, but this is the new model and I’ve been using it for about 2 weeks with great results (and temperatures that have ranged from the low 30s to low 70s).
I have a High Definition (1080 HD) Doorbell Camera by another manufacturer. I wanted something stronger with more of a fisheye lens to be able to see the ground and the walkway, including being able tot read the license plate on my car for clarity (this is 2160, 4K).
I charged it up with the USB-C charger. The installation was easy. I used the wireless setup, so it was basically drilling 2 holes near the front door and we’re good to go. The app setup was a little confusing. I fully set it up and then accidentally deleted it and all my settings. I didn’t realize the settings were gone for a few hours.
After setting it up and getting everything working properly, I noticed the day and nighttime recordings were very clear - better than the other brand. The audio was clear, as well - similar to the other brand. The fisheye lens (which it isn’t, but more of a larger lens - which I like), is very clear and shows natural images, but has the same clarity of not being able to read my license plate. Also, although the lens is larger, it doesn’t show the ground in front of the door for packages. This only has one camera and not a dedicated second lens, so that’s sort of expected.
Detection on both cameras were mostly similar with the settings being mirrored. They both have missed things, like people coming to my front door, animals walking by, etc. The nicer thing on the Arlo is that it will let you know what it detects - like and animal versus a person. I like that feature.
Overall, I have a subscription plan and additional cameras with the other company. I like the Arlo, but I’m not sure it’s worth currently worth upgrading for me. There are pros and cons to both. I would like a dedicated camera faced toward the ground and zooming features that can read more clearly up to 30-50ft.

Fits in well with the Arlo Ecosystem

I've got lots of Arlo cameras around the house so when I saw this video doorbell I knew it would fit right in with my ecosystem. It was super easy to add in the app and quickly connected to my Eero wifi. I had to mount mine slightly higher than my old doorbell button but the mounting process was easy. It comes with an angle adapter in case your door trim pieces are angled. I found a third party DC adapter to hard wire mine in. If you have doorbell wiring at the mounting location, you can use that too. I would recommend hard wiring simply because then you don't have to worry about dismounting it to change the battery.
If you wire it in with your existing doorbell, it can use the mechanical chime already in your house or you can use one of Arlo's chime accessories for a standard chime in the house. Without a chime, when someone presses the doorbell button, your phone receives a "call" to alert you. It works well.
I like how at night, when the doorbell senses motion, the button lights up to show where to press it. It also records motion activity at your front door and allows you to view it within the Arlo app. As I already have multiple cameras, it was super easy to work with it via the app.
The video quality is good. The angle of the camera is extremely wide so it captures a wide field of view which is nice for a front door camera. There are lots of adjustments, and if you are running it on battery, there are battery saving modes where it takes photos instead of video. This is a good way to extend the battery life when it gets low. But again, for most users I would recommend hard wiring to eliminate the need to worry about battery.

The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) is the latest version of Arlo’s smart doorbell which raises resolution to 2K (from 1080P before) and adds a new look among a few other small tweaks. Devices now include USB-C connections for easy charging (if not hardwired) and offer a new set-up process for a more streamlined experience. After using the first-generation doorbell for several years, do these changes benefit the end user and is it enough to keep Arlo competitive? I am not so sure.
In the Box:
- Video Doorbell
- Indoor Charging Cable
- Wire Extension Kit
- Flat Mounting Plate
- Angled Mounting Plate
- Security Latch Release Pin
- Screw Kit
- Quick Start Guide
Setup:
Assuming you already have a newer Arlo security system, the setup is easy. Simply open the app and add a new camera. The app recently went through a new redesign (which isn’t the easiest to navigate) but it isn’t terrible. Once you go through the set by step process, it should be added to your system’s list of cameras. If you are setting this up as a sole camera, the process shouldn’t be all that different.
The biggest takeaway of an install is the fact this camera only supports 2.4gHz Wi-Fi connections, works with both digital and mechanical chimes (make sure you have a compatible chime), and needs to be fully charged.
The camera housing itself is fractionally wider than the first generation. This means that in tight clearance areas, it could be just wide enough to pose a problem (ahem, my situation). The kit includes a flat mount and angled mount which should cover most installations.
Camera/Performance:
The camera quality is… fine. I wouldn’t consider this to be groundbreaking by any means. I am not sure I can even tell a difference vs the 1080P version before but the more pixels the better in most cases. It is a very wide-angle lens which means it can get extra brick (in our case) inside of the frame which worsens the quality overall. Lucky you can set activity zones and crop the image to help minimize issues and better performance. Motion detection seems hit or miss.
The doorbell supports 2-way audio, and it is decent. Again, I can’t seem to tell a difference in performance from the last one. It works well enough for every situation and latency is minimal with a good connection.
The camera can be operated with the built-in battery as well although I would not recommend this as the entire camera has to come off to be able to charge the camera via USB-C from the back. I am not sure how long the battery would last as I have already hardwired mine.
App/Software:
My biggest issues have always come from the app and software integration. I think the Arlo hardware is fine for the most part (although performance could be hindered somewhat in this aspect also) but the software/app is hard to navigate and buggy. Using some of the smart features of the doorbell and camera system can be hard to find and utilize. They now have schedules which are called “routines” and “automations”. These are not intuitive to set up. I would also not rely on capturing 100% of security events in front of the cameras you may have with these systems because they just don’t work a portion of the time. The doorbell is great for notifications when someone presses the button but solely motion events may or may not get captured and/or notified.
Likes:
- Design
- 2K Resolution
- Hardwire/Battery
Dislikes:
- App
- Arlo Ecosystem Performance (As a whole)
Overall, the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) is an incremental step for their video doorbell lineup. With several mounting options and power methods it allows one to cover just about any situation. The design is attractive, and setup is easy. Would I recommend Arlo to someone who doesn’t already have one of their systems? Probably not. Would this be a good addition for someone who already has their camera system? Sure. My biggest issues with Arlo over several years has been the reliability in actually capturing motion events directly in front of the cameras which is the biggest reason to get a security system in the first place.

Arlo 2K Video Doorbell - Battery powered or Wired
Overall - This well packaged video doorbell included everything I needed to install it. Upon opening
the package you are prompted to CHARGE prior to setup and installation. I followed the instructions and
used the included cable to charge the unit while installing the backplate next to our front door.
Installation took about 25 minutes, part of which included removing an older unit which required an extra
box to mount on due to a much narrower field of view.
After popping the Arlo onto the backplate and removing the protective film, I realized it would have been
a lot easier to setup entirely with the app when I was still inside and after charging it. Don't be me,
do that inside and set up preferences in the app later.
The video quality is excellent. The wide field of view leads to a fisheye effect but that's a fair
trade as I can now see all of my porch. I can discriminate faces easily, license plates on cars pulling
into my driveway and leaves on closer trees. This is way beyond what my nearly 4 year old doorbell captured
and was definitely a worthy upgrade.
Subscription required ? -
Arlo cameras can work without a subscription. Basic features include: Live streaming, Two-way audio,
Push notifications, Live viewing, Basic notifications.
What I love !
- Video Quality is subjectively 5x better than my old video doorbell
- Super wide field of view.
Room for improvement -
"Apple HomeKit is not currently compatible with the Arlo Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) at launch. We
expect Apple HomeKit support to be made available in a future firmware release."

I chose a wireless connection for its ease of setup. Connecting to Wi-Fi took several attempts because it wouldn’t connect to the 5G network. I ended up using the standard connection, slightly slower, but not a dealbreaker.
I'm happy with the video resolution; the wide-angle view from head to toe works as advertised.
I gave it 3 stars due to its limited storage options. After the 1-month trial period, the unit becomes almost useless. While I still receive motion notifications on my phone via the Arlo app, I cannot view the footage. That’s all it does. It doesn’t save or store video feeds, and I can’t go back to review footage unless I subscribe. Last but not least, if a guest wants to reach you, or you need to contact emergency, guess what? It will not work. Subscribe is the only option.
This is something worth considering before making a purchase.

This is a good option for most as it provides options for both wired and wireless setup. It looks good and has many advanced features for security while integrating well in the Arlo ecosystem. The device has its faults but slightly redeems itself with the app which is loaded with features.
Pros:
Looks
-Ease of setup
-App features
-Integration with other Arlo devices
-Battery or hard wired
Cons:
-Video quality
-Audio quality
-Not many options for mounting
Setup:
The only people that might have an issue with setup are those who live in an apartment since you will most likely need to drill holes to mount this properly. I would have preferred a backplate with multiple screw spacing options but the spacing you will need measures out to 4” apart whereas your normal smaller doorbell is spaced about 2 ¼” apart. There is plenty of room in the backplate where they could have put a few more holes for various spacings which would have been just as secure to adhere to the wall. Your other option (not in the instructions) is to find a strong double-sided tape, there are many options available that will be very hard to rip off.
Pairing with the app requires charging the device, then using a SIM ejection tool to set up Wi-Fi. It only supports 2.4GHz which is both good and bad. Good due to the greater range it brings, but bad since your speed for video will be lower.
I installed the wired option using a mechanical chime. Verify on the website if your chime is compatible first. After securing power to the doorbell, I removed the old doorbell and installed the new one with the regular straight mounting plate and two existing wires. After plugging it in it was ready to go with a few tests.
Performance:
I tested it with a press of the bell, and it rang on my phone providing an answer/decline option. I was a little disappointed with the video quality since it is 2K resolution, but it looked more like 480P or lower to me with lots of artifacts. My Wi-Fi router is only about 10 feet away so the signal should have been strong. There are some neat quick reply text options in a call such as “leave the package at the door” or “sorry I can’t come to the door right now” and it speaks it in a feminine robotic voice to the person outside. In the app it leaves a call history, and you can view the videos after the fact stored in the cloud. Upon viewing the recorded message, items in the foreground are well defined but HDR is very bad with the sky being extremely blown out.
There are options in the menu for video quality. By default, it set itself to 1944x1944 at “optimized’ quality to imbalance quality vs battery life. If you are going to be wired, I highly recommend you set it to “best video”, but I did not find it increased the video quality by much and it still appeared relatively low resolution to me. Video has about a 2 second delay during an answered call.
Audio:
The audio sounded low resolution and low quality to me when standing outside. It gets the job done but it could be better. The same can be said about the recording with audio sounding like it was recorded on a phone.
Security features:
Where the product shines is what it allows you to do while integrating with the Arlo ecosystem. I have already discussed recordings of calls for record keeping, but in addition, you will also get activity zones, night vision and a 1-month trial to Arlo Secure providing you with the following; 30 days recording, intelligent alerts as to what triggered your camera, 24/7 emergency response, professional monitoring. These features will depend on what level of the subscription you end up subscribing for but can be very useful.

Our second Arlo doorbell, a lot easier to connect to wi-fi and install from the essential . Great video and audio especially at night. Would like flatter wire connectors as they push out the doorbell, but very easy to correct.
