Customers admire the SURFboard mAX Pro's impressive coverage and ease of use, with many praising its simple setup and strong signal. However, some users express frustration with the limited number of Ethernet ports and occasional difficulties with the setup app. The app's functionality and user-friendliness are points of contention for some customers. While the range is generally well-received, improvements to the app and port availability would enhance the overall user experience.

Solid Router - But Not Recommended

The ARRIS - SURFboard mAX Pro Wireless-AX6600 Tri-Band Mesh Wi-Fi 6 System is, for the most part, a very good wifi router solution for covering a large home area.
Set-up was straight-forward and simple. Just follow the directions given by the SURFBoard Central app. However, for some reason, it did not accept the activation code sent via email until the 3rd code was sent. Other than that, set-up was a breeze.
Coverage is excellent and I appreciate the signal speed and strength tools.
Unfortunately, for me, there is one big flaw that keeps me from recommending this unit: No real parental controls. The only thing you can do is create a profile and then 'pause' internet. No filters. No automatic time schedule. No options. I cannot, in good conscience, recommend a wifi solution that does not give parents the means to protect their kids. Even for those who have no children in the home, I recommend having parental control options for the sake of the children of friends and extended family who visit. To be honest, I was very surprised to see this feature missing. It's such a standard on other routers I've set up over the past 5 years that I almost did not check it before writing this review.

As a previous customer of Arris as they were the brand my previous internet provider used. I can say that they have improved significantly as this router boasts the latest features of Wi-Fi 6. The router provides coverage up to 5,500 feet which is overkill in my situation as I am in an apartment. But, it is always good to have and not need than to need and not have! I am getting great speeds from both uploading and downloading. Thus far, I have not experienced any lags, sluggish starts, nor dead spots. I commend Arris for strengthening of their product as they are a true contender in the crowded field of routers!

The Arris setup took about 15 minutes to unbox and install. The app allowed me to configure the main unit and satellite unit with ease. By far the easiest Mesh system I have ever installed! Our entire house now gets full signal on WiFi when before we struggled to get any signal in the furthest corners. If you are looking for a system that is easy to configure and maintain, that will provide amazing coverage this is the package for you!

I am pleased with how this Arris SURFboard mAX mesh system is working for me. I am a very high traffic internet home, with Google Fiber gigabit speed and over 60 devices hooked up via Wi-Fi or ethernet at any given time. A big concern I had going into this was whether Google Fiber would allow this router to work without hooking up their crappy network box and thankfully it does which is phenomenal. My stuff ranges from smart home tech to streaming devices to next gen gaming consoles. I have about 2000 sq feet on a split level so conventional routers have always struggled to provide adequate coverage making mesh technology ideal. My home uses several TB of data every month. My old setup could no longer handle all my traffic, so I am happy to say that this one seems to be doing a great job so far. Where I was getting 250mbps of download speed on my hardwired Xbox before, I am now exceeding 600mbps regularly for example. Speed tests on my phone used to hover around 90mbps now get over 400mbps. Speed is not the only factor of course; my whole network seems to generally function much faster with fewer hiccups compared with what I had been dealing with. Loading and buffer times for streaming and casting are notably better and smoother, my security cameras are faster to respond to requests, and I have fewer instances of devices getting hung up on a connectivity issue.
Setting up this router is where things got dicey for me, and the biggest reason I don’t feel it is deserving of perfect praise. You must download the correct app to get things up and running and start by following instructions for setting up an account and getting the main router hooked up. It ran into multiple problems during setup, thinking it had no connection to the internet, reporting after that was resolved that the Arris back office could not register my device which would not allow me to proceed or skip that step, and network optimization starting in the background that consumed resources and gave me no feedback about what it was doing, how long it would take, or even why. Once I spent well over an hour on the router, I finally had it working and started on the satellite only to encounter some of the same hiccups. Basically, setup was not for the faint of heart and if you don’t have at least some idea how this sort of thing is supposed to work you may have a lot of trouble with the process. After it was all done and optimized, over 2 hours from start to finish it got much smoother. Ever since, the app has been better about giving me information about devices on the network, allowing me to identify them, check connection speeds, and see what is connected to the main router and the satellite. I do have a complaint about the satellite, it is much larger than I expected and having to plug it directly into an outlet having it stick out quite far makes finding the ideal location much more cumbersome. Unlike other mesh networks I have tried there is a noticeable hang at times when things switch between the two devices and that is also a bit disappointing.
Outside of the long and difficult setup process my home network has since never been better. I have full access to the gigabit speeds I am paying for both on ethernet and now Wi-Fi for the first time. I have plenty of coverage throughout my house and the router does a great job controlling all my traffic and bandwidth. I got exactly what I wanted and hoped for, even if there were some drawbacks at the very beginning. I would love to be able to get a second satellite to help with my split-level home even more but for now things seem to be doing okay even without. If you need high speed, wide coverage, and have tons of tech in your home this router would be an excellent choice that I recommend, just beware of the setup once you get it done it gets so much better.

This router must be set up using their mobile app. I prefer a web UI for setup but that's not available. I had to disable the wifi on my modem/router combination, and that in itself wasn't easy. It was fairly simple to set up using the app though. I would prefer to customize my configuration but this is quite limited for that. All of that being said. I have coverage everywhere in my home and also in the garage. I was able to remove the old wifi extender and still have a strong connection to my floodlight cam off the garage. This mesh set is great for those who want no muss no fuss. Those that do like to make small configuration changes may want to look somewhere else.

Arris Surfboard Max Pro wireless is a pretty powerful wi-Fi router for today’s age. Speeds are astronomical using Wifi 6 in a much mature state. This thing is also Alexa enable so you can pretty much activate Wi-Fi with your voice without any issues. It is very easy to set up once you get everything down. I don’t really care for the design choice but overall the router does its job.
One of the best features of this device is that a connects up to 150 devices which is an insane amount of Wi-Fi devices at once. Obviously, I can’t test out this feature but I did connect up to 19 devices that I have. And each one of them kept at a consistent speed from iPhones, Windows PCs, Gaming devices, tablets, Nanoleaf, Arcade 1up Wifi…I mean everything is connected and working perfectly. Each of the units provides up to 2000+ sq ft of range that is a wide web around the house. Nowhere was a dead spot in my home where I had difficulty like the kitchen.
I enjoyed creating a mesh system with this network as well it was very simple to do as well as setting it up with the Arris Surfboard App. A software update and things were ready to go. The app pretty much takes care of everything. Once I created the mesh things just blasted with the speed that’s near the kitchen. Outdoors internet range reached farther than my old router and it was perfect for outdoor barbecues. Totaling 5,000 sq ft. with the mesh. The app itself gives you standard views of your router information. Such as network monitoring, parental controls, and creating guess networks.
The Surfboard Max is a great router because. It’s just a very good home router that will be simple for the family to set up. There won’t be anything here that confuses you such as router gaming features that you will probably never use. This is just something that is great for expanding coverage in your home without a hassle. I appreciate Arris for making this easy for me to use and not only to review this surfboard max. It was just dead simple and if you are in the market for a good router that covers your WHOLE home. This is it. Would definitely recommend it.

With each generation of mesh systems, the technology gets better. I have a 1GB cable connection at my house and have not been able to fully utilize it via wifi until now. Of course, you don't always get 1GB or possibly 700GB depending on network congestion but other systems kept me at around 200MB speeds. This device easily delivers 600-700Mbps most of the time via wifi. The app is really nice and easy to use. Setup is never as seamless as they advertise but it was pretty painless after some work. I would highly recommend this!
