Designed For Gaming – Fantastic Sound/Versatility

IMHO – This Astro Gaming – A40 TR Wired Stereo Gaming Headset with MixAmp Pro TR Controller is the closest a gamer can get to professional-level, engrossing, multi-dimensional sound. I selected this Astro Stereo Gaming Headset in exchange for an honest review. Wow! I was absolutely blown-away by the penetrating sound dimensions and nuances. The absolute, main reason we buy any headset is for the sound quality. Logitech has developed this headset specifically for gaming. And, they have hit a home run. I have been a audiophile from the early 60's building stereo sets for family and friends. Loved building speakers to reproduce rich, energizing, immersive sound magnitudes to match the recording artist's dynamics. Although this unit is not exactly my favorite headset for all music genres, it does make gaming lively and phenomenal for gaming sounds. My Grand Kids 'hooked' me on games because as a Grandpa I needed to bond with them in the things they were interested in and loved to do. So, at 75 I am probably one of the oldest practicing gamers around..... My Grand Kids have figured out that they can eventually best Grandpa because his fingers are just not as nimble on the controller as theirs are. However, every once in a while Grandpa gets 'lucky'. While they are in school I get to practice and explore all the tips and tricks – Bring it ON. WooHoo! What do I love about this Astro Gaming Headset and MixAmp? ***AUDIO EXCELLENCE*** - ASTRO Audio™ V2 provides the best gaming-theme, digital sound of the particular game that you are playing. Dolby Audio Surround Sound and optional Dolby Atmos. When it comes to background nuances and multi-dimensional sounds gamers like me love to hear, this Astro has no equal. It is designed for serious gamers. I certainly am not one, but I thoroughly enjoy that the percussion sounds are so realistic, and, the background voices, unique sounds only in gaming competitions are so realistic and professional-like. Mic quality is outstanding. My Grand Kids tell me they hear me clear and loud. Love it. The unique high sounds frequently give away enemy positions (Grand Kids). I have listened to Pandora music genres on this headset, and I was super impressed. It is not what this headset is intended for, but proves its versatility and high-quality of sound reproduction. YooHoo! ***MIX AMP PRO TR*** - Intuitive controls put my game to voice equalization, master volume control and my choice of four different EQ settings at my convenience. It features Dolby® Digital Surround Sound processing and supports Windows Sonic. I can control the volume of the mic, game, connect to Xbox, PC, Stream, auxiliary, and daisy chain, which provides connection to multiple units and several players at the same time. This unit enables voice lag-free communication and 2 year Dolby Atmos® activation included with Xbox One licensed products to enhance the headset with spatialized object audio (Xbox One and Windows 10 PC only). One of the greatest attributes I like is the balancing between game and voice. I can shout out instructions, or, other words and expressions my Grand Kids love to hear while they are 'cleaning-my-sox'. ***COMFORTABLE FIT & BUILD*** – This is a quality - built headset. The composite, plastic, adjustable headband and ear cup holders are strong, durable, yet lightweight. The ear cups are made of a comfortable fabric, richly cushioned, and easily worn over both of my ears. After several hours of 'gaming' with my Grand Kids my ears feel refreshed, and, not stressed. Mod Kits are available and include: Noise-Isolating Ear Cushion, Voice-Isolating, Padded Headband, and Closed-Back Speaker Tags. The ear cups are held in place by magnets and easily interchangeable. ***CUSTOM SETTINGS*** – I can customize my headset through the Astro Command Center software making changes to my Astro Mix Amp Pro. It is FREE and available for download for PC and IOS (see pics). This piece of equipment is invaluable for gaming audio settings, and switching from PC to XBOX, daisy chain, auxiliary, and streaming. I set my audio to 'Tournament' because the dynamic audio inspires me to be a better player (see pics). YIKES! ***CONCLUSION*** - As the old saying goes, “you get what you pay for”. This Astro Gaming – A40 TR Wired Stereo Gaming Headset with MixAmp Pro TR Controller is undoubtedly the bestest Headset on the gaming market. After two weeks of constant use, I highly recommend this unit, for gamers, who want the very finest in audio sound, which translates to making you a more focused and better player..... I love it! This makes a extraordinary gift for that special family member or friend, or, for your own personal elevation joy of gaming. Buy it, you won't be disappointed.

This is overall a great headset. Let me get into specifics for you. It is one of the top headsets and all pro cod players use it. The price between the mic amp version and non-mix amp version is totally worth it. I had both and the amount of control and customization features on the mix amp is insane. Not just is the sound great, it has a great feel on your head, grey cushions and has options for other cushions. Honestly I gave it a 5 star because it’s been 2 weeks and I have no complaints or anything I’d change about it. Also since I stream I can say that streamers, this is a great headset and honestly can change the way you play. Now some people may over hype it but until you own it and actually experience it you can’t say anything. Huge streamers like NickMercs and Swagg also use this headset and it’s the most used headset by professional e-sports players. I hope my review convinced you enough to but it even though in no way do I get anything out of this except satisfaction that I hopefully help someone make the right decision.

    Made my grandson jealous!

Made my grandson jealous! He has the Version A10. I admit it, these are very comfortable headsets. I wore it in the office for a few hours and almost forgot they were on till I started to leave my desk and realized they were still attached to my head. The DOLBY noise reduction was amazing. Binaural audio is best heard in headsets. * I especially liked the quite, smooth transition when I changed the volume on the MIXAMP. No static like some cheap volume controls. * The DOLBY switch to pass through works great too. * While I mostly kept the MIXAMP (right knob) centered, you can notice some sort of filtering or tuning of the sound by turning the knob. * Dolby ATMOS(phere) seemed to make objects able to be sensed all around me, left, right, behind and above me. Amazing. * Comfortable microphone arm can be plugged in on the left or right headset thanks to the magic of magnets used to hold the headphone covers in place. COOL! * My grandson love playing ROBLOX on my large screen TV with headsets on so they can play online with their friends online. Keeps the house a little quieter than over my stereo amp and room speakers! * Game writers go through a lot of trouble to give us great audio and the Astro does then proud. Tournament Ready* * Close your eyes and your sure to feel the sounds come alive. Great bass from drum beats. * A friend of mine who plays the trumpet thinks they sound great. I agree. * Nice touch: Letter R and L on the headset posts.

This is a great headset. It has a ton of options for audio quality and allows you to fine tune it in the Astro app. Uses a USB port to work on Xbox series x also supports optical. Headset is light and comfortable. The mixamp is very useful and nicely built. Some issues are that the firmware has to be updated on pc and should be able to be updated while connected to the console. Firmware required even on ONe X it was frustrating to learn that because it didn’t work out of the box. Also I use keyboard and mouse on the Xbox and prefer to have controller wired to console but it only has 3 USB ports more of an Xbox issue but still something to consider if you have usb Hdds or something similar. Also doesn’t come with stand like the original a50s. Overall the audio is great and mixamp makes it easy to change on the fly.

    Sleek, Tough Gaming Headset

    Pros mentioned:
    Comfy, For gaming, Mixamp

Astro is probably the biggest name in gaming headsets, and I now understand why. This A40 setup delivers stellar audio, a classy, modern design, comfort, and portability. Really, it's almost the perfect headset. The good: this is a quality product, one that screams premium device. It looks like a gaming headset, but if you didn't know any better you could mistake it for a high-end pair of headphones. The design is comfortable for long sessions, and in fact, is the most comfortable headset I've ever tried. Audio is great, especially at this price point. It delivers a rich sound that allows you to become immersed in whatever you're playing, and also isn't too shabby for music or video listening too. The MixAmp Pro is also good, albeit with a few caveats behind it. The idea is great, and setting up everything is easy to follow, though the directions could be confusing if you aren't used to hooking up tech. You can use it with Xbox One or PC, and I've tried both. I prefer it with PC simply because the software plays nicer with Windows (from my experience) but it worked either way. I love being able to tweak all the audio settings from the MixAmp rather than have to use Windows mixer, etc. Now, the results are a little quirky, and I found, at times, that changing the overall sound worked better for some games over others, which is to be expected, but something to note. The bad: honestly, the only real con here is that there isn't any carrying case for the headset itself. Every other headset I've ever bought has come with a pouch, case, etc. to tote around if needed, but the A40's did not. That said, this is the minor-ist of gripes. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their gaming or audio experience on Windows PC or Xbox One.

    Great Gaming Headset

The Astro A40 + Mixamp Pro are a great combo for the Xbox. It is packaged very nice. Contents include the headset, mic, mixamp, usb cables, aux cable, optical cable, 2 yr subscription card for Dolby Atmos. Sound: Sound is great, gets loud and you can hear a lot of details. Comfort: These feel comfortable. Earcups are soft and the headband fits snug without being overly tight. Long gaming sessions without discomfort. Mixamp: Nice smooth control knobs. Everything plugs into this and it has preset EQ settings. It is also lighted to see what settings are on, I do wish there was an option to turn this off. But not a deal breaker by any means. Build quality: Seems nicely built. Light weight but a bit on the plastic side but still feels quality. Very customizable. Mod kits are sold separate to modify headbands, speaker covers etc... Overall a very nice pair of gaming headsets that hit a lot of check marks for me.

If you are a serious gamer then you have already heard of Astros. They have been some of the most popular gamer headsets for many years. This latest offering continues their tradition of excellence. Pros: - Perfect for streamers and hardcore gamers. Adjust your game and chat volumes on the fly. - Crystal clear audio. Music also sounds amazing! - Comfortable fit for long gaming sessions. - Extraordinary customization opportunities. Mod kits are sold separately. - I love having quick access to a mute button with headsets and this one delivers that with an in line switch. Cons: - Set up is a bit of a hassle with firmware updates but not a huge concern. - They are a bit heavier than I like but the sacrifice for performance is worth it. This model of Astros should be considered by any serious gamers that only want the best quality audio performance. They are top-notch.

No documentation, no phone support but top quality

    Pros mentioned:

    Cable, Instructions

As a previous owner of Astro A50s I have come to love the Astro brand, despite some definite flaws. For the Astro A40 I was looking forward to a really high quality headset without the flaws found in the Astro A50 concerning the rechargeable batteries. When the Astro A40 arrived it was very impressive with the way that it was packaged. It definitely exudes high quality in how they present it when you are opening the box. So far, so good! The problem began when I saw the "documentation" consisted of a two page glossy insert that demonstrates the basic functionality of the actual headset while completely ignoring all aspects of the more complicated MixAmp Pro TR controller. The very light documentation refers the consumer to a couple of videos to watch regarding setup. There is no actual written documentation for setup, nor is there any actual documentation of all of the aspects of the different selectors, switches, etc of the MixAmp Pro TR. I did go and watch both videos and setup the headset and the MixAmp Pro TR according to the video but I did notice that the MixAmp Pro TR that I had did not match what was in the videos. A quick search of the Astro gaming site revealed a bit of documentation of the MixAmp Pro but none of it actuall showed the newer (side-by-side knobs) MixAmp Pro TR, and instead showed the older version. The only way to actually get any idea what the various buttons and connections of the MixAmp Pro TR did was to look at the back of the box on the feature set. I began setup of my headset and MixAmp Pro TR and it seemed simple enough. However, once connected I could get no sound nor would the microphone work. After about an hour to hour and a half of trying various things in Windows, as well as attempting to change settings on the MixAmp Pro TR I was at a wits end. I am the last person to ever want to call support but at this point I felt I had no options and so I called the number contained in my documentation. This number rang to...Logitech? I guess Logitech owns Astro? Anyways, they said "Oh here is the number for Astro support" and then proceeded to give me a new number. I called this number, go through the various options to get to an agent and am then informed that they can only accept an order for a product or refer me to a website if I want to purchase something. When asked what the correct number for phone technical support for my new A40 headset with MixAmp Pro TR I was told that there is none, only email support. For a $250 headset there is no phone support? Seriously? I finally did email the support and a few hours (I believe two) got an answer with some general tips to try. One tip said to try the headset on other systems, say perhaps an iPhone or another PC. I tried connecting to my work PC and it did not work, no sound, no mic. I tried connecting to my iPhone and nothing. Then I unplugged the cable and plugged it to my iPad and voila! sound!! As it turns out the 1/8" jack to 1/8" jack that is provided is not bi-directional, it only works one way. And that way is with the mute box (a small 3/4" box) nearest the actual headset. Once I realized that I connected it back to my PC and lo and behold, the sound worked just plain as day. The microphone though still did not work and the volume knobs both showed red, indicating (I guess?) that the system was muted. I still could not figure out though how to unmute it. Again, no documentation and no explanation of much of anything. What the box was on the inline cord? A mute button? I believed it to be a mute button of some sort but it didn't seem to have anything to press. After a few minutes of fiddling with it I figured out that it's a slider. It's a bit difficult to push but once you do it mutes the headset. You will know this because once you push it hard enough then the slider moves and the dials go from red to white, indicating that you are no longer muted. And lo and behold the microphone then worked perfectly fine. All in all once I got everything working, which because of the lack of documentation and lack of phone support, took about two hours altogether, the headset worked really well. Music and games sound really great and I didn't even get the volume knob anywhere close to maximum. I think I got it about 65% and at that rate it was very, very loud. The microphone, per my teammates on my PC Division 2 game, said that they could hear me well and without much issue. They all indicated it was the same quality as my Astro A50 that I had been previously using. The ability to adjust the game volume versus the chat line volume is HUGE and very welcome as it makes it a really quick and easy way to balance out the game sounds of gunfire with your friends voices. This is the best thing about the headset I think. Originally I had planned to test this headset with my Xbox One as well but after the completely frustrating setup experience with the PC I decided not to so this review only covers the PC side. The only other issue of note that I should mention is that there is no mute when you flip the microphone up, which most headsets have. You do have to remember to manually push the mute button slider on the inline cord or the microphone will not be muted. This is more of an annoyance than any serious complaint. And the fact that the volume knobs do both turn red when muted will serve to remind you if the system is muted or not (assuming you have the knobs where they can be seen). As for the fit and how they feel, they feel fantastic and very comfortable, even a bit more so in my opinion than the Astro A50, which until this headset I considered as the best and most comfortable headset to wear. I also noticed I did not get as hot after using these for several hours as well so that's a bonus if you sometimes find that you get hot while wearing a gaming headset. So in the end do I recommend it? Yes, I definitely do. These are a high quality, really enjoyable headset to use. I did send a detailed email to the Astro support team complaining about lack of documentation, both with the product itself as well as on their online web site. There is also no excuse whatsoever for such a premium product to be lacking phone support. If they do not want to provide that then at the very least chat support should be provided. Because while they did get back to me via email fairly quickly when I had an issue, within two hours, it is still not right to have to wait even that amount of time to get answers when you've invested so much in a product of this nature. Normally, because of the high quality of the product I would award this product 5 stars. However, I am deducting one star for lack of documentation and one star for lack of phone support for a total rating of 3 stars. If Astro could address these issues this would become highly recommended but until then it is simply...RECOMMENDED.

Only thing holding it back is the software

    Posted .
    Pros mentioned:

    Cons mentioned:
    Firmware

Great quality even if there is a bit more plastic than I would want for $250, at least it isn't cheap, flimsy plastic, but I'd want a little more metal and soft-touch once you get to this amount. The mixamp itself is heavy, solid controls interface, nice click and movement to all things that should click and move -- a very nice piece to compliment the headphones. I really have no complaints this any of the headphones, even the aforementioned materials aren't that big of a deal, but I wanted to point it out all the same. My actual complaint(s) lie with the software. Once you plug everything in and go to update the firmware you simply can't do it. You are stuck with whatever firmware it shipped with. I don't know if that really matters at the end of the day, I un-plugged everything, restarted the Astro software, and when it asked me the next time if I wanted to upgrade I refused and used everything as it shipped. So I'm not really sure what that is all about, but when I researched it more, it seems to be an EXTREMELY common issue. So, if you are fine with not updating these, they are easily a 4-5 star offering. If you want 100% functionality from the physical unit AND software, wait until Astro gets their act together in that regard. Otherwise, the software works just fine. You can adjust EQ levels, assign profiles to the 4 slots and replace the defaults. There is also the ability to go online and download other users profiles. Back to the headphones themselves; sound quality is very nice. There are 4 shortcuts on the mixamp to cycle between and you can setup a favorite profile that you can click to with a single button push. There is a mod pack (sold separately) to alter them from closed back to open back, but in a gaming environment I don't know why you would want to do that as you get noise leak both into and out of the cans. The larger knob on the mixamp controls volume and has a nice weight to it's rotation. The smaller adjusts the balance between audio and mic, with a notch in the rotation at 50% so you know exactly when it's balanced, a nice touch. There are tons of hookups for opitcal, usb, micro, etc etc on the back of the mixamp to connect to multiple devices and streaming interfaces. There is a two position toggle on the back to switch between PC and Xbox, with an illuminated notification on the front to inform you of it's position. I still recommend it even though the software has issues in regards to updating. You can still use them as is, but I'd maybe hold off until they go on sale.

Installation is as simple as plugging in all components as outlined in quick start guide. I found this process to be quick and easy and installed the headset with the audio controller. I am using the headset for PC gaming thus far, but it would be a great option for Xbox One also. The headset is tuned specifically for gaming and the sound quality did not disappoint. I was very happy with the premium audio. The mixamp pro is a very nice tool when it comes to playing multiplayer games with your friends. It allows you to change the volume of your voice chat in relation to the volume of your game super fast. It also allows you to switch between other setups you may have connected to it at the push of a button. One great feature is the fact that you can customize the headset to your liking. They offer different colors and options for their mod kits which is very nice. The one fault that this headset has in my opinion is the fact that it is a little on the heavy side. During prolonged use it can get a little tiring to wear. However, I find this worth the tradeoff to get a quality, well built product. Overall, I'd highly recommend the Astro A40 + MixAmp Pro for gamers who are looking for a headset that offers great sound, nice customization features, adjustability and quality.

I recently purchased this headset 2/24/21 and I must say these are pretty amazing. I’m not too picky when it comes to headsets but these knocked it out the park. FIRST THINGS FIRST THOUGH. - YOU WILL NEED TO UPDATE THE MIXAMP TO THE LATEST FIRMWARE (v. 36797) BEFORE USING THIS WITH YOUR XBOX. THE FIRMWARE (v. 34242 i believe that’s what it is called) THAT IS FACTORY INSTALLED WILL NOT ASSIGN TO YOUR XBOX. THEREFORE THE MIC WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU UPDATE IT. -ASTRO COMMAND CENTER. DOWNLOAD FROM ASTROS WEBSITE NOT WINDOWS MARKET. PLEASE HAVE A WINDOWS 10 COMPUTER TO UPDATE TO THE LATEST FIRMWARE OR ELSE IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO UPDATE. FOR SOME REASON YOU’RE NOT ABLE TO UPDATE, UNINSTALL COMMAND CENTER AND REINSTALL. IF IT STILL DOESNT PROMPT THE UPDATE OR YOU ARE STUCK AT 0%, USE ANOTHER COMPUTER. My setup experience was a huge headache but once I was able to install the latest firmware, my Xbox was recognizing the headset and assigned it to the GT. I was able to use it right after the update. I recommend this headset to someone who has access to computers and is some what savvy.. Not your regular plug and play person.

    Instructions

Not super impressed this was supposed to be a plug in and go headset. After trying to figure it out for two days and dealing with my son’s disappointment I finally found a YouTube video. Turns out my sons Xbox 1 s is an older version and you need an extra cable that you have to buy separately. Let me save you some headache, you need a TRRS cable. If you don’t have this it won’t work with the mix amp pro. Which was the whole reason I bought this headset. It’s the best of the best right? It didn’t even come with instructions or anything that says you need that extra cable. Not to mention you have to plug this into you PC and update it before you can use it.... it was a huge frustration with nothing telling me what to do or how to do it. We ended up skipping the whole mix amp pro and plugging the headset straight into the controller. This works and is easy but it completely defeated the whole mix amp..... good luck to the next buyer!

I love this headset. The comfort and ease of use is great and this headset makes hearing footsteps so much easier. The mic and be placed on either side and it's very customizable with headphone panels and the band.

    Firmware

I’ve experienced A50 gen 4, turtle beach ear force elite 800x, Astro a40 gen 3, and everything in-between. I’m Xbox only so I can’t speak for ps4 or PC. This headset on tournament mode with Dolby surround activated is the best of all for Xbox gaming. I can pin point where footsteps/shots are left, right, up, down and the distance at which they are very quickly. The reason it’s better than the A50’s and all wireless headsets is because they have a popping noise in the speaker every so often, loss of connection from time to time, and scratchiness here and there due to the wireless connection. Wired is better regardless of what people claim and happens to be a bit cheaper, win/win. Cons: the biggest con and why I can’t give it a 5 star is because the party chat mic will not work unless you open the command center on a PC and download the firmware update. You’ll have game audio but if you don’t have a PC you will not be able to chat with friends on your Xbox until you can get to one and update it. I think when you spend $250-$300 on a headset it should be ready to go immediately. It took me a lot of research and a couple hours of frustration to figure this out for myself. Also, there’s no off button. Every time you turn off your Xbox it stays on so when you start your Xbox back up the party chat won’t work again until you switch it to PC and back to Xbox, then it will register your headset and assign it so you can chat. Other than the initial issues with set up, once you get it all updated, it’s phenomenal. So comfortable, mix amp is awesome, and above all the directional sound for gaming delivers on every level. Highly recommend this headset but be aware of what you need to do upon set up. If you have any questions I’d be happy to answer them.

The A40 replaced my 4 year old Stealth 700's which died. I use these mostly on my pc for gaming, chatting on discord, late night movie watching and music. They sound freaking sweet after setting and saving different sound profiles for gaming, movies and music. I freaking love this headset. I can wear them for hours and my skull is comfy and not feeling weighed down. The seperate mic volume control works as it should, haven't had any issues at all. I occasionally use them with my Note 8 cell phone mostly for music and again they sound great but not loud enough for my tastes. Calls are just fine, they hear me, I hear them. Would I have liked the wireless version better? The Mixamp is within arms reach so I'm fine being wired. My only complaint is that for the price they should have included better cables than the cheap looking rubber(?) covered ones, I found some nice braided ones for both the usb and headset cables on Amazon. Over all I am extremely happy with my A40's, I gave them a 4 star rating, I'd go 4.5 if I could knocking just 1/2 star for the cheapy cables.

For over 200$ this should be perfect. I love the mixamp, 10/10 for the mixamp. The sound is great and everything is of high quality. HOWEVER. I think it should have a usb c connection for power and data, not a micro usb, the port quickly becomes lose from regular use, a slight bump now will render my mic off and me having to jam it back into the mixamp. Secondly the micro usb is shorter than it should be, should get 10' at least.

    Cutting Edge Gaming Environment

    Fit on ears

The cream of the crop gaming headphones just got reloaded with the 4th generation of the tournament ready Astro Gaming A40 + Mixamp Pro. The headphones came well packaged and documented in a sturdy “supply drop” style box. Setting up took only a few minutes without the need for downloading extra drivers. The A40 is designed for “marathon gaming sessions" and are “lightweight, comfortable and built to last.” They are easily upgradable with the ability to add Mod Kits which feature synthetic leather noise-isolating ear cushions, a voice isolating mic, a padded headband, and closed-back speaker tags. They also support Dolby Atmos and Windows Sonic on the PC which gives you a competitive edge with full 3D positional audio. The Mixamp Pro is an exponential upgrade from the original Mixamp, featuring 1 full-size optical, micro USB, aux, stream, and even 2 daisy chain ports. The two dials on the top of the Mixamp control the volume and the sound balance between your game’s sound and your teammates’ voices. Two buttons control the switch from Dolby Surround Sound to stereo and the four different equalizer presets which are customizable in the Astro Command Center software. Sound quality is the best I ever heard from headphones even with Dolby Atmos off. Music doesn’t sound great but is better than all other headphones I’ve tried. The A40 headphones are exceptionally comfortable but when I use them for 2 hours my ears start to get sore. The bottom of the headphone rests on my lower ear lobe, suggest if you are looking at the headphones to try before you buy. Microphone sounds crystal clear with a customizable noise gate in the Command Center Software. The only problem I have with the microphone is when I breathe it picks it up and I must move the microphone down a bit. Overall, if you’re looking for a top of the line, portable gaming headset the Astro A40 is a winner.
