    Just what was needed.

First off, it's an inexpensive laptop. With that in mind, all I needed was a laptop for taking on campus to get work done when I am away from home and this does exactly that. As to the critics of the display properties, I found that just playing with the settings greatly increased the performance of the unit. For example, using the AMD Radeon settings app over the Windows settings options. Activating "Virtual Super Resolution" removed nearly all of the motion blur and cleaned up the picture. I would recommend taking a few minutes to play with the other adjustments as well though so it's comfortable for you. You also need to be at a reasonable distance from the screen and be looking at it head-on from a comfortable sitting position, not on an angle. Sitting in front of it with your hands a comfortable distance resting on the keyboard and not leaning into it over the keyboard, so, the proper way. Looking with the screen positioned on an angle (or someone looking over your shoulder) will cause a visual bulb effect (bright spot like a light shining on it) and can be unpleasant to the observer. Again, this is an inexpensive unit, it doesn't have a top of the line display, so you do have to play by its rules, but in no way do I feel I am hindered by it. Updates were no issue. If you feel they are taking too long, plug the laptop into the modem directly with an ethernet cable, average wireless traditionally runs at about half the speed as a hard connection, so make it easier. I had all the updates downloaded and installed in about 30-45 minutes. I was multi-tasking and didn't do the mandatory restart until everything else I wanted was installed so the required updates did not take long on their own. This package came with a backup install disk rather than using a partition on the hard drive in case you need to reinstall everything down the road which I prefer. With the SSD drive, 128GB is a bit, but I don't want any of that wasted on something I may never need. It's the little things that make this deal so nice. Also a bonus that they fit the disc drive into this unit. My only real complaint is the very slick frame of the unit can cause it to easily slide on hard surfaces. A couple of rubber pads on the bottom and I will be set though. It weighs a lot less than most 15.6" displays and is not bulky at all. Even the sound is better than I expected. If you just need something you can carry around and not looking to game or use heavy performing programs, this is a great little, inexpensive machine that can get the job done! A great package for the price!

    Fantastic Budget Laptop

I purchased this laptop with the intention of primarily coding (web dev with PHP/Laravel/Javascript/etc), with very light gaming (Battlefield and such). I use Visual Studio Code with a XAMPP stack and am amazed at how fast this laptop is. I have not tried any C++ code or any compiling yet, but I imagine it would handle it just fine. This was an upgrade from my desktop machine with was also a quad-core (Intel instead of AMD), but maxed out at 2.4GhZ. At a base speed of 3.4GhZ (I believe), this AMD A12 processor is all the power I need, and more. The 128 GB SSD and 8 GB of RAM combo is PLENTY of performance and speed I needed in order to increase my workflow and take it on the go. I know 128GB isn't much, but the cloud and external media sources should make up for the space lost (or, just upgrade the HD at some point). The battery lasts around 2-3 hours, depending on the settings. I have not yet ran it on the lowest settings to maximize battery life, however, its plenty enough for me to get a bunch of work done before needing to recharge( and by then, I usually need a break too). Its very light in comparison to other laptops I've had and stays very cool as well. You can comfortably use it on your lap if you prop your feet up without sweating from the heat. I can't say the same for other laptops I've had. I'm very surprised by the sound as well. For being a smaller, budget laptop, the sound is great and gets loud. I am extremely happy with this purchase and if you're a coder or web developer, don't hesitate to snag it if you need a tool in order to be able to take your work on the go. For $300 ($375 with a wireless mouse, a notebook bag, and taxes all together), I literally did not think I would be able to get such performance for such a small investment. If you're on the fence about getting a new laptop, don't hesitate to snag one of these.

    Just What I Needed

I bought the ASUS X555QA on clearance. In fact, it was sold out. I had to settle for an opened box special. Upon arrival the box was sealed with tape that read "Certified: Geek Squad". The unit was so clean and the box might as well have been factory sealed. Set up was easy peezy for this 65 year old. I did need assistance getting it to tether with my phone for internet access as I am accustomed to but a quick trip down to Best Buy and the Geed Squad had it going in no more than 15 minutes at no charge. I received it a week ago today. I ordered it the morning before. I had the option of paying an extra $36 for overnight delivery but declined. Several hours after order and shipping confirmation UPS sent a message saying there was updated shipping information and I would be receiving the package by 8pm the next day! Shoot, I'll take it. The laptop itself: I am not a gamer so I didn't need a laptop with those speeds. I watch YouTube, read and post on FB, surf the web, and do basic photo editing. I just read an article that pointed out 8 things you should look for in a laptop and this one has 'em all including 8 GB memory, an SSD, and the speed and graphics quality of the AMD A12 processor. The keyboard has a good feel IMO and the screen displays my photos beautifully. It boots up quick and shut down is way faster than my previous Lenovo Thinkpad and HP Pavilion 209. I think I knocked it out of the park and got the best bang for my buck. This ASUS retailed normally at $400. I paid about $275 + ambiguous fees. (Wasn't too pleased with those. Felt ambushed.) From what I just read the X555QA has features and performance a laptop that's more in the $600 range would have, again that 8GB of RAM. I'm more than satisfied with this notebook, elated is more like it. Couldn't be happier! Great choice for this frugal, value oriented, shopper.

Decent, but glaring issue from the beginning

Bought this for my girlfriend today. We like to do casual PC gaming but her previous laptop was going on 8 years old, and we were both feeling it. It had trouble running some pretty basic games (Borderlands 1 and some other games like that). Well so far this computer runs our games just fine. She also uses it for school and such. No issues regarding that either, so far. We're long distance right now, so Skype is also a big part of our relationship. This is where the issues come up. The webcam just refuses to work at all. We've been trying for 3 hours to get it to work and our record so far is 15 minutes, before it cuts to black. Sometimes it comes back on by itself for another minute or so, but it never lasts. We tried Discord and Facebook Video calling as well, both with the same issue. It's definitely the computer and not the applications. Extremely frustrating considering we brought it home too late to go return it the same day. We're trying a hard reset right now to see if maybe we did something wrong from the beginning but things really don't look good so far. It wasn't on sale either so we paid the full $400 for it. Her last computer costed half of that but at least the webcam worked. Definitely a disappointment. Maybe it is something we did wrong but I think in the 3 hours we've been fiddling with it and rebooting it, it's safe to say it's the machine, not the operator.

      Dear Quasartist,

I do understand your disappointment and the inconvenience if you are experiencing issue with the webcam. It is a VGA camera so the resolution is decent. Please make sure WINDOWS Update current. Doing a video-conferencing requires a high-bandwidth internet connection, please make sure the unit has access to an established router and high-speed internet service is working properly since this will definitely affect the performance of the webcam. If you need further assistance, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be happy to help.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

    Excellent Entry Level Laptop

If you buy this, you are not going to be doing any hardcore gaming. This is an entry level rig that actually runs Windows without hiccups (youtube and Excel). So far I've run various Linux distros in VMware on either partition and kept the CPU below 70C consistently. Upgrading the RAM with an 8GB stick was a snap because of the door on the underside and replacing the SSD with larger one wasn't very difficult. If you don't feel comfortable with it then hire a pro or pop in a SD card for added storage. Besides being cheap, the single largest reason for choosing this computer was the keyboard. Among the less expensive laptops that are out right now this had the most comfortable layout for me. This machine is very lightweight and some of this is due to it not having a CD drive and I almost gave it 4 stars instead of 5 but then I thought, "When is the last time that I used a CD drive on any computer?"

Excellent Product - Forget the free download

I am completely satisfied with the ASUS PC, a nice follow on to my ASUS Chromebook, both are excellent. Be very wary of the free Webroot Internet Security download. I received a free trial from BestBuy when I purchased my new ASUS PC. I decided to give it a try and it was a disaster. I installed it yesterday and today my new (as in 3 weeks) PC was partially inoperable and the performance was adversely affected. I was unable to access the tool bar, etc, etc. As soon as I was able to resume minimum control of my PC I uninstalled Webroot, which unto itself was a bit complex. As a one time experience, I would not consider using Webroot if they paid me. Nothing is free and in this case the trial was certainly not worth the effort. My one instance suggest one be to be very, very wary using this product. I in no way recommend it. I am very surprised that it performed so poorly, it does not reflect highly on Best Buy who I have high regard for.

I purchased this ASUS X555QA laptop on 4/27 and I am very pleased with it. I bought it already on sale $100 off, and with a Best Buy $5 reward certificate only paid $294.99. You simply cannot beat this value for a laptop with 8GB RAM and an SSD. It runs very quickly and I am satisfied with the ASUS fit and finish which traditionally has been top-shelf. I highly recommend. I am not a huge fan of Windows 10, so I installed VMWare virtualization software. I am now running Windows 7 as a guest operating system and all my programs in a virtual machine. Long live Windows 7!!

The four stars are for hardware setup. I prefer AMD processors mainly because of the Intel chip vulnerability. Would prefer that new laptops have external batteries, rather than internal ones like tablets. This computer is fast after getting all the Microsoft windows 10 updates completed. This was an open box item, and the qeek squad check proved to be excellent. The ssd hard drive is a little to small at 120GB for storage, but external usb sticks can ease that problem. I have had good experience with Best Buy qeek squad certified products in the past, only problems have been with Windows and Manufactures blootware. Only an experienced user can set up this windows machine off-line without a Microsoft account. This is my first ASUS computer and it appears to be a quality product. I have made changes in the BIOS and will install my favorite Linux OS.

    No Function Lock Is Disappointing

While this laptop offers a good amount of features for its price, I was disappointed by the inflexibility ASUS offers in regards to its function keys and simple commands like screen brightness, volume control, and screen mirroring. Usually you can use FN + ESC to lock the function key bar, but this is absent where found on other computers as a standard. I will be returning this for this reason. The computer has space for a CD drive drive but it lacks it, even though the tech is cheap enough to add in for the $400 MSRP. The screen is standard HD in a time where 1080 should be the standard. YouTube and Netflix constantly stutter and the color quality could be better. Cheaper computers with better looks are out there. I decided to try something new by buying ASUS for the first time. I regret it, but luckily I'm still within the return window.

      Dear Gary,

I certainly understand the inconvenience this may have caused you if the product didn't meet your expectations. The product was not advertised having a CD/DVD drive. However, if this is a requirement or becomes a necessity an external USB optical drive can be connected. Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I would be more than happy to help.

so I was in the market to replace my 6 yr old HP which was a solid laptop but now running a bit slow and crashing from time to time, I was on a budget so I decided to go with the ASUS based on the price, set up was good but did get the black screen a few times but after the updates that is no longer a problem, im not a gamer just use it basic internet searches shopping and e mail so I don't need a lot. I have only had the computer for a day so I will give it a few more days to see if it will work for me, the camera isn't the best but I don't really use that, and no cd but a external one is cheap if I really need it,

I'm definitely not a techie, so for me this is a good laptop. I was on a tight budget when I purchased this but I'm thinking I made a great choice for me at the time. It's far faster than my last laptop so that's been a huge bonus. My only complaint so far is the zero on the keypad is directly under the 2. This is an awkward spot for someone that uses a ten-key on a regular basis. Luckily I don't use this particular feature much at home so it's not that big of a deal. Overall, a good purchase.

I purchased this laptop on sale for $279, and it was well worth it! It was easy to setup and is light as a feather (not really, but it is light). I love the solid state drive which keeps it quiet and cool, starts up in seconds and does what I need it to do. I'm not a gamer, so I wouldn't recommend this if you are one, but it works fine for word processing, e-mails, videos and the usual things that don't drag down a laptops resources. I highly recommend for a beginner or anyone who just needs a dependable laptop.

I bought this laptop to browse the internet and check email. It was very quick and did what needed to be done. I have vision issues though, and the screen was not cutting it. The screen has a white tint to it. You can see okay in a pitch black room, but if there is a little sunlight, it is horrible. There is this glare that does not go away, no matter how many settings you adjust. If it was not for the horrible screen display, I would have kept this laptop. I did return it for one with a better backlit screen. If you do not have eye issues, this screen may not be an issue to you. Like I said, the laptop is super fast for the price.

I purchased for school only. It has a consistent static that emits from the speakers at all times which is annoying. And this is not a fast operating computer so be aware of that before you buy one. The battery never charges fully not sure if that is my settings power saver mode or not. If your just looking for something to get job done without high performance at a low cost it works. But the noise from speakers should be recalled by company for those of us experiencing this issue. And I know I’m not the only customer who has complained about this exact sound from speakers.

Purchased for regular business trips and have been impressed. The monitor is sharp and well sized for a laptop. The A12 processor does a great job of handling most things I threw at it. It was even able to run some older games at decent framerates (I play Team Fortress 2 to unwind). With 8 GB of DDR4, it was able to handle my multitasking and is one of the few I found able to expand to 16GB. The only down side was the small hard drive, but that was easily fixed by upgrading it to a 250 GB SSD. Pros: RAM, Processor and GPU good. Cons: SSD small.

Bought this laptop to give as a gift. When it was unboxed and used for the first time, bottom of screen has a long horizontal "wavelike" blackout of about .25-.50 inches in varied height. Bestbuy refused to accept return even if its still within 30 days, saying that it was "physical damage", therefore not covered in returns. In my opinion, based on how they talked to me--- it seems they were assuming that I was the one who damaged it and was trying to sneak a return. NOT worth buying the piece of junk. Next...

Great product like I said, budget friendly and gets the job done. Only negative thing is the flimsy metal surrounding the keyboard? You’re able to bend it even when just typing. Able to upgrade to 16 GB total RAM aswell and the SSD if you feel like it’s slacking. AMD 12 processor is nice but would be cool to be able to interchange easily if wanted. Question though, I know it’s recommended to upgrade to 16 GB, was wondering why not to 24 GB if you had a 16 GB RAM ready to put in?

Having left Windows for Apple, I’ve noticed that for as much as I love the Apple platform, I still needed a device that was reasonably priced and ran the Windows OS well. Having done my homework, I ventured upon this Asus brand laptop, while it might’ve been a larger laptop than I previously wanted at a “15”6” screen, the Asus X555QA without an internal CD/DVD optical drive, doesn’t weigh as much, and with care it can be a proper device for a student.
