Excellent “basics” pc for cloud gaming

At first I was confused with the words “gaming” and “Chromebook” in the same sentence. From a hardware standpoint, this wouldn’t handle very many modern games at all. However, more and more services are offering cloud gaming - letting powerful servers do the processing and streaming the game to your pc like a Netflix movie. With cloud gaming, this works beautifully. Took it to a local coffee shop with strong wifi service and it performed very well with fairly low latency and garnered attention from a few shop patrons. It’s fairly lightweight and very fast, and would make an excellent daily use pc for a high school or college kid. Google’s suite of data processors and their cloud services make the limited onboard storage a non-issue thanks to the wifi just about every school and business in the world has today. Again, to reiterate, this Chromebook “gaming” pc is for cloud gaming, student level data management, and media consumption. It’s almost a giant tablet with a keyboard. If you are needing something to play The Last of Us or handle a doctoral thesis with onboard computing cycles, this isn’t your computer. That said, I recommend this for parents as a gift for young adults stepping out into the world for the first time. This Chromebook plus a gift subscription to a cloud gaming service is cheaper and lighter than your average gaming rig.

This Chromebook feels durable and really made once you remove it from the box. The contents are just the Chromebook itself, the power cable and I few promotional papers. It powers up super fast and setup is quick and easy. Just connect to a WiFi network, install the update and connect to your Google account. There are few applications pre-installed so you are not having to remove a lot of bloatware. GeForce Now is pre-installed to get you up and running with cloud gaming. Connect to your preferred gaming application, such as steam, and you are good to go. GeForce Now has a free membership but your will need a premium members to take advantage of all of the performance features. I was able to connect my preferred gaming controller with ease and play my favorite Steam games with no issues. The performance was great, and as long as you have a good internet connection it will be lag free. The screen looks great and the fast refresh rate gives you an edge in fast past FPS shooters. The popular movement keys are all highlighted for quick reference. Sound is great through the speakers or connected through headphones. This is an excellent device to get you playing games games at high-end PC levels without the high-end price.

The value did not match the price. I did not think the product justified the price and the off color keys were very distracting.

    More Chromebook than Gaming laptop

When I saw "Gaming" I had high expectations for what this Chromebook would deliver. Apparently, those expectations were a little too high. This was my first experience for a Chromebook, so I was a bit of a newbie in that regard for expectations. Of course that meant Chrome OS so everything we already had didn't work - this meant purchasing Chrome OS versions of games and a variety of other challenges in order to take the gaming experience to this chromebook. The biggest challenge we ran into is that Steam doesn't work well on the Chromebook. Now, I'm still exploring to see if there are mitigation steps or best practices I can apply to get this working well, but it has been a huge disappointment so far. With the popularity of Steam with gamers (like 20M users), I was shocked to run into challenges on a product touted as being for gaming. Overall the Chromebook works fine for other tasks outside of gaming. The touchscreen works great and is a nice feature. The usability is on point with other Chromebooks that are typically used in an education setting. I just don't expect a "gaming" chromebook to be designed more for an education setting than for gaming. My assumption was that it was designed for at home gaming or gaming while traveling, etc. One nice feature is the red around the letter keys that are typically used in gaming. That was a nice feature to easily find them on the keyboard As a parent, the family security options available for the chromebook and on the Chrome OS are great. Securing your child online is a daunting task and there seem to be a lot of tools and monitoring available on the Chrome OS to help navigate these challenges as a parent. This piece was far more intuitive on the chromebook then other aspects. Much of that is more specific to Chrome OS rather than this specific chromebook but it is one of the benefits available using a chromebook and something that could easily swap any parent like me that is trying to protect my kid online. The rest of the specifications are on point and meet the needs of most games that we use so that was a relief. When I ran into the first challenge with Steam, I was concerned we would not be able to get Minecraft however with some googling I was able to install Minecraft on the chromebook. Of course, the cost was in addition to all the other costs I've spent on getting Minecraft installed on other device types but that's the nature of gaming on different platforms so that isn't too uncommon although frustrating. I would recommend the product depending on your needs. The specifications of the chromebook are great. Love the touchscreen and overall usability is great. I just wouldn't purchase this specifically for the purposes of gaming. For this price point, it would be worth doing a bit more exploring to see if something outside of a chromebook would better accommodate the needs.

Solid Chromebook - Respectable For Cloud Gaming

It is difficult to rate this laptop in any meaningful way using a five star system. My bet is that reactions to this laptop are going to be quite polarized - and I think my allocation of four stars will be of little-to-no help for interested consumers. Overall, this is a beautiful and solid Chromebook. The Intel 11th generation Core i5 processor is a nice flex here - and with 8 GB of system RAM this Chromebook is very fast and unbothered by running multiple applications while maintaining countless browser tabs. Startup from the solid state drive is very fast - and the base system consumes less than 50 GB of the 250 GB drive. The touch screen is crisp and bright - but it is also EXTREMELY shiny (so reflections and fingerprints can be distracting) and the basic 1920 x 1080 resolution is going to be a problem for even the most entry-level gaming snobs. I love having a laptop with a keyboard that swivels 360° to allow the device to function as a tablet, but since this ASUS weighs-in at over four pounds, I can't say that it gives off a real tablet "vibe." The sound by harman/kardon is AMAZING - it actually startled me by how crisp and clean and loud it is! Unfortunately, the laptop is cooled by a fan that is just loud enough to be distracting (and it runs almost continuously while the laptop is in use). Finally, the 720p webcam captured images quite well, even in somewhat low light conditions (which I think is rare!). So.....let's talk about gaming. This is being marketed as a "Cloud Gaming Chromebook" - and my own opinion is that the only reason ASUS can categorize it that way is because it supports Wi-Fi 6. With Chrome OS (not Windows), you won't really be relying on the operating system and most processor specs for speed (you won't be downloading games to play directly). Most of the action is in the communication - and I found the wireless performance to be truly stellar. This Chromebook comes with free 3 month trial subscriptions to NVIDIA GeForce NOW’s top membership tier and to Amazon Luna+ and my experiences (with my very fast router) were practically without flaw. Overall, my impression is that this is a beautiful and desirable Chromebook. And I think it functions admirably well with streaming gaming services. It feels solid and well-built, but it is heavy. I really don't like the glassy reflective screen and I find the fan noise to be distracting. Ultimately, I took off one star because of my specific dislikes and because I didn't think the (non-sale) price was justifiable relative specifically to the graphics capabilities (rated as "budget friendly" in a laptop that is not priced accordingly). I would definitely recommend this laptop, but only with my specific caveats. I like it very much, but I believe that reactions, overall, are going to be mixed.

I got this ASUS gaming Chromebook for my daughter. She plays video games CONSTANTLY and her previous Notebook Pro stopped working. This sounded like a good fit. Unfortunately it wasn’t quite what she wanted. She hates playing Roblox on the iPad because she can’t play certain games on there, so she’s not been a happy camper since the prior laptop cashed out. As soon as she tried to play roblox on the ASUS she realized the file needed wouldn’t run and she had to download an app instead. Which then the game thinks she’s playing on a phone or tablet and negates the reason for the ASUS. She also found it easier to use the touchscreen to play the Roblox games just like on the iPad. After the 1st day or so came the laggy comments, and how her Notebook Pro didn’t do that. This ASUS has Bluetooth, yet we could not get her JBL headphones to connect. She’s never had a problem with any of our many apple products so idk what that was about. She has to plug them in every time. Which is inconvenient having to find the cord when you don’t normally have it around. The battery will last about 3.25hrs on a full charge. That’s with constant continuous use. The keys feel nice and are very responsive. The graphics are decent. The sound is good, not great. All around it depends on what you’re looking for. This Chromebook by no means compares to a $1k-$2k+ gaming laptop or desktop. It’s nice for the price range. Ending thoughts? She reaches for her iPad before this ASUS. Even though the touchscreen screen size on the ASUS is much bigger she still prefers the former. There are other games she enjoys playing on this ASUS so it’s not a total bust. But for people with kids who play roblox daily expect many complaints if they’ve played on an actual laptop or desktop prior to this.

The Asus 15.6" Cloud Gaming Chromebook can be fun when used for streaming games, if you're into gaming, presuming you have a high-quality internet connection and a subscription to a cloud gaming service (a free trial was included). I tried streaming a few games on it and they played mostly very well, though there were some network related quality issues at times (resulting in lower quality game video, but still smooth playing though that). The network issues were not the fault of the Chromebook. I tried taking the Chromebook outdoors, and the screen was extremely easy to see, even in direct sunlight (strange enough, black text on screen seemed to cast a shadow on the white background). Also, the fan sound on this Chromebook is quiet, like a smooth soft hum though not silent. The Asus Chromebook flips all the way around to tablet mode, complete with a full touchscreen - the 15.6" screen feels larger in this mode. In tablet mode, you can access the volume and power buttons on the side of the device. This Asus Chromebook might replace my android tablet except that every time I look for an app (Magzter, OneNote, Outlook, as examples) I'm discovering that these apps are not compatible with the Chromebook where they are on my android tablet and phone. Apps like Twitter or Chrome work fine, though, and just with Chrome you can do a lot these days. If anyone's interested, I might have voided my warranty by turning on developer mode, but for example this did let me do things like install Android Studio, as well as other developer tools designed for Linux. Overall, I like this Asus Chromebook and will keep using it - this is my first Chromebook, and I wasn't sure I'd be able to use it but it's great and I would recommend it.

Solid gaming Chromebook. Games are smooth. The Chromebook is flexible. Moved to tablet mode easily. It setups are in minutes. The lost star is due to chrome OS more than the laptop. Chrome offers perks for free games and such yet you can’t take advantage of it when on a child account. Also I’m concerned how long the spacebar and other keys hold out when using it in tablet mode. No protection. Time will tell.

NOT a gaming laptop, misleading "cloud gaming" tit

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This laptop is a joke. Almost any recent computer is a cloud gaming computer if you have a fast enough internet connection and a subscription to a cloud gaming service. This laptop has a garpbage integrated graphics card so it shouldn't even be in the same sentence as "gaming computer." The fact that they advertise it with the "cloud gaming" label is incredibly deceptive and unscrupulous. This laptop cannot play any modern games by itself.
