Ridiculous good entry level laptop for gaming

I purchased this laptop for the black Friday door buster at 899.99.
Let me just say that my review is at a different benchmark then most of these hardcore enthusiasts commenting. I was looking to purchase an entry gaming laptop under 1,000 dollars that had mid range specs to get back into playing blizzard games for their new expansions, like WoW Shadowlands and Diabo 4. Since opening this laptop, it has not let me down for this purpose.
Huge screen, awesome LED keyboard and LED lights under the keyboard. No problem setting it up or downloading my games which are running flawlessly. I had already researched it was 60hz before purchasing but that was its only downside for all the rest of this laptops hardware which is tops at this price point.
If this laptop goes on sale again for $899 and your looking to get a solid entry gaming laptop for a great price get this one. You won't be disappointed.

Great Deal At The Black Friday Price!

I bought this because of the black Friday deal Best Buy had going on. It was by far the best deal on the market for that time. I planned to open up the laptop and take a peak inside, so I did just that. Although some of you would probably like photo's or specs on that, I did not remove any of the static shielding, but I am assuming the SSD and the Memory Modules were generic in order to make the price what it was, including the display. I also ran a check on a popular laptop cooler because some are worried about the size of this machine.
Inside:
-Same chassis / heat piping that is seen in the higher priced models
-Dual fan configuration at each heat pipe
-2 8GB RAM modules, suspected being Hynix
-1 PCie 500GB SSD, suspected being generic
-1 2.5 slot
- Similar configuration and layout that you see in the higher end models with 2060's and up as far as the mobo and PCB
*I did not pull off the heat pipes and examine the MOSFETS but I am going to assume it's a quality ASUS build*
Overall Impression:
Quality build. Solid construction, plastic materials but feels great! The laptop opens up without holding the base and the general feel of the device exudes a quality build. Gaining access to the MOBO was simple and easy, although you should do your best to remember the bolt pattern. The specs are as advertised. It is rocking a 1660Ti and a and everything else that was advertised. I did not get a glimpse of the video memory but when loading Rocket League I did see it accessing the video memory. Was unable to confirm if it was actually running 6GB or not.
Gaming:
I have not had a chance to test this out yet, but I am assuming that it will run everything at a minimum of 60FPS in 1080P. I'll have to report back my findings there, but I did buy this for music production and light gaming. Although the display is 60HZ I'm not too bothered because the deal was great and there are plenty of 144+hz displays for this build available on the market for replacement / upgrades in the future. Also the laptop came with a clean copy of Windows. There was no bloatware to be found.
Tree New Bee Cooler: (or equivalent)
It fits! The open slots on the back plate allow this cooler to help cool the core components. There were no air slots in the middle of the back plate so a cooler with a central fan would not make much sense. *SEE PICS*
Final conclusion:
Great for the Black Friday price! For the current price, I would likely build my own tower with better core components. THIS THING WILL BE EASY TO UPGRADE! *Including the display*
Hope this helps!

This thing ticks every single box for what I was looking for, except for the 144hz panel.
Honestly that really is not a big deal for me, since I don't plan on gaming on this much. Still it is a bit of a buzzkill seeing games running at higher FPS than can be displayed.
For my usage as a productivity machine for editing, and GIS work though this thing is a absolute beast. Barely breaks a sweat under loads that would explode my old computer.
Love the giant screen with the small bezels, love the feel of the keyboard, love the Asus control panel, love the 512 GB hard drive.
Overall I am very satisfied with this for the $900 BF price. If it was an option to pay a bit more for the 144hz I would have, but really I won't need it for my use.
It's honestly probably better to put the money you saved towards a high refresh external monitor.

I bought this mostly because I wanted a be ready laptop, the 60hz screen works for me. It runs destiny 2 just fine. The 2x8 ram is fast and the 512gb NVMe is good enough to get you started and has an open 2.5” slot. Also I like that it’s 17.3” makes it easier to see at a distance. With the aura utility you can set the keyboard as a solid color and have the light bar do all the fading effects. I’d buy it again.

This is a blazing fast machine from the point of view of a non hardcore gamer. I love GTX1660Ti, tested Battlefield V, Wolfenstein : Youngblood, Ace Combat 7, all ran perfectly well.
The keyboard is quite comfortable and RGB lighting is great.
Boots up in 5 seconds flat thanks to SSD.
Coming to the screen, it is certainly not as terrible as it has been painted, brightness should have been 300 nits at least as opposed to 250 nits, but it's not a problem indoors, 60 Hz is not bad either, but more would've been merrier.
ARMOURY CRATE and AURA come in handy for tweaking CPU, fan etc.
The look and feel are certainly desirable.

On paper, everything seems good. I saw this deal on Reddit and the only concern was the screen. But really, that was just the refresh rate.
Now that I’ve booted it up and attempted to update everything to run a benchmark test against my prior laptop, this thing sinks before it even left the harbor.
After getting to the desktop, I could barley read the on screen text. All text looked as if scan lines were breaking things apart and maybe an update would clear things up. After updating, this changed in no way.
I first noticed the ghosting and assumed some driver was messed up, so I updated everything and installed the latest Nvidia drivers, but it changed nothing. It looked so bad, I knew I wouldn’t be downloading anything to play on here, but grabbed user benchmark to run anyway. And that also tanked, benchmark suggesting that the graphics card is performing way below expectations. Being at best a work station, but no longer what I want or need.

Bought this for the black friday price of $899. Just came in on the 5th and I'm ready to return it. First off, the hardware it comes with is great at this price. Sadly, the build quality feels very poor. I feel like I'm gonna break it whenever I pick it up. Like most reviews state, the brightness is very weak in well lit areas and the glare is terrible. The coating on the casing loves the grease in your fingers as does the screen. Straight out of the box the bezel around the screen was peeling off. I pushed it back on and it separated again by the next day. I guess if you plan on using a monitor or only play in dim areas, this is an ok laptop...for 899. I've attached photos where you can see the bezel separating on the lower part of the screen.

I bought this on Black Friday for $899, which seemed like a great deal since the normal price is $1399. However, right away I could tell it seemed less powerful than I would have expected. I ran the Userbenchmark.com test on it and it had terrible results.
I had also purchase a laptop for my son on Black Friday and I got it all set up ahead of time. He is a kid, so I didn't go all out. The laptop I bought for him was also a Black Friday deal - also an ASUS, but from the TUF Gaming line. His laptop with an i5 processor and GTX 1650 gpu (both inferior to what this computer comes equipped with) destroyed this ROG Strix laptop in benchmarks.
Noting that benchmarks aren't everything, I decided to do some real world testing. Just some basic stuff. I played World of Warcraft and Fortnite on both laptops. And used Windows built in Xbox Game Bar to look at FPS.
The ROG Strix jumped between 30-100 FPS in WoW, in a old raid (Kara) it was typically running around 50-60 FPS during big pulls that I dragged into boss fights in an attempt to tax the GPU. I didn't think this was too bad until I did the same thing on the TUF Gaming i5/GTX 1650 laptop. On that machine, it was typically running at 100-120 FPS and on the big pulls it usually stayed above 100 FPS.
In Fortnite, this ROG Strix never got above 60 FPS and would commonly drop lower than that. The TUG Gaming laptop was consistently over 100 FPS at all times.
I contemplated exchanging the ROG Strix for another of the same version, but Micro Center at a Lenovo Legion with an RTX 2060 on sale for a little more (about $1200) and I decided just to upgrade. I brought that machine home and benchmarked it, it's performance trounced the ASUS machine. And, while I have not yet played Fortnite, I played WoW on it tonight and it was consistently hitting the 200 FPS cap that WoW has built in, and I never saw it below 160.
I am not sure if I got a bad rig or if the ASUS product is simply not good when compared to similar offerings (I have had ASUS tablets in the past and liked them a lot, and the other ASUS laptop seems good as well). Either way, I would not buy another ASUS laptop based on this experience.
PS. If you are in the Owings Mills, MD area, don't buy the open box version of this computer as you will likely be getting the hunk of junk I returned.

It was great until now. It has been 4 months since I’ve used this and it was amazing but right now I’m having a lot kf problems. First is that for some reason from time to time the wifi adapter gets corrupted that I have to restart the laptop just to be able to turn on the option. Second is crashing down or force closes my modern warfare. Not gonna lie this was a great laptop but now having this problem just sucks now.

(((NOTE)))
for $1399 you can find much better gaming laptop with much better SPECS. My whole Review as the title says for any price under $1000.
I bought this lovely powerful gaming laptop 9 days ago on a Deal for $899usd. I had it for 4 days so far IT IS the REAL DEAL.
It has :-
i7 9th gen CPU.
1660ti full 6gb GPU.
16GB 2*8.
512gb SSD.
17' 1080p, 60hz display.
1.Silent mode amazing for browsing and watching YouTube with 0 fans sound and very well performance.
2.Performance mode increasing the GPU usage zero lag NO overheat.
3.Turbo mode (has to be plugged in) increasing CPU,GPU performance with loud Fans BUT still zero issues NO overheat.
After a lot of research for a (little bit above Mid-Range SPECS gaming laptop) I really couldn't find anything under $1099 (with the same exact specs including the 1080p,60hz display) so I'm so happy for finding this A+SUS for just $899.
SO FAR I have 0 issue with downloading and playing games on it.
I play PUBG,CS,FIFA, and ForzaHorizon4 on High to Ultra settings with NO issues NO overheat at all. that's all what I like to play (SO don't know about other games).
Hope this review was helpful. THANKS.

This is my first laptop so, I might not have the best background experience with them, but I have had multiple gaming desktops. I bought this laptop on black Friday and got it for about $500 off. Obviously, I couldn't pass on the awesome deal considering what's on the inside. But whether you buy it on sale or not, the specs of the laptop are more than enough to run every game on high without having to sacrifice speed. I also do a bit of music production in my spare time which this works great for as well considering the 16gb of ram. Overall, I'm impressed with the build quality of the laptop as well. Something that I've always been scared of with buying laptops was hinges for the screen. I don't need to worry about that though with this laptop because the thing is pretty beefy. The one thing that I'm going to have to invest in is a cooling pad for when I'm actually using it in my lap, because boy does this thing heat up when playing games. It has yet to heat up to a point where it causes performance issues or to the point where it's unbearable to use on my lap, just annoying leg sweat.

Pros:
Price point, looking for a great gaming laptop that can hold up on AAA titles in high settings. This is it.
Sleek'ish deisgn, there's no getting arount that this is a gaming laptop but even then ROG did great in keeping it at an acceptable size and weight for a 17.3" laptop.
Performance in everyday workloads, be it intense CAD designs or video editing or even your everyday browsing on the web the i7 can keep up.
Cons:
Screen.. ok I know that for the price you can't expect too much more but it'd be great if they offered a 120 FPS screen.
Batterylife.. another thing that is to be expected on a gaming laptop but it must be mentioned that you'll have to carry around your brick to stay plugged to the wall.
Keyboard, this one is a bit on a per user side but IMO the keys are a little too packed together, but you do get the 10 key numebr pad which makes up for it I guess.
Storage, this laptop only comes with a 500gb SSD. On the bright side upgradeablity has improved over the years so its not so much a big problem anymore.
Personal Verdict:
Get this laptop if you can find a good deal, I was able to find it for $850 in late 2019 so it was a no brainer. There are some comparable Laptops offered by MSI that do include a 144hz refresh rate on a 1080 display but there were going for around $1200. This makes for a great mobile workstation for a college student or grad as it can handle most tasks with a breeze.

To begin, I'm not a gamer, so this review might not be fitting 100% to some of the people reading it. I purchased this laptop after my $2500 macbook pro started randomly shutting off and my repair was quoted as the exact price of the laptop.
So far, I love it. It not just looks cool but performance is awesome as well. Not as fast as a macbook with the same specs but it feels incredibly well built. If you are worried about the 60hz screen but are not a gamer or a beginning gamer, the screen quality is great.
Did I mention that the light show that this thing puts on looks super cool?
Overall, it has exceeded my expectations by a lot. Yes it is a bit heavy, but it's 17" laptop that's build as sturdy as anything out there. Since I'm a big guy, this is not an issue. Performance wise it's very very good.

Purchased this laptop a few weeks ago and it's met all expectations so far.
Pros:
- Many power options for performance versus power. Silent mode actually means silent.
- Price for specs is one of the best. Wanted 16gb RAM and a card I wouldn't have to upgrade for a long while. Best price for new specs by far.
- Visually the case and lighting is top notch.
- Bezel is fairly thin, hinges slightly inside the edge so the screen doesn't sit too far back.
- Network, HDMI, power ports all on the back so they're out of the way instead of out the side.
- ROG software actually seems useful instead of bloatware
Cons:
- Size/Weight might be a negative for those wanting ultra portability.
- No camera if needed.
- Power button LED stays lit while on (I'm reaching for things here)

Have owned this laptop for 10 days or so, and have to say it's actually really good. I know is disappointing and frustrating that BB doesn't really specify the refresh rate of the screen (60Hz) and how probably many of us (including me) bought it thinking that it was 120 or 144Hz. But STILL for a 60Hz laptop is actually pretty good price for only $899.
You can run almost every AAA game at High Settings and reach some solid 60fps.
The build quality is not bad, and i personally really like the RGB lights at the bottom of the laptop it's a nice touch.

I bought this laptop while it was on sale, shipping weight was 10.8 lbs. I got the laptop but it would turn off when unplugged from the adapter, I wondered the problem. Scouring the internet I ended up uninstalling drivers, restarting the laptop 20+ times trying to find the problem until after an update i received a BIOS screen asking me to make sure my battery was at least at 20%. I then knew there was REALLY a problem because the laptop had been plugged in for 12 hrs, which should have been at the very least sufficient for the update. i decided against taking out the screws, and took the laptop back to best buy. I am in the process of receiving a new one in a few days, this time with a shipping weight of 12.6 lbs. I’m hoping the extra pound is the battery, but who knows. maybe i’ll have another problem with the next one, but hopefully everything will play out smoothly. Do not buy this laptop anything over 1000, the 60hz screen is not worth paying more.

Let me first start by saying that this is the 80w variant of the gtx 1660ti. It's a FULL 1660ti NOT a max-q.
This thing is a STEAL. It's a 60Hz screen, but it looks great. Viewing angles are fantastic, and colors look great. This laptop runs in dual channel 8gb sticks in each slot for a total of 16gb. I love how this laptop is simple and all black. It doesn't scream gamer. I was playing Red Dead Redemption 2 last night and it was playing around 45fps at slightly higher settings at 1080p. Temps hovered around 85 degrees Celsius.
Laptop is all plastic and it's very annoying to get the back panel off to add an HDD or upgrade the NVME SSD. Make sure you are very gentle...otherwise you might break off the plastic tabs holding the bottom cover to the laptop. Other than that... upgrade ability is very simple.
The plastic is ridged, but it's still plastic. However, at $900... YOU WILL NOT DO BETTER THAN THIS LAPTOP. I read on slickdeals that people think this laptop would be a "steal" if it was 144Hz instead of 60Hz... or if it has Thunderbolt 3 (which it does not have Thunderbolt 3). However, I challenge people to find a $900 gaming laptop with a 9th gen i7, 16gb of ram in dual channel, a GTX 1660ti for $900.
Overall this laptop is amazing! I think this laptop benchmarks the same as most RTX 2060 laptops.
