I was looking for a laptop that would be of sufficient capacity/performance to run Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 and 2019 and AutoDesk 3DSMax 2019/2020. I also wanted Ink support (pen) and touch screen for some development projects I'll be working on. I'm very happy to report this laptop have performed flawlessly with my development tools, it's fast, has great battery life, and very nice display (important for my 3DSMax work and color accuracy). The GTX1050 2GB dedicated video processor has no problem working with my 3DSMax project including the Arnold renderer. I'm not a fan of track pans and disabled it and use either a pen device and/or a 3DConnexion wireless mouse. I did have to get a USB-C Ethernet adapter so I could plug into hardwire ports, but the wireless that comes with is also very good/fast. I don't do a lot of gaming on this laptop, mostly flight simulation with Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D and Laminar Research Xplane 11 and soon to be Microsoft Flight Simulator ... I get good FPS with those flight simulators even at 4K which was amazing!

ASUS, the very best and second laptop I have ever owned. It also the fastest laptop I have ever used. I don't use it for gaming, so just fast is what my old unit was not. May write a book on it I would be my third. So far I love it!

Premium Hardware let down by poor quality control

    |
    Posted .

I purchased this laptop to replace my wife's 10yr old 21" HDX 9000 (aka. Dragon) Laptop which has been a fantastic piece of kit but feeling the effects of time. Before purchasing this ASUS, I did cross-shop with the HP Spectre x360 however, my HP experience with several newer laptops has been horrible and I still see enough 1-star reviews on the Spectre that confirm HP continues to put form before function with respect to thermal design (i.e. high spec HP's tend to overheat because of slim packaging and their reliability and usability suffers) so I removed them from consideration. I've also had good experience with ASUS hardware in recent years (routers, monitors) such that I have some trust in their reliability/durability which was enough to sway me into making this purchase. The primary use for this new ASUS Q536FD is photo and video display and editing which it, unsurprisingly, handles with ease. The spec sheet on the laptop compares well with competitors where you can expect to pay anywhere from $100-1000 more for the same (and in some instances, less) hardware. Functionally, the ASUS is everything it should be at a decent price however, I can only muster up a 2-star/Fair rating on the basis of a few things that we've found unforgivable; #1: Straight out of the box when you open the screen on this ASUS, the branding stickers and etchings are tragically crooked! I can get past the stickers because they're removable but there is an obviously misaligned/crooked "harman/kardon" branding on the right side of the keyboard that is etched into the chassis and the only option to look past that is to cover it with a sticker. This issue wasn't just isolated to a single device either - the replacement device we received due to issue #2 below was even worse. I understand this sort of aesthetic issue may not bother some folks at all but first impressions last and this is an instantly bad one for a lot of folks. As an Engineer, the etching serves as a constant reminder that ASUS can't write straight and/or has poor quality control. For the folks that think I'm being pedantic/OCD about this, I've no gripe with you marking this review as unhelpful. #2: Creaky hinge... ugh. The left hinge was unbearably creaky after 2-3days of initial and minimal use and seemed to be temperature dependent. For a 2-in-1 device, the hinges are an especially critical component so Best Buy thankfully offered us a replacement device which currently does not have this same issue. #3: Tablet mode issues - rotation in tablet mode is hit and miss and will not rotate correctly for the laptops orientation leaving you looking at an upside down image until you swivel the screen through to laptop mode and back again. Also, if resuming from sleep in tablet mode, the on screen keyboard disappears (the outer frame is shown but no keys are displayed) and you'll have to repeat the same steps as above. Really frustrating but if I had to guess, this is likely a Windows issue more than ASUS but in either case, for the end user it ultimately doesn't matter and detracts from the overall experience (for the record, the Windows OS was up to date). Having only had the device ~2 weeks, I can't speak to durability, reliability or support from ASUS but putting them aside for the moment and ignoring the issues I've outlined above, the device is just fine - it mostly looks, feels and functions like a premium device and we'll likely end up keeping it but if ASUS is truly "In Search of Incredible", a good start would be to look in the fundamental places like quality control.

      Dear Windza,

We appreciate you taking the time out to share your review with us. I am pleased to hear that the computer is everything it should. I do however see where you did have a few issues which I would happy to assist with. What I can do is to have your reports on the branding aesthetics and creaking hinges forwarded to our relevant department so they can look into in. As for the switch between tablet and notebook mode, you can try updating your FlipLock driver here: https://www.asus.com/us/Laptops/Q536FD/HelpDesk_Download/ . That driver aids with making the transition more smoothly. Please feel free to contact us at customerloyalty@asus.com and use the link to this review as a reference so we can discuss this further or visit the Asus live chat support 24/7. We look forward to hearing from you, have a great day.
      Thank you for choosing ASUS!

so to be fair, it looked appealing at first. Nice sleek design, minimal bezel, and the display is very nice, crisp and clean. The screen is actual glass. this is unfortunately my only compliment. Power button is conveniently placed in the perfect spot so that you will absolutely lean on it and turn it off and lose everything you have opened when you carry/walk with it. Just brilliant... touch pad is pure garbage. EVERYONE has the same issue. It will seize up, stall as you use it and zoom in and out during scrolling. a lot of times it just deactivates completely. you'll have to restart it to use the touchpad again. Software I use Chrome: mousepad causes the curser to seize/stall. locks zoom, zooms in and out when using two-finger scroll. Autocad 2020 - CONSTANTLY freezing. anything you do causes the curser to stall, fans running on max. NOTHING else is running. the file is 1.5MB Sketchup 2019- Stalls all the time. Cannot handle a 2MB file. Copy+paste occasionally causes the program to just crash. Adobe Creative suite- illustrator, photoshop- lags unbelievably. MS Word- crashes on a regular basis. All the icons turn white, and "CTRL+" dialog fills the screen. dialog boxes turn white but you can still click on them. Blue screen of death is the norm. Conclusion: graphics card cannot handle a 4K screen using anything beyond web browsing. if you switch to a lower mode, say 1920x1080, then everything is fuzzy. Lots of hype, but ZERO performance. my 7 year old macbook performed better in sketchup and AutoCAD than this. Unfortunately, asus takes 2-4 weeks to repair and that means no work OR buy another laptop in the meantime... so its now just thrown to the side like the trash it is, they should have a promotion, "Buy1 get one free" to compensate for the absolute nightmare this purchase has been. first and last asus.

      Dear nameless,

Thank you for your review. I'm sorry to hear that you have been having numerous stability issues with your device, please accept my apologies. All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control, testing and inspections. What you've experienced was not intentional or representative of our brand. After backing up all your data, I recommend doing a clean installation of Windows 10. After Windows 10 reinstalls and you finish the automatic Windows updates, please also update your BIOS and all your drivers .

Your machine is well within specifications for all the software programs you listed trouble with and after this process you should see stability return. I've included links to instructions and downloads below. If none of these suggestions work for you, please reach out to me at cl-lane@asus.com and include case #N190927770 in your email for reference. I would like to help you resolve this issue completely.

I bought this computer last year when it just came out, for a much higher price ($1600). A little over a year passes and the thing just stopped working.. RIGHT AFTER THE WARRENTY! I get a blank black screen. It turns on, I can hear the fans, the screen obviously works cause I can boot up the bios menu, But anything after that, windows does not boot. Screen is just blank. Ive done EVERYTHING to trouble shoot this problem I.E: connecting to and external monitor, static flushing, draining the battery. Ive been trying to look all over the internet for a solution. The only thing i can find is that the motherboard is toast. This isnt cool, i loved that computer and loved asus. But i now i cant trust that company.. Tech support is awful, i cant even get through to them, and now im left with is a $1600 paper weight, and now i have to buy a whole new laptop in just a little over a year later. I would never go through the trouble of writing this review and taking a picture if i myself was the cause of this problem, but people have a right to know before they buy this trash.

I love everything about this laptop, the touchscreen is nice, the build quality is superb, the processor and GPU give you tons of power and the ability to switch to the igpu can give you many hours of battery, but my main issue is that the screen itself has extreme color banding. This is what I expect on a 100 dollar budget laptop, not a over 1500 dollar machine. This really soured my experience with it. Maybe I got unlucky but this just ruins the overall experience and premium feel.

Based on the specs I purchased the computer to replace a 4 year old Asus (non SSD) to edit photos and the occasional video. It locks up every time I use Photoshop. I have tried multiple configurations using the GeForce graphics card and / or the Intel on board graphics. I've reset the computer multiple times. Nothing works. I've included a photo of the error message. Otherwise it is a fairly fast computer. Very disappointed Returning to Best Buy.

So, I had purchased this laptop due to an unfortunate experience with a parallel Dell Inspirion that I had also bought from Best Buy. Please feel free to search for that review. Simply put, I am happy with this purchase, but this computer is far from perfect. Pros: * Lightweight. * SSD and hardrive gives speed but a lot of storage space. * Screen is fantastic! Colors and brightness are superb. * Touchscreen. * Startup is fast as it should be with a SSD. *Processing speed is fast. *Dedicated video card. * I think the battery lasts long enough considering the screen resolution. Estimate at least 6 hrs on normal desktop applications like word, etc. Neg * Being that it is light there is a lot a light plastic parts which could be slightly easier to damage than some other laptops I was looking at. * The track pad is not great. Sometimes it does not register finger touch adequately. * The laptop appears slightly uneven when placed on flat surfaces. Can be some wobble while typing. * Even though it has a dedicated video card it is only 2G. In summary, for the price, screen, and storage I am very happy with this laptop. I am using it for school and for work and it does the job well. I really don't have time to game but tried a BattlefieId 4 and it performed well on the top settings. I do recommend getting some sort of accident/performance protection for these modern touch devices as even though they are cool you can tell they may be susceptible to damage.

I got this laptop for cheaper than the marked price because it was an open-box item. Still had the plastic on it and everything, and I saved about 300 dollars because of this. If I had to go back and buy this laptop at full price, I absolutely would. It has an amazing 4k IPS display, no screen defects and it's super bright. The color accuracy is almost perfect. One of the best displays I've seen in a laptop (or in general). It's also very well made and feels quite durable. Has a bit of weight to it but that's easily forgiven as it's pretty slim and packs quite a few features. I love the keyboard, trackpad and infrared camera for Windows Hello. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this laptop for gamers just because it's not geared towards gaming. However, with that being said, it still gets the job done quite nicely if you lower the resolution to 1080p or 720p. It gets rather warm when it ramps up but that's to be expected. It handled most modern games I've tried at 1080p just fine. I even tried running the new Modern Warfare and it was more than capable. Overall I'd definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a powerful, portable and feature rich notebook. And it's definitely up to the task for some light gaming, too.

I've used Asus since building computers and using their motherboards. I've always been satisfied with their product. When buying this computer, I was considering the Microsoft Flip, as well, and the Asus Gaming Computer, since I've already had two of them. This was the obvious choice for me without going over budget. Everything worked the first time. I love the flip feature, and that it is small and portable. I do a ton of photography and photo editing with products that use up a lot of bandwidth and space, and it isn't unusual for me to have an editor open and two browsers going at the same time. This guy handles it all wonderfully! and the SD card reader works like a dream! Love it and would highly recommend it as a mighty but little workhorse!

I've grown up on Asus laptops in the past decade while steering away from HP ones fraught with heat issues. Right off the bat, I love the brushed metal body and the Pantone touchscreen on the interior of this laptop. The color accuracy of the 4k screen especially helps with photo editing. I recently swapped out the built-in SSD for a larger one, but the first one didn't give me issues. Performance was snappy. I also owned an open-box Inspiron 7573 for a brief time. While the Inspiron frequently felt warm, had its fans on audibly, and stuttered quite a bit, I for sure experience far less of these issues on this Zenbook Flip 15. (Not sure if I can attribute this difference to open-box quality items or brands.) I personally wished the exterior build of this laptop matched the premium interior. Don't get me wrong, the build quality is great. The cover has a matte finish that has very, very little but still noticeable flex. The ergolift hinge is great for dissipating heat, but the fans are on the back of this laptop. Heat may escape up your screen. The glossy hinge also tends to creak a bit, but it still seems to hold up well. I wish it was made from a more hefty material. All in all, a great premium yet lightweight 16in ultrabook that packs a good amount of power for light gamers and creatives.

Asus builds nice stuff, being a gamer I’ve been buying this brand for years and know they build a quality product . . . they take pride in their brand name and customer’s experience. This particular model, based on pricing, is a great buy. CPU, RAM, 4K, m.2 drive, and dedicated GPU covers the whole package for much less than the competition’s offerings. The 4K touch display is particularly nice, -bright and responsive. Build quality is excellent as I would expect from Asus, as well as the battery life. Overall a great find among the many offerings at this price point. Add to all this the fact that this model is a 2 in 1 and you have a great product for your hard earned laptop budget. Only con is product weight, this will not be the thinnest or lightest, but in return you get the larger display, reasonable cooling (something others cut back on to reduce size and weight) and a purposed GPU. Not overwhelmingly heavy, but if your looking for a tablet only like experience in these areas you may wish to handle an unboxed sample to confirm it meets you needs. -a.

I did a really long search for the right laptop. I wanted to buy direct from ASUS because they've got some advanced stuff that was intriguing. Then, when it was time to buy, most of my top options were not available from any retailers, including the ASUS site, itself. This was a middling compromise. I didn't want to wait much longer for the shiny new ones to be back in stock. Props to the other reviewer who determined that this is a BB-exclusive model and exactly which main-site model it's most similar to. You should definitely shuffle through the other reviews here on the other ASUS options before purchase. The reason this laptop has me worried is because, on the start-up screen, there's always been glitchy graphics popping around the screen as the computer wakes back up. It has me so concerned that I changed the power settings so that the computer will go low-power, but won't really shut down unless I do so manually. Additionally I was unsure of how to wake the computer back up when it was idle for long enough and it was, in fact, the power button. It keeps everything open but seems to need to be completely restarted when waking it up? So I just changed the power settings. The power button itself is tiny, like the button on the side of a phone. I'm hoping it doesn't wear out easily. There is the standard ASUS bloatware. I'm not an advanced-enough user to determine which of those things it's safe to uninstall so I've mostly left it, like I did with my last ASUS laptop. It takes a few extra minutes at the end of each restart to close out the programs that are running for... seemingly no reason? But I just deal with that. I use a separate keyboard via USB so the weird keyboard isn't much of an issue for me but, just as a warning, it IS a weird keyboard. The directional keys were made super tiny (even though there's extra space around them that could have been put to use) and the number pad is in a weird arrangement. Zero isn't at bottom-center, it's at bottom-left, so if you use the number pad a lot, that will take quite a while to get used to. Overall I'm happy with it, as I was with my previous BB-purchased ASUS computers (this is my third). But I'm glad I got the Geek service plan because that start screen does have me a bit worried. It makes a bit more noise when gaming than I expected, but I was also prepared for it to get hotter than it does. I feel like a worried parent, aiming a tiny fan at my keyboard while I play lol. It's been almost two months and it does what I need it to!

    Asus Q536 Review

I was torn between replacing my 2012 macbook pro with another Macbook, Dell Xps15 or Asus Zenbook pro. I went with this laptop as it has all the specs I was looking for and lots of storage for my photography. After using it for almost a week I'm still on the fence about. The battery life has been way less than the 9 hours rated, which maybe is expected with a 4k screen, the USB c port is not a full thunderbolt 3 4 lane port to my knowledge and the Ssd is only SATA, not NVME like the other laptops inward choosing from. I must say for the price it does pack a great amount of features, very light weight and the screen quality is amazing. As long as you are ok with the drawbacks you will be happy.

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro, a Surface Pro 4, and now this laptop. I am an engineering student and needed a windows computer for some of my class work and my SP4's screen was a little too small for me while on travel for work. This laptop is very fast, quiet, and a beautiful bright screen. The only real issue I have is with the trackpad, it is just bad. It sometimes stops moving and you have to give it a second and try again, or it is over sensitive and picks up a hovering thumb while typing. I have updated all the drivers, cleaned the pad, and tweaked all the settings with no change. The only approach that works currently is to disable the mouse and use an external device. I suggest against the Bluetooth mice as Bluetooth is also hit or miss with this laptop. I don't mention this issue is the title as it has greatly improved since the latest windows update (may be an OS issue vs driver/hardware issue). I reached out to ASUS customer support for help and will update my rating after I hear back from them.
