Customers are delighted by the picture quality, color accuracy, and HDR capabilities of the 28" IPS LCD 4K UHD monitor. Many appreciate the sturdy stand and its adjustability, while also noting the monitor's affordability. However, some users point out the limitations of the 60Hz refresh rate and the inadequate built-in speakers. The monitor's overall value proposition is considered strong despite these shortcomings.

    Good Mid-range Gaming Monitor

In the world of PC Gaming monitors there are 2 camps. On one side, resolution is king, on the other, refresh rate is king. This 4K IPS gaming monitor from Asus goes the route of resolution with Full 4K resolution in an IPS panel with some basic HDR capabilities. It really is amazing how much comes packed into this monitor. Features: - 4K Resolution 3840x2160 - IPS panel - HDR (High Dynamic Range) - AMD FreeSync - Simple design - Headphone jack - Displayport 1.2 input for PC - Multiple HDMI inputs PROS: - 28” 4K monitor with HDR for under $400. - IPS type panel. Unlike the older TN style panels, IPS has a MUCH wider viewing angle so the screen won’t dim if you are looking at it from an angle. - FreeSync. While it’s too bad the monitor only supports 60hz, it does support the FreeSync variable refresh technology to eliminate screen tearing between 40 and 60 hz - Multiple HDMI inputs is a nice touch when you consider this monitor can easily be used for console gaming. If you have Two 4K compatible consoled, it’s nice that you can keep them both connected. CONS: - Only 60hz refresh. But this is what you get in this price range. There aren’t any 4K monitors with 120-240hz refresh. You either get resolution or refresh, not both in this price range - HDR capability is basic. Not all HDR is created equal and the overall HDR peak brightness is on the low side. Console HDR content will look OK but not a huge improvement. - The 5ms response time, while not bad, is nowhere near the 1-2 ms response time that many other gaming monitors have. Another trade-off for resolution here - Conclusion: An affordable 4K IPS monitor with a decent response time and some entry level HDR capabilities. If you are into fast paces first person shooters, racing games, or anything where you need super-fast response times and as many frames per second as possible, this may not be the monitor for you, but if you are a gamer or movie lover who enjoys whatever they are playing at 60 fps with some good looking HDR to boot, you should strongly consider this monitor.

I have recently gotten back into PC gaming with the acquisition of my awesome new Asus ROG Zephyrus gaming laptop (which is the best laptop I have owned for any reason hands down, and I have owned A LOT). It is awesome for a lot of games and especially when I'm on the road, but I really wanted to get back into RTS games and flight sims like Elite: Dangerous and the revamped Microsoft flight simulator. Both genres really benefit from a larger screen and 4k resolution. So far I'm tickled pink with this monitor. Elite looks absolutely gorgeous in 4k, as does MS Flight Sim. My laptop fans even help with the immersion in MSFS by making it sound like I'm actually piloting a very loud plane! It takes a lot to drive 4k with all the bells and whistles turned on. I haven't noticed any tearing of the images except while playing ED: Odyssey but I think that has more to do with the wonky launch of the expansion and not the monitor (though the monitor is only 60hz). The built in speakers are nothing to write home about but I have surround sound headphones for gaming so that really isn't an issue. This weekend Im going to try to fry my RTX 3070 card in my laptop by seeing if I can drive both the 4k screen and the 2k screen on my laptop at the same time. I would like to have the laptop and keyboard available for some of the mining and exploration resource websites while tooling around the galaxy. Hopefully the laptop doesn't give me the immersion of a Frame Shift Drive explosion! Wish me luck.

I really like this monitor. I found its array of setting adjustments allowed me to pretty much set it up how I liked. The 4k resolution (I used 3840 x 2160) looked great especially streaming 4k content. Day to day usage for docs, surfing, etc. all worked well. Also, I had no issues with any games I tried with 60Hz refresh rate – but I am not a huge gamer and most games I play probably would be considered pedestrian. If you are looking for a nicely priced 4k monitor – this is a nice option. Could not be easier to put together – just screw in base to stand and you are ready to go. 9-foot power cord is nice with an in-line brick saving that precious space on your power strip. Has adjustable height/tilt/swivel making it extremely easy to get in perfect position for viewing. You can also turn screen from landscape to portrait. I do not know how much I would ever use the portrait position for viewing but it did come in handy as it made it much easier to connect cable(s) and power cord as all connections face downward. Having 2 HDMI and 1 DisplayPort connection options are nice. Initially I hooked up using provided HDMI cable – turned on laptop and was ready to go, but I had already been using external monitor so that Windows 10/graphics card setup had been done. I then tried connecting using micro-DisplayPort and again it was picked up automatically. Both using 3840 x 2160 resolution. Matte black screen provides virtually no glare. All adjustment controls are on back of right side. I found that a tad cumbersome initially, but I got the hang of the little joystick. But depending on your setup this could be an issue - as I could find no software download on Asus site for this monitor – so you must be able to access the controls for any setting changes. Bezel is acceptable thickness Built-in 2w speakers are a joke. I tried to use the headphone jack to drive my external speakers as much easier connection than using my laptop jack – but it just would not put out any sound. Having ability to lighten dark scenes/games is a nice option but none of my attempted screen prints really showed it. Also having an option to add a crosshair to your games was nice too. Make sure you go to Asus site and download driver. 3-year warranty I had an issue in that most of the OSD options were greyed out/not accessible. I finally determined that if I had HDR turned on – no options, if HDR turned off – options were accessible. Not sure if this is global or only a problem with my Dell G7 7700 using a NVIDIA GForce RTX 2070 graphics card? Overall a nice option not limited to gaming and worth a look - 4.5 stars.

This monitor is very easy to recommend with its excellent color and response. Setup is very easy and most settings are perfect from the factory. The included cable makes getting up and running even faster. The 4k output is crisp and looks great, even at close scrutiny. The best feature, and the one most will be after is the inclusion of Freesync and Adaptive Sync. Which is implemented very well, and is awesome to include both options to support either of the manufacturer's (Nvidia or AMD) tech. While testing out a few games I was unable to see any drop in my frame rate at all. Super impressive and an excellent feature that anyone playing games should absolutely prioritize for their next monitor purchase. Pros: Freesync and Adaptive Sync support, nicely designed, easy setup, great color Cons: I do wish it supported 120hz, but that's not a huge problem, especially when targeting 4k.

    Best Value 4K Monitor

I`m by no means a pro gamer and thus prefer the top visual graphics that my console/PC can output so I`ve looked at nearly all the 4K 60FPS monitors out there and returned my fair share to which I`ve finally found the perfect monitor here with ASUS for what I`ve been looking for! Firstly, the aesthetics of this monitor instantly set it at the top of the pack as the ASUS quality shines instantly upon just setting the monitor up. There is definitely some heft to it and the stand is probably the most sturdy I have tested out of all the monitors I`ve used. The solid base is much my preference over the wide feet that take up a large portion of my desk and ASUS ensured that the base was well made and sturdy since users would be adjusting the screen as it allows for nearly every orientation possible. Then the other aspect that sets this monitor apart is how visually pleasing it is sitting on a desk as my desk is set up to expose the back of my monitors as mine is not simply pushed up against a wall so this was where this monitor really stood out among the rest as ASUS actually spent time on what the back of the monitor would look like! The aesthetics are not the only place this monitor excels as the actual performance is top-notch as well! I will say first that I am personally a fan of saturated colors and peak brightness and feel that most are to which this is why display model TVs at stores are always set to peak brightness so even if "professional" review sites may ding monitors for oversaturation and "unreal colors" you more than likely will prefer that setting to which I love what ASUS has done with this monitor in regards to this for it`s "Scenery Mode." However, there are numerous modes you can set the monitor in if you prefer standard or "Cinema Mode" and the unique aspect was that it had specific presets already for gaming including FPS and RPG versus the typical "Gaming" preset that nearly all other monitors have so this just shows that ASUS was aware that not all gaming is similar and that different game types benefit from different settings. ASUS furthers this gaming component in that it includes various "GamePlus" aspects such as Crosshair, Timer, and FPS Counter. With most monitors in this range since they are similarly spec`d you won`t find much difference, but upon actually using this monitor you can definitely see the greater vibrance in the colors and even though it may only be 350 nits it definitely punches above its weight class in that category compared to its competitors in the same range. Overall, I just can`t praise this monitor enough and after testing numerous 4k monitors and scouring Reddit and various other message boards I definitely have found my final monitor I plan on using going forward. I would not hesitate to recommend this monitor to anyone as it fits every box in this price range and even well above it both in the visual aesthetics and actual performance.

Review of Asus 28” IPS WLED 4k TUF Gaming VG289 Monitor First, a little background… I have been running a competitor’s 27” 2k monitor and have been very happy with it. It has a decent amount of real estate and after years of running regular full high def, I thought it was a great solution when running to a larger size screen. All the items on the monitor looked good, not any noticeable pixilation and I was happy for a couple of years. Now, to the focus of this review! As soon as I hooked this thing up, I was blown away by the colors, brightness and of course the resolution! I couldn’t believe how clear everything was right away without any adjustments at all. Asus did a great job setting the defaults up for a regular, fairly brightly lit room. After telling Windows to let me see things at 100% size (instead of its default 150%) and using it for a while, I ended up settling on 125%. I realized that the smaller size made things just a bit hard to see at a normal distance. This isn’t a problem once you get into a game, setting a few at maximum resolution allows a HUGE amount of gameplay to be seen at once. Menus and control panels are nice and tucked away and there is so much viewable area that I am blown away by it! My only complaint is that I had to reprogram my mouse so it didn’t take me too much effort to move all the way across the screen! I am still finding that I lose track of the cursor once in a while. I can’t find a single thing to say against this thing. I love the joystick for changing things, no more trying to figure out which button I am pressing on the back while making changes. There are so many adjustments I can do on this also, and that joystick lets me do them quickly and easily! I would imagine that other manufacturers will be copying that feature soon as it really solves the problems with back-of-the-monitor controls. I haven’t used the tilt feature, except to make sure it works, I could see someone stacking a few of these side by side and using them that way for a huge screen. The ability to move it up and down is really nice since I have it set as my main monitor on my Dell G7, so it is aligned with the bottom edge perfectly. It makes moving between the screens easy since they have the same bottom edge. Overall, I am very happy with this monitor, 4k has changed my computer use! I thought 2k was great, I am now wondering how I could ever go back! If you have the money, you will not be disappointed with this thing. It supports AMD FreeSync and I have seen no tearing or other visual anomalies while using high quality settings on several games. I am continually tweaking the settings to get the adjustments just the way I want, but have noticed that I haven’t touched those much in the last couple of days. I am very happy with this thing and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone looking for a true upgrade to their computer’s video output.

Monitor works and was excellent edition to my gaming setup. It replaced my old monitor which broke, and allowed me to try the display port cable for first time. When my second monitor failed i purchased a second of these and am not using the display ports fully. Monitor is pretty bright and works well.

ASUS knocks this out of the park on this display! There’s so many features packed in this affordable gaming monitor! Taking this out of the box, you’ll notice the build quality is great and the stand is extremely simple to assemble and the adjustability is fantastic. This is a very well rounded display that is great for use every single day in whatever you need to throw at it. From gaming to spreadsheets, video editing to watching a HDR movie, this monitor can do it all from work to play. The 4K 60 Hz IPS 5ms panel in this monitor really comes to life when you start to push it. It’s got great color representation, the 178 degree viewing angels are appreciated, and the numerous presets, adjustments, and GamePlus features are very welcome. I had no problem pushing full 4K @ 60 Hz over HDMI and I had no problem enabling HDR mode. I ran numerous tests on the monitor and it passed every single graphics test without issue. Great clarity, color differential, sharpness, response time, and uniformity. The included speakers won’t do anything justice but they are handy for the occasional video clip or notification sounds when you’re not running a gaming headset. For the extreme gamer that is used to gaming at 120 HZ or higher, this may not check all your boxes, but if you need a budget friendly, well-rounded 4K, “can do it all“ monitor, you won’t be disappointed with this purchase.

The picture quality and refresh rate are great, you have very dark blacks and superior colors throughout the color gambit. The Stand is very sturdy (although I have since mounted my screen to the wall). Although this screen is geared towards gaming, and it does handle gaming very well, it is also great for watching movies and editing video and pictures.

The Asus 28" IPS 4K gaming monitor is a sturdy and stylish piece of hardware. The base rotates and has about a 6" of vertical travel, enough that you can use the monitor is either portrait or landscape mode. It comes with 2 HDMI ports and one Display Port 1.2 port. Strangely, the box includes a Display Port cable, but no HDMI cables. Says something about the target audience, I guess. The adjustments are on the back right hand side and there's a really nice joystick to let you select various monitor settings. I especially liked the blue level setting (to reduce eyestrain), and the shadow boost technology is a great idea. I hate playing with gamma settings to try to see what's in the shadows with resulting blown out highlights. It's an IPS panel, so it has to be very responsive and the 4K resolution is a thing to behold with good input. Unfortunately, the frame rate is limited to 60hz at high settings, so it may not be great for all gamers, but for light gaming and standard PC use (e.g. photoshop, excel, browsing, youtube, etc.) it's a marvel.

The quality of this monitor from everything from the display to the construction goes far beyond its low price tag. First off, I was taken aback at how heavy the box was but once I opened up the contents I understood why. The monitor, the monitor arm, and the stand are built incredibly well and the construction rivals monitors 2-3 times the cost. The base has a nice, large footprint which is probably needed considering the heavier weight of this monitor. The adjustable monitor arm is robust and has a smooth action raising and lowering it as well as titling the display. It can also be rotated by 90 degrees to use it in a vertical orientation. Very impressed with the physical ergonomics. Well done. The display has a very thin bezel on the top and sides and a little larger chin at the bottom. It looks very clean on a desk. The 60 hz refresh rate looks great while gaming and makes everything nice and smooth. I'm super impressed with how deep the blacks are on this display and the HDR mode worked well while connected via DisplayPort. The viewing angles are also incredible and you can be way off angle and it still looks great with little to no glare. I used this with both an ASUS gaming laptop and a Macbook Pro and it worked flawlessly with both. The speakers are…um, speakers on a monitor. They aren’t great but I think most people will be relying on an external speaker system or headphones. They are on par with other monitor speakers so I can’t dock it any points for that. Overall, just like the title says, it’s an incredible value for the money!

ASUS - 28" IPS WLED 4k Gaming Monitor (DisplayPort, HDMI) this is a versatile monitor that can handle mid range gaming and every day tasks and works without sweating at all. the packaging was very good and the monitor was well protected. putting the monitor together was a breeze and took less than a minute. Usage: the word here is versatile, with minimum lag and higher refresh rate this was a great upgrade from my other same size name brand monitor that was in the same price range and that was advertised for productivity. but we are testing this monitor for gaming, so here we go: the monitor was used with a Lenovo - Legion Tower 5i Gaming Desktop - Intel Core i5-10400 - 8GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super - 256GB SSD + 1TB HDD - Phantom Black. games played range from League of legends, Mortal Combat XL, Fortnight, Minecraft to Forza. which all have performed very well and had no LAG at all on medium settings. there was no tearing at all. this monitor displays beautifully when playing from a Blu-ray or streaming 4K over a decent internet speed. the configuration menu and app are great for customizing your experience. the monitor can be used in horizontal or vertical modes which is great for productivity. thats a huge plus if you use multiple monitors for work and you are an average gamer. over all, this monitor is TUF to beat for the price and features and I am very happy with this product.

    Do NOT buy this product!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The worst customer service (ASUS) and the worst monitor. Do NOT buy this product! Earlier this year I bought an ASUS monitor (VG289Q1A) from “B&H” store. After a few days my monitor started flickering. I'm an IT professional so I did some troubleshooting myself then called ASUS who blamed the PC. After some more troubleshooting I was convinced the problem is with the monitor but ASUS did not want to refund the money, did not want to send me a replacement within a reasonable timeframe and said I have to ship it out to CA so they can fix it. I waited a couple of weeks and after 2 days of getting the "fixed" monitor it was flickering again and I realized the audio stopped working. More calls to ASUS support resulted in more frustration, no refund and a defective monitor. From February until now ASUS was not able to amend my very poor experience with their product and customer service. Take my advice: don't buy from ASUS - go to a good company with good customer service and good warranty (like Intel).

The Asus 28 IPS WLED 4k monitor hits a sweet spot for 4k gaming, especially with the new consoles. While this monitor would be a good PC gaming monitor, I think it’s a GREAT gaming console monitor. The PS5 and XSX both run 4k 60fps on most of their titles, because of this you want a monitor that can take full advantage of this. Most televisions do a good job of this, but a dedicated gaming monitor takes it to the next level with ultra-low latency, smoother video, and great color profiling. I hooked it up to my PS5 and it was a major upgrade over my 4k TV. Asus has designed this monitor to take advantage of what makes playing games more pleasurable. At $350 this monitor does all those things which makes it a great buy in my opinion. The colors look awesome, the video is smooth, the menu system is easy to use, and there are plenty of ports in the back. The monitor comes with a display port cable which was a great addition. If you are looking to upgrade your new gaming console with a proper monitor, then this Asus 28 is a fantastic choice!
