So funny story

It turns out that modular power supply cables are not standardized. Even though they use the same plugs on both ends, there is a good chance that they are wired differently and that can result in catastrophic failure of a drive, or component. There is even concern for cables from the same product family that aren't the same model.
And that's why power cables don't come included with components, at least generally.
For what it's worth, the Asus CD/DVD R/W didn't spark, fizzle, crackle, or release any toxic fumes, it just quietly died.
The old SSD I swapped in among my attempts to isolate why the drive wasn't working was not so, auspiciously inclined.
There are much worse, and expensive, ways I could have learned this lesson:
Only use the cables that come with your PSU, and keep them separated from any others you might have, instead of dumping them all into a tote and using the first one you find.
Otherwise, pretty standard and solid construction. Caught the drive on a sale for $25 USD or so, which seems like a pretty good price to me. Manufacturing label says the drive was made in China during January 2021, which as a pleasant surprise was a lot more recent than I would have expected.
Importantly, at this time, the front panel shown as the official image of the drive does not match the actual drive being sold as another reviewer pointed out, it seems to be for a fancier model. I knew what I was getting into, but it is deceptive, though an easy enough mistake to make, and hopefully fix.

Asus CD-RW Replacement Drive

I bought this CD-RW drive to replace the 10-year-old original drive in my HP Pavilion desktop.
The installation process took less than 5 minutes, and the drive was recognized by the OS with no issues.
The only drawback is the copy of the burner software that came with the drive. It's extremely limited in its functionality and really requires the consumer to purchase the full product (which I did not do).
It is an excellent value, as I was able to replace my broken drive for less than $26.

Fairly easy to install. I thought this was an IDE interface because I mistakenly believed my motherboard had only IDE connectors but I'm glad I was wrong. This drive has a SATA interface which matches the drive that came with my computer.
I've used it a few times. It's fast and it's quiet and has its own version of BURN-Proof (can't remember the name). A really good DVD burner and I got it at a bargain price.

This drive is incredibly functional , versatile, and best of all cost efficient. It burns DVDs and CDs with ease, comes with NERO burning Suite, and is whisper quiet, I forgot I was burning media it's so quiet. Easy to install, just plug in the SATA from the back of the drive into the motherboard of the unit and you're done! No BIOS setup, nothing extra to do, Windows recognizes immediately. =)

The original CD/DVD drive in my desktop was starting to refuse to read read/write CDs so I decided to replace it with something new and faster. This unit slipped right in place, configured in like a dream, and works quietly and flawlessly. I'm pleased.

New build burner

I needed a new burner with the re-build of my gaming computer because my new Motherboard does not have an old IDE interface, only SATA connections. My old burner, while still working, has an IDE interface. My only other option was to purchase a PC card with an IDE adapter on it to connect my old burner to the new motherboard. Not only is this a pricey get around way to use the old burner, it takes up a PC slot that you may not want to use. Also, the data transfer rate is much slower using this back door type connection. For the price, this was a much better solution. I have a new burner to run my re-built computer with fast data transfer with ease of installation. Definitely worth every penny, especially considering what I spent on all the new components. Great burner for the price.

For Upgrade to Older PC

After reading reviews at several sources, bought this to replace a defective OEM ODD in an older (vintage 2004-2005) HP PC recently upgraded with a SSD and Windows 7. Since this is a SATA drive for an IDE motherboard, I also bought a cheapie SATA-to-PATA (IDE) converter from a seller in China. Physically it all just barely fits in my SFF PC, but seems to work well. The ODD was thoroughly tested using a 3rd party ODD software test suite, and all tests passed. Hopefully this PC is now usable for a few more years. On the down side, ASUS offers very limited support on their website (no firmware upgrades, no drivers, no detailed user or technical documentation).

Well, I saw this optical drive on BestBuy.com at such a low price I had to purchase it !
I actually installed it in an external optical drive enclosure and have been using this drive thru USB 3.0 with my HP 17 inch Envy laptop.
I have not used the supplied software at all.
Well, I have only burnt a few Audio CD's all successfully!
Pokiosoft Ez Audio - Da Extractor and Apple Itunes is what I usually use back and forth for Audio CD chores.
It even works with Foobar2000 universal audio/video media player with the Audio CD Authoring/Burning plugin - it is amazing with Foobar - so quick quick quick and supports .mp4 , .m4a, mp3 etc all in a single playlist for effortless Audio CD discs made.
About the speed process of this drive's burning , it is noticeably quicker than the slim-line optical drives that cost 25 to 40 dollars online.
It is very very very nice to have this drive when you burn many optical discs lets say at a siting to gift out to others.
It is very quick, and I have yet to encounter any problems with my ASUS optical drive!
I very very very much recommend this drive. And at the price it was selling at the time I bought it on Best Buy, it is a must purchase!
Just remember, if you want to use it with your laptop make sure you have reliable drive enclosure.
Read reviews of such items to make sure you have a problem-free experience using it with your pc !
Happy buying !
Happy burning!
postscript
Remember that if you use an external drive enclosure with this drive, it will have an external power adapter to be able to use this drive with your computer.
The way I use it with my laptop, it is a little inconvenience to have to lug another power adapter and to find an extra power source plug-in at the restaurant/cafe to be able to use it. Make sure you find two power outlets- one for your laptop another for your optical drive ! You can also purchase a dual-outlet power bank to use for your laptop and this drive properly configured- which is what I will probably buy in the future!

My original DVD player went out and this drive worked out perfectly. With a SATA connection, it was an easy install, and Windows 10 installed it right away. It is inexpensive, fast and quiet, and like the title says, does the job.

My DVR writer died after 8 years. I found this one at a really good price. Install and OS recognition was seamless. The drive worked perfectly. Since nowadays these drives are not used often, it does not get allot of heavy use. The only thing I noticed is that it is a little slower opening and closing than my last drive. Which really is not an issue, but I wanted to point out this observation. I would recommend this drive.

This drive is running well, and the price was nice. The only downside was that it did not come with a SATA cable to hook it up. That had to be a separate purchase and more waiting to get my drive and my newly build system up and running. I know it may seem odd, but simple considerations like including the required cabling, like companies used to do even in the early 2000s, are not that much more expensive, but make the process of building a new system or upgrading it much nicer.
