I've had this router for several years and have been satisfied overall. Just updated latest firmware and am now REQUIRED to allow sharing of my data if I want to continue to use it. Seriously? Good bye ASUS. Unless you want ASUS to spy and resell your data, stay away. direct quote from installed firmware: Please note that users are required to agree to share information before using DDNS, Remote Connection (ASUS Router APP、Lyra APP、AiCloud、AiDisk), AiProtection, Traffic analyzer, Apps analyzer, Adaptive QoS, Game Boost and Web history. Amazing router, until 2.4 GHz died

I absolutely loved this router, highly customizable and great performance. However, just shy of a month after purchasing it I noticed that my WiFi devices were suddenly all showing as disconnected. The front of the router showed the first 4 lights were on but not flashing at all, and the ethernet light was off. Power cycled it and when it came back the power light just stayed lit with no other lights. Power cycled it again after 5 mins of no activity and suddenly the 2.4 GHz radio is gone. Light doesn't turn on, and I can't change radio settings for 2.4 GHz. Apparently this is a common issue. Thankfully it happened just inside the return policy, if it's already having these issues within a month of owning it I can't imagine what it'll be like a year or two down the road.

This router was purchased to improve online streaming and the overall WiFi coverage in our house. There were several dead spots in our house. This router did an excellent job of addressing that issue. Online streaming of video content has also noticeably improved. Overall, I’m very happy with this router. The main issue with the router is that getting the settings right for best performance is not easy. What effect all the various options have is not clearly described in the documentation and some trial and error is needed. The placement of the USB 3.0 port in the front is unfortunate. It forces you to clutter up the front if you want to take advantage of the faster port. The other issue I have is the stability of the WiFi connection to my Galaxy 5 is not stable. I’m not sure why, but it keeps dropping. No other device has this issue. Overall, this is a very good router with excellent range. It should be a good addition to any household.

I tried a mesh system and had some connectivity issues with some of my devices. Then I decided to go back to an Asus router, I have not been disappointed! Excellent coverage area, excellent speed in the coverage area. Even when I have two bars on my mobile device it's still giving me excellent speed upload and download. The reason I liked the AC3100 was it's reliability. Before this router I tried the Ubiquiti AmpliFi, and Netgear Nighthawk AC4000. Both the AmpliFi and Nighthawk both kept having me restart the router, sometimes during normal use they both just went down for no reason. When I installed the Asus, it's been 1 months now, no restart just works and gets the job done. To me that's more important than special features, again the speed is excellent, coverage is excellent. I have a 2800 sq ft brick home, not easy on WiFi systems and I have full coverage with the Asus AC3100.

I purchased the ASUS RT-AC3100 to replace an aging TrendNet router. The WiFi was easy to set up and I quickly had both the 5 GHz ac and 2.4 Ghz bands set up and operational. Wifi has good signal in my home and the throughput is sufficient for the wireless devices in the house. While the web interface is easy to use, there are a ton of features buried in the myriad of menus. I had fairly slow wired performance, which wasn't fixed until I enabled "Jumbo frames" Took a while to find exactly where that feature was located. IPv6 was also disabled by default, which seems strange in this day and age. Overall I am pleased with the router, but it does require some setup to work it's best. Due to the that, and the sheer number of features it presents, it may be difficult for a novice to get the most out of this purchase.

It's okay, but 5ghz signal disappears daily

SUMMARY: Good/functional for limited number of bandwidth users; 5ghz band signal goes out and stays out intermittently on daily basis AT LEAST, despite firmware updates, usually solved with router reboot. It works, and I get 163mb/s when I pay for 150mb/s with Cox here in Nevada. However, I'll find that my 5ghz signal goes out intermittently, and I'll have to reboot the router to get it to come on again. BUT: I don't know if the 5ghz band goes out more frequently than I notice. I don't have many bandwidth users in my household, and I can only provide the daily instance of band drop for as often that I actually check. Often, my desired devices simply default to connecting to the router's 2ghz band signal anyway; with the few users I have on this network, it's not that big an issue. Givens: - Updated firmware for router and separate modem. - Specific controls changed on devices accordingly, for preference to specific band.

We bought this router to replace a 10-year-old Linksys router. Right out of the box, our speeds were much faster. Our old router wasn't able to keep up with the 9-10 devices connected to it. Unfortunately, this router has some problems. The main connection kept dropping devices. The WiFi printer we connected to it would work for a few hours, and then no one could access it until we reset the router. We contacted ASUS, but four weeks later we still haven't received a response. Looking online, we found someone who wrote that if you make a guest account, and attach all your devices to it, the problems go away. We made a guest account, connected to it, and since then all the problems went away. It's just annoying that we had to use a workaround to get the performance we read about when researching routers.

Over all I'm very pleased with the ASUS router that we got, it was to replace a Netgear Nighthawk, that had been giving us problems by not reconnecting to our ISP box. The only thing I have that I found inconvenient is that we have a small closet that we call for lack of a better, term we call media closet. Cable and other out side connections come into. I decided to put a small shelf up high in the closet giving just a enough room for the antennas to move when I was reconnecting the router I must have hit the button that turns off the WIFI broadcast I thought something went wrong with the router, I found the button and turned back on, I think it would be nice to have an LED for that button as it is black and blends nicely with the front of the router other than that I think it is a great router I have good clear signal no slow downs that I have noticed in connecting with my smart devices.

I purchased this to replace a Netgear unit that became unstable after a firmware update. The unit is your typical upper tier consumer router. Many of the features, such as Multi-MIMO are not standardized yet in the WIFI standard and are not necessarily enabled by default or compatible with all devices. Also realize that while the WIFI advertised speeds are pretty incredible very few devices have the required number of antennas or are cranked up enough (especially with mobile devices) to actually attain the advertised throughput. Real world on my phone (Galaxy note 5) I only get a typical 100Mbps or less at 25 feet away with a wall or two in on 5ghz and maybe up to 400Mbps up close. That isn't bad mind you but it isn't even close to 3.5 gigabits like advertised. Firmware updates have been kind of sketchy and I would suggest to just expect to reset to factory settings to get optimal performance after updates. But this again is typical of consumer grade equipment from my experience.

I previously had a belkin AC750 router. It was downstairs and my laptop was being used in an upstairs bedroom. I pay for 200 Mbps however was only getting at best ~35 Mbps on a good day and and had constant drops in my connection. I would often run into trouble when doing video conference calls. The Asus however has solved all my problems. It has a really nice user interface you can use to adjust the settings - easy as pie to use. Most importantly I have had zero disconnects so far and get a constant ~170 Mbps. The router and laptop are in the same place. The signal is just that much better and reliable. It costs a lot however you get what you pay for. Lookswise - I dig the fighter jet look but my wife doesn't appreciate it as much given it sticks out like a sore thumb in our living room lol. It improved our wifi situation so much that she agreed to let me keep it. Jokes aside this thing works and is worth the money.

I purchased this along with a new modem to take advantage of the speed increase I received from Time Warner for my ultimate internet account. Needless to say this router will not disappoint! Setup was simple and I had it up and running in about 15 minutes carrying over all of my network password settings from my old router. There is a noticeable speed increase compared to my old Belkin AC1900 router. Wireless speeds are incredible. I have had zero issues on any of my connected equipment unlike before where I would on occasion have to re-boot the router after having my internet connection slow or stop working completely. I have also noticed that my wireless range has increased to the point that I receive full reception in any location inside my two story home as well as outdoors on the porch, deck, and garage. I even have wireless reception in my outdoor shop over 100 feet away from my house! Some may consider this router expensive but I assure you it is worth every penny!!!

I haven't any any issues with this router that others have experienced. This bad boy flies! On 5ghz wifi on my phone, I am pulling speeds comparable to my desktop that is hardwired. Downstairs in my kitchen (which isn't close to the router), I am pulling 224 Mbps download and 23 Mbps upload speeds. I haven't fully tested the range outside yet. But I can tell you it reaches the whole backyard and my nextdoor neighbor's house with good signal. I have nothing but high praise for the Asus AC3100! It's a beast!

This router has helped my online video streaming stability and also gaming for myself and my son. I needed to replace my old router and looked at several online sites for reviews and most said this was a great gaming router. The setup was very easy and I have over 25 devices to setup on my network. Overall stability has been excellent with no dropped signal like my old router. The app for my phone made is easy to label all my devices as I added them so I could see what each device was doing. I could also prioritize what devices received larger bandwidth for streaming and gaming. The interface for setup and managing it is great on a PC and has more functions then any person could ever want. I have always used Netgear and recommended them but I am very surprised how well this router stands up to them and would say buy this one instead.

I replaced my Time warner cable router/modem with this and paired it with the arris SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0. I could not be happier with my results. I was paying for 50mbps and only downloading at about 15mbps sitting in my couch. My router is in my office about 30 feet from said couch. So for me this was just not acceptable. I went to my local Best Buy and talked to a very helpful gentleman, told him my situation and he seemed confident with selling me this combo. He did not disappoint! I'm now streaming at an average speed of 55mbps on my couch! Even at the farthest point of my house from the setup it's consistently over 30mbps. And it doesn't matter what time of day like TWC suggests being the problem for the slow down! I have recommended this to friends and family since my purchase and their all happy as well. Once you get past spending the money you won't be dissapointed! And you don't have to pay $10 extra per month for theyre junk equipment.

Here's the problem I faced: I live in a house with just one cable outlet, and that one is in a relatively inconvenient place, but I needed a fast, reliable internet connection, not just for streaming HD videos (Netflix, etc) but for my job (which involves frequent video conferences). Solution: a router that provides a large area of coverage and a really strong signal. Based on various review sites, it seemed like the Asus - AC3100 might do the trick. Based on several months of usage at the time of this review, it certainly has. I routinely get speeds faster than Comcast claims I should (based on my plan) and the connection is strong and reliable, even from three floors up in my house. Even the backyard is covered. In sum, this a great router. It is on the expensive side, and is probably more than many people need, but if a fast internet connection throughout your house is a priority for you, I think it is well worth the investment.

USB ports do not work, No customer support

    Posted

BEWARE if intending to use this router's USB ports for storage. The "USB 3.0" port is just a blue colored USB 2.0 port, not actually a USB 3.0 port. Both USB ports cannot use large drives (around 4TB) since the kernel used by this router has a 4+ year old bug that prevents the OS from being able to address large drives. Both USB ports have a maximum read/write speed of around 1.5MB/s...nowhere near the 100MB/s in the specs. While reading/writing USB storage the CPU is maxed out at 100% for both cores so no other functionality can be used (internet access). Asus customer support is no help. At first I was told these issues are "normal"...now, 2+ weeks later they have finally started to look into them. Don't bother with Asus customer support, you won't get any help unless the case is "escalated" to "Level 2"...this process takes at least a week.

I have CenturyLink 1G fibre at the house and the router they use I was getting 64Mbs at best over wireless. I found that you can use other routers as long as it supports vlan tagging which this router does. I bought it set it up and when plugged directly into the router I was getting over 900Mbps The router is in my basement because my wife works from home and we had to setup and office space down there. My laptop is on the opposite side of the house and upstairs from the router and I still get over 200Mbps speeds compared to the 60Mbps on CenturyLinks crappy router that they make you think is all you can use. I would highly recommend this router especially if you gave CenturyLink 1G fibre.

My Netgear Nighthawk died on me after about 1.5 years so I needed a replacement that had wide coverage in a 4,000 plus square feet two story house. The Nighthawk has fair coverage but in the furthest reaches of the house its range could usually manage only one and rarely two bars of signal strength. In replacing the failed Nighthawk I wanted something that potentially had a greater range so I reviewed the ASUS AC3100 and was impressed by the reviews. I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Set up went fairly smoothly and I was very pleased with the range. Now I am consistently getting 2-3 bars signal strength in the furthest ranges. I am pleased with the purchase, however the only down side is the steep price. If you can manage the sticker shock price, the performance is top notch so far. Yet to be seen is what kind of longevity this will have. Hopefully that will be positive too.

I had good hope for this router but the distance is not very good I use a Roku on the bed tv that is about 60 feet from the router and it will not reach this tv, I also have been having trouble logging into the router a tech help me fix the login problem once but it is now doing it again so I can not make any changes to router. I had to buy a extender for my router to get the distance. I also had to purchase a firmware to protect my wireless item from malware that was $300.00 for 2 year service thought ASUS, I thought the router already had this built into it already. for the total cost for router, extender, and firmware it is not worth the money I would not recommend anyone to purchase this.

After using other brands in the past and only getting about 12-18 months of use from them before they started to cut out or drop signal and need to be reset I switched to an Asus router. The first one I bought lasted for about 4 years so when it was time to get a new one the choice was clear for me. My biggest decision was between this model or the tri-band, I chose this one because all TV's and game systems in our house are hard wired, so didn't feel I needed the extra channel to handle the workload of a few laptops/tablets and cell phones. This unit was easy to set up and provides great coverage in our house, which is a ranch style with approx 1800 sq ft on main floor. The unit is located near a front corner of the main floor and it provides a full signal while in opposite corner in the basement.
