ASUS AX6000 Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Router
PROS
. Future proof
. Supports PPoE with VLAN tagging
. 8 Gbit ports
. FREE Real-time threat protection
. Excellent coverage
. Loaded with features
CONS
. When using AIProtection, fiber speeds drops to fifty percent
. Few devices can take advantage of the full speed of 802.11ax (Wi-Fi Generation 6)
. Dual, not tri-band
. Setting up PPoE that uses VLAN tagging is not intuitive and confusing
Having gaming computers, video security systems, smart lighting and all gadgets of a smart home in addition to a lot of video streaming, all the speed a wireless router can provide is a must for me. Since my house is relatively big, coverage is also very important. The Asus AX6000 router can deliver all that and then some.
Network security at my home has become extremely important because of all the smart home gadgets I have installed in the last year or so. The built-in AiProtection with real-time threat protection seems to work very well and amazingly, it does not require any subscription. Completely free. I really like that option. The downside is that it cut my gigabit speed to the internet in almost half. I do not know if that happens if your broadband speed is slower but my experience with business NG firewalls tells me that it affects whatever speed you have. It’s just the processing power. For that reason, I suspect the Asus’ other 802.11ax model, the GT-AX11000 Tri-Band, would not cut the speed that much but I don’t have it to test and confirm that. In my case, 500Mbps instead of 1Gbps is no big deal even with the dozens of devices I have on my home network. Nobody noticed and the peace of mind it gives is worth it. Also, it is optional and if you think that the full speed is more important than security, you can disable it.
This is not the first router I own that allows me to schedule time or block sites per device but it is a great feature that I use all the time, especially for my 10-year-old daughter and her iPad.
My only complaint was that configuring my fiber connection, which requires PPoE over a tagged VLAN, was not intuitive. The wizard does not consider tagged VLANs. However, I am happy that it supports PPoE and VLAN tagging. Following instructions on Asus web site, I was able to make it work without having to lease my service provider’s modem and pay $10 per month. That saves me $120 a year. Thank you Asus.
Alexa, Google Home and Siri can control most everything I have. This router can support Alexa and IFTTT. I still have not figured out all the benefits other than asking Alexa to pause the internet but it is a nice feature to have.
With AIProtection turned on, I got 537 Mbps download and 344 Mpbs upload to the internet with my iPhone Xs Max 4 feet away from the router and 304 Mbps down and 356 Mbps up from 40 feet away. I am still trying to understand why I got a better upload speed at a longer distance but I had similar results every time I tested it. Playing games was very smooth, even when using Oculus Rift. I was getting stable over 300 Mbps at an upstairs room over 45 feet away from the router downstairs. If the PC had a Gen 6 Wi-Fi card, I know I would have gotten even better throughput. Interestingly, there was no significant change in speed with AiProtection off for wireless devices. It only made a difference with wired PCs.
I did not have AirMesh Wi-Fi units to test but my guess is that it is not as good as with a tri-band router but I am speculating here. Overall, this is the best wireless router I have ever had in terms of capability. Just waiting for more Generation 6 Wi-Fi devices to be released to take full advantage of the performance of this router. I thought of removing one star due to the difficulty that I had setting up PPoE over a tagged VLAN but the fact that it worked was worth the trouble.

For the past week, I have a lot of problem with this router. If one of my devices is not connected wirelessly or thru cable for a while / or its a new device, I have to reboot the router so that the device will connect to it. I already setup my router to automatically reboot every other day but still I have this problem. I have the latest firmware installed.

The presentation was nice, but that was it. The performance of this router was spotty. Had way less range than my current Nighthawk X6. Single drops, inconsistent bandwidth appeared to be normal operation for the router. I had tried the AiMesh with some AC3100s I had picked up and both of those had issues as well. I could not successfully get a reliable AiMesh network, and this was with two weeks of testing and trying different settings, orientations, and firmware versions. After three Asus routers that all seemed to have problems, I am never considering them again. I will now be looking at other brands.

Dear Chad
We certainly understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused you.
All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections, and are built to last. The router rebooting after 3 months of usage is a random problem. If the product is out of the replacement window from seller, we recommend sending it in for service. Normally, ASUS provides warranty coverage, if product was purchased brand-new, in order to fix or repair any hardware or part that stop working prematurely under normal usage.
If you need more information or further assistance with the warranty for the product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are always welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent at: http://bit.ly/AsusLiveChat.

It’s very easy to set up. Installation just took me less than 5mins, then I can enjoy high speed internet. Although there are no any 11ax clients yet, but RT-AX88U works fine with my smart IoT devices. I have about 20 connected devices in my household, including 4K smart TV, robot vacuum, notebook, ipad, mobile phone, smart plug...etc. I'm very pleased to report that this thing is rock solid. I have not even once gone offline and all my devices connect and work perfectly. Range and speed are outstanding.
Using a throughput app, I'm seeing very good throughout depending on where I am at in the home. Ping is very low, lower than the old Asus. So overall excellent performance and range. I have my network setup in "smart" mode where the SSID is the same for both radios. I'm not sure if it makes a difference because I've always set mine up that way, just never had the "smart" feature as an option. The smart mode I think tries to balance the number of devices on each radio and will move them if demand is too great on one or the other.
So overall, I definitely recommend this router. I've only had it for a short time but I will come back and update the review if something changes. For all those that are having connectivity issues, have you updated to the newest firmware? Mine is rock solid.

EXCELLENT - NEW TECH - PREMIUM PRICE

The ASUS - AX6000 Dual Band Wifi Router offers the new, cutting-edge tech of the 801... AX standard which, of course, offers greater Wifi speeds. As expected, you'll need the latest devices that are capable of exploiting the advantages of this latest standard. Also, because this is newer tech, the price reflects it. If you don't need it, you'll still get great performance from the previous standards using MU-MIMO.
However, if you want to get the latest tech that will help you squeeze every bit of bandwidth out of your system, this is a solid choice. Performance is excellent in both speed, managing multiple devices, and range of coverage.
Set up was fairly easy and I had no problems. However, the included instructions made no mention of their 'ASUS Router' App I found on the iOS App Store (I assume there's one for Android as well). I'm glad I looked for it before doing the installation as it made it smoother. I also like the fact that Parental Controls includes filter categories which, surprisingly, the Linksys App does not include in it's App.
Once installed, it has worked great. I've had no glitches, the speed is excellent (even with multiple devices streaming). For the latest tech (at a corresponding price) this is an Excellent Router.

This is really a whole home router, a real beast!

I've gotten a lot of experience with routers over the last 10 years. Some are nice, some are nicer, but this one is a beast!! It is full of features that frankly most will never get close to. Just read the description of what is included with this router - the most important thing I saw was the AI protection from Trend. It is stated to be commercial quality protection and after some digging around in the programming, I'd say that is legit.
From the time you get this and open the box, you can tell you are in a different ballpark with this router. From the 4 detachable antennas, to the meaty transformer, you know this is not some piece of junk. And as you continue to set this up, you realize how easy it is to setup and manage, but yet provides you with a tremendous amount of information.
It took about 15 minutes to set up, and maybe 10 of that was for a firmware download and update (does it by clicking a button, not any harder than that). I plugged it into my FIOS router, it automatically went into bridge mode, connected to the internet, allowed me to set up the system by simply opening my browser and going to the address shown in the literature. Once that was done, I had to manually reboot the router, and then it was up and running.
I signed into the web based interface and started looking around. It is a very advanced interface unlike like anything I've seen other than my FIOS router administration setup. You'll be surprised at the things you can do with this router, from checking on activity, seeing a map of what is running on your network (with names), watching traffic patterns, parental controls, super fast wifi speed, and next gen WIFI standard of ax. It has so many things I was overwhelmed at all of the things the programming menu allowed you to look at and change. No other router, other than my FIOS router has ever allowed you to see this much information, websites the devices are going out to, how much traffic is being utilized, etc. This is so much information (that you don't need to look at if you don't want to) that even the most meticulous detail oriented network engineers will be happy with this I am sure.
The colors of black and gold are appropriate, this is the gold standard as far as I'm concerned. Nothing else has ever come close to offering this kind of protection, speed, and user controllable options. Nothing.
While it isn't the cheapest router on the market, you won't need repeaters for this. Nor will you need anyone to help you set this up, even if you are a novice. The 8 ports on the back may or may not be helpful in a residential environment, it can be great for a small office setting for hardwired connections. These are gigabit ports. There is a separate port to connect to the internet source. There is a power button on the back and a reset button. Both are good decent switches.
Physically the unit feels good, it is heavy but not too heavy (shipping weight was 6 lbs), and while it maintains a big footprint, I am glad they left enough room inside of the router for airflow and not just trying to make it cheap or small.
Give it a try...if it isn't the best router you have seen or used, Best Buy has a decent return policy and will gladly refund your money. Truth is, you won't want to give it back. I found myself thinking why hasn't someone else done something like this? It really is the gold standard and if you just give it a try, you'll understand why. Thanks Asus, great job!

Great Router, Excellent Feature List

The AX6000 is a sleek looking dual band router from ASUS. The two bands being 2.4GHz and 5Ghz. It actually is an 802.11ax router though is backwards compatible with devices that would work with 802.11ac. The 6000 is the combined speed (6000Mbps) on the two bands over 802.11ax. For your older devices on 802.11ac, you'd be limited to a max of 4333Mbps. Each band supports 4 channels each which results in pretty good throughput for the typical number of home devices.
Router setup is prety easy going through the web interface. It's running ASUS WRT firmware which makes this a bit more full featured than some routers. For example, it supports OpenVPN on the router, a media server, a print server (for USB connected dumb printers), Samba and FTP servers (provide access to your files on an external hard drive), and a built in download application that can handle downloading files for you, scheduling and throttling bandwith usage. Depending on your internet service and available computing at home, this can be a big deal as you don't need to keep a laptop or desktop completely tied up to manage a download and it automatically throttles things back while you're active, like watching a movie over a streaming service.
Physically, it has 1 WAN port (connection to a cable or DSL modem), 8 LAN ports, 2 USB ports and 4 antenna. It surprisingly supports WPS even though that's not recommeded from a security perspective. I looked at three performance metrics. Streaming quality at the furthest location in my house from the router, gaming latency between a couple routers inside the house, and speed to copy a large file from my laptop to a USB hard drive attached to the router. Streaming quality was good. Things started out at 720p but quickly moved up to full HD (1080p). Aside from the initial hiccup (at what's still good quality) I didn't notice any issues. Gaming worked pretty well. No perceptible lag or stuttering between two machines connected over the wireless. With the LAN ports being gigabit, I expect those would be even better. The file copy speed was about 8Mbps at the highest. At first, I thought I'd found a problem, but it turned out that this is about the fastest my USB external drive can handle! I was being speed limited by the drive, not the wireless.
I'm pretty impressed by the AX6000. Premium performance routers have been incorporating more features one typically gets from third party router firmware like DDWRT. I've only recently found commercial routers with enough features built-in that I didn't feel a need to purchase one capable of being loaded with DDWRT. The AX6000 takes things a step further and really stands out in terms of features. One feature I should highlight is the AiProtection service from Trend Micro. In addition from acting as an addition firewall and antivirus on the router, you also get a license (time limited as well) for PCs and a couple mobile devices. I'm not sure how great a feature this really is. I didn't really evaluate it and frankly, I don't think most people are knowledgeable or equipped enough to truly test out whether or not this works well. For me, my devices already have protection - it seems the additional anti-virus on the router is just leeching performance. That said, if your current antivirus license is expiring or you're already a trend micro user, this could be a cool value add.

Advanced Router for the Home

Setup:
The Asus Router is fairly easy to setup. The only con I have with this device is during the setup. The Wireless Radio's are set to Open. Unlike manufacturers devices who have a custom WiFi name and password for setup ASUS in this respect went the simple and lazy route and turned the wireless on and left it open. While it makes it easy to quickly setup, it does leave you open for someone to hijack your router before you finish setup. Therefore when you get ready to set this up, I recommend be fast to lock down your wireless.
However that con aside setup was easy. I was happy to see when you start the setup on the device you are asked with you want to use this as a router or an access point. For me I need access point to extend my wireless and not route my Internet. Because I set this up as an access point some of router/firewall/security features are naturally disabled, so I can't comment on those, as an access point, it is great. It quickly detected my network and work. That was nice. I had it up and running very fast. Only downside as I was tuning the settings, like turning off WPS, it would have to stop and reset the router. It was fairly fast, but slightly annoying that I would have to wait 15 seconds every time.
Use:
Since setting it up, I have been testing with my gaming desktop, which has been wired. I haven't noticed a difference in gaming or downloading with the ASUS Device. Now I have a higher end Wireless card, but still I've been impressed with that. Now my experience will be different from yours, however the wireless is working. The coverage in my house, for the access point it replaced is just as good, and the devices connecting don't seem to be experiencing problems.
Asus also seems to regularly support there devices with firmware upgrades from what I can see, however I am unsure, if the device is auto updating the firmware, since I always manually check with all new devices. However due to the features on this router, a manual update may be better, but I'd recommend making sure if you have a good backup of settings and set a reminder to check once a month for new firmware, if it doesn't auto update.
There is a warning though if you have Intel Wireless cards (a lot of laptop users) that you should ensure the drivers are updated before using this device. The warning is in the box, so check your devices before moving them over to the ASUS. For me that doesn't seem to be an issue, and I am happy with ASUS. While I'm unsure of the advantage of the AX Wireless standard since I don't have any clients, For my use case, the device I tested, I was unable to really tell the difference between the ASUS Wireless connection and using an Ethernet cable.I like having that flexibilty and the advanced features and tuning given by ASUS.Its nice to have a device where I have a large number of options and I am very happy with it and think you will be too.
