This is an amazing router! I bought it in preparation for moving into a much larger, multi-story house and it's ease of mesh setup with other devices was exactly what I needed. Amazingly, in a three-level 4000 sq. ft. house, this router's amazing range covers it without the need for additional devices. Even outside at the patio, great signal and speeds from this one device. Rarely, if ever, have I had to reboot or troubleshoot for any issues... usually if the WiFi is down, it is because of an issue with the ISP, not the router. Also, very easy to set up.

With so many little wi-fi vampires needing signal. My old router might have been glitching under the strain. This Asus AX86U was constantly popping up on lists from experts saying it was among the best for gaming and high amounts of devices needing signal. Found Best Buy one of the few sellers actually to have it in stock, I bought one.
The app for my phone makes it really easy to get the basics of this router up and running in just a few minutes. And for those with more advanced needs and knowledge. The app makes it far easier to tweak which devices get the most bandwidth like gaming systems or even keeping the kids devices off at various times of the day.
While its only been a couple weeks. The router is living up to the experts advice so far. With 31 devices connected(pc's, tablets, phones, PS4's and many cameras), it has not dropped or needed a restart and seems to be keeping its cool. Signal strength with this router sitting at one side of the house, even the streaming at the far side of the house is without issue. If I never really have to think about this router for the next few years. I will call this investment a good one. So Far So Good.

Great speed, pretty good coverage. OS let's you customize your network to your heart's content. HIghly recommended as a stand alone router. The con is that the AiMesh feature is very buggy. I tried to create a mesh network using another RT-AC86U and an RT-AC68U. Every combination of root/node I could think of resulted in the node dropping out consistently. I couldn't maintain a mesh network for more than 2 hours. As I need a mesh network, unfortunately I'll be returning this unit. I'm disappointed having to return this since as a stand alone router, this unit is amazing.

I bought this router to replace my old Netgear R6400 ac1750, which started to act up. This router is more expensive, but I feel the features & performance justifies the price increase. The first thing I noticed immediately was the additional range. I have several wireless cameras around the outside of my house, and I was only getting about 1/2 of the maximum ISP speed from my old router around those locations (with signal traveling through multiple walls/glass windows/brick fireplaces, etc.). Now I can get full speed (260 Mbps) at all locations. The router setup is very easy with good UI. I haven't tested out the gaming features yet, but initial spot check also shows small improvement in ping time, which is a plus. All in all very happy with the purchase with about a week or so in use.

We have had this router for a while now. We can run as many devices as we need to without a problem - even in farther away areas. We have it in the basement and it reaches the second floor without a problem. Rarely, but occasionally we may have to restart the router if it loses connection to the internet. No regrets though - it is a awesome router.

A huge upgrade because all my neighbors are on 2.4Ghz and hardly anyone is on 5Ghz, so there's less congestion on whatever channel you're running on. I recommend downloading Wifianalyzer and checking how many people are 2.4 compared to 5Ghz and then make your decision. The only negative is that I wish ASUS would release more firmware upgrades.

This is an incredible router with features galore, all without breaking the bank. Setup was certainly easy enough because the router being replaced was a RT-AC86U. Just saved the old settings off and then imported them into the new RT-AX86U. The old router was reset to factory and then used as part of our home AIMesh (Asus exclusive) system. All worked perfectly. No more dead spots. Our ISP provides 300mbs speed and a wired (ethernet) AIMesh connection 100ft away was providing 250mbs plus speeds. One system in our network has a WIFI 6 wireless adapter and it was also clocked at 220-250mps. All in all, just plain impressive!

This is my second Asus router and it is every bit as powerful as the previous one. It has excellent range, reaching to the far corner of the house with enough speed for HD video. (The router is at one corner of the main floor, with the extreme point being in the basement.) Since we switched to a streaming TV service, I wanted a powerful router with good range, which this Asus model delivers. The setup was quick and easy using a cellphone Asus app. The web interface is the same as the one from the earlier router, which reduced the learning curve a good bit. One unpleasant surprise was the presence CAPTCHA's at login time. Once I finally got logged in, I explored the menus until I found the checkbox to clear to get rid of them.

I did my research, testing systems from TP Link Deco, Eero Pro Asus ZenWiFi and determined that this was the best for my needs. I have a two-story 2500 sq ft home in an L shape. I have one in my upstairs loft and one in the garage and zero dead spots. I have a 400 MBps connection and get 440-480 all over the entire house now!
I tried the other systems and found that the speeds were inconsistent, the connections dropped too frequently, hard resets were required or they just did not “wow” me for the price tag they were asking (here’s looking at you Eero Pro). After multiple hours of reviewing, I decided to try a pair of these R-AX86U’s and I’m happy to say…these are awesome!
I was replacing the ZenWiFi systems, so I was already familiar with the Asus app, but what I liked was the ability to dive deeper in the URL based platform. So, after connecting both to their respective connections to the modem and the wired backhaul it was just minutes to get them up and running.
Once setup, firmware updated and my settings adjusted, speed tests blew away the competition as well as their own ZenWiFi system. Stable and fast…simply amazing.
I can’t say I wasted a lot of time on the other systems because they helped me determine that this was the best fit fit my needs, but I wish I found these first!

I finally decided I needed to upgrade my wifi from an old Linksys from 7 years ago. While that router was running strong, I wanted faster speeds at home and have had good luck with some older ASUS routers at family members homes. The price to feature ratio here seemed spot on for me. I don’t use the air mesh as this thing covers my whole home without trouble. Setup was easy. Much improved speeds and easy to use app. The web interface seems a bit easier to use but the app still works fine for most things. So far so good.

Always been a Netgear fan, however haven't been impressed with them lately. Tried this Asus RT86U gaming router and impressed with the range, let alone speeds. I have Gigablast and this router is extremely fast. The app for my phone is awesome and never has issues. This is one of the best gaming routers I have ever owned. Wifi 6 is the way to go, even though I'm hardwired when gaming.

Best router I've had

This router is honestly amazing for it's price point. I was using a 4 year old Linksys router in my basement and recently it has seemed slower and has never had that great of coverage to our second story. Testing my speeds (even at my PC that is plugged into it) I would hit 150mbps max, which is terrible considering I pay for 400mbps. Switching to this router was extremely easy. Setup was probably the simplest I've had. The speeds I'm hitting are 400+Mbps. Plus I have full coverage everywhere in my home, to the garage, and I still pick up signal even across the street when I check the mail.

So far so good - it's my 1st Asus router ever, I used to always stick with Trendnet and later with TP-Link. I always set all my routers to reboot weekly on a schedule so I did it with it too - have no issues with stability and rebooting - don't know if there would be any if I wasn't rebooting anyway. Range and signal are fine - I don't have any WiFi 6 devices yet so cannot see big improvement. Some of my older devices like Thermostat wouldn't connect to 2.4 Ghz with WiFi 6 mode enabled so I disabled it for 2.4 Ghz only and my all old things work now. I left WiFi 6 mode on for 5 Ghz and all my WiFi 5 devices still connnect fine. I disabled Smart Connect right away as I had issues with it on some of my devices even on my WiFi 5 router - I just have two SSID's one for 2.4 Ghz and one for 5 Ghz.

Good all around router - reliable, reasonable speed and range, extensive and easy to use features. I upgraded from RT-AX86S that failed on me in two weeks and this one running without any issues. Time will show how long it will last - my previous ASUS failed in 4 years. If you like you can import network configuration from an older ASUS model but that creates minor problems, e.g. prevents you from changing administrator password.

If you run a ton of wireless stuff at your casa you need a powerful and feature rich router. Ton of features and customize settings for gaming, NAS, and security cameras. Range is amazing and all AX200 Intel cards in my laptops and desktops connect at unreal speeds. iOS app is legit easy and a copy of the desktop app. Easy and fully featured. Bonus points that you can 100% turn off ALL LED lights.

I had a 10 year old Asus router that I had to replace when I upgraded to higher internet speeds. My house is big and I had to use 3 routers and bridge them to cover my 3,800 square foot 2 story house. The first story is 2,600 square feet. This new router (Asus RT-AX86U) was powerful enough for the 5GHz channel to cover my entire house. I get 940 Mbps at the router and much of the house gets 200 Mbps - 300 Mbps wirelessly on devices using the 5GHz channel. I was even able to walk to the street before signal strength dropped to unusable.
When I login to the router via web browser by typing 192.168.50.1 into my browser, I see extra stuff has been added in the last 10 years. One nice thing I made use of was under Adaptive QoS > Internet Speed test. Now I'm able to test internet speed directly on router without having to connect via ethernet to the router. This was really handy when I used the built-in VPN configuration that comes with this router to get expressVPN working and see how it impacted the performance. Sadly expressVPN manual openVPN config killed my speed by 87% so I'm back to not using a VPN. For me I need 60 Mbps at the Fire TV to get flawless streams, expressVPN knocked the bandwidth on fire TV to 20 Mbps and at that speed it paused and buffered very often.
For gamers this router worked out of the box plug and play for my son's Xbox One using WiFi. In the past, I had to use a DMZ or unblock ports. The router has been stable and hasn't required reboots. My son said his gaming experience was the best ever and improved so much that any additional improvement would be unnoticeable by humans. He is really good gamer and played me blind folded and still won, he had the maps memorized and used other sense like sound and control vibration. Two of his friends played him with machine guns and he had a knife against both of them simultaneously and still won. After that nobody wanted to play him anymore.

Simple setup, fast and reliable. Able to have 2 apple tv's streaming HD video, multiple laptops and tablets on the internet, gaming consoles and gaming PC's all running at the same time using the internet with absolutely ZERO lag issues.
It literally handles everything you throw at it. We can even change settings and reboot before the streams stop to buffer.

I am an average tech guy so I am just scratching the surface as to what my Asus Dual Band Wifi 6 router can do. Definitely buy it from Best Buy, as I paid under $150 with using a coupon code that I found. Getting 1gig of speed wired and 600 mb wireless throughout my house with even using a TP Link range extender. One of the coolest features is you can turn off the blinking lights across the front of the device, may sound silly but it does make a difference.

Its been 3 years that I am using this router and it is super reliable. Hasn't disconnected or malfunctioned even once in three years. Strong wifi signal that does not drop. Excellent AiMesh capability. Just set it up for auto firmware updates and forget that you have a router. The best router I have owned in 25 years !
