Go with this unless you have Wireless AC devices

I chose this router over more expensive Wireless AC routers for several reasons: 1) I don't have any Wireless AC capable devices, 2) lower cost, 3) figured a slightly older top model Wireless N router would have a more stable hardware design and firmware.
So far, so good. I bought my router from a retail Best Buy store and even put in another $20 for extended warranty after reading some reviews with people having failures after some months in service ... just figured it was worth a few more dollars to have the option to easily return it or exchange for a new one if it dies.
The stability of this router is good - no issues, reboots, etc. First thing I did was upgrade the firmware, then went through all the various screens to set up. I would consider myself an advanced/professional user so the set up was no trouble and the router is doing everything I need it to do (i.e. port forwarding works fine). All the settings I needed for my complicated network setup (non-typical 192.168.100.xxx, disabled DHCP, wireless MAC filter, etc.).
There are a lot of bad reviews out there on just about every router and every brand. I am NOT a fan of Asus based on some previous experiences with their products but gave this router a chance based on reviews. Glad I did. Linksys seems to have lost their quality and there are a lot of other routers out there with just many troubled reviews (even Netgear). So, take a chance on this one and I think you'll be satisfied. The quick setup wizard and overall instructions are probably good enough to get a novice user up and running. Good luck!

Spent days looking at replacing our old D-Link WiFi, with no luck of an easy pick of a new unit. D-Link worked great until I updated the firmware and turned it into a pile of junk. I didn't look before I leaped and everyone on the web said the unit was great until you performed the latest firmware update. Anyway, I looked into what some of my IT friends recommended and each one said to look at an Asus. The N66 was highly rated but I couldn't find any information on the N66R. The floor staff at Best Buy didn't know what the difference was but the Geek Squad took the time to answer my questions of what's new with the "R" model. Bought it with the reassurance that I had 60 days to return it. Silver Premier members get double the return time if you don't like what you bought from BB. So I spent the money took it home and had it blazing within 20 minutes. This unit allowed me to clone the old D-Link so I didn't have to change all the settings that were already in place on all the WiFi toys in the house. My Wife asked me what I had done to boost the signal to her home office. Her office is upstairs and the fartherest Apple product from where the WiFi sits. I explained what happened to the old router and how much I spent on replacing it. She didn't care how much it cost to fix it because she was happy to have a strong and fast signal upstairs. The unit wasn't easy to wall mount but I was able to attach it to the back of our entertainment center. The unit has tons of settings and controls that I'll figure out someday but for now, it's quick and so far very easy to use. I was able to schedule my Son's iPod for web access. Which ends at 10PM on school nights.

Good to go. Other than having to replace the original one I purchased, after buying it. Everything is fine now.

All in all this router solved the problem I set out to solve ! I live in a 2000 square foot two story town home with about four other strong 2.4 ghz signals from neighbors. We started having signal issues and dropping internet connections a few weeks ago and I began trying to solve the problem soon after. After researching and testing I found out I was getting packet loss to the point of a dropped signal on a regular basis. I first bought the new Linksys AC900- EA6200 router. That router had no way to hang it on the wall or stand it up and had only internal antennas like my WRT 400n linksys. After hooking the EA6200 up and testing it I was not impressed with the results and just like the wrt400n I could not get a good 5ghz signal down stairs and the 2.4 ghz signal was not even as good as my old wrt400n. So I took it back and got this Ausus Rt- N66R brought it home immediatley updated the firmware and began finding the best set up. I ended up cascading the Rt-N66R as my main router with my wrt400n as my access point. I now run 4 channels a 2.4 and 5ghz from each router and the Ausus routers 5ghz is far superier while the 2.4ghz is about the same or a little less strong. With the N66R I can achieve my full 50mbps downstream and 4 up sitting at the kitchen table on the first floor on the opposite side of the house through two walls and the floor on my Kindle fire hd 8.9. I put my stepson's computer with the linksys adapter on the wrt 400n's 5ghz and there phones on it's 2.4ghz as well as his PS3. Then I have three computers wired in to the Ausus and I use the Ausus 2.4 and 5ghz for my tablets and phones. Since setting everything up like this I have not has any problems and the Ausus Rt-N66R = Problem solved . I can now stream 1080 P hd video anywhere in the house and never have a problem no matter how many people are using the internet ! If you are in a heavy traffic area this is a good router to get since the 5ghz band has just about as good of a range as the 2.4ghz band. Just use the app called wifi analyzer on Android or IOS to check out your area !

The Asus N66R is a solid router for a good price. I use this router in a townhouse and have excellent coverage upstairs and downstairs. I'm able to stream on multiple devices simultaneously with no interruptions. I have little experience in setting up routers, but the setup of the router was generally easy (one minor hiccup but it was something I could solve on my own). Overall I would recommend the router. It has great coverage, solid speed, the dual band is a great feature, and it comes at a good price (always check for price match, you might be able to save $20 too!).

Solid Wireless

My Old Belkin wireless N900 finally bit the dust, found the Asus at the local best buy - was more of a buy it now than a considered purchase.
However thus far it has proven to be a solid purchase. It may only be wireless N and not the newer AC standard but is still quite fast, noticeably more so than the belkin ever was.
The interface compared to the belkin is much improved and easier to use. Speed limitations with this unit are more of a function of my internet connection.
Range is quite good for my home even when turned down to 25% power still have strong signal and can connect anywhere in the house in our usual hang out spots with no issue. At full power easily covers my house and yard and past my neighbors homes on either side. As such I leave it at about 40% power which covers my house/yard and drive, but drops off quickly from there.
Compared to the Belkin the Asus is significantly more consistent/reliable in it's day to day performance so much so I forget it's there as it simply works and works well unlike the previous belkin or even the cisco I owned before that.

Great Router

This is a fantastic router. The range on 2.4ghz is very excellent and I've never had a 5ghz router before, but I can get a signal in most of my house on the 5ghz. The range is definitely shorter than the 2.4ghz though and will not reach from the 2nd floor to the basement or garage (which is fine).
The performance blows my old TP-Link router out of the water. It was a Wireless-N router, but I could never take advantage of my full internet speed from my phone for some reason with it. However I can with this new Asus router. It also works spectacularly for the PS4 remote play with my Vita. The TP-Link had terrible performance with remote play to the point of being unusable but the Asus works better than directly connecting to the PS4 over wifi!
It was easy to setup and the Asus software is sufficient that I haven't felt the need to try any of the open source firmwares such as DD-WRT.
Highly recommended.

Getting the router up and running took minimal effort. Easy interface and straight forward to get it working. We had a combo router/modem from our ISP. This replaces the router portion of that setup. It was a bazillion times better. We were having access issues with multiple computers and ipads with the combo router/modem. Haven't had a single issue with this product. Range is good for a larger house. Router is located on first floor. No issues connecting anywhere in our house.

Best Router I've Had

This is, so far, simply the best performing router I have ever owned, and by a large margin. The first one I had was a 2Wire, and it worked OK except for requiring password resets after power outages. They fixed this issue, but then the power supply failed. That's when I got my second 2Wire unit, which was a newer model, and it worked OK until the power supply with it failed too. Then we switched ISP's and I needed a cable modem and router. I heard good things about Net Gear from the cable company, so that is what I bought. Bad move. This thing was always losing the wireless connection. I fought with it for a few weeks, then finally gave up and went back to the drawing board, this time going by professional and user reviews. This Asus seemed to get universally positive reviews, so that is what I got, and so far, I have been extremely pleased with it. It looks good, I get good coverage and it's very fast. It was also extremely quick and easy to set up and get running. And best of all, after a few weeks, I have not had to reset, reboot or reload anything. It has just worked and worked well. I couldn't ask for more.

I like this router because it has good range, it's fast and there are a ton of features.
It covers my 3400 square foot house from the basement to the 2nd floor. Signal strength is much better than my Linksys E2500. Areas of the house that had spotty coverage before are now perfect, even on the 5GHz band. I've owned a lot of routers and this one by far has the most features: VPN, print server, file server, free DDNS, 4 guest networks and much more. The User Interface is much more logical than any Linsys, Dlink or Netgear router I've owned.

Wanted to purchase a Router which rated well and provided fast wireless speeds since I upgraded my cable modem. Once I installed and set the router up (easy setup), I was able to increase my speed and distance within my townhome by 3 x's as much. Definitely recommend however, Note: this Router only supports all frequencies except the new AC signals. I wasn't aware until I got home and read the product description in more detail but I am still satisfied with its performance.

Very easy to configure, no-nonsense setup. Allows for manual settings for experienced users, while the wizard gives less tech savvy users a hand when setting it up the first time. Using it is a breeze--the range is fantastic, especially with the external antennas. This router packs some serious processing power too, as speedtests across my network increased by 10%.

Great router (my 2nd Asus), easy to set-up-and-go

Asus makes great routers! This is my 2nd one, bought for my vacation home, in combination with a Motorola - Arris SURFboard 600 Series DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem - White, when I upgraded our service from DSL to cable. Comcast was recommending a combination modem-router; but after reading and hearing horror-stories about setup and performance issues, I opted to take the extra steps and install separate components -- a wise decision!
Combination modem-router means lowest-common-denominator performance. This way, I get Asus performance and reliability (both top-notch), plus continued operation if either component breaks down.
Set-up of this router is a breeze and takes very little time: attach the antennae and the cables, plug in, and go online -- the Asus website comes up automatically and walks you through configuration, even admin-settings and password protection.
My only criticism of this router is that one antenna fit a bit loosely and wanted to shift positions. Not enough to matter.

I bought this to replace my wireless router that was constantly dropping connection. This router was easy to set up the only glitch happened when the setup wizard hung just before completion. I aborted out of the wizard and checked the router settings and everything was programmed correctly. More than doubled the speed of my old N router with better range.

Replaced a router that was probably 10 years old. Was looking for stronger signal and improved performance. This router provides both of those requirements. Very easy to set up. Used the same wireless network ID and password that I used previously. That way once the router was up, all my devices connected with no further efforts.

Fantastic Router with current generation technology. Simple to set up. Good for my whole house (2000sqft) and the 20 devices I and my family have connecting to it. Supports gaming and streaming well. Be sure to have the proper internet package with it from your service provider so you get the most out of this purchase.

I install routers for home and small office customers. This is the top router these days. Out of the box, ASUS has an easy to use for casual users. Great range, over a gigabit/sec wireless speeds are achievable, it can support wireless audio and video (AppleTV, Roku, Hulu, SmartTVs, etc.)
What is even more incredible provided you are technically adept is that you can load TomatoUSB firmware into this router and essentially have a commercially-like featured router. secure VPN to your home for your own personal clouds, VLANs for special, boosted antenna power(*!*!*!), parental controls using schedules or your child's unique device MAC ID, reports on usage, Websites visited, a Linux environment to test your internet service providers service quality, and much more. The ASUS AC66 with TomatoUSB can scan the frequency spectrum to advise you which wifi channel to use to optimize your installation and achieve the highest possible performance. To date I've installed 50+ of these routers and haven't had a single outage or defect.
enjoy! ..mfjv

I was looking to replace and older wireless router with a faster router that had better range. I found the perfect router at a great price. This model (even though its last year's model) lived up to all the good reviews. Product has met or exceeded all my expectations.
