    Excellent Base System

Better than average Mid-Range BASE Desktop system. This Machine comes with Windows 11 Home, Office 365 (30 day trial) it is a base system. The Asus Motherboard has been in nearly every computer I’ve owned and sold for over 30 years, from Sonys to private Builds, they are an exceptional Design. However this was the FIRST ASUS Desktop I ever bought for myself. I am happy to say my Builds and Sony’ have endured for decades, and I expect this Asus will be around just as long and operational. This exceptional BASE system can be used for Social media access, Web Browsing with its truly superior WiFi 6 Dongle and/or Ethernet Direct connect, both nearly equal in speed a remarkable indication of Wireless Tech. The Motherboard as Always makes the core of a system and this Motherboards Diversity makes it stand out against all others. With VGA, DVI and HDMI Graphics outputs you can have 1 log/work monitor, 1 movie/gaming monitor, and 1 Hires Gaming/Movie Monitor you can easily turn this Machine into a GAMING Rig or an Entertainment Center. The Built in Intel GPU operates well and you can add an ASUS killer Graphics card and with your 6 cores and a extra GPUS, 64 gigs memory you’ll get a super Graphics Workhorse or Gaming Monster. Another somewhat Unique benefit is the PS2 and USB ports. PS2 is underrated for Desktops, they are sturdy, not prone to USB software issues, and harder to hack or disrupt. It’s I/O Speed on external USB 3 devices does seem lacking, however all the newest win 10 computers had some tweaking to fix i/o speed for the last 10 years, Win 11 probably follows that trend. I assume I have old unique devices that when windows gets the performance report pipes out an update to fix it. The 512 gig onboard SSD boots up like lightning responds swiftly and allows enough space to run a decent workstation as well as a decent number or graphics apps, games and most needed software. Storage Expansion is also diverse from additional upgrades to onboard ssd, internal ssd and/or spindle drives, and with 4 open Sata ports you can even set up a NAS server with redundancy. Memory is expandable to 64 gigs, which limits the server option to “Midrange” but allows most other growth routes for expansion, even a Ram disk if you’re brave enough! The sd reader is standard on many machines but the smartcard reader is a rather unique item, it does not read my level 7 US security card nor my gen 1 Korean card, I assume special certificates are now involved in a two way authentication model but that was a frill that I indulged myself with for the possible future if EYE scans don’t supplant ID cards before then. I Haven’t opened the case yet to see what other integrated items are hooked into the MB but I suspect I will be pleasantly Happy An Excellent Base system with a great deal of future expansion options, and exceptional corporate history

      Dear RandyC,

      Thank you for your comment.

We do understand your disappointment if the system will not bootup or power on. Usually, you will do the following to resolve the issue. Please verify if the unit is connected to a working monitor using known good video cable and the correct input source from the monitor was selected correctly. Check the power cable was properly connected from the unit to a working surge protector or AC outlet and the power button is being pressed all the way down to trigger a power on signal. Also, please try to disconnect the power cable and let the unit drain for at least a couple of minutes to reset and clear the memory. After doing this, please reconnect power cord then turn on the PC.

If you need further assistance with the Desktop PC or other ASUS products, please email me at cl-rodel@asus.com and I will be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

Great machine for business, families, or students

Overall, this is a great desktop for business, student, or family needs. Startup is fast. The OS is Windows 11 Home. Navigating through Windows, browsing the internet, and opening the typical office applications all fly. In benchmark testing, the only weakness is graphics which scored 4.15%. There is absolutely no problem with that as long as the user is not trying to use the machine for gaming or applications that high require GPU power. The machine’s overall score is in the 52nd percentile with a score of 90% in the desktop category i.e. really good. The SSD speed was 257% so that is contributing to the warp speed of the machine. The machine has sharp looks with an all-black case. There are four USB ports on the front with two being 2.0 and two 3.2 Gen 1. There are also headphone and microphone ports and a card reader that reads smart cards and SD cards. I am somewhat surprised at their choices here. The industry is moving towards USB-C, yet this machine has absolutely no USB-C ports. It is also odd that they have a regular SD card slot but no micro-SD card slot. Of course, a person can use adapters, but every computer I have purchased in the past 5-7 years has had a micro-SD slot and at least one USB-C port. If needed, there is an open five-inch bay for an optical drive or other accessory. On the back, there are another four USB ports in the same combination as the front. For video out, there are the options of HDMI, Display Port, and VGA. Along with the retro theme of a VGA port, there are two PS/2 ports and the expected audio and network ports. One nice modern amenity is the wireless card. This machine comes with Bluetooth and excellent Wi-Fi. The antenna is small, stylish, and magnetic. It connected to my wireless network via 5 GHz at a speed of 1201 Mbps. If needed, there are expansion slots. I can’t ask for much better than that. Inside, there are open slots for two additional DIMMs, a PCIe 4.0 x 16 card, two PCIe 3.0 x 1 cards, M.2 SSD, M.2 Wi-Fi, 3.5 in hard drive bays, and the already mentioned optical drive bay. Two things I would instantly upgrade are the memory and storage space. While the SSD moves really fast, it is small at only 512 GB. A family that likes taking pictures or videos would use that up instantly. I also feel like 8 GB of memory is not enough. Half of that memory is used by Windows so only about 4 GB is free with absolutely no new apps installed or running. Creating one big presentation could easily tie up those other 4 GB. Thankfully there is plenty of room for expansion and those things are relatively cheap. It would still be nice to have them right out of the box. Overall, I would recommend this to a friend. It is a sleek looking computer that works great for the average person’s needs.

The good: I used this computer for a number of different online games. Everything went smoothly. It had no problems processing Blizzard games, or older types of Dos-Based emulation. I did not try any power using (other than having 8 browser windows open at a time) but it handled everything I tried without any problems. Also, the wireless card works better than my previous computer (same brand), which had a built-in wireless adapter, and would intermittently just stop working. (I am savvy enough to know when the wireless card has actually just shut-off, rather than a wireless network problem/weakness) Ping times to a known and stable DNS were consistent, and the network adapter itself did not have any networking hiccups. The solid-state hard drive is nice, as well As far as software, it comes with a free trial version of Office 365. It also has Outlook, if you aren’t using web-based email. The bad: Only 2 Memory Slots, and no IDE options on the motherboard. Very little you can do to upgrade, except for the single PCI slot, and 3X PCI-X slots. (Note, though, that one of the PCI-X slots is used by the Wireless Card.) The Ugly: The wireless card uses a cabled antenna. The antenna looks like a modern bookshelf speaker, but has a magnetic base, and can only be placed on the case of the tower. One drawback to this is that the cord isn't long enough to put it on anything else. But having to stick a magnet on the case--I guess having no IDE (spinning Hard Drives) --makes sense in that case, huh? Overall: It is a decent computer, if you have no desire to expand anything as far as the computer & peripherals (mouse and keyboard) go. It works well out of the box, and it will give you a stable connection (assuming your internet service is good). However, the lack of upgrade-ability may rub hardcore users the wrong way. A good machine for home use, school or home office applications, gaming to an extent, but serious gamers would probably look for a higher-powered machine.

Arrived with strange functionality which may have deterred its proper usage. Have been used now as an offline PC for client who doesn't really need all the toots and whistles that average desktop comes with The return policy for their first unit was adequate although choppy the computer runs well but unfortunately support as with most asus products is lacking Their previous marriage to Sony computers made me and them a lot of money with clients their motherboards were typically the best in the market and lasted well over 20 years remaining easily functional for social media office and many games The reason I rated it four stars is that Asus was much better, I recently got an asus monitor and it reflected asus the company very well high speed functional and well made However the 12th generation asus if bought new is not worth its money as a clearance item it is a steal, You will rarely find a machine with tremendous potential like this one when its price is so reasonable.

I use the computer for work, school, and home as well as some light gaming. This computer has acted as the family computer for a couple of weeks now and has held up very well to our casual use. Some testing with games shows while it isn’t a gaming PC, it isn’t advertised as such and it ran the games like Minecraft, War Thunder, and Roblox that I threw at it without much issue at medium or lower settings. Using it with a Samsung monitor, I’m happy to report it’s a generally smooth experience and the PC doesn’t run very loud, making it a nice addition to any family’s computer room/area. For a very serious, “pro gamer” consumer this wouldn’t work, but for WFM professionals doing office work and Zoom calls or other web browsing, for families who need a computer to perform general tasks like looking up recipes or printing documents, for students needing to type up essays or research, this is an excellent buy and a good value. Being able to game at arguably decently demanding settings is a cherry on top. A quick peek reveals it has the potential for upgradeability, but I suspect that won’t be necessary for the vast majority of users. A powerhouse this is not, but this will hold up to the average user’s needs.

No frills; performs as expected with given specs

This was a difficult machine to provide a star rating for. Is it a pretty good base machine with a lot of potential? Certainly. Does it perform as well as expected based on its specs? Absolutely. Will it blows the door off in any aspect? Well - no. Are there some headscratchers here? Yes - read on and you'll know why. If you are looking for a reasonably priced desktop, who you: -are not going to do much more than Internet browsing; document handling; maybe, for the right games, do some gaming OR -want a good starter machine you can throw some upgrades at in order to do more modern gaming then this is the machine for you. Hardware-wise there are some 'interesting' things going on here. The jet black case is fine, though you need a screwdriver to get in it. The motherboard, which the (all but useless) manual points out, has PS2 connections for keyboard and mouse. Who is that for? A serviceable (again, the emphasis on no frills here) keyboard and mouse are both provided with the machine, but both are USB (well that's expected at least). There are multiple USB slots on the front, and a few on the back. The motherboard also only has 2 RAM slots, so if you want to upgrade the RAM you're looking at replacement and not in addition to. The OOTB 512GB PCIe harddrive is the only 'drive' in the machine, again taking up the only slot of its kind on the motherboard. I will say that when I opened up the case I was a little surprised at the ridiculous amount of available room, though looking back on it I should have known I suppose. This PC generates very little heat and noise. You've got room to put in a new video card if you want, and a bunch of slots for additional harddrives if needed. The one thing I can't speak to is the power supply - you could run into issues depending on what/how much you add. As for running the machine itself, when I first unboxed it, as is always the cases it was due for Windows updates. Quite a few actually, and through multiple reboots that process took over an hour. I did appreciate the fact that outside of the MyAsus software, there was no other obvious 'junk' software included in the Windows 11 install. The MyAsus left a little to be desired in at least one aspect and that was upgrades. Similar software from Dell, HP, and even Acer, allow you to run/install the updates directly in their software. Here I had to download each upgrade (via the App), find it in the folder I sent it to, and run it myself, which was another throwback IMO. The system had no issues running standard apps. Just for giggles I tried a couple of games to see what would happen: Metal: Hellsinger - Modern FPS = ran like a slide show Gungrave G.O.R.E. = modern third person shooter = maybe ran even worse? The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk = This actually ran OK I suspect like a Minecraft or pixel-based games would run just fine on here.

Unboxing the Asus S500TD Performance Desktop you’ll find the tower itself, a wired mouse and keyboard, a corded wifi antenna, power cord, and documentation. The case of the tower is a standard ATX case featuring a steel chassis with painted matte black finish and plastic front. The case does not feature tooless access or drive mounting. The mouse and keyboard are standard office-grade pieces that suffice. The power cord is 6’ in length. On the front of the tower you’ll find a conveniently located power button, two SS USB 3.2 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, headphone and microphone jacks, and a memory card reader. On the back are two more SS USB 3.2 ports, two more USB 2.0 ports, a gig speed ethernet RJ45 port, PS2 ports for mouse and keyboard, one HDMI port, one DisplayPort, one VGA, the standard array of audio jacks, and connectors for a remote wifi antenna (on a movable expansion plate).. Inside you’ll find available expansion space for the addition of one 5.25” accessory (i.e. optical drive) and two 3.5” drives. There is a 300W LiteOn PSU which features 4 available P8 connectors for additional drives but no available connector for a devoted graphics card. The motherboard features one available PCIeX16 and two PCIeX1 slots. In my unit, one of the PCIe slots was blocked by the plate for the wifi antenna connections, but the plate could be easily moved in the event of future expansion. There is currently 8GB of DDR4 RAM, spread across two 4GB sticks. The mobo will support a max 32GB of RAM due to only sporting 2 slots total. This is also an Intel 670P 512GB m.2 NVMe SSD as the lone storage device, integrated Intel UHD 730 graphics and an Intel AX201NGW wireless card which features dual band Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. With these specs, the machine is primarily targeted for home/general purpose/office use. And from that perspective, it functions great. Startup of Windows 11 is consistently quick thanks to the SSD and minimal pre-installed bloat (primarily ASUS configuration and diagnostic software). Apps open quickly, internet browsing was fast, and video streaming up to 4K resolution was stutter free. Knowing that the kids (or grandkids) are still going to try to game on it, I tested a few games as well. Popular "light" choices like Minecraft or Roblox perform satisfactorily. Minecraft at 1080p produced 60fps and at 4k would dip to 40fps. Roblox varied depending on the game selection. Most selections performed fine at 1080p, but at 4k a few games dipped to 5-15fps. More intensive games, such as Rocket League really struggle; 4k was basically unplayable while 1080p yielded a better 30-50fps, but still noticeably struggled.
