This new Asus mid-sized desktop replaces a Dell desktop I’ve been using for a number of years. Unlike previous systems I’ve owned, this one does not come with a monitor or a CD/DVD. It does come with wired keyboard and mouse. It also comes with an external WiFi adapter that magnetically holds onto the desktop when sitting atop of the unit. On the front, it has two USB 3.2 gen 1 ports as well as two USB 2.0 ports. On the back, it offers additional USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 ports. Also included is a VGA port, a Lan RJ-45 port, microphone port, an HDMI port, and several of empty card slots. Also on the front is an IC Smart Card Reader and an SD Card reader. I used the SD Card reader to transfer files from the Dell – handling it this way because I didn’t have the patience of waiting to do the transfer wirelessly. This unit sports an Intel i5-12400 processor, 8GB of ram and 512GB of NVME storage. I found the system to be much faster than the Dell it replaces, plus quieter and without a hint of heat – an issue I’ve run into before with performance systems. The single HDMI port I mentioned was a bit disappointing. I have two monitors I’m porting to the ASUS, both of which use HDMI. I currently have a singled monitor connected, and thus far it hasn’t been too problematic. Going back to the included keyboard and mouse, they are marginal at best. I’ll be connecting my wireless keyboard and mouse shortly to replace them. Setting up the system was quick, while as always, installing Windows Updates took the longest. I didn’t have a ton of apps to port over, but the list did include Microsoft’s 365, a Brother printer driver, a Western Digital driver, Norton’s antivirus, and a few others. One of my benchmarks for how fast a system is comes after installing Google Drive. If you’re not familiar with the app, it syncs files from your desktop to Google Drive. On my old desktop, every time I restarted the system this app would take excruciatingly long to see if files had been modified. Since one folder it backs up has over 13k files, you might as well nap before the desktop is usable. Plus, there was a pronounced hit to the network because the files are Internet-based. In contrast, the ASUS is much, much faster. Restart the system, and it is done booting in less than 20 seconds later (I timed it). Enter your PIN to log into Windows, and that is done shortly thereafter. All the while, Google Drive has been checking the files for out-of-sync conditions and not causing any system/performance delays. This has been a really nice change! I am impressed as well with how well the external Wi-Fi adapter works. It is highly responsive, although I recognize that it will never be as fast as a RJ-45 gig connection. In response to the ASUS only having 1 HDMI, I purchased a multiport concentrator that offers a secondary HDMI port for my second monitor. While I could have purchased a card for one of the unused slots, I’m comfortable handling it this way. Bottom line: I really this this desktop. It is quiet, it’s a fast performer, and it offers sufficient growth potential for future use. For me, this makes it a 5-star solution.

      Dear JEFF,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We're sorry to hear about the issues you're having with this model. The noise that is emitting from the computer is known as coil whine. When the electrical current is increased to a certain point, the magnetic field around the coil can cause it to vibrate, which produces the whiny sound. After a short amount of time the noise should go away as the components regulates. However, if it is that the sound is too much for you, then we would recommend that you have this device sent in for servicing.

I got this PC to replace an aging Win10 desktop (too old to update to 11) in my home. While my laptop generally gets the heaviest use, I still like to have a desktop computer with a nice monitor for everyday tasks, and also to be the primary connection point for my backup devices. Out of the box my immediate impression is that this computer is intended primarily for a home/work from home or small business office environment. It is a basic “black box” computer tower that would look at home in a an early 2000s office. What really gave me the “office” vibe was the inclusion of an integral Smart Card reader, which I have personally never encountered in a home PC. Another interesting item is the inclusion of PS/2 mini DIN mouse and keyboard ports. This wouldn’t be useful to most people at home, but I have some experience with older but useful peripherals that still use these ports for interface. In addition to these less typical connections there is a good assortment of. Front and back USB 3s, Ethernet port, audio/headphone and mic ports, HDMI, Display Port, and a VGA port. The included mouse and keyboard are some of the worst that I have encountered as included with a new PC. I know most people will supply their preferred models anyway, but they were noticeably flimsy and cheap. This PC does not include an optical drive. There are very few things I ever need one for anymore anyway, so this is not really a problem. I have an inexpensive external optical drive I got years ago that works just fine and I keep in the desk drawer just in case, but it may be an issue for someone still using a lot of CD/DVD media for things. This computer also includes something I have not encountered before in a wire-connected, dual channel Wi-Fi antenna. My experience with integrated wireless in desktops has all been with either internal antenna or small screw on stub antennas. I found that in testing moving the antenna around didn’t make any difference in terms of signal strength, but I suppose it may help with some types of interference. While it may be somewhat helpful, The wires do add to the “mess” of wires behind the tower, and if you have the tower under the desk as I do, the wires are a little too short to get the antenna to a good table top or above level. My biggest fear is that I will catch the wires on something and break them cutting off my Wi-Fi. After getting everything unboxed and connected I hit the power and started the setup. I am familiar with Windows 11, and without going into great detail of the setup process I would say that everything was extremely quick and straightforward. From breaking the seal on the box to having a fully usable (minus specific programs I might want to install, but online and activated) PC took a mere 16 minutes. This was a much faster and easier setup than I have had with two prior Windows 11 computers. As I have a Microsoft account and Office subscription I would have been able to get right to work if I had needed to in under 20 minutes, and I think that is pretty outstanding. After clicking through the computer for a while I found that there was a lot less bloatware than I have encountered on other new computers and there is actually a nice selection of useful preloaded apps. In operation I have found this computer extremely “zippy” with every task being extremely fast to load and I have not encountered no slowdowns running the software I have downloaded to do basic photo editing and the other tasks. I expect to be able to do with a home computer. This surprised me somewhat as my older PC had twice as much RAM as this model, but it never performed anywhere close to this in terms of everyday tasks. I don’t think this is the SSD versus the traditional hard drive of my old PC, but rather the processor, which is not only newer, but a “higher rating” than my old desktop’s. The SSD certainly makes a huge difference in terms of startup, and I have seen this with all of my WIN 11 computers that have come with them. From press of the power button to fully loaded desktop it takes just 18 seconds (not counting how slowly I put the PIN into the login screen). While some might prefer a larger SSD or a hybrid setup with an SSD for the operating system and a traditional hard drive for storage, I have been using separate, redundant storage drives for years so the lower capacity SSD is no issue at all for me. One final note from the “physical” side; this is the quietest “tower” computer I have ever used. It has a fan, and you hear it briefly at startup, but in operation I have found that this computer is virtually silent, without even the familiar sound of a hard drive. Overall, this PC has exceeded my initial expectations. It will be a nice addition to my home office for those times I need a computer for something and my laptop is snug in its carrying case in another bag. It has handled everyday tasks quickly and without frustrating loading and lagging, and it has proven that it can handle even more strenuous items that I need it to do from time time.

I have several gaming laptops and one gaming tower in my household. This is a nice Asus desktop computer with a build of an Intel i5 processor, 8 GIG of RAM, and a solid-state drive that is a half of a terabyte (512GB). I'm personally utilizing this machine for general things such as emailing, some word processing etc. I find its performance to be quite good for general usage. This no-nonsense machine is very capable of handling programs very efficiently. I found that the performance was never bogged down or slow. Response was snappy and always quick, which includes boot up time, etc. The product comes with the newest Widows 11 operating system, which of course needed some updates after initially booting it up. This product was sorely welcomed into my household, as my present tower is running Windows 10 and is too old to upgrade to windows 11. The product comes with a bare bones mouse and keyboard which worked well in tandem. The unit is not supplied with any cables for a monitor hookup. The tower is non-descript and very ordinary looking. The computer has a microphone jack, card reader, 1 Ethernet port, 1 HDMI output, 4 USB Ports, and 1 DisplayPort output etc. It also lacks a CD drive. In my home use and testing of this product, I was quite pleased with the computer's performance. This is my go-to computer for general things and everyday tasks. Boot up times are fast and there is enough RAM to handle my particular multi-tasking situations with ease. The unit ran well, and I really have no complaints to speak of. A note on gaming: If you are a hard-core gamer, look at a more powerful unit from ASUS with at least 16 GIG Ram. If you are just entering the gaming platform this probably would be a good bang for the buck computer to run your games but absolutely not at maximum settings. If you are in the market for a really nice "basic" computer, look no further than this ASUS model. I was very happy with every aspect of it. Definitely recommended.

Old-school design but fast and versatile

Consider the desktop computer. Once a high-tech marvel, later just a workhorse for home and office, it now nears extinction. But not quite yet. Some people still want a bulky desktop tower like this one for its reliability, flexibility and versatility. And this Asus Performance Desktop is certainly a great starting point for those in the market for one. The "performance" moniker is a little hyperbole, unless this is is the first new computer you have bought in some time. Equipped with the latest 12th generation Intel Core i5 CPU, 8 GB or RAM, 500GB SSD and WiFi 6 network card, it is certainly aa very capable computer. But it's a long way from being a hot rod in the PC universe. Still, the good thing about a desktop tower is it is designed for easy expandibility and upgradeability. So if you want to add more RAM later, a larger capacity SSD or a faster graphics card, it's easy enough to do. Remove a couple of screws to get inside and start tinkering. For most people though, this computer is probably powerful enough as is. It will easily tear through basic chores like browsing the Internet, e-mail, word processing, basic spreadsheets and even simple photo or video editing. Videos play just fine too. Only power users, like gamers and those doing large and complex video editing projects, will need more horsepower. Setup is a breeze, thanks to Window 11, a moderately powerful CPU and a speedy SSD, which is many, many times faster than the old spinning mechanical hard drives. Just answer a few questions (make sure you have your Microsoft and Google passwords ready), download a few updates and you are good to go. It took me about 10 minutes from start to finish. A little longer if you include all Windows 11 updates, which tend to dribble in and require multiple restarts, Rebooting only takes about 10 seconds. (You do need a speedy Internet connection for all those large update files) One pleasant surprise is how capable the onboard graphics engine proved to be. Most modern CPUs now have that built right in and this one is no exception. In this case, Intel's new UHD 730 GPU. That's the low end of integrated graphics lineup now but still can easily handle routine chores, including playing most video formats. HDMI, display port and VGA ports are built it for your monitor. (Not included) This Asus desktop has one open full size slot inside for a more powerful video card, if you want to go that route. But the onboard 300-watt power supply can't deal with any card remotely capable of serious gaming, so you would need to swap that out too if you want to upgrade to a gaming rig. Also be aware the included 8GB of RAM is on two sticks that fill both available slots on the motherboard, so if you want to upgrade to 16 or 32GB, you would have to dump the existing RAM and start over. All these new parts are expensive, so generally speaking, you are better off just buying a gaming rig to start with if you need a computer with that much power. It's almost always a lot cheaper than adding parts or swapping out parts later on a basic computer like this one. While this PC is very capable, Asus made some odd design choices. The oddest is the inclusion of PS2 ports on the back for a wired keyboard and mouse. I haven't seen any hardware that uses a PS2 connection in decades. But if you have a very old mouse or keyboard that use them, you are good to go. The included keyboard and mouse, notably, don't have PS/2 connectors. They use USB instead, which has been the norm on computers for some time. But their designs are both quite dated as well, starting with the fact they are wired instead of wireless, now the preferred option. The full-sized keyboard with full numeric keypad is also something of a throwback, with long-throw IBM Selectric type keys instead of short throw chicklet keys. I am old enough to have used the IBM type keyboards when they were standard on typewriters and computers. But again, I haven't seen a computer keyboard of this design in many years. It works fine but is very lightweight, cheaply made and noisy. Lots of clickity, clackity. One other oddity, which I have never seen before on a stock PC: It comes with a dual band wired external antenna for WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5. In this case, the antenna is a thin slab of plastic with a clever hinge in the middle that twists sideways to form an L shape. It's magnetic so you can stick it anywhere on the metal tower case that gives you the best reception. A thin dual-lead wire has little screws on at the end that screw into two little nubs on the back of the computer. It works well enough but I did not find reception was any batter than on other devices I have with no external antennas. For all you USB fans out there, you will be happy to hear there 8 USB ports on this computer. Half are the more modern USB 3 (or 3.2) type, with the rest USB 2. Four on the front and four on the back. All use the larger USB A ports instead of the more compact USB C. Finally, there is built in sound, with ports front and back for speakers, headphones and microphones. And slots in the front for an SD card and a "smart card." Not sure what that is used for. Overall, this Asus Perfomance Tower is a good basic desktop computer that will probably satisfy all but most power-hungry households or businesses.

    Great mid-level PC!

This is a nice mid-level computer that will handle most of your everyday tasks with ease! Out of the box this is a nice minimalistic designed PC. I could see this easily fitting in any home office. It doesn’t have tons of flashy lights or anything like you would find on a gaming PC. It’s a very nice minimalistic black box. As far as ports go, you have 4 USB ports on the front as well as headphone and mic jacks. There is also a SD card reader as well as a smart card reader. Seems like that would mainly be for office use and not much of a home user kind of feature. On the back you have another 4 USB ports. There is a Display port, HDMI, and even a vga port. So pretty much any monitor you have, you’ll be covered! Then there is the usual network cable and speaker and microphone ports on the back as well. There is even the old style ps/2 ports for mouse and keyboard if you use those as well. Under the hood there is a Intel Core i5-12400 processor 8GB Memory and a 512GB SSD hard drive. The hard drive will be enough to store the operating system and all your programs, but you will definitely want to add some extra storage if you save a lot of files locally. The processor and memory is plenty to handle most of your everyday office tasks as well as web surfing, watching online videos, and editing pictures and things. If you are looking to do gaming or editing videos, you might need something a little more powerful. Not that you can’t do those things with this machine, but it might be a little slower. There are only 2 slots for RAM and they are both filled, so you’d have to remove existing RAM in order to put more in. Mine came with Windows 10 installed, but it updated it to Windows 11 once I started it up and went through the setup process. Thankfully Asus doesn’t fill its PC’s with a lot of bloatware like other manufacturers do. You have all of the stuff that comes with Windows and then just a couple Asus programs, and that’s all it comes with. I have it in my home office and used it mainly for web surfing, checking email, and watching online videos on YouTube and Netflix. It was extremely quick and I had absolutely no problems with it. I also loaded up Adobe Photoshop and Premiere just to see how well they would do. I had no problems with either program, although working with and rendering out 4K 60fps videos was a little sluggish and time consuming compared to a more higher end PC. But it can be done. Overall, I would highly recommend this if you’re looking for a mid-level computer. I think you will be very happy with it, and the price is very reasonable for what you get!

Great PC for what we were needing, home office. We were able to connect two monitors on the built in motherboard, but one is HDMI and the other is DPI.
