A Creator’s Dream Machine with a Few Surprises

I’ve been testing the ASUS ProArt P16 for a week, and I can honestly say this laptop is built with creators in mind. The 16” 4K OLED touchscreen is absolutely stunning — colors are rich and accurate, making photo editing and video work a pleasure. It’s also bright enough to use in a well-lit room without any issues. Performance-wise, it’s been smooth and fast for everything I’ve thrown at it, from editing high-res photos to casual internet browsing. I spent a good amount of time using StoryCube and MuseTree, and I was pleasantly surprised by how useful they are. StoryCube makes organizing and tagging media a lot easier than my usual workflow, and MuseTree is a fun way to brainstorm and flesh out creative ideas. For productivity, I love the comfortable keyboard and responsive touchpad. The touchscreen adds a nice level of flexibility, especially for quick sketching or marking up content. Battery life has been decent — not all-day for heavy use, but enough to get through a good work session. If I had to nitpick, it’s a little on the heavier side compared to some other laptops I’ve used, and the fans can kick up when working on large files. But that’s a fair trade-off for the performance and screen quality you’re getting. Overall, the ProArt P16 feels like it was made for creatives who need power, organization tools, and an incredible display all in one package.

    Great Machine, Meh Software

I think it's only fair to review this laptop in 2 parts. One is the machine itself, which is excellent. And the other is the AI software they're promoting with it, which is not excellent. Machine: The laptop is powerful, thin, light, and has a beautiful screen. Plenty of memory to do art/animation/AI processing. The processor is also powerful enough to handle things at the level I have been using them. The hard drive is a good size, though you'll want to shift some larger projects off to cloud storage to keep local free for the fast processing. The touchscreen is responsive and has good resolution. I did some basic drawing on it and can say it works well as an animation/comic drawing pad. The screen itself is beautiful and shows colors accurately with rich blacks. I have a stylus I use, but didn't use it with the machine because I was trying to use just the equipment that came with it. Which brings up an oddity: it has a circular pad in the upper right hand corner of the touchpad that they say is designed creativity apps. I'm not going to write it off just yet, but I really don't get the point of it. I'm currently researching the best way to utilize it and will hopefully find its true power because it is not there arbitrarily. The power this thing contains is impressive. You can generate AI images and short clips in very little time. I did a short project in it and the prompt generative images were all produced in 30-60 seconds with varying results (I'll detail that in the software section). 2D animation is seamless and also generates very quickly. I dabbled in Blender and did some 3D rendering of 3D prints and the machine was close to instantaneous. When I did some photorealistic renderings it kicked into high gear and generated those models faster than my desktop. This will become my new processing machine for 3D and animation. It has a couple USB-C ports, a couple USB-A port, an audio port (oddly enough), and a HDMI port. The HDMI port seems a little underwhelming but I can see the usefulness of having a standard port instead of a mini-DisplayPort I guess. Over all, the hardware is impressive and a great option for creative users that want a midrange laptop with lots of power and a quality screen. Software: This is where the machine really lacks in my opinion. It comes with two ASUS AI programs: Story Cube and Muse Tree. Story Cube is designed to organize and manage all your media. I can understand the draw, but either I haven't figured out the right method or it has some growing to do. I find myself having to adjust and direct it to do things even when things are already somewhat sorted. I have things broken down by project and it pulled those in without any issues, but when I tried to use the intelligent part of it I was underwhelmed and am just not sure why I would need it. However, I'm going to let it keep going and see if I need to amend this later. Muse Tree is like an AI storyboarding utility which is something I've been looking for and had high hopes for before using. That might mean I set my sights a little too high and I'm being unfairly tough on it. You kick in text prompts to start moving down a line of bubbles and it'll generate paths with those bubbles and you can expand or contract the branches as necessary. That part works great. It also has an AI image generator to give you a visual representation of those prompts/bubbles. That is where it lacks severely IMO. It is quick to generate them and some of the colors and designs are impressive, but its very limiting. I wrote a short paragraph and it seemed to cue in on a few specific words and no matter how I tried to modify it, it did the bare minimum. So I tried to expand bubble by bubble and it would reset portions of the image that looked good in previous bubbles while trying to expand them. Very strange. There is a fun portion of it that lets you sketch and give it a prompt and that seemed to work better, but it was still too limited. I quickly drew a basic family in a car and I didn't pay attention to details like fingers. However, in the prompt I told it a human family and it still generated the images with arms going opposite directions, one hand had 8 fingers while the other had 3, and nothing looked natural. When I simplified it I had even more mixed results. I've been using it for a couple weeks now and doing some research into it and it just seems to be a meh product. There are also a couple of productivity programs ProArt and Dial Control programs. These are to fine tune and adapt the machine to your settings and shortcuts. These are very well fleshed out and have a lot of thought and power designed into them. I can see me working for a few months to get them dialed in, but they already have some useful settings I've configured. However, that dial control thing still eludes me because I'm so used to just grabbing presets from the drawing programs that it's not intuitive for me to adjust to the dial. Like I said, I'm going to keep configuring it and seeing what programs I like with it and what ones I'll keep my drawing tablet configuration set. Recap: The machine is worth the money, but part of the selling highlight for this particular series is the added in software and I just don't think it's worth the extra money for it. If they keep developing them and improving, then maybe, but there is a lot of freeware out there that does the same things only better.

ASUS ProArt Laptop Review – A Content Creator's Perspective As someone who recently transitioned from Apple, ThmustProA has completely exceeded my expectations. The 4K display is stunning — crisp, vibrant, and visually immersive. I've had people literally ask me if I was using a MacBook, and I proudly told them, "Nope, this is an ASUS… with a Windows processor!" The matte black finish looks very nice. Touchscreen + Editing Workflow = Seamless The touchscreen makes navigating through windows, apps, and especially video editing in CapCut feel intuitive and precise. The hands-on control is unmatched when you're chopping up clips and trying to land on the exact timestamp. The screen responsiveness adds to the whole creative process — especially for someone like me who thrives on visuals and flow. Speaker Quality That Surprised Me ASUS ProArt Laptop Review – A Content Creator's Perspective As someone who recently transitioned from Apple, I must say that the ASUS ProArt has completely exceeded my expectations. The 4K display is stunning — crisp, vibrant, and visually immersive. I've had people literally ask me if I was using a MacBook, and I proudly told them, "Nope, this is an ASUS… with a Windows processor!" The matte black finish adds a sleek, professional touch, making the entire setup feel luxury-adjacent. Touchscreen + Editing Workflow = Seamless One of my favorite features is the touchscreen. It makes navigating through windows, apps, and especially video editing in CapCut feel intuitive and precise. The hands-on control is unmatched when you're chopping up clips and trying to land on the exact timestamp. The screen responsiveness adds to the whole creative process — especially for someone like me who thrives off visuals and flow. Speaker Quality That Surprised Me The built-in speakers honestly amazed me. I can't remember when a laptop gave me this volume and clarity without headphones. Whether I'm watching YouTube, previewing edits, or catching a Netflix break, the sound is full, clear, and consistent. It's a significant win. Taskbar Customization made for an Efficiency Hack I love that I can customize my taskbar with widgets. This is a valuable tool for someone like me who juggles multiple platforms, tools, and browser tabs. Being able to toggle between apps, monitor metrics, and upload content across platforms without constantly switching screens makes my workflow smoother and more productive. MuseTree A Creative Companion The MuseTree app made me smile.. As someone who also uses Midjourney, I find this an excellent complementary tool. It's ideal for brainstorming, visually mapping content, and building post ideas. The visual tree layout helps you see how your thoughts connect and evolve. My only critique? The touchscreen lacks pinch-to-zoom functionality. You can zoom using the touchpad, but being able to do it directly on the screen would've elevated the experience. Still, typing in a prompt and watching MuseTree spark creative direction is fire. It'll be part of my content planning toolkit. Story Cube: Simple but Smart The Story Cube desktop app feels like a practical solution for visual content management. It's beneficial for organizing footage and offloading content from my phone now that I have 1TB of storage. I wouldn't call it super advanced, but it gets the job done and integrates well with Instagram, which I use frequently for my brand. It's basic but cleanly and functionally designed. A Few Notes on Design + Hardware • The keyboard froze once, but everything worked fine after a quick reboot. • The charger is bulky, no way around that — but the laptop itself is sleek and refined, so I'll take the tradeoff. • It's heavy, but I've dealt with bulkier machines. This one feels sturdy and premium, not clunky. ⸻ Final Thoughts Overall, the ASUS ProArt is a strong contender for creatives — especially those who are used to the Apple ecosystem but want more flexibility, storage, and editing power. The display is gorgeous, the tools are functional, and it supports the demands of a digital creator like me. With a few minor tweaks, this would be perfect. But even as-is, it's a powerful laptop that gets the job done — beautifully. The built-in speakers honestly shocked me. This laptop can do alot, and it has the resources to do it quickly. Look and Feel: Simply put, it's gorgeous. For a 16' screen, the overall laptop doesn't feel that large - plus it's incredibly thin and light considering the power it's housing. With full size SD and HDMI ports, I don't really have to worry about dongles or adapters. It's a pleasure to carry around - even if I find opening the screen to be a bit delicate (the lip is a small for my fat fingers). Specs: Let's just say having an RTX5070, 2TB NVMe and 32GB RAM is plenty of horsepower for graphic and video work. This also means the laptop is perfect for gaming, but it's geared more for hardcore creativity. The trackpad has a little dial (Asus Dial) that seemed gimmicky at first, but once I started really using it and setting up the configurations...I'm kinda shocked other manufacturers aren't stealing this idea. It comes in really useful for video scrubbing and means I can go without my external dial (in a pinch, of course). One nitpick in this area: Such a powerful tool for creativity really should come with a pen. Software: OK, I gotta talk about the Asus creativity and AI ecosystem that comes with the laptop. StoryCube is a good media management app. It's not too overdone, but I recommend reading the user guide. It, along with MuseTree, has a learning curve. Speaking of MuseTree...I just found it confusing - at least when it decided to completely start. It has a slow load time and sometimes gets stuck during its load process. But once I get to the actual app, it's janky. The AI sample library seems limited, but luckily there's the GenAI feature that takes my drawings (again...an included stylus or pen would have been nice) and turns it into something better. Usually. Honestly, the interpretations, even with the included prompting, have yet to produce anything that I can really use. That said, the entire system is locally installed, does not require any additional costs, and is configurable enough where I hope future updates will expand and resolve its shortcomings. Overall: Despite my problems with the MuseTree software, I think it has potential, so I won't deduct any stars for that. After all, the laptop is still powerful, gorgeous and has a crisp OLED screen. Software can always be updated and there are other creativity app options.

Powerhouse to Help With Your Design Needs

I like the idea of a laptop built around design and creation. The laptop needs to be powerful and the software needs to be intuitive. The Asus ProArt P16 hits on those needs - for the most part. First the hardware. The P16 I have has 32GB RAM, 1TB Hard Drive, the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and a NVIDIA GTX 5070 GPU with 8GB RAM. The laptop also has a 16" OLED touch screen display that is beautiful. This machine is a powerhouse. As far as upgradability it is limited to only upgrading the storage. RAM upgrades are not possible. This is a bit disappointing as you may want more RAM over time as products and software progress. Software This laptop is built around design which is what it provides. ASUS provides a suite of software under the Pro Creator Hub platform. In there you will find several tools for creation: Muse Tree - This is an interesting tool that allows you to build on a single idea and develop and grow the idea via a "tree" based system. You can add branches to the tree and merge the branches and the system will help you keep the flow going. A very interesting tool with real potential to help build a thought out idea for design. Story Cube - This tool allows you to bring in your media from different types of devices (computers, drones, phones, etc.) and put them in a logical format. You can have the pictures or videos show up on a map of where they were taken. You can also have them arranged in a chronological timeline. From there you can crate reels. The software uses AI to help group media by person or activity. I found this tool very useful. CapCut - CapCut is a video editing tool that is very easy to use and provides templates and effects to enhance your video creation The laptop also has an interesting feature called Dial Control. There is a virtual "ring" on the touchpad that you can activate to allow quick access to applications or settings changes such as brightness and sound. You can have it only control one item or multiple items/applications. Nice touch. I have worked with this for several days and am having fun learning about the design applications and their potential. You can access the video tutorials in each applications so keep that in mind as you go about learning to use each. Overall I am very happy with this laptop. The power is there and the screen is beautiful. The applications are useful (and will continue to enhance with future updates). The only reason I removed a star is the installed applications are really for home use design (from my perspective) and not professional design work. You can do alot but it may not bring you the complete solution. You can add tools and the laptop is powerful enough to run them. Overall I recommend this laptop for what it is - a design friendly device.

Runs our Golf Sim like we’re at the Course!!

My neighbor and I decided to build a golf simulator in his house so we could play year round golf (we live in Delaware). After assembling all the pieces the laptop was the final item and when this became available I jumped at the opportunity!! We have higher end equipment so we needed a laptop that can run it all and store all the courses we wanted to play. The RTX 5070 is an absolute beast, it has no issues rendering the courses in 4K and displaying them on the projector, it truly provides a lifelike experience!! Zero clipping and the transition from the ball hitting the screen to displaying on the simulator is almost instantaneous, like less than a second…it’s so fast!! With the 2TB SSD we’ve downloaded the entire GSPro library and 100 additional courses and it’s barely half full!! The AI suite (Windows Co-Pilot) has been super helpful & we’re using it to help design our own courses. We thought it would as simple as telling it to make the course with the basic info however it’s turned out to be quite the involved process. After lots of questions, research (and help from the AI) we've started to master how to do it. With simple instructions (build a par 3 hole, championship style, in the likes of TPC sawgrass #17 but add 30 yards) we can get a basic layout and then we start adding to it. The AI seamless works with the design software to add terrain, place obstacles, set tee boxes and green layouts. The options are endless!! This does in minutes what I would guess would take weeks to design and render!! It’s truly remarkable as to how easy it is to give commands and watch it work its magic…As someone who has been anti AI, this has been changing my mind in a huge way!! There are some drawbacks; initially when we started the fan is loud, the laptop gets hot and the battery doesn’t last over 3.5 hours HOWEVER I am running a golf sim and designing courses so this is to be expected. After buying a cooling table, the fan has quieted a bit and its runs a lot cooler and we’ve upped the battery life to 4 hours. All in all an amazing laptop with an AI suite to make anyone jealous!

This is a beast of a laptop for performance. It games very well, but that’s not what it’s intended for. This is intended for content creators who need a little more horsepower to process those 4K videos. I was very excited to try StoryCube which is Asus‘s in-house media management repository. Unfortunately, it does not work with network attached storage so using that potentially powerful program with my NAS, which is where I store all my photos and media, was not possible. Hey, if you’re listening, you may want to add that function as a lot of creators use NAS and I would really love to see what StoryCube brings to the table when it comes to media management. The laptop itself is very thin and includes a low profile power brick, considering the graphics processor inside. The 5070 handles everything I threw at it and then some and the 32 gigs of RAM chew through multiple open tabs and I could not crash it under my normal workload. I will say that the build quality of this laptop feels a little less premium because of its plastic look and I fear for its durability on down the road. I am currently using this as a DAW running Pro Tools, and again my workflow does not cause the slightest hiccup. Muse Tree is very much in its infancy, but I do find it useful in creating some images. Again, this is basically Asus’s in-house answer to other AI image generators and while I found it amusing, like most image generators, it needs more work to add utility to you workflow. There are different modes to try my favorite is drawing mode. You can draw a picture and have AI enhance it for you. That’s where I got my best results and even had a couple wow moments. Both of these programs are locked to the Asus ecosystem moreover, the Pro Art laptop series so in order to try this experimental AI you will need a Pro Art laptop.
