The PC is fantastic; however, ROG does not have a version of this PC with 2TB internal storage. This posting is incorrect, as the computer is only built and sold with 1TB. Thinking this was a mistake, I returned the PC for a new one, thinking it would come with 2TB, but it didn't.
The staff at my BestBuy helped me return and order the same PC again, and it was on sale for $200 less when I reordered it, so it was a small win...
This PC is a great value on sale; however, do not be fooled into thinking it has 2TB of storage.

Like other buyers, this one lacks an integrated graphics card, meaning a few HDMI ports on this computer will not work. Besides that, this is a beast—the best budget PC on the market. I am delighted with this purchase.

ASUS ROG is a solid Pre-built PC Option

I’ve always got a computer being worked on in my office, either a desktop being built or a laptop under repair. Often helping friends with their first custom build, so I don’t normally go for pre-built PC’s due to cost and choice of configurations. But Asus has tempted me with their new refresh of the ROG Gaming Desktop, using the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super and Intel i7 14th gen. I was in search of a reasonably priced desktop PC for a friend that wouldn’t need any tweaking to get working nor assembly.
Pros:
- Powerful, like top 99% of all PC’s out there.
- Slim tower with plenty of added features.
- Future upgrade options.
Cons
- Limited Storage capacity expansion. Only one 2.5 drive slot on bottom of case.
Packaging was very well done, everything fit perfectly within the box, with a special wrap for the PC itself to protect from dust and particles while shipping. The case Asus chose for this PC is a slightly slimmer than average mid ATX tower. 4 USB's on top, 2 USB A and 2 USB C. Additionally, a headphone and mic jack, which is a nice touch not always seen these days. The side of the case has a headset hook built in. Asus went light on the RGB lighting, opting to include a LED strip on the front panel and LED light string around the inside of the case rather than separate RGB on the components. It's not as eye catching as other designs but still screams "I AM A GAMING PC" enough.
Setup was standard with Windows 11, but the wonderful thing about Asus is there being a lack of bloatware. One of my biggest complaints with pre-built PC’s is the amount of bloatware pre-loaded onto the PC, which then requires a clean install of windows before you can even use it. But ASUS did it right, with only Armor Crate and MyAsus preinstalled. Armor Crate is a must have for updating the firmware and controlling the devices on your computer such as lights or fans. MyAsus makes registering and raising any warranty requests easy.
Another thing Asus did right on this Gaming Desktop is the specs on paper! I got the Asus ROG Desktop model G16CHR-I7KF4070SVR which has an MSRP of $1,750 USD and specs that are at the high-end for Gaming PCs in 2024. For a CPU, this model had the Intel Core i7 14700KF (20 Cores with 8 Performance and 12 Efficient cores, 28 Threads) running an Asus AIO. For the GPU, this model has an Asus branded Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super, which is the newest refresh of the 4000 series. RAM is started at 32GB of DDR5 running at 5600MHz (PC5-44800), with 2 of 4 slots populated and a maximum RAM limit of 64GB. Storage wise, this has 2 x 1TB NVMe drives Western Digital SN560, these are slightly slower drives than the newest out there with only 4.3 GB/s Read and 3.1 GB/s write, but that should be plenty for playing some games. This is all powered by a 750 watt 80 plus gold PSU, in the box included are additional power plugs if you end up needing them for future upgrades or add ons.
With all this goodness on paper, the only downside of this whole build is that there are limited upgrade options for storage space. The case seems to have one 2.5in drive slot on the bottom, at least that I could see. So otherwise, the only options are to upgrade the underwhelming NVMe drives, which isn’t really a bad choice either.
I use PassMark Performance Test to benchmark my PC’s, currently using version 11.0 build 1013 for testing the Asus ROG Desktop. This model scored in the 99th Percentile, with a score of 13754.6, which basically means this PC is better than 99% of the computers tested. Though there are plenty of other tests out there, in the end the only good test is a real test. So, to the Game Play tests.
I tested out two games I am currently rotating between, Fortnite and Helldivers 2. I play with a resolution of 2K, and most settings set to High, I disable motion blur and bloom effects as I don’t enjoy how they look. With these settings, I was averaging 110 FPS on both games. I did hit some FPS drops into the high 80’s and peaks up near 135 FPS, but the averages during normal gameplay was around 110 FPS. With some tweaking, you could easily average 120 FPS at 2K on most games. Your results may vary from game to game and monitors used. Overall, this will be more than enough PC for my friends to use, maybe even too much!
One of the benefits of a desktop over a laptop is the ability to upgrade in the future. The Asus ROG has 2 open RAM slots, 2 occupied M.2 slots, and 6 SATA ports. Though before you go slotting in 2 more RAM sticks, you might want to check the compatibility, as most motherboards these days only support 4 sticks of DDR5 running below 5200MHz. In general, it is better to run only 2 sticks of RAM at the Total RAM amount you want to take advantage of the faster DDR5 speeds.
I would recommend this as a great bang for your buck prebuilt if you don’t want to go through the hassle of a custom build or need something you can pick up and plug in today. Especially if you have any Best Buy Rewards or discounts to take advantage of, then this is an amazing offer! The only con I could find on this pre-built is the storage options and included NVMe drives, but that can be resolved by upgrading the 2 NVMe drives to larger capacity drives in the future. I will be considering the Asus ROG Desktop line as a possible solution for future custom builds!

Top Fans make Clicking Noise repeatedly

Purchased this very nice pre-built last week. I've had it operational for about 5 days now. Everything runs smooth, however I have noticed the top fans make a clicking noise which is quite annoying. If you are hyper sensitive to noises like me, this can make or break your enjoyment. I tried inspecting the fans to see if maybe a screw was loose but I could not diag/repair the issue. Hopefully Geek Squad or the OEM can address the issue and fix. Until then, my rating will stay at a 2/5.
Other than the clicking noise the fans make, the machine is quite nice. The speed & performance is dialed in. Aesthetically pleasing. For the content and gaming I do, I would recommend the build.

This is a solid build for the price. Bought it for my wife. Maybe could have built the same machine for slightly less if I built it myself but the difference is minimal enough that it’s not worth the headache.

PERFORMANCE
There isn’t anything to complain about concerning the performance of the new Asus ROG Strix. The power of Nvidia’s new 40-series GPU’s are quite impressive. This new Asus replaces my well used gaming desktop from one of Asus’ primary competitors. At the time, my desktop was a decent mid-tier gaming rig. However, as time went on and games became more demanding, I was in need of an upgrade. The previous manufacturer offered just enough space to allow for some minor upgrades. After upgrades, my current configuration is as follows: i7-9700K (8 Cores / 8 Threads), 32GB DDR4 RAM, AMD Radeon 6700XT graphics card, and a Corsair 120mm AIO Liquid CPU cooler, a 750W Corsair 80+ power supply, along with numerous 120mm case fans to try to help with poor air circulation.
My modest current set-up is adequate for a majority of my needs, but is no way considered a gaming powerhouse, not that it ever was. Using AMD’s default performance settings via their Adrenalin app for the graphics card, my current rig can barely muster the following results:
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege: 65.5fps
Fortnite: 119.3fps
Roblox: 58.3
Forza Horizon 5: 59fps
Apex Legends: 60fps
Counter Strike 2: 66fps
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: 52fps
Again, everything is playable, but nowhere near impressive. The 6700XT combined with the 9700, both the CPU and GPU hover around 90% utilization while gaming at 3840 x 1440p resolution and a 75Hz refresh rate.
What was extremely disappointing about my current pre-built was that while it too, promised great gaming performance at the time, it didn’t deliver. When I first took delivery, it was entirely air-cooled and case air flow was atrocious. Temps immediately spiked to upper 90’s on both the CPU and GPU and the computer immediately thermal throttled. This was, no joke, with 10 minutes of firing it up for the first time. Gaming sucked. There were stutters, lag, overheating, and it was so noisy I could hear the fans screaming for mercy over my noise-cancelling headphones. It took several hundred dollars in upgrades to make it playable. I had to install 3 case fans, and an AIO just to keep temps in check. The whole design was lackluster and not well thought out.
Having poor prior experience with gaming pre-builts, I still really wanted to give the Asus a shot. I couldn’t wait to try out an Asus PC with a modern graphics card. There has been a TON of hype about Nvidia’s ray tracing abilities and how their new DLSS tech increases frame rates and smoothes playback. I was just hoping the card and desktop could live up to the hype. I was also hoping I wouldn’t have to sink a bunch of money into it to make it usable and stable on a daily basis and stable like I had to on my last one.
Asus did not disappoint. Even during my longest, most strenuous, and most demanding gaming sessions the Asus has NOT disappointed in any way. Case airflow is impressive. The desktop has maintained its cool no matter how long I’ve played or how much I’ve asked. You can hear the 4070’s fans while playing hard, but they are not obnoxious by any means. Same with the AIO, it does a great job at keeping CPU thermals stable and consistent. While temps will easily reach the 80’s, it keeps them in check and does it with no fuss. The ability to keep cool, fresh air moving into the case is key and Asus should be commended on their design. My small, room-sized air purifier is louder than the ROG Strix. Excellent work Asus. You should be commended for an excellent case design.
Speaking of gaming, how does the new Asus ROG Strix perform compared to my previous build? It is a night and day difference. Results that were humble, at best, are now impressive and quite frankly so good, I had to re-run several benchmarks to make sure they were correct. Just, WOW.
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege: 393fps
Fortnite: 424fps
Forza Horizon 5: 165fps
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3: 241fps
What isn’t reflected in the FPS results are the behind-the-scenes settings. My previous gaming desktop mustered its numbers with modest settings. Not the Asus and its Nvidia RTX 4070. EVERY single game benchmarked at Max quality. Forza, CoD, R6, every game placed its quality settings to max. There was enough overhead to allow me to turn on ray tracing in CoD.
It is hard to put into words how much better my games now look on the Asus. Even at identical resolutions (max my gaming monitor supports is 3840 x 1440), graphics are noticeably better. Like the old saying, the difference is in the details and these games are no exception. It’s not just the smoother frame rates, all the textures, shadows, lighting, EVERYTHING is clearer, cleaner, crisper. Visuals are MARKEDLY improved as is input lag.
This is the first time I’ve EVER been able to enjoy all my favorite games at their maximum detail. It’s not just the eye candy, it’s also the fact I can have all the eye candy and play those games with up to quadruple the frame rates of my previous desktop without the PC whining like its about to be launched off an aircraft carrier.
NEGATIVES
The negatives are few. One is the choice of only average Western Digital SSD’s. The SN560’s return only average performance for a Gen4 drive. Not to mention that while Asus touts 2TB of storage (technically they are correct), it divided into two 1TB drives. Not ideal in my world. I swapped the 1TB storage drive to a 2TB Western Digital SN850X, leaving one of the SN560’s as my primary boot drive. Placing all my games on the SN850, made a substantial difference in loading times and responsiveness. Throughput went from approx. 5000 MB/s to well over 7000 MB/s.
That’s really all the faults I can find. That’s impressive, as this is one of the few pre-builts I have nothing to complain about regarding the ton of bloatware installed. There is some proprietary Asus software that comes with the machine, like Armory Crate, etc., but it isn’t extreme and doesn’t hinder performance or boot times.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The new Asus ROG Strix is an awesome gaming rig. The entire PC feels like it was thoroughly and thoughtfully designed from the beginning, unlike my previous gaming PC. This is one of the few computers I’ve received that I didn’t feel the desire or need to upgrade parts to make it perform at its intended potential. Yes, I did swap game drives, but that was for my own OCD, allowing me to store all my current and future games in one spot. But, in reality, this desktop needs nothing to make it great.
Everything works and performs exceptionally well out of the box. And, unlike some of Asus’ competitors, they make it user friendly for those of us that may want to upgrade in the future. Asus used standardized parts, power supply, and case dimensions, etc. Asus even threw in extra power cables to add additional PCIe expansion cards, SSD’s etc. The desktop is designed with the end-user in mind, allowing them to customize it to their wants and needs.
Well done Asus. This is an outstanding desktop!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
