I bought this as an open box from my local Best Buy. They were also using it as a display unit so yes, I took a chance with it. Anyway, I'm quite happy with my purchase.
Pros
1. Big, very colorful screen. Asus managed to fit an 18 inch screen into a laptop chassis designed for 17 inch laptops. It displays up to 500 nits (although I don't think it's getting quite that bright). The 100% SRGB and DCI-P3 color space (and high Adobe RGB) ratings mean the screen is definitely good enough for creative work and colors pop really well without being over saturated. It's accurate, which is super nice to have in a laptop that you both work and play on.
2. i9 and 4080 go brr. Fast performance, no hiccups, stuttering, or frame drops in the games I play.
3. I love Asus keyboards and this feels like an Asus keyboard. There's good travel and feedback with excellent key spacing. The per key RGB is nice and configurable in Aura Creator, which works better now than it did on my prior laptop. In short, they're colorful, customizable, and very comfortable (for me at least). One of the best laptop keyboards in the game and I can use it for hours at a time.
4. Good port selection. Two USB C and two USB A is manageable. Nice to see Ethernet considering some laptop OEMs don't have it anymore. WiFi 6E is nice to have as well.
5. Decent cooling. I'd still recommend a laptop cooler and maybe an undervolt for the i9 to keep things consistent during very heavy work or game loads, but even without it, Ilthe laptop runs pretty well. It'll idle in the mid 40C range, which is great for an i9 laptop. It can get toasty under load, but again, not unusual for an i9. Usually around 85C with spikes into the 90C range, which is, again, normal.
6. The all gray chassis is nice. It's definitely gamer-y, but it's not ridiculous or ostentatious. Keyboard deck feels smooth, but does collect fingerprints easily. There is some keyboard flex, but it's normal for a 17/18-inch laptop.
7. Build quality is all around good. No issues there.
8. I took the bottom cover off and added a 2TB SSD and 32GB of RAM. The internals are easy to clean (the fans come off with three screws each and aren't attached directly to the heat pipes so they're easy to remove and clean), and also easy to work with and upgrade.
9. SSD doesn't overheat or throttle under load, so airflow inside the laptop is well designed and Asus' choice for its stock SSD is good.
10. The hinge actually feels very solid. This thing was on display for 4 months before I bought it, and the hinges still feel sturdy without feeling stiff. That's a good sign that they'll last awhile.
11. The BIOS isn't locked down tighter than a MacBook and still lets you do things like undervolt the CPU for some extra thermal overhead. Most laptop OEMs allow for this, but some don't (and aren't required to), so I appreciate any OEM that lets me do it.
Cons
1. I do have some IPS glow (NOT light bleed, I know the difference) in the top and bottom left corners. Likely why the prior owner returned it. It's only noticeable sometimes and it's not bad enough to where I can't handle it.
2. The track pad is wonderful, but the clicks feel very mushy. This may be from it being on display for as long as it was and people messing with it. I may contact Asus to see if I can get it repaired since it's still under warranty for 8 months.
3. While the port selection is great, the port placement is funky. Everything is on the left and right sides (including power cable, HDMI, and Ethernet) with no ports in the back. The back is strictly for airflow, which I love, but it does make the ports a little cluttered. I'll get used to it.
4. The screen contrast is just average at 1000:1. This results in some stuff looking a bit dull, especially darker content. It's not bad on the face of it as the vast majority of IPS displays have that rating, but if Lenovo can do 1200:1 and Acer can do 1400:1 on comparably priced (or cheaper, in Lenovo's case with the Legion 5 Pro), then I think Asus can up its game here, especially for a laptop that MSRPs well over $2000.
Neutral points
1. The speakers are just okay. They are laptop speakers. They're not the worst I've heard but not the best either.
2. When set to eco mode, the battery life is not great. 4-6 hours if I'm doing light stuff and about 1-2 hours if I'm doing heavy stuff like gaming or video editing. Expected for a gaming laptop, so no points off, but worth mentioning.
Overall, I feel like this was a great purchase. I have a laptop that does everything I need with plenty of overhead to grow. The 4080 sits in a good spot between pride and power compared to the 4090 (which, in laptops ONLY, is only about 10% better) and the 4070 (which is way too expensive). The screen, keyboard, and comfort levels are great. The track pad is great but mine probably needs serviced.
Most everything else is fine, average, or expected. One star off for the IPS glow and aversgr screen contrast at over $2000. Everything else about this laptop is very good and I'm happy with my purchase..

So I'm coming from a 3070 TI Asus laptop...And I must say this next year model is amazing!!! I broke my old laptop so had to upgrade and the" screen is perfect for gaming! 4070 is great, only regret is not spending extra $200 to get the 4080 model when it was in stock

Great PC, Windows 11 sucks amd all the AI ADOBE crap will slow it down. Same for Windows one drive. Really good PC though but kinda of flashy with the lights. I just need a lit keyboard not a disco ball. Could use a SD card slot amd another USB. Still an awesome lap top.

Just got this machine and it is fantastic! I tried to upgrade to a 2TB Drive but the Geek Squad said they couldn't get the one I purchased to work. They tried a similar SSD and it did not work as well.

Also had bad back bleed. If you try to explain the situation to BestBuy they will think your delusional, and will say they are meant to look like that. I have had to purchase this model about 9 times and they started to give me a really hard time returning with the issue of bad backbleed.
If you buy this New and think you can return to Bestbuy with the issue of being defective they will say no this laptop is 100% perfect no return.

Office computer claims to play games too

Claims to be very high performance and does not deliver. Loads slowly and often freezes while loading programs. Cannot play 10 year old games on an external monitor without huge framerate drop, nearly unplayable without turning off vsync and using lowest graphic settings. Fan sounds like a drone taking off when playing games. My Rog laptop from 2015 with a 970 graphics card plays games better than this. Forces use of garbage integrated graphics rather than dedicated gpu unless you are using basic built in display. Very disappointing as my last Rog laptop lasted 10 years, still running today but I finally decided to "upgrade".
