    'Smart' router causes network instability

Check elsewhere on the web (besides bestbuy reviews) for others' experiences. The connectivity is terrible right out of the box. Even with QoS turned off, the router still tries to be 'smart' and prioritize network traffic. This has caused our home network to become completely unusable. This router has numerous special features like VPN and USB network drive. The more you customize the settings the more and more unusable it becomes.

Let me just start off by saying the specs of this router are amazing. And thats exactly it for the pros of this router because lets just say this might be the worst functionality router ever. If you use and of the ai mesh it will outmatically brick your router and constantly put it into a reset loop and youll have to factory reset to get it to work again, alot of the features and bugs hopefully will get fixed as its new but as of right now its not even functionable for everyday use. And not to mention it resets every 30 to 45 minutes.

      Dear Denice,

      Thank you for your comment.

We do understand your disappointment with this router and the inconvenience this may have caused if it needs to be factory reset constantly. To resolve this issue, check if the router's settings matches with your ISP's modem security credentials. If this router is running with an older firmware version, try updating it to the most current version posted at:  https://rog.asus.com/networking/rog-strix-gs-be18000/helpdesk_bios/ . If it resets or reboot every 30 to 45 minutes, check the power connection and try connecting it to another known good power outlet or AC source. Additionally, ensure this router was placed in a well ventilated location to prevent overheating that can cause an auto-reboot. Should you need further assistance with this product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

The ASUS ROG Strix has been a great addition to my home network. It provides a stable internet connection weather it may be wired or wireless. The RGB lighting has to be one of the best things that stands out the most, since most other routers are boring. Additionally, just the one router is perfect for a home of up to 3,000 square feet. The installation was very simple with the ASUS Router app. The router seems it may be customizable however I went with the simple set up as a new router. The router is nice and compact the image and the box can be a little deceiving, but it is not that bid. The RGB lighting can be modified with the phone app. Although I would like to add that it does feel very plasticky if you know what I am trying to say. It seems to be somewhat weak, does not feel like a tank, in fact it is very light in weight that i do wish it had a little more wight to it. Overall rating it seems to be a dependable router that is simple to set up and looks nice. I would recommend to anyone who is looking to add a new router with WiFi 7.

Asus did a great job of putting a powerhouse of a router in a compact, stylish package. The router has a clean design that mirrors the looks of a small gaming PC. There are no ugly, weird antennas protruding and the logo is large RGB lighting that can be easily changed in the router application. The unit has a plenty of venting to reduce heat build-up and the seven 2.5G LAN ports provide more than enough connections for all your wired devices. Setup is easy and can all be done from Asus router application. You can manually setup or scan the barcode and it sets itself up with the default settings. I highly recommend changing the default Admin, SSID name and passwords for security. There is an option to separate the 2.4, 5 and 6Hz frequencies or you can set it to load balance on all channels. The AiProtection security works great and notifies you of any vulnerabilities in the configuration and there are not subscription charges for this feature and the Parental control features. Dedicated connections can be setup for specific devices and games to give the best and fastest connection. The dedicated IoT is a great feature and allows you to set to 2.4 or 5Hz bands for older legacy devices. I have 20+ devices connected and have had no connection or speed issues. I'm getting the full upload and download speeds provided by my ICP service provider. The advanced features, Wi-Fi 7 and easy of configuration make this a great choice for gamers and heavy internet users. The added benefit is that you can also control the router through an internet web interface on your PC as well. You can also mesh multiple routers together, but this powerful unit will be all that is need for most user setups.

    Build - and optimize - a multi-gig network

Overall, I'm very pleased with this ASUS router - In full transparency, I've been a fan overall of ASUS routers for a number of years, basing my home network around their advanced routing capabilities and forward thinking design. This router brings all of that to a fairly compact package and is an excellent place to base your upgrade to multi-gig wired AND wireless around. First off, let's start with the capabilities. You get a TON of options for connectivity, including 8 (yes 8) 2.5G wired port - at least one of which will be the WAN port to connect to your source of internet (either a cable/DSL modem or fiber gateway). That leaves 7 wired ports for all sorts of devices, all at 2.5G!!! So 2.5x faster than gigabit (if your computer can support the higher speed - they do also support gigabit and 100/10 if you have a slower device on the other end of the cable). You get tri-band wifi (2.4Ghz, 5Ghz and 6Ghz) with the ability to either merge them and let the device / router negotiate what to use OR to segregate and split your devices manually. I usually go with network segregation so I can optimize the use of the higher bandwidth networks manually and that was easy to set up here (though this router does have the usual ASUS quirk where you have to reboot the router after major changes to get them to take effect even though nothing TELLs you that, it's easy once you figure it out). Out of the box you get 2 dedicated wired gaming ports and a dedicated gaming network that is optimized with open NAT and special settings for low latency / high performance online gaming which is super helpful if that's a priority for you. Overall I was up and running quickly and the router has been VERY stable since the initial setup. Performance has been solid and I'm seeing up to the rated throughput on both the wired and wireless networks with good wireless range and performance even though this box has all the antennas contained within it instead of external like some competing products (even some from ASUS). I actually prefer the INTERNAL antennas as it gives this install a cleaner look. Perhaps the only think I'm a bit less than pleased about is the lightweight / plastic-y construction of the router box itself. While the router will generally sit on a shelf somewhere (or under a shelf somewhere) and not be moved so it should be fine from a durability perspective, it's a bit at odds with the high end nature of the device to be very light / made of such inexpensive feeling materials. It doesn't impact the functionality at all and the router works fine, so I didn't deduct a star from the rating for it, but something to think about for the future. Then again, lightweight can sometimes be an advantage, so you might be ok with it. All in all, this is a top notch router from a company that's been producing gaming and networking gear for many years and has the formula down pat. So if you're looking for a router that you can truly set and forget, knowing that your network will be stable - and HIGH performance - for years to come, this is the one to get!.

FINALLY! I have done it. I have acquired a gaming router that is actually set up for a highly intense household full of internet-connected items and people who like to game, stream, and use the internet all at once! We at last have a router that can handle our upgraded 2.5Gbps that we pay good coin for and that can distribute these speeds consistently and intelligently across our whole household! What is crazy about this router, among many things, is that it is so robust and powerful that it has a quad-core 2.0GHz CPU in it! This crazy router has as powerful a CPU as my first gaming laptop in 2015, haha!! To compound my happiness, it really is set up for connection with devices for the next 5 plus years to my reckoning, given that it is full triband (2.4ghz, 5.0ghz, and 6.0ghz) and that it has so many LAN ports and connectivity tricks up its sleeve to keep our house running for the long haul. We legitimately have 30-plus devices connected to wifi. We are a government spying conspiracy theorist’s worst nightmare. We have Echo Dots, smart bulbs, smart picture frames, a smart thermostat, laptops, desktops, cellphones, tablets, gaming consoles, TVs, projectors, Fire TV Sticks, Apple TV, security cameras, and even our baby monitor is hooked up to wifi! As such, security and reliability are my top priorities, and this monitor gives me extreme confidence in that regard. As I have read that there are a fair number of glitches with some of the features right now, I have this set up and am using it very basically right now with all of my devices hooked up. But I am excited for the possibility of playing with more of the AI enhancement features and such later on as this router gets through its growing pains! Altogether, this is a 5 out of 5 star wifi router. Beyond a mesh system with multiple routers or “nodes”, I just don’t think you are going to go much more top of the line or as wide based on coverage of even very large homes in the 2500-3500 square feet realm than with this router!

I've owned and upgraded one ASUS gaming router I have with this one and it certainly outperforms my old router in a few areas but there are some things I wish ASUS would address on such a high-end device as it's now in the range of professional level network hardware. What's great: Speed - Wifi 7 and 6ghz with AFC (though there are caveats with AFC) I have been able to get near 2.5g transfer speeds near the router without any issues RGB - always welcomed but not essential if this is going in a "home network closet" 2.5gb Ethernet Ports Multi-wan with mobile tethering support (this is awesome!) Smart Home Master for network segmentation (this is awesome and makes it easy to do this!) Ethernet backhaul for network extension (though this is also an area where this router could be better!) OpenNAT updates - this is pretty cool when you have a ASUS ROG Handheld or supported device and it works great Updates/support is great - Asus has clearly been addressing firmware issues where this is a new tech, I can't say the same about every other router vendor Internal antennas What could be better: -The power brick being a wall plug - it's huge and a pain to deal with -No 10g SFP uplink/downlink ports for WAN and LAN Wired backhaul to connect to other APs - Again, many high-end routers have this ... even the older ASUS RT-BE88U does and yet this one doesn't? -No Tailscale support -File sharing is SLOW with the USB port even with a SSD (USB 3.0 limitation I suppose) - why not add dual NVME sots for storage? -No docker support for apps (like Tailscale - if it cannot be supported natively why not support Docker for power users like me who wish to expand/push capabilities of the hardware) Don't get me wrong, while there are some things I'd love to see ASUS add, I think this router is good and I'd recommend it. Especially if you're a gamer and you want something you can just plug and play and expect to get going with little tech knowledge/experience. It has plenty of speed and features that are easy to configure and do help you get the best performance for games where every bit of latency and speed matters. The dedicated gaming ports are awesome, similarly just plug it in and it works with no configuration to get the best performance on those ports. The only reason I moved my rating down is the comparison to the older RT-BE88U and comparison to other higher end router/firewall appliances in a comparable range.. the RT-BE88U seemly offers many of the same features and performance comparable to this one (minus a few new things such as the latest Wifi 7 features, internal antennas, and, AFC (which has it's limitations right now) and all 8 ports being 2.5gb along with a few other small feature differences). As a side note, I recently switched my ASUS router to just be an AP as it does perform SOLID as an access point and I still love ASUS routers/AP's as they tend to perform better than other brands. I ended up going the route of a dedicated router/firewall appliance running OPNSense and haven't looked back. The network has been far more stable and outperforms much of the off-the shelf networking gear, especially over ethernet. I had high hopes that maybe ASUS with this router would have made something to compete with that and perhaps start to offer some of the features that the enthusiasts who want the most out of their network gear actually use.

I've always used regular routers for my home. I never really thought much of gaming routers, but man has my opinion changed on these. The ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band gaming router has really brought my home's wifi to a completely different level. The only thing that I found troubling out of the box was the immediate software update requirement. It took some figuring out to get all of the features up and running. Once the software update was done, I was able to explore the MANY advanced feature the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band router has to offer. From gaming mode, to the security features, the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band router has it all. Many homes my not have anywhere near the internet speeds that this router is capable of handling, but even for 1gig wifi speeds, this router performs incredibly well. You also have the ability to choose the device you want to prioritize, so you can have the best internet speed/signal all for yourself. As for looks, it's nothing special, but I like the simplicity of the design. Another thing that I really love about the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band router is that it has so many ethernet ports for hardwired connections. I hate it when routers only have two, or even one, etherenet port. I would definitely recommend the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band router.

As a gamer, having the top speeds, low latency, is absolutely necessary. Not too bad to have fast speeds when streaming via multiple devices in the house, either. With that said, I was excited to test out the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 Tri-Band Wi-Fi 7 Gaming Router, and after using it for about a week, I can strongly say it's a great router...once it's setup. I've read a couple reviews regarding this router as I was wondering if others were having the same issues I was. My previous mesh system is ASUS as well, and I had issues connecting that with my Spectrum internet service. It wasn't plug and play at all. Router, adjustments, resets, disconnect, reconnect...even a call to Spectrum...I can't exactly tell you what the magic button was to get this router to work with my service...but it took time. Once it did work however...sky was the limit! To be fair, my previous mesh system has been giving me pretty solid results, so I'm accustom to getting solid speeds...however, disconnecting the other system and opting to go with the ASUS - ROG Strix GS-BE18000 dropped my latency by 50% on average, while still getting similar speeds at distance. This may have been just from converting from a mesh system...but I was able to do this while still keeping my speeds across my 2 bedroom house, which for me is a big enough win. Maybe my setup issues were due to me using Spectrum internet...still, for that alone I have to deduct 1 point from an overall rockstar router which I would strongly recommend. Even those who come across the setup hiccups I did would still find it worth it once connected.

Wireless routers are getting more and more powerful and this is no exception. It's touted as one of ASUS's gaming routers, although unfortunately it's missing some of their gaming features. To start: Packaging is straightforward, even minimalist for a router of this size. No additional antennas to attach, just comes with the router itself, power and an RJ45 network cable, not much to it and that's just fine by me. Setup: If you're used to the setup of the recently cloud-controlled devices that prevent most direct access, this is going to be a bit different for you. The best way to manage this is through the management web page which will give you access to all of the basic and more advanced features. To just get "up and running" it's pretty easy, but when you start turning on additional features, such as AFC and some of the gaming features, that's where some of the complication comes in (and some unfortunate disappointment, though I do understand ASUS's need to segment the market with higher end features on some routers and not others). Advanced Setup: This router has the capability (now, with a firmware update) of AFC, what that does is allows the router to use extra power on the 6GHz radio provided your locale allows it, and that's where complication comes in. The router uses attached devices such as your cell phone to determine where it is installed, as IP location isn't good enough to determine that. If your local laws/codes allow for higher power 6GHz radio capabilities, then the router will enable it, which may give you increased range even over the 5GHz radio, the problem is, with the local requirements being a need, it's not the most straightforward feature for these companies to implement. Fortunately where I am, I was able to turn it on and see the benefit, although I really only have 3 devices in my home that use the 6GHz radio (2 phones and a new laptop). This AFC function is technically usable on both WIFI 6E and WIFI 7 as those are the two current standards that support 6GHz. It might be worth turning on, though it will be very dependent on where you live. As to the gaming features. The router has 2 'game ports' which allows for low latency cut-through routing of the traffic from that port, but it does not have ASUS's game radar or private game network as some of their higher end models do, it's a bummer, but again, depending on the price point, somewhat expected. In general, performance from the router is good, all ports support 2.5gig connectivity, though it is missing 10g connectivity that some of the newest routers come with. Wireless connectivity is good, range is good, and it has the ability to segment your SSIDs into gaming, IOT, etc. I will say that the NAS capability is a little bit slow, even with an attached SSD, but I dont tend to use that feature much as I have a server for my media. Overall: As a gaming router it's decent, but not the highest end, there are definitely some performance caveats that may be important to you depending on your needs (private gaming network, 10 gig ethernet, game radar, better NAS performance) but it's still a good entry to the market if you're in the need of the more advanced features beyond the cloud-controlled devices without completely breaking the bank.
