Portable Gaming Laptop With a Gorgeous Display

I’ve been using the ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop for a couple months now and I’m impressed by its portability and beautiful display. The 14-inch size makes it easy to slip into my bag and game on the go. It weighs just 3.64 lbs which is incredibly light for a gaming laptop. The clean design doesn’t scream “gaming rig” either. The fast QHD display is the highlight for me. The resolution makes games look sharp and vivid. Animations appear extremely smooth thanks to the blazing 165Hz refresh rate. It’s a gorgeous panel that makes both games and media pop. In terms of gaming performance, the RTX 4060 GPU can handle medium to high settings in demanding titles. I have to dial back maximum settings a bit, but gameplay is still smooth with good frame rates. The AMD processor zips through daily multitasking and app loading as well. Charging over USB-C is convenient when traveling since I can use a shared charger for both laptop and phone. The speakers pump out robust audio with Dolby Atmos support too. There are more powerful gaming laptops out there, but the G14's portable design, brilliant display, and capable mid-range performance make it a great choice for gamers on the go. The premium feel and generous connectivity like WiFi 6E round out the experience. If you want a gorgeous screen for gaming and media in a lightweight package, the ROG Zephyrus G14 is easily recommended.

This is for the 2023 Zephyrus G14 Ryzen 9 + 4060. First off ascetically, its gorgeous!, nice matte feel, fingerprints wont be an issue. We will see how the white holds up. The processor is more than capable to handle just about anything you throw at it, dGPU has enough horsepower to play most games comfortably. Screen is BEAUTIFUL. Real nice color and contrast and comfortable brightness. It is a laptop so it does get a little hot after extended gaming but its not as hot as previous generations. GPU puts off more heat than the Ryzen 9. Now for some cons, I received the 512 WD NVMe which does get over 5GBs read/3.8GBs sequential speeds, I have seen that some people get a Samsung version but seems to be the same speeds, but there is only 1 NVMe slot so if you need space plan ahead, I did replace with a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro. The base 16GB DDR5 is soldered to the board, but there is one empty slot where you could add another stick. I added a 16GB stick of Crucial which worked fine. Lastly, I did replace the Wi-Fi card with an AX210 which was an easy drop-in replacement. Lastly, Asus Armory Crate.... uninstall and install G-Helper for a much better lightweight experience that will improve temps out of the box. All-in-all Asus knocks it out of the ballpark again.

Amazing Power in a Portable Package

Amazing power in a sleek package. First impression with the packaging was wow. ASUS really put some thought into the presentation and the experience of unboxing this laptop. The box was longer than I was expecting and I was trying to figure out how they packaged it. When I opened the lid, they had designed it so the laptop elevates out of the box at an angle. I could already tell this was going to be a great experience and I hadn’t even turned it on. Next I took the laptop out of the box and set it on the table. I did have to charge it before I could use it. So I left it plugged in for a few hours before I began the initial setup. When I opened the lid on the laptop for the first time again ASUS surprised me. As I opened the lid, the base of the laptop where the keyboard is, raised up also slightly off the table. The more I opened the lid, the larger the angle became. They really thought about the ergonomics of this. I am thoroughly impressed and i have not even signed on yet. Next I went through the routine set up screens and software updates. This took about 30 min in total. Do not skip any steps, it is really important to be sure everything is up to date. I liked that this has face recognition in addition to a pin lock. So I can just open the lid and look at the camera and it recognizes me and logs me in. Love this. The keyboard is great to type on. The keys are well spaced. I like that the volume keys have been moved up and to the left out of the function row. The trackpad is super responsive and has a nice feel to it. The power plug has an L shape to it, probably to help it stay connected but it could cover up the HDMI port if you are not paying attention. So that is a little odd to me about the placement of the port in addition to the shape of the power cable connection. Now that the software is all up to date let's get gaming. Screen size is good, I enjoy being able to take this on the go but when home I still plug in to an external display for a 2nd monitor. Mostly I have been playing fortnite and it is a joy to play on this laptop. The images are crisp and clean on the display and the keys are super responsive. I really like the portable size of this powerhouse. My last laptop was huge and I did not enjoy lugging it around. This is a joy and I know it can handle whatever I throw at it. My only issue is when I use it on my lap the lid has a bit of an edge that digs into my legs. I like how it tilts the behaviors but that creates an issue when on my lap. Not so comfortable.

One of the best window laptop i have used so far. (1) It looks just simply gorgeus, which is hard to find in windows laptop (2) The trackpad is the best trackpad i have seen so far on windows, same as Macbook Pros (3) Performance is very solid. I love the fact I can tune the performance based on my need. When just casual browsing on battery, eco mode for long battery time. USB c will power the battery. However, to get the best performance, plug in . I get over 100 FPS on Forza 5 (4) Plenty amount of ports (5) Keyboard is good, i put a keyboard cover due to it being white and easy to catch marks (6) Extremely upgradable within 5 mins. I put a 16gb ram making it 32GB total and a 2TB Samsung Pro M.2 both cost less than $150 (7) I had an issue in the begining when right after opening the lid, the laptop wont turn on , even with pressing with the power button. Upon reading reddit, turning off Armory Crate AI hibernation totally solved the problem. (8) Screen is really nice, 2K with really high brightness. Very thin bezel too. (9) I got it at the perfect time when Best Buy had a $200 discount, making it a no brainer. In a nutshell, this is one of the best portable gaming laptop i have bought that is not bulky, really nice looking and can be tuned at times to meet demands.

Amazing laptop minus there being fan noise on the right fan to the right of the track pad. I've been able to run most games that I play at high settings at 1440p and at 120-144hz for the refresh rate. I upgraded the SSD to a 1tb and added another 16gb of ram. It's portable and light but can do anything I need while being mobile.

Amazing laptop, beautiful screen, fast RTX 4060 with a 7940HS CPU in a small form factor. Crazy how they can fix all this performance in a 14 inch laptop. Can be used to travel around due to it's light weight size. Can game high demand games with no problem. Pricey but well worth the performance.

I honestly got this computer mostly so I can play Sims 4. I didn't think I would be able to find a gaming laptop that could actually run a game like this, but it works great! My computer never overheats, and the display quality is amazing. I have been playing nonstop on this computer every night for 2 weeks and I haven't had any issues with playing the games I want to. I recommend this computer to anyone who has a lower budget, but still wants an amazing gaming laptop.

Great laptop. I use it to code at school and play games in between classes. Battery life is great for a gaming laptop as well, around 6-7 hours when doing school work. The 4060 is great for a lot of new games on med-high settings. Older games you can use ultra settings of course. The form factor is the best part. Most gaming laptops are too big to lug around daily. I will say and dock 1 star for the laptop refusing to turn on. It has only happened once, but it will start to boot up and then shut back down. To remedy this I held the power buttons for 10 seconds, then pressed it again. After that it fully booted. Not sure what the cause was but it was annoying to deal with in the middle of class trying to take notes.

ASUS and their Republic of Gamers (ROG) line of gaming PCs continue a good run, including this model the Zephyrus G14. A few years ago, I acquired a ROG Flow and have been using it nonstop since. The Zephyrus G14 is a fairly compact white/crème laptop with a bit of a prism on the outside so you can signal other ships (they actually did that back last century) by tilting in light. As I unboxed this wolf in sheep’s clothing ASUS packaged it, so it gradually raised out of the box and announced itself to its new owner, quite an entrance. The Zephyrus is packed with hot (more about that later) technology including a AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS CPU, NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU w/8GB of DDR6 memory, 16GB of DDR5 4800mhz RAM (more about that later), a matte 14" QHD (16:10) 165Hz Display screen which is more than serviceable and a fast 512GB SSD - PCIe Gen4 (more about that later) all with Windows 11 home. Ergonomically the Zephyrus feels good and is light (3.64lbs) for the punch it packs with vents throughout to cool this beast. When opening up the screen the hinge elevates laptop a bit and it assists with cooling. A supple backlit keyboard and large trackpad are featured here as well as dedicated volume up, volume down, mute, power and a button to invoke the Armoury Crate software. Armoury Crate is ASUS’ software which provides you with deep insight and tuning abilities primarily with a CPU and GPU focus. Several preset modes are provided to keep all the performance related black magic behind the scenes. Performance profiles include Windows, Silent, Performance, Turbo (AC Powered only) and a Manual preset. Be aware some of the enhanced performance modes overclock the CPU/GPU and can really raise the temperature and get those cooling fans working. I will avoid diving too deeply into gaming performance, I only play a few games, but those I do play including ACE Combat 7 looked silky smooth with no dropped frames or glitches. I was going to load MS Flight Simulator (more about that later – disk space) but did not. As for my other passion, creating content – including moderately advanced video editing, it handles those tasks well. As for creating content, I recently moved from one video editor (PowerDirector) to Davinci Resolve Studio (DR). This may be a performance laptop targeting gamers, however since video stresses some of the same computing components as gaming, the Zephyrus G14 performs well. Specifically, when editing video it does not struggle with live previews, timeline refreshes, special effects or processor or GPU intensive activities. DR renders video on the Zephyrus G14 about 50% quicker than my previous ROG Flow which had similar specs, this is where a better GPU, the NVIDIA RTX 4060 GPU with 8GB of memory comes into play. Especially since DR utilizes a GPU heavily. I have heard people mention an ethernet port is absent and they have to rely on Wi-Fi connectivity, This is not an issue for me as I already use a dock which I can plug into either the USB-C 4.0 powered port or the USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port with DisplayPort provided on the Zephyrus to drive additional monitors or utilize a gigabit ethernet connection which is a feature on my expansion dock. Now the not so good, this particular model only comes with a 512GB Solid State Drive which after installing software and additional games proves to be barely adequate. Also, only 16GB of DDR5 4800Mhz system memory is permanently installed on the system, you can install another 16GB in the slot reserved for additional memory however it does provide you less flexibility for upgrades (I’d like the ability to replace all the memory with larger capacity SODIMMs). But at least this is an improvement over my ROG Flow since there was no RAM upgrade path on that system. Overall, this system performs well for gaming or content creation, the appearance is unique, components are high spec and perform well. As a sidenote, I soon ordered from Bestbuy another 16GB of RAM and replaced the paltry 512GB SSD with a 4TB capacity SSD. I also had to contact tech support for an issue that turned out to something not related to this unit, they were responsive during our online chat session. Pros: - Compact notebook, right sized medium form factor - Performance oriented, blazing quick CPU and GPU - Ports that make sense, including an HDMI and two different and unique USB-C ports/ - 240 watt power supply - Matte screen - IR Camera built in, provides you the ability to leverage facial recognition for biometric based logins with Windows Hello. Cons: - Given this is a gaming laptop, a larger capacity SSD and more RAM is needed right out of the box for even better performance. - High Performance means high heat, and both the CPU and GPU reach >90 Celsius under peak performance. You can feel the heat come through the keyboard and right above the top row of keys. - Battery is adequate and lasted about 3 hours, but many of the performance features drastically throttle down when the laptop is on battery power.

To start, the 512GB SSD is far too small for any real game installs, so I'd recommend upgrading to a larger drive depending on your use-case scenario. I moved from a gaming desktop to this laptop for the portability. This laptop is a powerhouse though. I coupled it with a powered dock to run on a 34" ultrawide with a vertical 24", and this laptop just runs it like a champ. Startup times are fast (I upgraded to 32GB ram by adding 16GB stick). It's been able to run Starfield, Phasmophobia, Division 2, Sims 4, and a host of other games flawlessly. The 4060 is just a little powerhouse that takes (so far) nearly anything I've thrown at it. The display and its refresh rate are more than I expected from a built-in, and playing games or watching media on the go are enjoyable.

This is a power-packed machine which can be used for daily office work and gaming! It it quite amazing how much power it can churn out despite its lightweight! The screen is beautiful, not OLED but its pretty good. The AMD processor is more than adequate for your daily needs and the best part is that it is better than its competitor in terms of power management and the laptop can last more than 6-7 hours each time if you are not gaming on it! The keys have a very good tactile feel and the backlight makes it a joy to type on this keyboard. The touchpad is amazingly smooth and my fingers just glide over the touchpad effortlessly. Overall, I had a good experience in buying the new laptop from Best Buy - Marina CA. They were efficient and made shopping so easy for me!

Enjoying my new laptop. I upgraded from an ASUS Q524UQ that i bought in 2015 finally. I enjoyed 9 years with my last ASUS, which was still working just fine. I am enjoying the faster start up time, games playing better, and the smaller laptop vs my old one. Overheating looks like it could be an issue for some, I already had a chilling pad with 5 fans for my work laptop, this ASUS did get really hot the first time i used it without the chilling pad, but i had it connected to a monitor, lid was closed, and it was on a keyboard drawer on my desk. I have not tried using it without the chill pad again to find out what exactly caused it to heat up so much.

Amazing screen, great aesthetics, horrible stability. I really dig the design of this, compact, sleek, looks good. Had it for a week and returned it. Constantly crashing (at least once an hour) playing helldivers 2. Drivers were up-to-date, 3 clean windows installs, ghelper app (armory crate would causes crash just browsing). Thing runs hot, I was at one point, running the game at it's lowest setting and keeping the temps at bay but it still crashed. Crashed in other games too so I gave up. Not worth the headache. This sat on a laptop cooling pad too. My 6 yr old dell that it was supposed to replace doesn't crash. I've built most of my desktops with ASUS products and that's not likely to change, but their laptops need better QC. Doing factory resets was pretty easy to do. Cloud installs is a blessing. keyboard was okie, the trackpad is huge and kinda weird to find the right click. if you get a stable build, totally worth it when it's on sale. But counting on a build lottery is iffy for a 1.5k laptop (msrp)

I have a 4090 PC with sim rig. I wanted a portable gaming solution when away from home. I compared all the handheld PC’s vs. all the gaming laptops before scoring this G14 as an open box item. This is a 4060 PC in a compact laptop design. You have to know what you’re getting into with these gaming laptops before you buy. You can only get the maximum turbo settings when the laptop is plugged in. On battery, you can only select “Performance” mode which is still very good, but has significantly less FPS than Turbo. Example: plugged in on Turbo I can run many games on ultra settings with a locked 165 FPS. On battery, the FPS drops by 30-40 so you should be running some sort of upscaler like DLSS, FSR, or even Lossless Scaling on Steam to help make up the loss of FPS. When gaming on BATTERY, your battery life will be entirely dependent on the brightness of your screen and performance settings. You’ll be lucky to get 1 to 1.5 hours of hard core gaming on battery, so keep that in mind. It’s not a handheld PC like ROG Ally X with tons of battery life. It’s simple math. This laptop has a max TGP of 125W, versus handheld PC max of maybe 30W. The included ROG Armory Crate software really makes managing the performance modes easy. You can set profiles for gaming and productivity. I’ve been very impressed. What I reallly like is when I’m not gaming, I can set the laptop to “Silent” power mode and the battery life lasts nearly as long as my kid’s MacBooks. I highly recommend this laptop to hardcore gamers that want a portable solution but don’t mind being plugged in to get it. Think of it as a highly mobile 4060 desktop and you’ll be in gaming bliss like me when I’m away from home. ROCK AND STONE!!

I bought the 2023 g14 open box and on sale (<$900). For that price, it is an excellent machine. If you're considering the 4050 model, just don't. Wait for this to go on sale instead. The 7940hs CPU is fast, great for battery life (anywhere from 6-10 hours depending on use), and can manage just about anything non-professional you'd need to do with a laptop. A laptop 4060 is nearly equivalent to a desktop 4060, so this computer could theoretically serve as an entry-level desktop replacement, but you will notice that entry-level status if you want to play anything more than 1440p. I stick to that resolution on my external monitor or the laptop screen, and this machine can run Cyberpunk at 60fps, Elden Ring, you name it. The screen is among the best IPS panels you can find: bright, colorful, and high refresh rate. That said, I've been spoiled by OLEDs and this does miss out on contrast and black on this screen look like dark gray. Speakers are quite good, but not on the same level as a Macbook or the 2024 g14. The camera is technically 1080p, but it is almost unusable in dimmer lighting, looks so grainy you're hardly recognizable. Again, a Mac is the cream of the crop here, not really sure if any Windows laptops have something that comes close. Keyboard is a treat to type on, though the backlight is distracting on the white keys and only usable at night. My trackpad was indented in one corner, meaning it made a fairly annoying clicking noise when navigating with the trackpad. That's the risk you take with an open box, I'm going to return and hopefully get one without that defect. That said, doing my research, it seems to be a pretty common flaw in g14s every year. The WiFi card in this thing is kinda terrible, frequent disconnects and poor signal quality when compared to another device the same distance away from a router. Probably going to buy a $20 Intel card to replace it with the next one. Rather than pay to have it configured with more storage, buy yourself a bigger NVME and use Macrium Reflect to clone over the drive included with the device. Save yourself several hundred dollars and upgrade to what you need yourself. Google is your friend here. Overall, this laptop is well worth $1000. Would give it a 4.5/5 if I could, but the minor quality issues take a little off from an otherwise great machine.

The G14 will perfectly meet your needs if they align with what it provides. The CPU is absolutely solid for most workloads. Unless you're running Cyberpunk 2077 in Ultra settings (Why would you be doing that on a laptop?) you are pretty much set. 16GB is plenty of RAM to run Youtube, Netflix, Chrome(?), and 512 GB storage for me is a none issue since i need enough space for some apps and docs, while the bulk is on cloud, and if that is an issue, you can add in storage with a secondary m.2 or even external storage. Adding in more RAM would be an excellent plus but asking a laptop to be future proof is probably going extinct. Screen is crisp and beautiful, and i've rarely run out of battery. I ran Microsoft Office for about 5 hours before i even noticed my laptop was unplugged and still had about 30% battery left (although i haven't run anything on steam unplugged so beware but again, why would you attempt that?). Lastly the keyboard and built are extremely pleasing but some might prefer more (or even less) keystroke travel.

I would recommend this to a friend
