Almost totally fabulous--just slightly frustrating

This latest G14 fixes or improves on so many issues from the older variants that I almost had nothing to grouse about--but there are a few niggles you should be aware of going in. Unboxing was a bit underwhelming; there is no swag or handy laptop sleeve, no ethernet adapter or headphone/mic splitter--not even a sticker. That’s okay, it’s what’s on the inside that counts, right? In that respect...truly...the G14 does very VERY little to disappoint!
Construction feels solid & even slightly heavy--surprisingly so for a laptop this size; there is virtually no flex around the keyboard or trackpad. The trackpad is smooth & reassuringly taut; there is nothing cheap-feeling here! There are ports-a-plenty including microSD (I have a 1TB Sandisk card in mine that was recognized immediately), HDMI 2.1, 3.5mm combo headphone/mic jack, 2 USB-3.2 Gen 2 Type A, 1 USB-3.2 Gen 2 Type C w/DP, & 1 USB-4 Type C port w/DP & power delivery! The USB-4 port worked perfectly w/my Thunderbolt eGPU running either an external monitor or the G14's own panel. The chicklet keyboard feels pleasantly solid & is almost completely full-sized with just the 4 multimedia & arrow keys getting awkward half-height dimensions. Thankfully you can change the keyboard’s backlighting to something other than white (which made the keys virtually unreadable in bright light), though effects are limited to 1 color at a time--no per-key RGB.
Initial setup took <11 minutes from initial power-up to Win 11 desktop. Bloatware was minimal w/just a 1-month McAfee trial, 3-month Xbox Ultimate trial, & some ASUS-specific software incl. Armoury Crate (performance tuning/tweaks & system monitoring), Aura Creator (RGB effects—such as they are--for the keyboard as well as animated wallpapers & any other connected Aura Sync hardware), MyASUS (software, driver updates, & support hub), & Virtual Pet (animated screen buddy that can be used to set display or system status notifications while I wanders around the desktop). The Virtual Pet seemed better suited to those models featuring an AniMe Matrix LED display on the back of the screen (this G14 doesn’t have), but there might be an appetite for a little robot-monkey thing wandering around while you work & play.
Once all MyASUS, Armoury Crate, Windows app, & MS system updates were finished, operation was smooth & responsive with a full power-up from shut-down taking ~25 seconds. The G14 supports advanced Optimus switching which means you basically have two video cards to pick from via simple taskbar activation or NVIDIA control panel toggle--no need to restart or mess around in BIOS to choose between the iGPU or discrete RTX GPU- -you can even let the PC pick the appropriate GPU for you, automatically switching based on power/battery settings or whether you’re gaming or not…NICE! Integrated wireless performance was outstanding with the G14’s MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E adapter besting my desktop's AX210 6E performance (despite the latter’s larger antenna) for download speeds via 6Ghz @ 160Mhz channel width by at least 80-200 Mbps at the same distance; those of you w/very high-speed Internet & 6E router are going to love what operating in that segment of the Wi-Fi spectrum is going to do for you!
Much ado was made in ASUS' marketing about the ROG Nebula Display & it’s mostly got the goods to deliver on those promises. It’s got a more document/web-friendly 16:10 aspect ratio & a denser, more detailed QHD+ (1600p) picture than prior generations’ 16:9 1440p displays; & the mini-LED backlighting does a LOT to improve uniformity, contrast & PQ than some sloppier, edge-lit panels. No, you will not get inky blacks that come close to OLED, but colors are vivid & bright enough to cause eye strain if you want & off-angle performance is excellent per usual w/IPS displays. Gamers will love the low 3ms response time coupled w/a 165Hz refresh rate, & the native G-Sync makes gameplay deliciously, silky smooth.
Where I was more than a bit let down was how HDR was handled. Yes, you can *STREAM* HDR content & even get a reassuring note in Netflix for Dolby Vision, but the panel itself is NOT VESA DisplayHDR certified, meaning you cannot game or view desktop content in HDR. You MIGHT be able to hit somewhere near ASUS’ claimed 500 nits brightness during some part of a Dolby Vision stream; but in regular use, you’re probably going hit closer to 140-180 nits (based on my measurements) depending on your settings--still very bright & engaging, but also very disappointing once I realized HDR wasn’t available outside of streamed content. In fact, Windows doesn’t even recognize the panel’s 32bit/10-bpc color depth capabilities when the RTX card is selected—you have to make *that* change in NVIDIA control panel under Display>Change Resolution>Use NVIDIA Color Settings.
Speaking of color settings, Armoury Crate gives you a selection of color profiles, many supposedly tuned for specific game genres (RTS, FPS, etc.), content (cinema, photos of scenery), or functions (blue-light reduction, faster panel response time)--much of which I found gimmicky & unnatural. But if you’re after accurate/neutral colors, out-of-the-box color temperature leans slightly towards the bluer/daylight end of the spectrum. Armoury Crate does give you color space choices: Native, sRGB, DCI-P3 & Display P3. Native, sRGB, & Display P3 all measured ~7300K at 171 nits—all had a tiny cut in red & VERY slight boost in blue. DCI-P3 was closer to neutral at 7089K/165 nits w/a slight cut in red & tiny boost in green. Moving Armoury Crate’s color slider down to 20 brought things to 6553K w/just a slight bump in green that I tamed using Windows & NVIDIA color sliders getting me w/in 1 degree of perfectly neutral 6500K color temps!
The G14 is upgradable, but there are some gotchas. First, there are three bottom screws inexplicably hidden underneath rubber stoppers glued to the screw heads. They aren’t tall enough to provide any surface/scuff protection (so why have them?), but getting them off without damaging the plastic cover required irritatingly difficult effort w/some needle-nose tweezers.
Once you’re inside though, replacing the SSD & starting w/fresh Windows 11 was a piece of cake thanks to ASUS’ cloud recovery tool that works from BIOS. Read that again—you can reinstall Windows & factory ASUS software directly from BIOS without buying/downloading any software, messing with partitions, formatting a new drive, etc.—it was effortless. So long as you have a steady Internet connection, just pop in a new NVMe & let the tool run. I replaced the stock 512GB WD SN740 SSD (no slouch itself in performance) w/a 2TB WD Black SN850x...which ABSOLTELY hit WD’s crazy-high read/write speeds in the G14 BTW. It took about 20 mins for the download & 30 mins of unattended reboots & reinstallation to get back to the “let’s get Windows ready for you” welcome screen. **Be sure to resist the temptation to start mousing or press ‘OK’ during one of the MANY system reboots into Administrator mode, especially when a pop-up appears requesting confirmation to restore the “out of box experience”—it all happens automatically; kudos to ASUS for this one!**
The onboard RAM is soldered to the motherboard; but unlike previous G14s, you have a completely open SODIMM slot for upgrades! BUT, here’s where it gets tricky again. I used CPU-Z's info from the onboard RAM to purchase an IDENTICAL stick of 16GB Micron DDR5 4800Mhz CL40 memory—the G14 wouldn’t boot. I quickly learned through some Google & Reddit-fu that the G14 is notoriously picky about RAM upgrades. I tried Crucial RAM but still nothing; the laptop would power up but would not post, even after waiting to accommodate DDR5’s "memory training" time. I finally got a stick of Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 to work—the laptop booted immediately & has been rock solid ever since. Because DDR5 runs natively in dual-channel mode even with just one stick, the only performance gains I noted going to 32GB were in handling larger files & more open tabs than before; I measured no gaming performance increases like I have seen going from single to dual-channel RAM in other PCs.
How does it play? Honestly, the G14 is surprisingly capable, especially for an NVIDIA xx60 model pushing WAY more than 1080p. Sadly, you’re not going to max out the beautiful 165Hz panel on AAA titles @ Ultra settings in native 1600p; but you are going to enjoy gameplay & eye-candy way above 60fps—throw in G-Sync smoothing, DLSS scaling & frame generation & you’re going be loving how much performance you can get from a chassis this small. Sadly, the fans get a bit loud once the action gets hectic w/all settings maxed. The “performance” fan profile still lets you game comfortably on the built-in speakers, but the fans are loud enough to start getting intrusive—at turbo/full speed, fan noise is approaching 48dB so headphones are basically a necessity. Temps *can* get a bit toasty though the fans exhaust out both sides & the back of the chassis; the keyboard got noticeably hot a few times but never quite enough to become painful (which I have experienced in the past).
Finally, here is some sample gaming performance for your consideration: FPS Min/Max/Ave all @ 1600P, no V-Sync/G-Sync/DSR/FSR/DLSS/frame limiters. Obviously adding DLSS or dropping a few video settings a level or two will produce better results, but I wanted to see what unassisted top-tier performance looked like.
• Timespy – 9954 (Legendary); GPU temp peaked 81C
• AC Valhalla (NV recommended HIGH/Very HIGH): 35/130/86; GPU Temp peaked 80C
• Horizon Zero Dawn (Ultimate): 32/140/76; GPU Temp peaked 85C/CPU Temp peaked 92C
• Metro Exodus Enhanced (High+Raytracing): 30/85/48 GPU Temp peaked 80C - because raytracing was so punishing here, I added DLSS just to see what would happen: 39/107/70
• Shadow of the Tomb Raider (Highest): 65/121/81; GPU temp peaked 85C
• Gears 5 (Ultra): Ave 80FPS, Ave Min (5%) 61.3FPS; GPU temp peaked 76C/CPU peaked 90C

The actual laptop is a beast, bought it on a deal and I handles anything I throw at it. However, I bought mine on open box excellent which meant that it should have no cosmetic signs of damage. It arrived with a chip in the screen. I took it in to my local best buy where I had picked it up from but they said they couldn’t do anything about it, nore could they give me any money back for the difference in open box qualities I received. Good laptop, bad service

Good laptop for the price

Overall a good laptop for the cost; even better if you have the time to install g-helper and fine tune it to your uses.
Pro:
0. When on sale, the price/performance of this laptop is very good; if you need more than 16gb of memory like I do, it beats every other similar laptop currently available in 2024, including the 2024 version of this
1. Can charge via USB-C (there is a downside to this too, see cons)
2. Reasonably light (the 2024 version is lighter but has soldered ram), if you don't carry its own charger
3. 1 slot upgradeable ram (+ 16gb built in); you can get 32gb of ram reasonably cheaply; you can even get a 48gb stick to bring this to 64gb if you don't need quad channel above 32gb (DDR5 is by default dual channel, so the first 16gb you put in the slot will give you quad channel, and dual channel thereafter)
4. Trackpad/screen/keyboard are all pretty good for the price point
5. GPU can be turned off completely and battery life using only the CPU+iGPU is decent
Cons:
0. USB C charging go through battery even if it provides enough power for laptop. This means that 1) it degrades your battery when you do this and 2) you only get on-battery performance while plugged into USB C
1. The ports are placed towards the mid/front of the laptop, which means anything you plug in on the right side (or whichever side you use your mouse on) can interfere with your mouse usage. This is particularly annoying because all type A ports are on the right side. It's a solvable issue with a USB C hub on the left side.
2. Laptop gets pretty warm to the touch, even though I've tuned it to use much lower power (~25W CPU, ~50W GPU under heavy load). There's also vents on the left/right side of the laptop that can blow hot air onto your hand.
3. The top of the touchpad takes far too much pressure to physically click; this is especially strange if you're used to the macbook touchpad. Tapping it works fine though. And I wish the keycaps are slightly bigger like the 2024 version, but it's serviceable. The touchpad can sometimes be triggered while playing games, but it does offer an easy way to turn it off so that's a plus.
4. Charger is heavy; but you can use USB C in a pinch, assuming you're okay with the downsides aforementioned.

In terms of storage, the 512GB SSD is blazing fast, ensuring quick boot times and rapid data transfers. It offers ample space for all my games, movies, and files, and if needed, I can always expand the storage further.
Thermals are always a concern with gaming laptops, but ASUS has done an exceptional job in this department. The ROG Zephyrus 14 features an advanced cooling system that keeps the temperatures in check even during demanding gaming sessions. It's a relief to know that I can push the laptop to its limits without worrying about overheating.
To top it all off, the battery life of the Zephyrus 14 is surprisingly good for a gaming laptop of this caliber. I can easily get several hours of uninterrupted gaming or work done on a single charge, allowing me to be productive on the go.

Absolutely disappointed in Best Buy

I bought this thinking Best Buy would be the right company if something goes wrong, and I quickly realized I made a grave mistake. I used the laptop twice, and had a very odd screen malfunction. I called Best Buy 17 days after purchasing and using twice, because I travel often for work and didn’t get the chance to use it. The screen went funky, and I wanted to return my purchase, not trusting it. They said their return policy was 15 days, and would NOT make an exception. I will not be trusting Best Buy for expensive purchases moving forward.

My Perfect Portable Gaming Laptop
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I’ve owned a few of ASUS ROG laptops, my favorite for a while had been the M16 from a couple of years ago. I even tried out the G14 from last year and ended up sticking with the M16 and letting one of my sons use the G14. This new G14 has me ditching everything else. It really is almost the perfect device for me.
First, let’s begin with the fact that I really enjoy playing games, hence getting the G14, but aside from that I really like to have a portable device with decent battery life that isn’t too loud, and stays relatively cool. I like to do a lot of work around the house, and I carry my laptops back and forth with me from work to home daily. This great G14 ticks all those boxes for a portability workstation. It stays very cool, and quiet when using it on my lap. I could even get away with using it without a lap desk, something that I can’t say about most laptops, especially gaming ones. The sound when using for work, email, web browsing, Office is also super quiet. I can even get away using it while someone is sleeping near me without disturbing them. Battery life is enough for me, I can generally get over 6 hours on a charge when I use it for work. This is more than enough for me since; I am usually near an outlet.
Now, let’s move on to what most are wanting to hear about from a gaming laptop. Performance is amazing. The RTX4060 paired with the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics really gives you so many options for fantastic gaming performance. The 16GB of onboard RAM and processing power allow you to run just about any game at high resolutions while maintaining great, consistent frame rates. This outperforms my previous G14 and M16 by a good margin. Games load up very quickly, and I have yet to see any dropped frames from most games. Now, as is expected when you are pushing this system all out for your gaming sessions, you will increase the temperatures and fan noise will get much louder. Both seem to be less than my previous 2 ROG laptops. I am not sure if it’s the power efficiency of AMDs new CPUs or ASUS better heat dissipation, maybe both. I tested game performance using Elden Ring, WoW, Halo Infinite, Fortnite, and the Witcher 3, this gaming rig was able to handle each one without any problems. Everything was smooth and beautiful.
A couple of things that I ended up having to upgrade but might be different for others was the SSD and RAM. The included 512GB SSD is great, but with the size of today’s games I wanted a little more wiggle room. I ended up getting a 1TB SSD installed. While doing that a couple of things worth noting came up. First, you only get 1 SSD slot so that means you don’t get to keep the 512GB SSD and add your upgrade. You will need to replace the 512GB drive to upgrade. Second, the 16GB of included RAM from what I can tell is onboard, but you get 1 empty RAM expansion slot. It was easy enough to have another 16GB of DDR5 memory installed to bring it up to a total of 32GB of RAM. Both upgrades were relatively inexpensive and for me at least really make my experience using it that much better. The other thing that I ended up investing in was a 100w USBC PD charger. I was able to find one at Best Buy. This allows me to leave the included barrel charger on my desk at home, and just carry around the smaller 100w charger in my bag. I don’t really recommend using the 100w chargers for gaming, stick to the included barrel version, but it’s good enough for working and streaming.
I really, really enjoy using this laptop. It handles my portability/working necessities without any problem, and easily runs any AAA games that I throw at it. Good battery life, great thermals, fantastic performance, good portability, and I really love the design. This is such an easy recommendation to anyone looking for a great gaming setup but would like to stay mobile.

If you’re looking for a MacBook alternative that punches above its price-point, this is it. Asus builds a decent product, not top-tier but definitely not budget either. Build quality is good but the majority plastic construction feels a little less than premium.
The display is bright and colorful, the refresh rate is a nice bonus and doesn’t heat up. I don’t like the keyboard, it feels spongy and the rounded edges of the keys makes it feel clumsy.
Let’s talk about the processor….wow! It’s powerful (on performance mode) and has decent battery life (in eco mode). It does make a lot of noise when running it at full power and still builds heat despite the ridiculously loud fans. I plugged it into my 65” 4k HDR tv, closed the lid, and used a game controller to get away from the noise.
Gaming on the big screen tv playing Starfield maxed out on graphics settings yielded a smooth experience with almost no FPS drops. I upgraded the RAM to 32gb and put the fastest M.2 SSD I could find into it and now, no frame rate drops.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with this laptop. It’s a mid-tier gaming setup with $300 worth of upgrades but also a docile easy to transport everyday laptop. I’ve seen up to 9 hours of battery life offline, 5 streaming videos. It’s light and small enough to go in my bag almost everyday. I see it lasting me a couple of years and at this price point, that’s not too bad.

Sleek and Minimalistic

I like the sleek, minimalistic design and am a big fan of the matte white finish. The performance is great for the price, especially if you can pick it up during a sale. The screen is beautiful and vibrant, making watching YouTube and browsing the web a treat. It runs smoothly when using editing software (in my case, SolidWorks 2023). It's a great choice if you're looking for something that looks like a Mac but is running windows, considering the branding of ROG (Republic of Gamers). This PC doesn't scream 'gamer,' which I like.
The only downside I have with it is the facial recognition to sign in isn't the best and only really works when you're looking at the camera from a certain angle; even then, it doesn't work most of the time. My second complaint is the mousepad. It isn't as responsive as I would like, and its size makes it hard to navigate basic tasks. The Storage capacity in this model is absurd. A 1TB SSD is what it should be rather than 512GB. Keep in mind, windows 11 takes up a chunk of that space. The laptop does get a little hot if you're doing demanding tasks, such as playing video games. I would recommend getting a laptop stand to address the heat issue.
I give this laptop an 7/10.

Perfect Lightweight Gaming and Travel Rig

Great gaming laptop. Lightweight, sleek, and well built. I was apprehensive on the white color, screen size, and build. With the great deals that often run on this rig, the color was a gamble but seeing it in person and having used it for over a month, my doubts have been laid to rest. The screen size is just about perfect for anything you would need on the road. The build is high quality and there is no concern on the hinges after hauling it around in a backpack for training.
The gpu, cpu, and ram you get for the money (especially if you get a deal which runs often) is hard to beat. It has run every current game with no issues on high settings. The RAM and storage can also be easily upgraded. It'll run a bit hot when putting it through its paces, but that is to be expected.
I was looking for a gaming laptop to use full time for awhile and to haul around on the road for training and photography. This lightweight and quick laptop has not let me down. Very happy with this purchase.

Sleek and powerful gaming laptop

This ASUS ROG 14” gaming laptop is a powerhouse of a machine that delivers top-tier gaming performance in a compact and portable form factor. With its cutting-edge components and advanced features, this laptop is a dream come true for gamers who demand the best. It features a Ryzen 9 7940HS processor and Nvidia RTX 4060 graphics card.
The first thing that struck me about this laptop is its sleek and stylish design. The moonlight white is a very clean fit. The slim bezels around the screen give it a modern and minimalist look, while the brushed metal finish on the lid adds a touch of class. The laptop is also surprisingly lightweight and easy to carry around, despite packing so much power under the hood. However; even though it is lightweight it does not feel cheap and flimsy. There is a definite heft to this laptop that just screams quality.
Speaking of power, this laptop has it in spades. The AMD Ryzen 9 processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 graphics card combine to deliver blistering performance that can handle even the most demanding games with ease. I enjoyed firing up Apex Legends on this rig. I was blown away by the smooth and fluid gameplay, even at high settings and resolutions.
The 14-inch display is also a highlight of this laptop. The 120Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB color gamut provide a stunning and immersive visual experience, with crisp and vibrant colors that pop off the screen. The keyboard and touchpad are also comfortable and responsive, making it easy to get lost in your games for hours on end.
My chief complaint is that it only comes with a 512 GB SSD. At this level, I expect a 1 TB SSD.
Overall, I am impressed with the ASUS ROG 14” gaming laptop. It combines sleek design, powerful components, and advanced features to deliver an unparalleled gaming experience. If you're looking for a portable gaming machine that can handle any modern game you throw at it, this laptop is definitely worth considering.

Excellent value for the price when on sale for under $1000. New 2024 model is not worth the extra money in my opinion as the 2024 have no performance upgrades. Upgraded the Ram and it is absolutely the best gaming laptop at this small size. Had a legion with 12th gen i7 and RTX2070 super Max an and this laptop blows it out of the water and the screen while not the mini LED version in the higher models is very bright with amazing colors. Can run almost any new AAA game on high settings and 1080p with no issue at 90+ FPS. Jump up to QHD and still consistently 60+ FPS. It’s gorgeous white pearl color is surprisingly easy to keep clean with a little eyeglass cleaner and a microfiber cloth and it can handle work travel and play with ease. Battery life when not gaming is excellent but under heavy load don’t expect more than a few hours tops but for the money you can’t beat this small powerful beast.

The model reviewed is GA402XV-G14.R94060, which can possibly be found at other retailers. The Zephyrus G14 series focuses on portability while packing as much powerful hardware as possible. It’s a great laptop that is easy to take around yet still has enough power to play some big games today. While it can technically play games, one will have to find a balance on how much detail to turn on.
Within the Zephyrus G14 lineup are several models of varying hardware specs. The two main hardware specs in this laptop that will be different from others are the AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and nVidia's RTX 4060. The latter will be different from one submodel to the next. Everything else about the hardware inside the laptop appears to remain the same. (At least, this is according to ASUS’s website.)
Setting up Windows is as easy as can be. As a power user, I have opted to side-step Microsoft’s account requirement and created a local account instead. Normal Windows setup have remained consistent and easy to follow. So there is little to critique here. If one does want to bypass the Microsoft Account requirement, there are guides out there that will provide you with instructions.
For gaming performance, I installed 3 games to give it a quick run. None are going to really stress the hardware and I do not have enough time to thoroughly put it through more tests using other games in my library. The games are Guild Wars 2, Genshin Impact, and Obduction. The first two are my most played games while the last was a random game thrown in to check if it runs and performs well (which it did). I used MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner Statistic Server to monitor and display framerate and GPU usage. In Guild Wars 2, with a densely populated area, framerate hovered around 40fps. This isn’t bad and the sub-60fps can be attributed to the CPU being power/thermal limited. Granted, this is consistent across both “Silent” and “Performance” profiles as set in Armory Crate. From what I’ve gathered, GPU performance will be limited due to the power constraint of running off of battery power. Once the AC adapter is plugged in, that will change.
In the networking department, the Zephyrus G14 only comes with WiFi 6E for connectivity. There is no ethernet port to connect directly to a router. This is a bit of a letdown as there may be times you’ll need to transfer large quantities of data across the network. While having WiFi 6E does alleviate the issue a bit, it’s still dependent on wireless signals, which has a few elements that factor in the overall networking speed. I know that the focus of the laptop’s overall design is portability. Still, it’d be more convenient at times to simply have a network cable to directly connect to the network.
The laptop comes with a 1080p webcam with IR sensors. This allows for use of Windows Hello biometric login (AKA: facial recognition). One can debate between using a fingerprint or using facial recognition. But for my use case (and my work environment), I find using facial recognition to be much better for biometric login. Webcam image quality appears to be good enough and at least it is 1080p in resolution. So no complaints from me here.
For hardware upgrades or servicing the laptop, it is easy except for one thing. There are 3 hidden screws that are covered by a small rubber piece for no reason. You’ll need a flathead screwdriver that is as thin and small as possible to pry the rubber coverings off (tweezers can work too, maybe?). I would never know about this if I did not double check ASUS’s service manual to confirm any screws that I did not remove. One of the screws at the corner is captive and cannot be removed, which helps in prying off the cover. Once the back cover is finally removed, you can access the M.2 SSD and the SODIMM slot. There is only 1 of each with the SODIMM slot being empty. This leads me to believe 16GB is soldered onto the motherboard and is not upgradable. This is a shame since I am curious if using a faster DDR5 memory could help the performance in any way. The M.2 drive is a Western Digital SN740 512GB and will suffice at the start. If one wants to upgrade to higher capacity, you’ll need to make a backup first and have a Windows 11 installation thumb drive ready.
Thermal performance is a bit of a tricky topic. But I felt I should say something about it for this laptop. While I have no issue with heat, or the fans themselves, I do want to point out that you’ll have warm spots when you try to get as much performance as possible out of the laptop. It’s just the way it works when trying to squeeze in high performance parts onto a tiny space. Some people may feel uncomfortable having a laptop that generates a lot of heat while in use. But that’s why we have power/performance profiles. And while you can technically game on the laptop, expect to not have long battery life and warmer spots on the laptop as you do so.
The display is a topic I won’t critique much on. The high resolution of 2560x1600 is welcome but the high refresh rate is subjectively questionable. I personally don’t need something as high as 165Hz and I feel 120Hz is plenty enough for a high refresh rate. Oddly enough, some games are limited to 60fps, making having a high refresh rate questionable. Still, having a high refresh display is welcome nonetheless and is there when you can run something that fast.
Overall, I’m a fan of the Zephyrus G14 line of laptops. It’s small and portable and can handle some gaming while on the road. Even nice is that ASUS modified the design just slightly to allow the status LED lights to be viewable when the lid is closed. The 2021 model I have used previously did not have these LEDs viewable. The keyboard feels to be the same as before, with decent key travel and I prefer this over any other laptop keyboards out there. I’m a bit confused on why ASUS paired the 7940HS with a RTX 4060, as well as why they decided to send out this particular model to TIN members. I would prefer if they sent out either the RTX 4070 or RTX 4080 units instead. But that’s a different matter altogether.
The Good: portable, powerful, high refresh rate
The Bad: choice in GPU chip is questionable when paired with the selected CPU, no ethernet port
The Ugly: soldered/built-in RAM will limit RAM upgrade to the slowest speed

This is an amazing laptop. For looks and feel the laptop is very premium feel and look to it. Very light and portable, which is what I was looking for. The keyboard is very nice to type on and the mouse is large and accurate. The screen is wonderful and looks great while gaming. Yes, this laptop can game... but keep your expectations down to earth, you won’t be playing current triple A games on ultra with ray tracing (it is a 4060). But on medium settings you can game all day…. Plugged in. Battery life when doing regular work is good utilizing the integrated graphics, talking several hours (8+) doing office work and even more when just watching movies.
Processor is a beast! Has no problem keeping up with multiple windows or tasks open at the same time, even while gaming. The hard drive is very small for modern gaming or regular PCs. I swapped out the 500GB WD PC SN740 NVMe SSD drive for a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro and it works great. Also upgraded the RAM to 32GB with one 16GB module.
All around this is a good all round laptop. Great for work and play, ultra-portable, and able to do pretty much anything you can throw at it within reason. It is spendy… but keep in mind that it is a lot of power in a small package the looks and feels premium.

Significant upgrade to 4th gen model

I got this as my second model of the same laptop. My first one, which had the 4th generation 9-series Ryzen, was *almost* my ideal Windows laptop, but a few things kept it from perfection. This one is really close.. I’ve been playing with it for a few weeks so I can focus on the main improvements. Overall (sort of like a TL;DR), this is my primary and only Windows machine as I’m an Apple user otherwise. For Steam and anything requiring PC, I run this Asus ROG.
First thing I noticed, the power adapters are different. The older one is 180W while the new one is 240W. The barrel connector is the same but I didn’t want to try it in my new laptop. The newer model is also slightly bigger but the weight feels about the same. There are a bunch of minor design changes, such as the perforations on the lid being closer together and the bottom seemingly having more airflow. I did notice that the old bottom felt like one solid piece of plastic while the bottom of the new one had a warped, plastic cover but I don’t really care about the bottom. Ports are the same except the new one now has a MicroSD reader. Quite a welcome addition!
Opening them up, you immediately see that the new one has a much thinner bezel, especially at the bottom. It also managed to add a webcam into the same size top bezel. This was an extremely noticeable omission from the last model. And then the touchpad. I never hated the touchpad but it was nothing to write home about. On the new one, it appears to be at least 50% bigger. The size approaches Macbook territory, which brings me to one of my only two complaints. I’ve been getting a lot of the touch pad registering my right palm, as if the palm rejection isn’t tuned properly. It’s something I have to look into but hasn’t bothered me enough to think about yet.
I ran a bunch of Game Pass games and a bunch of stuff for my Steam library and it plays it as well as my Xbox does. I’m not really into dissecting the graphics, I just use recommended settings and play. Vanquish, Halo, Gears 5, Hades, Cuphead, and Peggle all ran great. The fan definitely kicks on when you game. Totally understandable.
The only other thing I don’t like about this new one is the fact that it only has 512GB vs my old one which had 1TB. 1TB should be standard for a gaming laptop.
Oh yeah and this one has crazy RGB keyboard backlighting. The original model had what people called atrocious backlighting. I never had a problem with it but it was certainly not the brightest and not the most even. This one is pretty sweet, it can be tailored to breathe or pulsate. Adds touch of gamer flair to the whole thing.
Overall, I’m really happy with the upgrade. The small details like the webcam and the new touchpad and obviously significantly more power and the RGB lighting make it feel like I have a pretty awesome Windows PC. I’m not an every day PC user but I like knowing that I have the good stuff for when I need it. Wholly recommended.

I’ve had this item for close to a month now and it’s amazing. I’m not a huge laptop/pc person but I am a gamer so here’s my overall thoughts
Most AAA games run great on this with most of the games I’ve played running high on its quality settings, that being said though it’s important to keep note of the temperature of your CPU and GPU as overheating is not that uncommon, all it takes is a bit of tweaking (and maybe even uninstalling armour crate) for some good consistent temps.
The 16gb of ram is okay, it’s kinda what you expect. I rarely ever cap it out outside of a minecraft server with a ton of mods lol. But the available ram slot is definitely awesome and I do see myself upgrading in the future. The SSD is a pain tho. Being only around 500gb it doesn’t hold much especially with how much space new games require, but thankfully that is upgradable as well.
If you’re getting this for school and like gaming on the side, this is amazing.
Like I mentioned earlier uninstalling armour crate is useful for your temps, you don’t need half the stuff there and I wish I knew that because I’ve had to lower my graphics a lot just because of the temps.
Anyways that being said, it’s a great system, good size, enough ports for everything you need, overall a good product.

Dear Darknite,
We certainly understand your disappointment and the inconvenience this may have caused.
All ASUS products undergo intensive quality control testing and inspections. If the laptop doesn't bootup into Windows, please try to perform a power cycle. If problem persisted, unplug the AC adapter and let the battery drain completely. After the battery was fully drained, plug the AC adapter back to the laptop, do not power on until the battery was charged. If still the same results, we recommend that you send the product in for service in order to determine if this is a hardware issue so this may be resolved immediately. A RMA number is required to send it in for service. For RMA details, please go to: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/818/.

Sleek Design, Powerful System

Over the past six years, my experience with Asus systems has been consistently positive, and my recent usage of this particular system over the last month has uphold that reputation. The laptop have a sleek design and lightweight build, coupled with a powerful CPU that impressed me with its performance during intensive tasks involving multiple CPU cores. The graphic cards toggles between dedicated AMD and NVIDIA effectively, preserving battery life during lighter tasks such as web browsing and word processing, where the system demonstrated an impressive endurance of 7-9 hours. Additionally, the availability of an extra RAM slot allows for easy expansion to 32 or 48 GB.
However, at first I had lots of issues with Armory Crate program. While the hardware itself held up great, the software/driver was problematic. The program's tendency to randomly overclock the CPU and GPU resulted in unnecessary heating, even during idle periods, significantly reducing battery life to one hour. Even in silent mode, Armory Crate just overclocked CPU. In some instances, the system even shut down due to overheating while idle and even on a cooling pad! To solve these issues, I recommend opting for Windows' native battery and hardware controls, and for GPU management, updating and utilizing NVIDIA Experience proprietary controls for a more stable and reliable use. After that I didn't have any heating and battery issues.
