Asus Brings the Performance and the Heat

ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 (GA403WR‑G14.R95070TI) Review "Asus Brings the Performance and the Heat" ASUS’ 14‑inch Zephyrus G14 line has long been regarded as a benchmark for portable desktop power. The 2024 GA403WR variant tested (SKU GA403WR‑G14.R95070TI, available at Best Buy) pairs AMD’s new Ryzen AI 9 HX processor with an RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU and tops it off with a 14‑inch 120 Hz OLED panel. In my hands‑on testing, I found a machine that absolutely flies, so long as its thermals are kept in check. Specifications: • CPU: AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX (Strix Point, 12 cores / 24 threads, up to 5.1 GHz, integrated NPU) • Integrated GPU: Radeon 890M (RDNA 3, 16 CUs) • Discrete GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU (12 GB GDDR6, 90–105 W TGP) • Memory: 32 GB LPDDR5X‑6400 (soldered, dual‑channel) • Storage: 1 TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD (M.2 2280, user‑replaceable) • Display: 14‑inch 2880 × 1800 OLED, 120 Hz, 16:10, Pantone‑validated, Gorilla Glass with AR coating • I/O Ports: – 2 × USB‑A 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps) – 1 × USB‑C 3.2 Gen 2 (DP 1.4, 100 W PD) – 1 × USB‑C 4 (40 Gbps, DP 1.4, 100 W PD) – 1 × HDMI 2.1 (4K120 / 8K60) – 3.5 mm combo audio jack – micro‑SD (UHS‑II, up to 312 MB/s) • Charging: 240 W proprietary barrel charger included; supports up to 100 W USB‑C PD input • Wireless: Wi‑Fi 7 (802.11be 2 × 2) + Bluetooth 5.4 • Battery: 73 Wh 4‑cell Li‑ion Design and Build: At 3.5 lb and clad in magnesium alloy, the G14 feels rock solid yet backpack friendly. A beveled front edge keeps the palm rest comfortable while the firm hinge allows almost effortless one‑hand opening. Under the lid, the glossy OLED panel is surprisingly resistant to reflections thanks to a subtle anti‑reflection coating. Its rich colors, true blacks, and punchy contrast are every bit as impressive as reviewers across the web have claimed, making games and HDR video look outstanding. Inputs and Audio: Typing is classic Zephyrus: shallow but crisp keys with single‑zone RGB. The edge‑to‑edge glass touchpad is large, silky smooth, and flawlessly responsive. Side‑firing speakers deliver shockingly full‑bodied sound until heavy loads force the cooling system to drown them out. Performance: Out of the box (Windows 11 with Armoury Crate set to Ultimate for dGPU only) the RTX 5070 Ti flexes real muscle. 3DMark results: • Time Spy: 13 702 (86 FPS) – Legendary • Time Spy Extreme: 7 339 (49 FPS) – Legendary • Speed Way: 3 957 (40 FPS) – Legendary • Steel Nomad (DX12): 3 468 (35 FPS) – Excellent • Fire Strike Ultra: 9 669 (60 FPS) – Legendary • Port Royal: 10 008 (46 FPS) – Legendary In real‑world play Overwatch 2 at 1440p Ultra holds at the 120 FPS limit of the screen. Thermals and Acoustics: Fast hardware creates serious heat. Surface temperatures reached 94 °F (34 °C) on the palm rests during web work, 109–111 °F (43 °C) around the WASD area while gaming, and 119 °F (48 °C) at the rear exhaust after consecutive benchmark loops. Fans peak around 50 dBA during heavy loads, which noticeably muffles the otherwise impressive speakers. In warm rooms sustained loads will throttle clocks unless you elevate the rear, add a cooling pad, or reduce settings. Software Experience: ASUS ships a refreshingly clean Windows image. Boot to desktop takes about 15 seconds with 167 GB already used. Automatic GPU switching introduced one‑ to two‑second freezes and a single BSOD while starting Time Spy Extreme. Setting Armoury Crate to Ultimate (dGPU only) before gaming removes the hiccups, though changing modes requires a full reboot. Webcam, Ports, and Storage: The 720p webcam is serviceable for calls and includes an IR sensor that enables fast Windows Hello log‑ins, but image quality trails newer 1080p options. Port selection is solid with USB‑C 4, HDMI 2.1, and micro‑SD, yet the single 1 TB SSD fills quickly. Power users should plan on a larger NVMe drive or a fast USB‑C 4 enclosure. Advice for New Owners: •Lock the GPU to dGPU‑only mode in Armoury Crate (System > GPU Mode > Ultimate) before launching demanding games or benchmarks. This eliminates the freezes and the BSOD observed when the system auto‑switched graphics. Changing this setting forces a reboot. • Reboot each time you adjust Armoury Crate power or fan profiles. Many options do not apply until after a restart. • Elevate the rear edge or use a cooling pad. Better airflow dropped surface temps by several degrees and kept clocks from throttling in long sessions. • Game on an external keyboard and mouse. Deck temperatures can exceed 110 °F under sustained GPU load, making the built‑in keys uncomfortable. • Keep the system in an air‑conditioned space. High ambient temperatures quickly push the chassis into the thermal limit. • Update NVIDIA drivers directly (no login required) for the best performance and bug fixes. • Budget for storage expansion. A fast USB‑C 4 or Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure can double as an external Steam or Epic library with only a minor load‑time penalty versus the internal drive. Verdict: After several days with the GA403WR, I see it as a pint‑sized powerhouse that lives up to the Zephyrus reputation, provided you keep it cool. On a desk with AC and external peripherals it rivals bulkier sixteen‑inch rigs, but on your lap in summer it quickly becomes uncomfortable. During my years of constant travel I longed for a laptop I could slip into a carry‑on, connect to a hotel TV over HDMI 2.1, and enjoy full PC gaming at night. This G14 finally fits that role. It remains efficient on integrated graphics for flights and cafés, then unleashes the RTX 5070 Ti once plugged in. Buy if: • You want desktop‑class RTX 5070 Ti performance in a portable form factor. • A vibrant 120 Hz OLED panel is essential. • You game on AC power with external keyboard, mouse, and added ventilation. Skip if: • Fan noise and hot surfaces are deal breakers. • You need an excellent webcam for frequent video calls. • Your game library easily exceeds 1 TB of storage.

love. Amazing laptop. Brilliant performance and aesthetics. I wish best buy stocked more eclipse gray models. Quality of product is almost on par with MacBook. The new ASUS Rog Zephyrus G14 (2025) that I have been using for about a week now and its been a blast so far. The sleek portable, thin look, feel, performance, specs including the beautiful vibrant OLED display is awesome. -- Design -- As mentioned above, this laptop is fantastic from its thin, sleek look and the white color for this makes it feel like a premium 14 inch laptop with its sturdy chassis made out of premium metals. Ergonomics feel great, smooth hinges, the only small minor thing I wish was front and center and noticeable is the LED indicator lights such as the SSD (formerly known as the HDD) Indicator LED was more pronounced and shown to the user and the charging indicator LED light. The SSD LED helps if Windows ever happens to freeze and your curious if the SSD is doing something such as installing updates, working in the background, etc. Same with the charging, if I was in a rush and wanted to glance for a second from a far distance to see if the charging LED color has changed to a solid color of some sorts stating the laptop is charged, I can unhook and im ready to rush out the door and be worry free if my laptop is charged all the way or not. -- Display -- The screen on this laptop is a awesome 14 inch. 16:10 glossy slick looking OLED. Its beautiful looking at anything on the OLED with its deep blacks and colors that just punch. Upon looking in the settings, it shows a 240Hz refresh rate with instant response time. If you worry about content/games being to big on this small screen, I assure you, don't be as the screen and resolution set at 2880 x 1800 and to me, it feels just as if I was on a 16 inch laptop. A big win to ASUS for this and most appreciated for content creation, media consumption and game playing. -- Performance -- To me, this laptop feels like one of the most powerful 14 inch laptops out there today. With its AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor and a integrated Radeon 890m GPU along with that, but.... lets not also forget the main NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti with 12gb of GDDR7 VRAM packed into this AND last but not least, a dedicated NPU, the usage out of this is limitless. Trying out some games, first off, recently released in the past month, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered, by default, everything was set to medium in graphics, I put all the settings to Ultra and I was averaging around 55-60FPS. 2nd game I tried was Cyberpunk 2077 with RT on Overdrive, DLSS 4.0 - DLSS Balanced, MFG on 4x, Ray Reconstruction On, Path Tracing on, around 100FPS avg. With just these 2 games, I was just in awe with how smooth and great these games played. Also do not forget, This is also considered a Copilot+ PC with a dedicated NPU, enabling Windows 11 features like Recall, which uses snapshots to help you find content via natural language search. It also includes the updated Paint app with Copilot, allowing AI-based image generation, background removal, and editing. -- Connectivity -- For charging, this has a proprietary square plug for the charging port on the left side, then it has its fair selection of ports on the sides. The port selection is really generous here starting on the left side of the laptop, (1) HDMI 2.1 port, (1) USB-C 4.0, 1x USB-A 3.2, audio jack, then on the right side, you get (1) USB-A 3.2, (1) USB-C Gen 2 & micro SD UHS-II card reader. Then it has WiFi 7 2×2 with Bluetooth 5.4 (Mediatek MT7925). Didn't have any problems with WiFi what so ever, in fact, this laptop out performs my ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 (2023) model's Wifi module by a long shot downloading at the max speeds I expect. -- Interface -- The keyboard layout is cozy, typing on this feels excellent with great feedback and very quiet, may I dare say, quiet actuations. The keys are backlit with RGB, bright and good lighting LED's. While looking through the settings, I see its only a single zone RGB control over the keyboard RGB and not for each individual key but im ok with that as I usually set it to my favorite color, a mid tone blue. The touchpad is huge and its made of glass, It could be a tad smaller but not really a gripe, just a wish as sometimes when im typing, my palm will accidently swipe to something else on the screen. -- Battery -- Battery life is ok on this, its a 73 Wh, up to 180 W power adapter, USB-C charging up to 100W which I rather would use the included ASUS power adapter for the full quicker charge, 50% in 30 minutes. But using it on battery, I got on 2 occasions with a full charge, I got around 5-6 hours of usage with no gaming, just casual browsing, doing work, playing a video here and there. Then with a 3rd charge with a game running at max settings, 1 hour average before the battery is depleted and needs to be recharged again. -- Sound -- I give double thumbs up to ASUS. The speakers on this laptop are so loud, and so crystal clear, its enough to fill a room that there is no need for external speakers hooked up. To sum it up, the sound is rich! -- Suggestion -- For the next Zephyrus line next year, please DO NOT GET RID OF THE LED INDICATOR LIGHTS! Make them more noticeable on the front/top of the keyboard or if needed, put the lights on the sides for ones like me who are use to seeing these LED's/lights back in the 90's/2000's on PC's and laptops. -- Conclusion-- As this is my main laptop, it has a gorgeous display, great keyboard, plenty of ports, rich sound/speakers, and performance beast, its a premium must buy. I am looking forward to continue using this for work, play while lounging around. ASUS really did a banger job with this premium carefully made laptop!

I have come to love the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 gaming laptop so much that I started carrying it with me more frequently, and I’ve been using it not only for gaming but also for everyday tasks. I already own a couple of gaming laptops, with older model graphics cards RTX3070 and RTX4080, with screens sizes varying from 15.6 to 18". I was hesitant to go to a smaller form factor machine. So far, it’s been great, the Asus Zephyrus G14 is a powerful laptop boasting an RTX 5070 Ti GPU and 32 GB of memory, along with the latest technology in this new AI world. I particularly like the fact that the laptop is much lighter and not as bulky compared to the other ones I own. It is easy to carry around, it can easily fit in your backpack or carry-on luggage along with your other stuff. Even the power adapter is not nearly as heavy as the ones from other gaming laptops I own. There are a few things I miss that are found in bigger devices, but I think, if you like mobility and don’t want to carry heavy stuff around, and need a powerful device, this machine is what you’d need (and want). - Pros: Small, light, high end GPU, long battery life, great sound. - Cons: no numeric pad, no touch screen. >> Setup It took longer than expected to have the machine ready to be used. It was mostly Windows updates that took the bulk of the setup, as expected. The whole thing, from initial setup, to downloading updates and applying them, and reaching the first welcome screen, took over half an hour. I also decided to go to the BIOS utility to test all the components in the machine. I did that after the initial setup, because at some point after leaving the machine on for a couple of days (and going to and back from hibernation multiple times), the F1 keys wouldn't work. So, I decided to test the keyboard and other components. For the keyboard test, some of the keys couldn’t be tested, there is even a note in the test stating that fact. Nevertheless, all that could be tested went fine, no errors that the BIOS diagnostics utility could find. >> Overall Specs For this small factor device, to have an RTX5080Ti and 32 GB of RAM, plus the newer processors with NPU (neural processing unit), shows the lengths Asus engineering team has gone. It is not advertised anywhere, but I do believe this machine qualifies as a Copilot+ PC. The keyboard is color-lit and it feels easy on typing. The screen is one selling point as well, it boasts a max 120Hz refresh rate, enough to enjoy playing on it and watching videos. One thing I miss for my everyday use is the touch screen. Lacking a touch screen seems expected for a gaming laptop, but if you are used to having one, you’ll sure miss that feature. It has plenty of connectivity options. For video, there are HDMI and USB-C ports that can be used to match almost any high-end external monitor. USB-A/B ports if you’d want wired keyboard and mouse as opposed to Bluetooth ones. While playing is ok as it is, a better experience nonetheless is if add a full-size keyboard and gaming mouse to this laptop. Given the Zephyrus size, having an extra keyboard doesn't add too much to your backpack if you can add it; however, a gaming mouse is a must to include in your backpack. I run PCMark and VRMark benchmarks for this laptop, and it seems strange that those programs were not able to recognize details of the configuration, such as the CPU. I am not sure why that is happening, and I won’t have time any time soon to look into that. Anyways, running the software showed decent numbers for this laptop. >> Graphics, video and sound The resolution and refresh rate are excellent for a device this size. One would argue that for this small factor you don't need more than 120Hz refresh rate, but I suspect higher refresh rates would yield even better-looking graphics (well, perhaps the machine would get hotter as well). As it is common in gaming laptops, besides the RTX GPU, it comes with another “regular” GPU that is used whenever there is no need to use the high-end GPU. In terms of sound, it boasts a super bass with crisp and clear sound, overall great sound experience. I was not expecting it, but the Asus Zephyrus G14 has got to be one of the laptops with the best built-in speakers out there. >> Connecting an external monitor Besides using an external keyboard and an external gaming mouse, I am sure another common scenario is to connect the gaming laptop to an external monitor. I have in my possession a monitor capable of high refresh rates, which I have connected to this laptop with great results overall. The only “major” issue I had was with the mouse pointer disappearing when moving to the external monitor, yet I could click on different areas (and using the “Ctrl” key know where the mouse was). The “fix” for this issue was to make the external monitor as the “default” one in Windows. After doing so, I could see the mouse cursor in the external monitor as well as in the laptop screen. I still need to figure out what the problem is when the external monitor is not set as the default and also why sometimes I get some random mouse pointers when going to the title bar in different apps. These are somewhat minor nuances, but it’d be great if all was smooth. I’ve tried three configurations for connecting the laptop to my external monitor, HDMI to HDMI and USB-C to DP: - HDMI to HDMI: I could get 60Hz at best in 4K configuration. Going to lower resolutions it seems that you could choose higher refresh rates; however, I would get blank screens when doing so. Also, the NVDIA app wouldn’t recognize the monitor as being G-Sync compatible (known issue, only if connecting to the DP port in the monitor we get G-Sync compatibility). At the end, it looks like when connecting HDMI to HDMI it is just best to stay with the defaults (bummer). - USB-C to DP: I had to use the right-side SUB-C port to connect the laptop to the monitor; it wouldn’t recognize the monitor with the left USB-C port (the one next to the HDMI port). The Nvidia app gave the following options to set the refresh rate to: 60Hz, 95Hz and 144hz (!!). Well, the laptop is supposed to max at 120Hz, but well having 144Hz option doesn’t hurt I’d think. G-Sync compatibility in this setup, great. >> Battery life One important aspect is battery life. I’d say the battery life is pretty good in this device. For example, I played videos full screen on the laptop, and after 5 hours it’d be only 50% consumed. Playing of course the battery drains much faster, but you can still get a few hours of great entertainment. >> Gaming experience No major complaints about my gaming experience. Provided you have the right peripherals, the experience is very good. One thing I noticed while playing, though, is that it gets very hot especially at high refresh rates. At high refresh rates it gets so that you’d need to rely on the external keyboard and mouse so that you don’t end up "cooking" your fingers to medium rare. Another thing that I noticed is that when launching a game, it’d freeze for a brief period. First and foremost, my main goal in getting this machine was to be able to enjoy my games at high quality levels while on the go. It’s been a nice experience so far. There are a few hiccups that I encounter here and there but they don’t get in the way of the whole experience. I was planning on giving this device a 4, but I think this is closer to a 5 star, so I am giving it a 5-star rating.

Great Excellent quality 3K screen VRR up to 120Hz Great typing experience Great speakers Aluminum chassis feels premium, light, and strong Very thin for the performance No screen wobble Windows Hello facial login SD card slot Includes Advance Optimus and MUX switch Ports are towards the rear on the sides and out of the way Large, smooth trackpad Upgradable SSD and Wi-Fi 32GB of RAM should last for several years More VRAM this year for the mid tier GPU Can be silent and functional when needed Reasonably quiet even on Turbo iGPU power enough for gameplay while extending battery life Good Wi-Fi even though it is MediaTek Long battery life on silent eco mode Nearly as performant as the 5080 but a better value Not So Great GeForce Driver issues with latest version MSI Afterburner causes severe lag Armory crate has buried some useful settings MicroSD card slot instead of full sized Keyboard backlight uniformity issues Single zone RGB Trackpad rattles when tapped RAM not upgradable No ethernet port Only one USB-C 4 port Doesn’t always wake from sleep Chassis and Ports 9.5/10 The 2025 G14 looks identical to the previous generation but that is a good thing. It feels solid with no hint of flex. There is no detectable screen wobble. Included is a 200-watt power brick with the proprietary slim power adapter. Asus limits the GPU to 110 watts, but with G-Helper you can go as high as 120. You get two USB-A and two USB-C with one of each on each side towards the back. Only one USB-C port is version 4. The intake vents have a dust filter to help slow down buildup of dust internally. Screen 10/10 Asus lists the screen as 400 nits SDR and up to 500 nits. Windows reports a peak brightness of 616. Overall, it gets bright enough to work in a well-lit room and has the inky blacks of an OLED. It supports VRR up to120Hz which is very playable without sacrificing battery life. The 3K screen seems like a bit of an overkill at 14 inches but it does look very sharp. While there is no mention of pixel arrangement it doesn’t exhibit the color fringing that you normally see with OLEDs that causes blurry text. Even checking close up, it isn’t visible. This means that, unlike many OLEDs, it can do well both with gaming and productivity. With 100% of DCI-P3 it also does very well for professional work without needing to depend on an external monitor for color accuracy. It does seem to have an anti-glare coating, but not so aggressive that it crushes the contrast. Keyboard 9/10 Asus states the keys are 12.24% larger than before, but comparing it to a family members older Zephyrus it is hard to see. Travel feels like it has increase and activation is more consistent. Typing had no issues with missed keys and showed no signs of ghosting. Activation in typing and gaming has been very reliable. A weak area that remains from every white/silver Zephyrus is backlight uniformity and consistency. Asus seems to have improved the contrast making the keys easier to read, but the backlight is still inconsistent from key to key. The secondary markings are almost unreadable. The backlight is a single zone. Individual RGB keys would be nice for color coding for games to better highlight groups. Looking beyond those shortcomings, the keyboard is excellent in regular usage. The keys have a silent tactile feel with about half the travel of a dedicated low-profile mechanical. Travel is even with no detectable wobble and activation is roughly at the midpoint. Trackpad 8.5/10 It seems like Asus has made some gains in their trackpads, but there is still room for improvement. It is much larger than my older style and the glass surface feels smoother. Palm rejection has improved with no false activations so far. The click also feels better than it used to with a softer feel with a firm click. The one area that may have actually become worse is the diving board rattle. It seems every diving board style trackpad has this but this generation the rattle when tapped seems louder. It would be nice to see Asus transition to a haptic version, but it is the only gripe with this trackpad. In daily usage it does the job smoothly and reliably. Speakers 9.5/10 It feels like high end laptops are hitting the peak of what they can do out of a small chassis. Asus says they have increased the volume 252%. They don’t specify what it is 252% louder than, but they do get very loud. They get loud enough to where people on the opposite side of the house can hear what game you are playing. If you enable Dolby Atmos, the default mode does make the speakers noticeably quiet for surround sound. While volume is good, it is the sound quality that stands out. These are the best speakers I have heard in a Windows laptop. For the size they also have a surprising amount of bass. Battery 9/10 Asus has struck a good balance between battery life and weight. While you could drain the battery in less than 2 hours on Performance with the right game using the dGPU, the iGPU is a better choice. The Ryzen processor seems a good fit for this since integrated Radeon graphics performance is better than Arc. While I haven’t had the opportunity to try gaming on battery I have gamed on this processor on a previous system. Based on that, I wouldn’t be surprised if you can get over 4 hours of gaming using the iGPU. If you just need to do basic productivity work and you run it in silent on Eco it is closer to 9-10 hours before even trying to tweak things further with G-Helper. Cooling 9.5/10 Asus claims they have further improved cooling in the latest generation. While I don’t get an opportunity to game for multiple hours often, I can say it handles heat well in the 30-60 minutes I usually get. The top of the keyboard near the screen gets hot but the keyboard area stays manageable. Even though the center of the keyboard gets hot, the heat doesn’t transfer much to the keys and is mostly on the metal chassis below. The current design does a good job of shedding the heat to the center and back off the chassis away from your hands. Comparing it to a 2025 G16 a family member has; it does feel slightly cooler in the keyboard area. It also sheds the heat and cools back down quicker. While it can definitely get hot, it seems to have better control on thermals making me wonder if Asus was too conservative. Wi-Fi 9/10 I can’t give full credit with the history of MediaTek, but so far this Wi-Fi card has been surprisingly good. Unlike previous cards this one hasn’t randomly disappeared or stopped functioning after waking from sleep. I only have Wi-Fi 6E so that is as far as I can test but in most cases the system prefers 5Ghz since 6Ghz is so sensitive to obstructions. That said, this card has been one of the fastest and most well behaved on my network. Performance 8.5/10 Of course, as a slim laptop you don’t expect it to be the top performer but, at least for right now, it seems to be hampered by some driver issues. Out of the box, everything was working surprisingly fast but then in the process of trying to find the limits problems were found. For starters, the latest version of the GeForce driver caused the screen to flash and change brightness. Then the driver crashed twice. The easy fix is just to roll back the driver. The main issue is having Afterburner just installed caused games to be unplayably slow at any resolution. Hopefully there will be a fix in the future but without it I can’t get the full picture of the systems capability, but you can get a general idea. On Turbo, Forza Motorsport benchmarked at 38FPS, DLSS off, and every setting maxed out to see the upper limit. While Doom Eternal doesn’t have a benchmark, it felt smooth with every setting maxed out, DLSS off, native resolution. Halo Infinite was smooth on Ultra at native resolution with no scaling. If feels like there is more headroom in this card. The largest game I threw at it still left over 2GB of VRAM. Without Afterburner it is hard to say but it felt like the GPU still had some headroom as well. Early benchmarks suggest the same with the 5070ti coming in less than 10% slower than the 5080 but at a much better value. Final Thoughts The 2025 version of the G14 feels like a refinement of the first generation of this chassis. While there is still room to improve, such as finally fixing the normal quirks of Asus laptops like the screen not always turning on from sleep, it feels like the most polished version of the series so far. If you are in the market for a compact and versatile premium laptop and prefer a balance of value and performance, then this Zephyrus G14 is worth a look.

This little ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G14 powerhouse is a wonderful addition to my gaming options. I also own an ASUS GT15CF-I73080VR Gaming Desktop with an Nvidia RTX 3080. I’ve been very impressed and happy with Asus products so I jumped at this opportunity. The G14 sports a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti with 12gb of GDDR7 VRAM, and WOW does it deliver. I only get a few hours per week to game with life getting in the way. I’ve strictly been using this laptop to game for the last week. It’s been great and it’s handled everything I’ve thrown at it. For whatever reason, I’ve been stuck playing Cuphead again. Just kidding, I know the reasons, it’s such a beautiful well-made game for one, and it’s still a great challenge even after beating it previously. The 14” 16:10 OLED display just pops, especially with Cuphead. The colors are so extremely vivid, I’ve never experienced anything like it. The speakers are so loud, I almost forgot to test them as I was use my headphones for the majority of my gaming. Asus knocked this one out of the park as well, as it’s considerably clearer than my desktop speakers. Outside construction is very sturdy and the laptop itself is slim, lightweight, and feels great all-around. From my count there is 1- HDMI port, 1- USB-C port, 2 total USB-A , audio jack input, 1- USB-C Gen 2, micro SD reader. The power input is something I’ve never seen before, it’s a square port/plug-in that reminds me of Apples lightning connection. The plug is both female and male, likewise with the port on the laptop. The port on the laptop is female with an internal male connection. I would put money on this being proprietary to Asus, unless I’m just behind the times? I like the function / shortcut keys and the fact there are so many available options at the touch of a button. That said, literally as I type this review, I pressed the function key + F5 to change the operating mode, and the PC froze up. This is the second time now this laptop has frozen and it’s very concerning since it’s only a week old. The first time it froze when I was initially setting up the laptop. The keyboard strokes are very pleasant and quiet. Trackpad is well made and responsive.During gameplay, and also when I was bench testing, the very top material above the keyboard is getting extremely hot. The middle of the keyboard itself also seems to generate quite a bit of heat. I like face recognition, as it opens up the laptop without a password. That said, I don’t like the fact that you cannot physically close the camera. Paranoid, maybe, even still, I want the option to physically close off the camera. Trivial and by no means not even close to a deal breaker. This is a Copilot+ PC, I’ve been having a lot of fun using the Paint app with Copilot. The AI-based image generation is insane, and I cannot wait to see what this will bring in the future as AI continues to get better. My family is getting annoyed with me showing them the images I’ve been generating with this. For testing I was also playing Days Gone. Switching the Operating mode to Turbo is where this little beast really started working hard. At one point the CPU temps were into the high 80 degrees Celsius. The fans started kicking in and having a hard time keeping things at bay. The decibels were coming around 40-45 dBA. But honestly if you’re going to run a laptop like this for gaming, you should have a fan cooled laptop pad or stand. At the very least get it up and off a flat surface. The vents cover 2/3 of the bottom of the laptop. I can’t say enough good things about this laptop, sturdy, state of the art, powerful to handle anything you can dish out at it, and just a joy to use. Rating for this is a 4.5 due to the crashing issues I’ve experienced personally, otherwise it would be a solid 5/5.

I purchased this laptop for video editing using DaVinci Resolve and remote DIT work when I travel overseas. It updated it's bios 3 times in the middle of an edit. it also restarted multiple times in the middle of an edit. I used capcut which it was preinstalled. But I use Canon RAW and this computer can't seems to handle it.

Best Laptop for an Engineering Student

TL;DR If you need a 14-inch laptop that can handle MATLAB/Simulink, CAD/CAE (SolidWorks, CATIA, Fusion 360, ANSYS), coding, and the occasional AAA game without turning your backpack into a brick, the 2025 G14 with RTX 5070 Ti and 32GB RAM is the sweet spot. It pairs the new Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 performance with a 3K 120 Hz OLED, strong thermals for its size, and a practical port selection — all while staying around 3.46 lb / 0.63 in thick. Battery life isn’t amazing, but it’s good enough for a day of classes with power-saving modes. Why it’s great for engineering work: 1) Real workstation-class compute in a 14-inch chassis The 2025 G14 can be configured with the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 (12 cores / 24 threads, Zen 5) — a serious step up for multi-threaded compiles, simulations, and MATLAB tasks — paired with NVIDIA RTX 50-series GPUs. The 5070 Ti variant hits the right balance between performance and thermals, with CUDA support for GPU-accelerated simulation and machine learning toolboxes. 2) GPU power that matches your workload The 5070 Ti is fast enough to outrun rival 14-inch laptops without the heat and noise tradeoffs of the top-tier GPU configurations. Expect excellent results for GPU-accelerated rendering, finite-element previews, and AI workloads, while still being more efficient than most 16-inch machines. 3) A display you can design on The 14” 2880×1800 OLED (120 Hz) panel is sharp and color-accurate — perfect for CAD line work, PCB layouts, and long coding sessions. 4) Portable enough to carry daily At ~3.46 lb and 0.63” thin, this laptop delivers workstation-level performance in a size you can comfortably carry around campus. 5) The right ports for labs and presentations You get HDMI 2.1, 2× USB-A, USB-C (USB4 with PD and DisplayPort), a microSD UHS-II reader, and a 3.5 mm jack — so you can plug into lab monitors, dev boards, and projectors without a pile of dongles. 6) Battery life that’s decent for the category You can get around 5–6 hours of mixed use on battery in efficiency mode, which is enough for a day of classes if you’re careful. USB-C charging makes it easy to top up between lectures. Performance notes for engineers: • MATLAB / Simulink / Python: 12 cores + 32GB RAM handle large datasets and simulations; CUDA on the 5070 Ti unlocks GPU-accelerated toolboxes and AI frameworks. • CAD/CAE: While it’s not a Quadro, the raw GPU performance is more than enough for student-level assemblies, FEA pre/post processing, and CFD visualization. • Coding and compiling: High multi-threaded performance and fast SSDs keep build times short. The 32GB config is ideal for running MATLAB, VS Code, Docker, and a ton of browser tabs at the same time. What I liked: • Top-tier performance in a truly portable body. • Gorgeous OLED with 120 Hz refresh — easy on the eyes. • Thoughtful I/O (HDMI, USB-A, USB4, PD, microSD). • Excellent build quality, keyboard, and trackpad. What could be better • Battery life is good but not exceptional — long simulation sessions will need a charger. • Fans can get loud under heavy load (expected for this much power in 14”). • OLED brightness is great indoors but not ideal in direct sunlight. • The GPU is slightly power-limited compared to the same chip in larger laptops. Verdict for engineering students: The 2025 Zephyrus G14 (32GB / RTX 5070 Ti) nails the balance engineering students need: workstation-class performance, CUDA for compute, a gorgeous OLED display, and a truly portable chassis with all the ports you’ll actually use. If you want one laptop for CAD, coding, simulations, and gaming — and you value portability as much as raw performance — this is the best 14-inch option of 2025.

For the last year I have been using the ROG Zephyrus G16, and I have absolutely loved it. It quickly became one of my favorite devices that I have used in the last few years. The build quality is phenomenal, the performance blows many other laptops away, especially in this form factor. Honestly, it had been my go-to device to manage just about everything, whether it be for work of fun. I carried the G16 with me daily back and forth to work and back for since it released a years ago. When I saw the new G14 I thought this might be exactly what I wanted, the only negative thing I could say about the G16 (and it’s a minor, personal issue) is that it is a tad too bulky to be commuting with it daily. The G14 is my sweet spot for laptop size. It is so compact. I have fallen in love with the G14 over the last week or so that I have been using it. If you have ever used the G16, it is honestly about the same in every regard except for the size. The G14 still retains the great build quality, same great aluminum chassis, same great keyboard and large trackpad, and even still best-in-class speakers. Performance is still what you would expect from a ROG Zephyrus running 32GB of RAM, a RTX 5070 Ti, and an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370. No matter what task or game I throw at this it handles it with no issue. Moving around numerous tabs in Chrome and apps is no issue. In general, the system just runs smoothly and flows between windows with no hiccups. I’ve been playing some of the newer AAA games that have launched recently and this G14 has been able to handle it with no problems. Doom: Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 are all able to run smoothly with beautiful graphics. The screen on this G14 is gorgeous and those games really shine on here. I haven’t noticed drops in frames, load times are minimal. Even in Doom, where everything moves so fast, nothing every pulls you out of the immersion. I won’t get into the technical, just know that this laptop will not disappoint in gaming. Even older games like WoW, Sifu, Fortnite, Diablo, Path of Exile, etc; they all run generally at Max or close to max visual settings at a nice stable framerate. Fan noise and thermals are tolerable as long as you are not trying to use this on your lap while you game. The top part of the base near the screen does get quite hot, especially when really using the graphics card in high end games, but expected for a gaming laptop. Fans are never even noticeable unless you again playing AAA games, then the fans are definitely noticeable unless you wear headphones or have a nice sound system to go with this. Not recommended to game on if you trying to be quiet, say in the same room as your sleeping partner. Again, thermal and fan noise are just part of what to expect when using a gaming laptop. I do love that I can hardly notice the fans when not gaming. This is going to sound kinda crazy when talking about a top-end gaming laptop, but one of my favorite things about it is how great it is to use for work and everyday things. The gorgeous screen, perfect size, and superior thermals make this such a joy to use. The keyboard is amazing, the trackpad feels great to use. I never notice the fans when I am doing day to day things. I’ve used it for hours at a time on my lap or laying in bed and never felt it heating up my lap. Battery is also very respectable for a system this powerful. I’ve binged watched shows for hours and worked on projects for work without feeling anxiety about my battery giving out. I was using a M4 MacBook Pro last year and the G14 is the closest thing to getting that same felling while using the MacBook. Everything feels so nice and well thought out. If you have made it this far in this length review, you already know I am going to highly recommend the G14, it is the perfect laptop for me. I can play any game I want, it handles anything I need to do for work, it is so light and compact that commuting with it is not an issue, and the build quality is phenomenal. One last thing; everything about this is amazing, but one thing I feel like I didn’t give enough time is the sound. I haven’t really even used my Bluetooth speaker since I started using the G14. The speakers on this laptop are so great. Volume gets so low, I normally keep it between 10-25. The sound is so clear and crisp. Music sounds great, movies feel very immersive as do games. Honestly, this is an all-around excellent device. The only thing I would change is to add a larger SSD. It comes with a 1TB and I might end up upgrading that later on, but that is a small issue. This would be a great graduation gift for your college bound gamer. Easy enough to carry to classes with great battery life, and enough power to handle any games they want to play.

Compact powerhouse – This 14″ OLED gaming laptop impresses with its blend of portability and performance, powered by an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU and a beefy RTX 5070 Ti (12 GB GDDR7) GPU. Brilliant display – The crisp 3K (2880×1800) OLED panel with 120 Hz refresh, 0.2 ms response time, 100% DCI-P3, and Dolby Vision offers stunning visuals for both gaming and content creation. Gaming performance – With DLSS 4 and frame generation, the RTX 5070 Ti delivers high frame rates even in demanding titles. Thermals & noise – While impressive in a compact chassis, the G14 does run warm and gets noticeably loud under load, with heat felt across the keyboard and palm rest. Verdict – A rare 14-inch gaming laptop that delivers desktop-class performance. Just be ready for some heat and fan noise. Perfect for those prioritizing power and portability in one sleek, stylish package.

I started out building computers way back in the nineties. One thing that has always been consistent for my builds, has been ASUS motherboards. I have had the pleasure of watching ASUS grow into the industry leading company that they are today. The new ROG G14 is no exception. While nothing is ever “perfect,” the G14 gets extremely close in the mobile computing tech space. From its premium build quality, to its performance, and unbelievably excellent display, the ASUS ROG G14 just might be the perfect compact daily driver on the market today. — BUILD — The all aluminum chassis and white color screams elegance while feeling and looking premium in every way possible. Add in the new customizable LED lighting on the lid and you have a mobile computing package that wants to be seen. The keys have a great tactile response and are easy on the fingers. As comfortable as they may be, I do have a small issue with the backlighting of the keys. While it is great that you can customize the color and effect in the included ASUS Armory Crate software, there is a problem with the backlighting of the corners of the keys where the F keys and smaller symbols are displayed. Some of them are illuminated more than others, but most are pretty dull/dark and are hard to read (see photo). While this is a pretty small issue, I do expect ASUS to do better in this area, and care should be taken upon updating for the next release. — DISPLAY — I have to admit, as a professional photographer and videographer by day, and gamer by night, the display is and will always be one of the biggest deciding factors for me when selecting a laptop, or stand alone monitor. Gaming laptops, until recently, have always seemed to be stuck at 1080, and that is simply unacceptable for today's standards. Now that companies like ASUS are finally giving us higher resolution monitors, like the beautiful 3K display included on this computer, we can finally start using these gaming marketed laptops for multi use scenarios, including photo and video editing. Gaming laptops have (mostly) always had the processors and RAM to handle video editing, so now that we have the beautiful 3K display, we are all set to be productive and to also unwind with our favorite top tier games all on the same computer wherever we may be. This display is sharp, vibrant, and very bright. Text is super clear, which is a very welcome addition to Windows based computers. Whites are bright, blacks are deep. It is simply stunning to look at, whether you are gaming, editing, or watching movies. I can’t say enough good things about it. Thank you, ASUS! — PERFORMANCE — Having 32GB of RAM on this model standard, makes this machine capable of everything I need a computer to do right out of the box. This includes everything I mentioned previously, such as photo and video editing, general daily use, and of course, gaming. I have tried several titles in the last week, including the newly remastered Oblivion, the ambitious and fun Avowed, and one of my all time favorites, Diablo IV. The ROG G14 hasn’t had so much as a single hiccup loading or playing any of these excellent games, and for me, that is all I can ask. The AMD Ryzen 9, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, and the excellent 120Hz display all come together in unison to create a more than capable and compelling mobile computing powerhouse. If there was one thing I could comment on that is consistent with any gaming laptop I have had in the past, is the fact that it does get a little warm to the touch when playing graphically intense games. Rest assured, gaming laptops have always been this way, and are designed to be able to handle the heat appropriately. Ultimately, if I can take a laptop wherever I want to go and work, or play top tier games all on the same computer, I am one happy camper. — SOUND — Normally, laptop speakers are one of the most overlooked areas in development, but I am happy to report that ASUS must have listened, and have included a set of speakers that are among the loudest, and best sounding I have ever had on any laptop I have ever owned. Another thank you, ASUS! All of that said, I do use Bluetooth over the ear headphones most of the time, but the fact that these speakers do sound great is certainly worth mentioning for those that may prefer using them as opposed to tuning out of your surroundings completely. — PORTS — All of the usual suspects are present, including HDMI, USB-A, USB-C (with Display Port support and power delivery), a 3.5mm micro headphone/mic combo jack, and a micro SD card reader. While I appreciate the ports provided, I would like to see at least one more USB-C port, and a full size SD card reader instead of the micro SD card reader. Again, this is me talking as a photographer, and videographer. I think most users, if given the choice, would definitely opt for a full size SD card reader. You could then simply use an adapter to use a micro SD card. Not as easy the other way around. Are you listening, ASUS?! — BATTERY — I haven’t had the chance to fully test the battery in the short time I have had the computer, but I did run it on battery at home to see what it could handle while gaming. It seems to be on par with any other gaming laptop I have had in the past, or even marginally better considering this is the 14” model. I rarely have the need to use the computer on battery power alone, as I have battery packs that I can take with me on the road if needed. — WEBCAM — This model has a 1080 webcam built in. I honestly do not use these very often, and would prefer that ASUS would give us the option to close the iris with a slider like other models do. — IN CONCLUSION — As previously mentioned, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 is a highly capable laptop that tackles the high demanding applications I use daily with ease. The few issues I mentioned, key backlighting, SD card slot, and heat under intense use, are minor in the grand scope of what you get with this computer. If you want a computer that really does it all, and does it all well, I can highly recommend the ASUS Rog Zephyrus G14.

What makes this laptop different from all the other gaming laptops recently released? I hope to bring some clarity to this question with my review. Currently, the number of 2025 model year gaming laptops containing a NVIDIA RTX 5000 series graphics card has increased considerably now that the entry level 5060 cards have hit the market. Keeping this in mind, it’s important to note that this laptop, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, contains a 5070 TI series graphics card. Essentially, this card is a step up from the entry level 5060 cards. So, it not only has a stronger GPU with more processing power, but more importantly, it comes with more video memory (VRAM). And in this case, the RTX 5070 TI has 12 GB of VRAM versus the 5060’s 8 GB. The additional video memory, in my opinion, is going to make a significant difference when playing the latest AAA games, such as Cyberpunk 2077 or Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. These games are so complex and large in size that the more video memory your graphics card comes with, the better the games look and play. In addition to the better graphics card, this laptop comes with 32 GB of standard memory. Again, the more memory the better, especially if you want to future proof your laptop. Like I mentioned earlier, games and programs are becoming more demanding, and soon 32 GB will be the recommended amount of system memory for any gaming PC. Still, the specs discussed so far do not describe the uniqueness of this laptop. A better graphics card and a lot of memory can be found in many of the other gaming laptops on sale at Best Buy. However, it is very unique that these and other specs are housed in a laptop as light and portable as this one. Weighing only 3.46 pounds, it’s easy to carry anywhere. A laptop such as this would be perfect for someone who needs the power of a gaming pc but also needs something light, thin, and easy to transport. On top of this, the quality and look is very high end. The body is made from aluminum and has the look and feel comparable to a MacBook Pro. And more importantly, the size and aesthetics do not affect the laptop’s performance. Given its size, I was curious to see how well it would perform in games. I mention size because sometimes a smaller chassis can limit the amount of airflow and cooling on inside components. However, the G14 is a solid performer. To illustrate this, I tested this gaming laptop against two other gaming laptops I own. The first one is an RTX 4060 with 8 GB of VRAM paired with a 13th generation Intel Core i7 13700HX processor with 16 GB of system RAM. The other gaming laptop has a beastly RTX 4090 with 32 GB of RAM paired with a 14th generation Intel Core Ultra 9 185H. Of course, this is not an apple-to-apple comparison, but it’s what I currently own. And it may allow someone who is looking to upgrade from a similar system a chance to see differences in frames per second (FPS). To begin, I put each laptop through Unigine’s SuperPosition benchmark (see images). The new Zephyrus G14 scored 8921 with an average frame rate of 67 and a minimum of 53. I tested all three laptops using the same 1080p Extreme graphics settings. Also, each laptop had its highest performance mode turned on. Back to the comparison, the more powerful older laptop with the RTX 4090 scored 9229 with an average frame rate of 69 and a minimum of 47. And the RTX 4070 laptop scored 5701 with an average frame rate of 43 and a minimum of 37. So, compared to the older 4070 laptop, this 5070 TI system doubles its score and improves its FPS by 56%. When compared to the 4090 laptop, the G14 came close to the 4090’s score and was only off by a couple of FPS. In real world gaming though, the newer 5070 card on this G14 will allow up to 4 times multi frame generation (MFG), while the older 4090 is only capable of 2 times MFG. Depending on the game, this may allow for higher FPS mainly because of the latest MFG technology available in the newer NVIDIA RTX 5000 series graphic cards. The next game I used to compare the laptops was the new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle release (see images). If there ever is a game that needs a lot of video RAM, then this one is it. There is so much scenery, sunlight, and various other details, the game benefits from as having the data stored on the graphic card’s faster video RAM versus needing to get it from the main hard drive, or solid-state drive (SSD) as is the case with these laptops. This is where the older 4090 with 32 GB of VRAM helps. But the 5070 TI’s 12 GB of VRAM is still a good amount. As you’ll see in the results, the 4090 still performs better, but the 5070 TI is still capable of generating a good frame rate (anything above 60 FPS). Both laptops were tested using the following settings in the game: 1080p, all the graphic quality settings set to high, Ray Tracing (RT) on Medium, DLSS turned on using the Quality setting, and MFG of 2 time for the 4090 and 4 times for the 5070 TI. As seen in the images, the 4090 was getting FPS in the 100 range. And the 5070 TI was getting FPS in the mid-70s. So, in this case, of course the 4090 outperformed the 5070, but it’s important to keep in mind the cost of each laptop. The 4090 would easily be twice as much as the 5070 TI at launch. And it is the difference in cost that makes this G14 laptop stand out from the many other gaming laptops available today. The cost of this laptop is still within a reasonable amount of the lower-level RTX 5060 gaming PCs. Again, the benefit of this laptop is if someone wants a better graphics card with more available video RAM then the entry level 5060s. Not only does the 5070 TI graphics card have more VRAM, but it is also a stronger video card with more CUDA cores, RT cores, and Tensor cores than the 5060. Simple put, you’ll get a stronger gaming PC in the G14 without breaking the bank. However, you’ll also want to consider your other needs. Like, are you wanting a light and portable gaming PC? Is the premium build and look important to you? Will a 14-inch screen work for you? Will you be doing any creative work on this laptop? Regarding the last question, it is worth mentioning that the OLED screen is amazing. Overall, this laptop’s build and look is impressive. And for those still reading my review, I want to mention that as for the 4070 laptop used in my comparison above, it was not even able to play the Indiana Jones and the Great Circle game using the same settings that the 4090 and the 5070 TI were tested under. Many of the visual features were turned off or toned down for the older 4070. The game still played well with good FPS, but the graphics were pretty basic compared to output of this G14 gaming laptop. The only negative I have with this laptop is the sensitivity of the touchpad. I think because of its large size, my hands touch it a lot while typing. This can get annoying when you’re trying to type and the cursor is moving to different places. I guess I’ll just have to get use to it and hope it become less of a distraction over time. But really, everything else about this laptop is topnotch. It truly is a premium machine.
