Good machine
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall very happy with this purchase. I play games and it works well for that. It’s speedy and the games work well. My one beef is that the fingerprint sensor absolutely does not work…there is a glitch. I just don’t want to be bothered trying to download this & that to fix it, so use my pin. Also keep in mind that it wants you to use (or create) a Microsoft account when you first get started…completely separate from an ASUS account. I play Vikings:War of Clans and can get 2+ hours of playing just on the battery, which is excellent.

Actually good
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So far, this laptop has been amazing. Hinges haven't busted, memory hasn't been issue. Updates like it's supposed and has lasted more then 6 months. A complete upgrade from almost everything else BB sells.

Great Buy
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great for what I purchased it for. Video editing. I have three boys who play youth football and I bought this computer in hopes of being able to churn out as much game film as I can. My regular HP laptop kept on crashing and when it was not, the upload time was insane. This ASUS is a dream. It is leaps and bounds faster, more efficient, and very sleek. I recommend this to anyone looking for better performance. Only thing bad about it is the lack of an SD slot.

Excellent at price point - recommended
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Previously, I have tried a number of Asus gaming laptops. They offer quite a bit of hardware for the price. However, I found the screens to have varying levels of unpleasant greenish / reddish screen coloration, and just about impossible to override. Even after setting Windows color spectrum to achieve reasonable white balance, the Armoury Crate, Asus optimization, and Aura, working somehow together, would put color back to the default greenish tint the manufacturers feel is a proper RGB balance. Disabling these would also disable a number of keyboard functions as well. However, decided to give it one more try, and am very pleasantly surprised! First, this 14" laptop has only white back light on the keyboard, so not dealing with Aura effects. Then I used Windows color calibration tool to balance red, green, blue for more accurate white, and set as "default" and so far it has "stuck"! The screen has good color rendition, and sharp - great for movies or games. Also, the screen is incredibly bright - I have brightness at about 50% for in home use. As far as performance, it has a Ryzen 8 core/16 thread processor - that I have found outperforms Intel. Along with the processor, the 4Gb Nvidia graphics and 16gb ram allow this to run games such as Doom Ultimate smoothly. As mentioned, the keyboard has back light settings of off, plus 3 levels of lighting - excellent for low light areas. I did not notice any flex at palm rests or keyboard. However, some of the keys seemed a little cheap with some slight "clacking". Overall though, the key travel and response was good. Sound through the onboard speakers is reasonable for a laptop - not too tinny, and adequate volume. The touch pad is very smooth, with accurate scrolling and positive right / left click. But all is not perfect. There are a few shortcomings..... Not sure why the power connector is in the middle of the left side, would have been much better to locate it toward the back. Adding the touch function to the screen would have been nice..... Most importantly though, is the omission of a micro SD card slot for extra storage. All in all, at the price point, with excellent performance, bright colorful display, this is an excellent choice. Boots fast (15 seconds) runs programs well, runs games, surfing etc. - all at a reasonable price.

The Best $1000 Laptop for a Gamer/Coder on the Go
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the past year, I've dealt with exclusively using a desktop, but now that the world is opening up again, I needed a laptop for use on the go. However, my laptop needs are a bit more particular than the average user, as I not only game, but code on the go. I also didn't want a laptop that cost more than $1500, as my previous laptops (Dell XPS 15 and Apple Macbook Pro) were either stolen (the Dell) or broke due to shoddy motherboard soldering out-of-warranty (the Macbook Pro). After almost a month of use, here are the pros and cons of this laptop, based on my experience: Pros: ------- + Well-built, sturdy construction + Excellent keyboard (comfortable for long typing sessions, good layout, and has multiple back-lighting settings--I actually prefer this keyboard for long typing sessions over an Apple keyboard) + Good active cooling (imperative for coding or gaming on a laptop, the laptop has never gotten too hot, and feels pleasant to handle at its toastiest) + Decent-quality screen (14-inch, 1920 x 1080px IPS LCD screen, 60 Hz, 16:9 aspect ratio, non-touch, matte, ActiveSync. I prefer non-touch screens, as touching the screen will dirty it. Also, according to Tom's Guide, the screen has an above-average top brightness of 323 nits, which is perfect for using the computer outdoors or in bright areas. Tom's Guide also says that the screen accurately reproduces 117% of the sRGB color gamut, which means that colors look great compared to many other laptop screens) + Excellent battery life (11 hours if you're not doing anything processor-intensive, long charging cable, and options to keep the battery charge capped at 60% if you don't want the Lithium Ion battery to degrade while it's plugged in) + Decently powerful CPU & GPU for most use cases (if you need anything more powerful than the AMD Ryzen 7 and Nvidia GTX 1650 for either gaming or coding, I'd recommend building a desktop or building/renting a server with the specs you need rather than buying a laptop, especially a laptop of this small size) + 16GB RAM (again, if you need anything more than this for either gaming or coding, build a desktop or build/rent a server to use instead) + Extremely portable (14-inch screen size and less than 4lbs in weight! This computer is so lightweight and easy to transport, while still being sturdily-constructed) + Design (I dislike computers with either cheap-looking designs or aggressive stereotypical "gamer" designs. This computer strikes the right balance, with a minimal-looking design, modern yet simple color palette, and the option to customize the lighting on the lid's LED matrix. I don't use the lid's LED matrix personally, but many people will) + Price (this computer is super cheap for the quality and the specs!) Cons: -------- - No built-in webcam (bad if you use a webcam regularly, as you'll need to purchase an external webcam. Not an issue for me, as I have my own high-quality external webcam, but this will be an issue for most users) - The screen refresh rate is ONLY 60hz (For most users, this won't be an issue--only people who don't have external screens and who will stare at this screen without breaks for 6+ hours on end will begin to have eye strain with this screen. I have external screens and computer glasses, and I regularly look away from my screen, so this doesn't bother me, but it may bother other power-users) In conclusion, this laptop is as close to perfect for my needs (coding and gaming on-the-go) as a laptop of this size and price point can possibly be, and I am extremely pleased with my purchase. If you are a user similar to me, and are aware of the two potential cons of the laptop and are willing to work around/with them, then you will love this laptop as well. My Final Score: 9.5/10
