The ASUS ROG G16 for 2024 has an all-new design that is sure to turn heads. Immediately, the sleek all Premium Aluminum CNC Unibody chassis will catch your eye. When Asus stated they were making the all new G16 thin, they were not kidding. It's .59" thin and only weighs 4.09lbs. Can you say gamer MacBook Pro, LOL. The new G16 is packing the all-new AI Powered Intel Meteor Lake Ultra 9 185H which is one mean processor. From its powerful 6 performance cores, 8 efficiency cores and 2 low power efficiency cores, you are sure to have all the gaming and number crunching power at your fingertips. Now let's talk about gaming! The G16 is outfitted with an Nvidia RTX 4070 GPU with 8 GB of GDDR6 Vram for all your graphics goodness. The RTX4070 has a TGP of 115w, which is a slight decrease from last year's model, however you are still getting the same raw performance from a slightly lower wattage. Less watts means less heat. More to come on that subject. Storage is handled by a Western Digital SN560 NVMe 1TB SSD drive that has pretty good read and write speeds. There's a second PCIe 4.0 NVMe Slot for expansion onboard. The G16 is configured with 16GB of soldered on LPPDR5X Ram running at 7467MHZ. Is 16GB of ram enough for today's demanding games or applications? This will depend on what you are doing with the laptop. For the long haul, no it's probably not enough, however the fact that the ram is running at such an extremely high MHz means very smooth operations when needed. The display is where this laptop shines! The 240HZ 16" QHD 2560 x 1600 OLED screen is a thing of beauty! From the uber rich blacks to the stunning colors the display can produce, you are in for a treat when viewing your favorite media content or playing games. On the back of the display, are the all-new Slash Lighting effects. You can set all sorts of different lighting scenarios in Armory Crate. For me, it's ok, not my cup of tea type of thing so I just turn it off. Rounding out the laptop are the 6 Dolby Atmos Speakers that have been much improved from last year's model. The sound is much more balanced, and the lows are very pronounced. Overall, the new speakers sound fantastic. Just remember to tweak the Dolby Atmos settings to your liking. Out of the box, the experience was a mixed bag. Windows setup went smooth as expected however, going into the My Asus and ROG Armory Crate apps was not smooth. It took several tries to get the My Asus app to recognize the laptop had been registered and prompted to do so more times than I would like. Opening Armory Crate, I immediately had a prompt indicating that Windows is now controlling the dynamic lighting. I would have rather been given a choice on this. None of the lighting options are enabled unless you disable the Windows Dynamic Lighting Control. Within 2 days of using the laptop I started to notice that the speakers were sounding garbled and distorted on low volume. Messing with the Dolby Atmos Settings only made matters worse. I decided to give the Cloud Recovery Option a try after reading a Reddit Post on issues with the ROG Series of Laptops. This process is made easy by being built into the bios now, which is super handy when you want to add a bigger SSD and not worry about having to clone the drive. Keep in mind, Cloud Recovery will require a network connection, wireless or ethernet and be prepared for a 1–2-hour process depending on your network speeds. After a full cloud recovery was performed, I was amazed at how much better, quieter and less warm the laptop gets. The laptop has performed amazingly well and runs as I would expect for such a high-end spec'd laptop. Overall, I am very pleased with this new ASUS ROG 16 Gaming laptop, just had to tweak a bit to get it to run more efficiently and produce less heat.

Good hardware, runs hella hot, and also has a bunch of useless software that will switch GPU screen mid game. It peaves me off cause the hardware is ok but then while I'm in the middle of a task the screen goes black and switches GPU. I feel like at the price I shouldn't have to go through hoops to turn off useless features and Remove annoying bloatware.

      Dear Butterballs,

      Thank you for your comment.

We do understand your concern about thermal issues. It is normal for laptop, with the same hardware configuration and regardless of the manufacturer, to generate more heat than normal while under heavy load especially during gaming, WINDOWS Update and antivirus scan. When system resource utilization is high, this will generate more heat than normal and tends to trigger the fan to spin at full throttle. Please ensure the air ventilations are free from obstructions in order to have an efficient air flow for better heat dissipation. While gaming, please ensure no resource hungry applications are running in the background, this will definitely spike the temperature. The heat or temperature does decreases or normalizes once system resource utilization goes down.

Beautiful screen powerful hardware, just couldn’t run anything without stuttering. I tried everything to make this run, lowered the resolution to 1080 on low settings and it would still drop to 13 fps every time I shot something in halo. Days later I learned that the WiFi chip in the laptop is so bad that it doesn’t that.

Brilliant gaming laptop, but wish it had 32GB RAM

The Asus ROG Zephyr G16 is an absolutely fantastic all-around laptop for gaming and content creation, marred only by its non-upgradeable RAM. Every other aspect of this machine provides a top notch experience, crowned by the gorgeous QHD+ OLED screen. I don’t think the 16GB of (thankfully fast) RAM will affect gaming (at least not before the RTX 4070 is probably made obsolete), but it does put a cap on its capabilities for content creation. This laptop, with 32GB of RAM, would be basically flawless. The chassis is aluminum and exudes a quality feel. It’s very thin, at less than an inch thick. Such thinness precludes an ethernet port, but the ports on offer are generous enough: HDMI, two USB Type A, and 2 Type C along with an SD card reader. The backlit keyboard is very nice and has a good feel, but it does not have a number pad. Predictably, given the high end hardware under the hood, the chassis can get rather warm under load, especially the metal area just above the keyboard, which can get downright hot. I didn’t notice the keyboard becoming uncomfortable however. Below the keyboard is a truly gargantuan trackpad that’s nicely responsive. There is ample power on tap with the hardware. As said before, the 16GB of RAM is at least fast, of the LPDDR5X variety, with Samsung memory chips in mine. The CPU is the Intel Core Ultra 9 185H, which marks a change in Intel’s naming scheme after over a decade of the Core i-series. This Meteor Lake chip features a heterogeneous architecture with 6 performance cores that boost up to 5.1Ghz while hyperthreading, 8 efficient cores, and 2 low power efficient cores, addressing 22 total threads. Meteor Lake also features Intel’s Neural Processing Units for AI acceleration tasks. Storage is provided by a 1TB Western Digital SN560 SSD, which in my benchmarking hit 5018 MB/s in sequential read and 3347 MB/s in sequential writes. In performance mode, which is one step below the maximum Turbo power setting (which unfortunately, if understandably, is distractingly loud with the fans), I got a score of 16541. That’s higher than a AMD Threadripper 1950X, which was a HEDT/workstation processor from 2017. Quite amazing to see that much power squeezed into a less than inch thick chassis! Graphics are switchable between the Xe onboard graphics on the Intel chip (for integrated graphics, it’s no slouch itself) or the Nvidia RTX 4070. The specs list this as having a TGP of 115W, which is impressive for such a thin chassis, but to get that much out of it you’ll have to be very tolerant of fan noise using the Turbo preset. Far more tolerable is the one step down performance mode, in which the fans are clearly on but are not distracting, especially if you have this laptop’s very excellent speakers turned up. The RTX 4070 has 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM, which is the minimum I would consider in a GPU in 2024. Somewhat disappointingly, the 4070’s VRAM does run at a higher clock rate vs. the previous generation mobile RTX 3070, but the memory bus has been halved to 128-bit, so memory bandwidth is actually less than the previous generation. Performance is still up overall though, and you do get the benefits of the latest Nvidia technologies like DLSS 3 and frame generation. Overall, however, this GPU should be able to push most games at native resolution, with perhaps more demanding titles either needing a drop to 1200p or to engage to DLSS if there’s heavy ray tracing involved. Personally, I think of DLSS as “free” performance because in Quality mode I cannot typically see any difference in image quality. I did run into some difficulty with benchmarking: out of the box, the latest update of Steam caused a problem with the automatic GPU switching between the integrated and discrete graphics. Thankfully, Nvidia has released an updated driver that addresses the issue. I used the built-in benchmark tool in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla to test first. This is an AMD-sponsored title, so no DLSS, but it does have AMD’s open standard FSR available as an upscale. The first round I tested at 2560x1600 resolution, with a 100% render scale, using the ultra high preset with no adaptive quality or FSR, and the distractingly loud Turbo preset. I averaged 77fps, with 1% lows of 40fps. Engaging FSR Ultra Quality boosted the average to 100fps with 1% lows improved to 51fps, so very playable. As previously said, I found the Turbo mode to be way too loud, though I am glad it’s available if I didn’t care or was using headphones. Dropping to performance mode with no FSR yields 69fps on average, and engaging FSR brings it back up to 88fps. If the game is playable in performance mode, I highly recommend that. Switching to Forza Horizon 5, using the Extreme preset (which includes ray tracing set to high), DLSS Quality with frame generation produced a very playable 86fps at the native QHD+ resolution. In Red Dead Redemption, the 4070 was good for 57fps without upscaling and 66fps with DLSS Quality. (All Forza and Red Dead Redemption benchmarks were done in Performance mode.) All of this graphical goodness looked wonderful on the spacious 16” OLED screen. It doesn’t get spectacularly bright, but the infinite contrast and wide color gamut make it really pop. It has a 240Hz refresh rate as well, so if you want to competitively game at low resolution/high frame rates, it has capability as well. It also supports Nvidia’s G-Sync variable refresh rate technology. Summing up, this is one seriously fine piece of hardware. My only complaint, and it’s not an insignificant one if your usage intentions are on the content creation side of things, is the fixed 16GB of RAM. If you’re gaming focused, I don’t think this will be an issue until such a time the other hardware itself is lagging too. Absolutely peak performance, via Turbo mode, I feel most will find too loud, but performance mode sacrifices little for much improved acoustics. I do prefer the option to crank things up if I choose, versus the vendor deciding to cap the capabilities. The chassis is very well-made and premium feeling, the keyboard and trackpad are quite nice, and the screen is absolutely top-notch. You can hardly ask for more CPU power than what’s on tap here, and the RTX 4070 is adequate to drive most games at the screen’s native resolution. An excellent PC overall.

Short but sweet - it's a beautifully designed, powerful gaming laptop but realize that the RAM this comes with is the RAM this is stuck with. At least you can throw in a second SSD should you want additional storage. Build quality is excellent, almost like it came from a certain orchard. The keyboard feel is amazing, better than any laptop I've ever used outside those that you have to think about. OLED - enough said. Unboxing, first impressions, and initial setup: First thing is the packaging feels like any other Asus laptop. While the ROG Zepherus G16 comes in a box within this box similar to what your high-end smartphone comes in, you have to get through the brown cardboard first. I feel like this takes away from the experience of opening it up. The laptop is solidly built. The body is milled from a single piece of aluminum, the way premium laptops should be made. The bottom is one large set of vents, which is a way to keep things cool. The dark grey color looks nice, and where the light stripe is looks like a terrific accent, even when off. Power it on that you'll be greeted by the sound of the G16 booting, which is the sound of a sword being drawn. I'm a fan of this. Also, the contrast between the foreground and background is startling if you've never seen an OLED larger than your smartphone. This laptop comes with Windows 11 Home Edition. While there are ways to get around making a Microsoft account, plan on doing so if you haven't already. For what it costs, however, it should have with Windows 11 Pro. The best part of the OOB experience is that McAfee doesn't come installed by default. That was enough to bring back one of the stars taken away from the upgradeability thing (more on that later). Usage: The Core Ultra 9-185H processor is extremely snappy and responsive. Windows boots fast and Windows updates very quickly. The SSD in this system isn't the fastest thing out there, but has adequate performance for any game you can throw at this machine. The RTX 4070 Mobile is a capable GPU, even with only 8GB of memory. Performance feels similar to the desktop RTX 4060Ti when turned all the way up to its 115-watt TDP mode. The Core Ultra 9-185H also has integrated Arc graphics that perform very similarly to the Arc A380, which is terrific for encoding and even decent for low-setting gaming. Everyday usage for productivity is great. Internet browsing is only slowed by your WiFi connection. Office apps do whatever you need them to instantly. Most games run without issues. While some modern titles will only allow for medium graphical settings because of how much memory they need for the GPU, almost everything else that can run on an 8GB video card will run at high, settings natively. On the 2560x1600 display, graphics look beautiful. Thanks to the display being OLED, the contrast is deep and colors are very rich. For video editing, the combination of the RTX 4070 and Arc graphics makes for a powerhouse. The RTX chip is great for rendering out graphics while the Arc is very efficient at rendering video. The G16 comes with a proprietary 240-watt charger. It's also compatible with up to 100 watts of USB-PD charging, which I confirmed for myself with a third-party adapter and a USB-PD cable rated for 240 watts each. You'll also find USB-A and USB-C ports on both sides of the laptop, HDMI and headphone on the left side, and a SD card slot on the right side. If you're familiar with Asus ArmoryCrate, that's the software used here to control the keyboard lighting, update the firmware/BIOS, and control the Slash Lighting, which is a very unique feature in that it's a multi-zone light strip that can be set to one of several animated presets. It does only glow white, however. Other Asus-branded peripherals can be controlled with this software, too. Upgradeability: 2 SSD slots are a terrific way to make sure you don't run out of storage, especially with the price of high-capacity SSDs dropping. The included SSD is an adequate performer, with 5000 MBPS reads and 3000 MBPS writes. it does support PCIE 4 aand PCIE 5 SSDs, but I would stay away from high performance drives in a laptop because of heat and power concerns. the WiFi card is also easily accessible with the bottom open and uses the standard form factor. As WiFi versions improve, it's good to know you can upgrade. However, the RAM is soldered into the machine. You can't just go buy a DDR5 memory kit to upgrade from 16GB. Gaming laptops should have upgradeable memory. I would have even given up one of the SSD slots for this. Closing: This is almost a perfect laptop. Thin, light, powerful. Then you find out that even though you can add storage, you can't add RAM. While it's a good premium laptop for those looking for something thin, stylish, powerful, and not from the orchard, it's not something I can recommend to the core audience Asus was looking at selling this to, as 16GB will be less than the minimum spec you'll want for gaming. It is a solid laptop though. My recommendation is for those that aren't looking at this as a hardcore PC gamer. And for the price, it should come with Windows 11 Pro. If you're a gamer who really does want a Zephyrus laptop, I'd recommend spending a little more on one of the models with 32GB of RAM. Yes, it's going to cost more, but you'll get more enjoyment over the years out of one of those models.

It's a good laptop as far as design, style, and crisp graphics but it seemed like it was constantly needing to download updates which kept me from using the laptop very much. Ultimately, I decided to return it.

This is a super-premium looking laptop that admirably handles just about any task that I throw at it. Battery life is excellent. When used for just general web browsing and light media consumption, the laptop lasts for hours. The screen is gorgeous. It’s truly one of the best that I’ve ever seen. The contrast is just incredible. Darker games look incredibly vivid on this display. The speakers are quite loud and clear. Watching videos and listening to music on this laptop is an absolute joy. The sound fills the room quite well on max volume. The trackpad is enormous. I can’t say that I’ve ever used one that’s this large before. It seems to do a surprisingly good job with palm rejection given its size. The laptop is speedy and performs beautifully. I can play most of my older titles with max graphical settings. Build quality is phenomenal. This laptop “feels” like a premium device. My only minor complaint is that ASUS strayed from the “gamer aesthetic” quite a bit on this device and instead went with a “classy aesthetic.” RGB lighting is minimal, and the laptop is almost “understated” in its appearance. This is great if you’re planning on using this laptop in the classroom or office, but it’s a little bit of a letdown if you’re looking to “wow” your friends at a LAN party. Storage . . . well . . . storage is always an issue with gaming laptops. The laptop comes with a generous 1TB of storage (OS recognizes 926GB out of the box), and there is a full-size SD card slot for additional expansion. By default, this is more than enough storage for a couple newer games and a half dozen or so older games. The laptop has a generous assortment of ports. I appreciate the inclusion of a full-size HDMI port as my TV only has HDMI ports and I haven’t invested in a full-set of HDMI to USB-C cables yet. If you’re looking for a great gaming machine that just screams quality, then this is the laptop for you.

Bought this to play games. So far haven't been able to run anything smoothly. Also I was told by Best Buy that I could install extra RAM but come to find out no matter how much you install the CPU caps it at 16gb. Terrible purchase and expensive.

The 2024 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G16 is another great entry in the Zephyrus line. Build and performance are what one expects from the line and it only has one glaring Achilles heel. Pros: - Outstanding WOLED screen. Bright, outstanding contrast, and super fast 240hz refresh rate. Resolution is a great balance for all tasks and 16:10 aspect ratio is rare for laptops these days. - RTX 4070 while a mobile part still brings some solid performance to the table. Testing in Cyberpunk 2077 with DLSS, Frame Generation, and Path Tracing enabled hit ~60fps at the displays native 2560 x 1600 resolution. - The Core Ultra 9 185H is fast for gaming and day-to-day use. I did a quick Geekbench 6 compare against my M3 Max based MacBook Pro and unsurprisingly it is considerably slower (almost 35%). That said, gaming on a Mac is still a long way away from being truly usable so if that is important (which if you are looking at this machine it probably is) it is really only notable for comparison sake. At no point did I think the machine was slow. - The SSD is fast, but not necessarily world-class. The Western Digital SN560 is a pretty standard PCI-E 4.0 drive with average performance. I'm guessing battery life was the driver for the choice. - The WiFi 6E is fast. I have it connected to my WiFi 7 router and I am seeing speeds in excess of 1.4gbps. - Keyboard and trackpad are great. Great key feel and well lit. Trackpad is top-notch and responsive. - Overall build is solid and feels high-end. Even includes some lighting on the lid to give it a little extra character. The lighting is adjustable and can even be turned off if you are trying to maximize batter life. - Has IR camera for facial recognition using Windows Hello. Works great and had zero problems logging in. - Light on bloatware which is always nice. I didn't feel a compelling need to wipe the machine and start fresh. Cons: - It gets loud. Even a minor amount of stress on the processor and it goes into full blow dryer mode. - It gets HOT. This is a direct relationship to the loud. Coupled with the vents on the bottom of the chassis I don't recommend placing the machine on your lap for anything more than surfing the web. - Battery life isn't setting any records. On average I am seeing less than 5 hours with very casual, light loads. Gaming... forget about it. You might get an hour to and hour and a half depending on the game. While the machine isn't cheap, you do get a solid, gaming laptop for the money. You could certainly do worse and ASUS has done a great job yet again. Put this one on your short list if you are looking for a lightweight gaming notebook that won't make you feel embarrassed in a business meeting.
