Setup as wireless to wired bridge, it's awesome

I have been using Eero and Netgear Orbi mesh routers for years and they have been working, but if you need granularity and control over setting up your network, the Asus AiMesh system cannot be beat. The main wifi on my network is through the Asus ZenWifi ET12 system which is phenomenal. I purchased this to wirelessly bridge from those to my Apple TV, gaming system and a few other devices. I'm getting speeds over 800mb/s to my devices with this acting in bridge mode with very low latency. All that being said, it does take some knowledge of how you want to use your devices and if I wanted to extend my wireless with this, the speeds would be slightly slower than just the wireless to wired bridge because it would need to use part of the wireless bandwidth to rebroadcast rather than dedicated communication only with my main router. I have no doubt this would also be a solid router, the Asus WRT software is phenomenal and the capabilities with VPN including openVPN, Wireguard and others is outstanding.

    Built-in VPN Crashes Router

My last router was an ASUS RT-ARCH13. I used OpenVPN on it with TAP mode so I could access my home network remotely (remote desktop). I decided to upgrade the router because it's over 8 years old. Unfortunately, when I set up the OpenVPN (one of the built-in VPNs in the ASUS settings), it crashes every single time a client tries to make a connection. I've tried changes settings, yet it persists and I have duplicated the issue too even after exchanging for a new one. This was unacceptable to me because that VPN was one of the factors of purchasing it. While not everyone uses the feature, and it won't affect the majority of users, it is just a feature that is broken and yet to be fixed by ASUS as evident by online forums of multiple people having the same problem with THIS specific model. I have an ASUS RT-AX56U at my office, and the VPN on that never had any issues, so I will likely just get another one of that model for home use. Such a shame considering the strength of the WiFi is excellent, the design is cool, and the six ethernet ports of the AX86U model.

Buy this router instead of the Nighthawk

This router is great for gaming without breaking the bank. As soon as I installed this router I noticed better connectivity, both in speed and in range. The app that ASUS has for this router is FAR BETTER than the nighthawk app. I'm honestly glad my nighthawk router died. Definitely recommend this product.

Very good and speedy router. The setup was extremely easy including changing the SSID and passwords and updating the firmware. Hope to get a better life than past routers that failed after just two years.

Feature packed and advertised a a router that with fast WiFi speeds as well as "the winning choice" for mobile gaming. The problem with this router is that it's cumbersome to set up...especially when attempting to connect other routers to it and the mobile software that allows you to connect to the router and configure it is glitchy. I've spent numerous years in IT; I worked as an IT professional for at least 25 years and as recently as 2021. Of all of the networking equipment I've ever configured for myself or numerous clients over the years, I must admit - this is a problematic piece of gear. I purchased the hardware along with another compatible Asus Wi-Fi 6 router in Jan/Feb. One of the switch ports failed on this router in mid August; unheard of in my recent line of work. I do not recommend this gear, especially when considering the price point and the difficulty with setup/configuration as well as the reliability. While it's possible that the reliability issue is isolated to my piece of gear only, I'm not convinced that it is.

Super users friendly and so many features compared to the other routers I have owned. Well worth it and super easy to set up. The range is not as good as my last one but cover the whole house just has weak signal at the end of my driveway. 2000-2100 sqft house perfect for this size house.

Not suitable for TMHI (T-Mobile Home Internet

I was hoping to have guest WiFi that did not share my computer internet. I was hoping to get QOS and shaping for better performance. Unfortunately with T-Mobile Home Internet (TMHI) this only works as an access point. So why 2 stars instead of one? The response from the support was good. Unfortunately the info they had was only bad news -- that I should put my gateway into bridge mode. My gateway will not do that. But that should not have been a problem -- just double-nat. The performance hit would be minimal. But this would not work that way. I bought an older Netgear that is doing that for me now, but it lacks some of the features that I should have gotten from the ASUS.

      Dear ThomasT,

      Thank you for your comment.

We certainly understand your disappointment with the router and the inconvenience this may have caused if you are having issues setting up the router with T-Mobile Home Internet. This router does work with T-Mobile Home Internet as the main router, not only as an access point. To set it up, you need to disable the routing functions of the T-Mobile gateway. This router supports multiple SSID and you can setup a separate SSID for guest. You can configure QOS and for helpful tips please visit our Product Support page at:  https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1013333/ . Should you need further assistance with the product, please email me at [email protected] and I would be more than happy to help. Or, you are most welcome to call Product Support Hotline at: 1(888) 678-3688. Also, you can chat with an ASUS live support agent from the link: https://www.asus.com/us/support/article/1135/.

Thank you for choosing an ASUS product.

Router worked great with the firmware that came out of the box. After updating the new firmware wouldn't assign over 100 Ethernet connect devices. Had to assign each manually. I've since upgraded to the ET12 Mesh what a huge improvement.

Router works well however the coverage is not the greatest. I have the unit centrally located upstairs in my home which is 2200 square feet. Coverage in other rooms can be spotty and sometimes very weak. My suggestion would be that this router would work well in single story homes under the mfg. square footage size and utilize a more powerful router in larger or two story or greater homes.
