Customers are saying
Customers consistently note the strong performance and spacious SSD as major positives, frequently praising the large screen size and capable graphics card for gaming. However, some users point to issues with fan noise and the touchpad's responsiveness. The lack of a CD drive and the 60Hz refresh rate were also cited as drawbacks by a few customers.

Good buy except!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I have worked in IT infrastructure for 20+ years so I have worked with Asus motherboards since the 90’s. The Good! - Great form factor 17” laptop in a 15” body is awesome! But still a little heavy, but manageable. IPS panel but only at 60hz, good integrative graphics 1060 3gb, although the 6gb version would have been better. Supposedly Military grade durability (possibly questionable see bad) this should be on all laptops. Decent 500gb NVME Intel QLC SSD hard drive. 16gb 2666 DDR4 single chip so can upgrade, questionable whether it can run at 2666 see the bad. Space for a 2.5 Sata 3 SSD hard drive to add more space, I added a Samsung 2TB SSD. At this point in time this is one of the better deals for what you are getting but only at $999 in my opinion as the corner cutting on hardware is priced accordingly. The Bad! - 60hz panel has really bad light bleed during black scenes or even boot up, this makes the panel look cheap. The advertised 120hz on ASUS website for this model may be a better panel and less light bleed, but not sure. Upgraded the RAM to 2x8GB Crucial DDR 4 2666 memory to enable Dual channel on the memory controller, but CPU Z shows it’s only running at 2400 speed, this must be a BIOS issue that can hopefully be resolved with a BIOS update from ASUS. But oh the BIOS is so so basic even under the advanced setting, it’s obvious they do not want anyone in the BIOS with how basic it is, practically Zero control over anything and you can’t even adjust memory settings, prob the worst BIOS I have ever worked with using ASUS products. Getting into the motherboard area to upgrade requires Laptop tools, the clips that keep the bottoms case on are very fragil and can break easy which begs the question is this really military grade? I hope ASUS will put more effort in a revision or next gen of this product, and update the BIOS to support 2666 memory speeds and give us more control over Memory and Storage, also adding USB-C and thunderbolt in the future! Keep bringing us a Tough, Compact high performance quality product at a great price will always be a winner ASUS! Hope this is helpful!

Great Computer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great computer so far, larger screen, has a 1060 graphics card with 3G dedicated ram and 16G of other ram, also has a 500GB SSD and a slot to upgrade up to 32G ram. Great CPU wish it had a 4K screen and all Microsoft office products activated though. Great for gaming and watching videos don’t experience any lag. Best portable gaming PC for your money.

Excellent laptop!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pros: • Runs pretty much every game I throw at it on ultra settings with 60fps or higher. • The display is beautiful, with really thin bezels and a gorgeous matte finish so no glare! • Excellent viewing angles • Adequate cooling, despite what some other review sites have said. I never break 79°C when playing games like Overwatch on ultra @ 1080p for hours. • The specs are comparable to Asus ROG laptops, just without all of the 'luxury' items. This laptop is like buying a Mercedes-Benz but opting out of color changing dash lights and sheepskin seat covers. Still the same machine under the hood, just less flash. • 16GB of RAM, but still upgradeable to 32GB. The do the 16GB in a single stick, too! A lot of companies would do 2x8GB so you have to buy the whole 32GB instead of tossing in a second 16GB stick. • Comes with a baggie of screws for the caddy to install an internal SATA drive. I was able to throw a 1TB HDD in it to expand my storage. Now onto the cons: • It's listed as having a RGB keyboard backlight. This is false. It's locked to red, even if you install the Asus Aura software for their RGB-enabled machines. • The listing also says it has a card slot for SD cards. It does not. Get your crap together, Best Buy! • This version, for some reason, only has a 60Hz IPS panel, which is odd because it has the 16GB RAM option, and the i7-8750H, as well as the 512GB SSD, which are all the best of the pre-installed options for the fx705, yet the display is not the 144Hz the 705 usually comes with. • The GTX 1060 is only the 3GB version. Now this is something Best Buy got right in their listing so I knew that before ordering... But it still would've been better with the 6GB version since it's got the 'best' of the factory options for everything else but the display. • No USB-C. Come on, Asus, this is a late 2018 laptop and no USB-C? Overall, I still give it a 5/5 because it's a powerhouse of a laptop for a very reasonable 'entry level' price tag. I just wish the listing had been correct, as I really wanted RGB lighting and a SD reader, and not listing the 60Hz refresh rate seems a little misleading because nowhere else on the internet is there any mention of there even BEING a fx705 with a refresh rate under 144Hz

Excellent Cyber Monday Deal
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This computer has been phenomenal for me thus far. I am very happy I chose to purchase this computer for $500 less than all of the other computers that I was considering. The screen quality is very good and the computer is fast. Great computer to use if you are looking for a computer with a Solid State HDD, at least 16 GB of Ram, a decent graphics card, and a quality i7 processor.

Very good but not perfect
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It performs extremely well as advertised. Very fast startup and very fast processing of tasks. It should deserve five stars if not for the followings. First of all, there is no SD-card reader as mention in its advertisement. There is only a three steps adjustment of the backlit keyboard. It will be better to have continuous backlit adjustment. When I handled the laptop in various position, I can hear clicking sound of a small object moving around. I try to move it to the front end corner and the it works with no problem so far. I will open the case and find out what's inside after the warranty expired. The laptop generates some mechanical noise when the SSD is working. Laptop with SSD only should be quiet except for occasional noise from cooling fan of the processor. Lastly, ASUS will not automatically update BIOS. Users need to find out available update and install themselves.

Powerful options at a reasonable price...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Okay, I did get this on Black Friday, but I'm impressed with the upgraded 16GB memory, 512BG SSD and graphics card. Pretty fast and display is really crisp and clear. Only drawbacks are when I'm working really large imagery files, the fans are running triple time and I'm waiting for sparks and smoke to start pouring out of the back then it blasts through the ceiling, but that hasn't happened yet, sounds like SpaceX though. Oh, and no SD card slot, pretty lame they forgot that. Oh well, I would buy it again. It's a slick machine.

Solid computer that can do extra
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For the price of 1000 on a black Friday add this computer is great. Can do what you need plus more. The 512 m.2 is substantial in your daily needs and enough room to put extra games on, and runs pretty fast. We were able to play games fairly easy with not as good of fps i was hoping for, around a 100 on fortnight. One thing that really tipped the scale for us was the track pad my wife and I wanted this for multi-function school and games. however the size was a touch to big, OK to bring around just a tad awkward. A huge reason to return was the fact that the monitor was not 144hrz as I Originally thought. All and all its a great laptop that wasn't for me, I would recommend for someone who is getting into PC gaming or just wants a solid laptop that can run almost anything with a 17 inch screen. We ended up going with the msi leopold that has a 1070, it just is the versatile computer that we needed and that play anything and be a desktop set up at home and a school laptop on the go. Something the this computer couldn't do due to the lack of ports on the side only 1 hdmi and no mini dp is hard.

Great Computer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I don't game with this computer, I use it for business purposes. I have a lot going on, and I have to run a lot of programs, and have a lot of browser windows open in 2 different browsers. Its super quick. Documents open up in 1/2 a second. Im not sure how this does for gaming, but if you use tons of programs and need to have a lot of browser windows open at the same time to move around quickly, this computer is great.

Great value for higher end specifications
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The dimensions of this laptop are small for a 17 incher. The battery life so far lasts a long while under light load. Specs are just under state of the art gaming rigs, yet this laptop costs much less. Asus has priced this unit very aggressively. I do not like the trackpad. It is not very tactile and just feels cheap. The only way around this is to use a mouse, which most gamers would do anyway, but I want to use the laptop on my lap for browsing and other light duty equally (which the smaller form factor lends itself to). Overall I looked for a good while for a 17 inch laptop and this was my choice. It seemed $250 less than the competition similarly optioned.

Worth the Money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. No issues with the laptop thus far, owned it for just over a month. The mouse touch pad is a bit difficult to use, but it doesn't matter since we have an external mouse. Didn't realize that none of our laptop bags would hold the device, but we're happy to have such a large screen and the number pad on the keyboard. If we needed another laptop, I'd consider buying another one. I'm happy with the purchase. Zero problems with the device out of the box.

Got it for a friend
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. My friend was looking for a new laptop as hers was going out slowly but surely, so I did some research and as Thanksgiving was approaching, I recommended this model, she was blown away by the speed of the SSD for everything and she can also play whatever with the 1060 installed on it, it's a very capable machine, and surprisingly thin for a high-end gaming machine.

Nice overall, great for the price.
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So far, it's been fast and stable. Seems well built except for the touchpad. Wasn't mentioned in the specs, but the monitor is only 60hz.

Great computer!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my first computer with a solid state drive and this thing boots up fast! Like 8 seconds fast. I haven’t used it too much for gaming but I bought it to edit videos primarily and it does that well. The screen size is another factor of why I bought it. The hard drive is limited and it does not have a cd/rom drive but other than that it’s a sweet machine.

Great gaming laptop
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Graphics are set to ultra on all my video games, mostly MMORPGs. Fps averages 70-80 and hasn't been choppy. Bought an extra 1Tb hard drive for additional space since it only came with a 512gb ssd, which is fine but I don't like my games being on the same hard drive as the OS. The only complaint I have is it gets hot during gameplay. Otherwise, it's great.

Everything but...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Everything is great except the speakers and the screen max brightness. The screen at max brightness is still very dull and gets even worse if you're off the charging cord, so I wish that were different. The speakers (2 intergrated stereo speakers) on my 8 year old laptop were way better than this laptop. This laptop's speaker (one!) is located near the screen and it doesn't have a lot of power. It is so hard to hear someone talk even with it at full volume. You will definitely be needing headphones or a Bluetooth stereo speaker. It works great for the high graphic games I want to play on Steam and for my loads of research I have to do for University. So even with two minor setbacks, it's a win for me!

Great gaming laptop under $1,000
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I was looking for gaming laptop around $1,000. It was very nicely fitted into my budget. I had not issue when I played Overwatch and few other 3D games. The only complaint was fan noise and beep sound while the machine running... I recommend to get a cooling pad if you are playing 3D games.

Nice computer
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We purchased this computer after our last one blue screened. So far super happy with the performance. The cooling seems to be adequate which has been a problem with some other laptops I’ve owned. I like the screen size - big enough for multiple windows, etc.
