There are a number of great deals this black Friday. I was torn between this laptop at $999... MSI G63 at $1300... Gigabyte Aero at $1749... Ultimately decided on this because of the value just too good to pass. And believe me when I tell you I have done a tons of research of deals on all sites. Before I go over the goods and the cons. Let's go over a basic hardware calculation so everyone understand what an amazing deal this is... GPU 1060 3GB: $200 + CPU i7-8750: $300 + PCI SSD 500GB: $120 + A Cheap 24inch IPS 1080 Monitor $140. + Windows 10 $100. + 16GB DDR4 Ram $120. The total come out to be $980... This does not include the keyboard, AC Router, Webcam, the case, oh yeah and putting the laptop together. Which only a very, very, very few of us have the ability to do... On a value perspective, this is an amazing deal. Now onto the review... This is perfectly for me as I will mainly use this laptop for the following: Excel work, web browsing, video watching, and a portable VR device. And the 5~6 hours of battery life is sufficient for my need. If performance is extremely important to you, and portability is not than MSI G63 might be a better option at $1300 If portability and battery life is extremely important to you than you might want to bite the bullet and check out the Aero 15x v8 at $1749. Monitor: Good: 17.3inch, thin bezel, IPS display. This is more than sufficient for Netflix, and excel work & creative work. (The 17.3 inch monitor is really helpful when it comes to duo tasking vs 15.4 inch, this laptop is one of the only one that is portable, good battery, sufficiently powerful, yet has a 17.3inch monitor!!!) Con: 60hz only. If you want to become the next best Fortnite player you'd want to get a monitor that is 120hz or more. At the very top level even a bit of advantage will make the difference. CPU: Good: i7-8750H this is by far one of the best CPU currently out there for laptops. Unless you want to shell out $2,000 plus for a desktop replacement. GPU: GTX 1060 3GB Good: Perform much better than a 1050ti, roughly 30% bench mark, and only a bit slower than a GTX 1060 6GB, roughly 5% benchmark. I tried running Arizona Sunshine, which is a pretty demanding VR Game, and the auto setting for it was on high, and the game play was smooth as butter. Weight: Good: For a 17.3inch laptop this beast is only at 5.73lbs and 1.1inch thin. Battery Life: Good: 5~6 hours on light work. This is on part or much better than most of the 17.3inch laptop out there. Ports: Bad: No SD card reader! Only USB 3.0 Gen 1, no Gen 2 ports, or Thunderbolt. Build: Neither: Rigged Plastic instead of Alumni. You are not going to find Alumni build at this price point with hardware this good. I do not see this as a Con as the laptop feels solid. Keyboard: Pro: Keyboard feels solid, if you push on it very hard it will bend, but even with really hard typing it did not bend at all. Touchpad: Con: By far the worst touchpad I ever used. but I plan to bring a mouse with me so this does not bother me much. Webcam: Pro: Regular webcam placed top side of monitor instead of under the monitor which is what you want unless you just want other people looking up your nose. LOL. I am an entrepreneur, and I find this is the perfect laptop to me. Not having the 120hz+ display makes me not want to play games on it. Yet the screen is good enough for everything else. The battery life is decent enough where I can spend a few hours at the coffee shop for a change of environment without having to haul the charger with me. It is also powerful enough for me to bring it to my girlfriend's to show her all the latest VR title. But everyone is a bit different be sure to choose the laptop that matches your needs and not just mine. Good luck out there, and may the force be with you this Holiday season to score everything you need :).

Pros: • Runs pretty much every game I throw at it on ultra settings with 60fps or higher. • The display is beautiful, with really thin bezels and a gorgeous matte finish so no glare! • Excellent viewing angles • Adequate cooling, despite what some other review sites have said. I never break 79°C when playing games like Overwatch on ultra @ 1080p for hours. • The specs are comparable to Asus ROG laptops, just without all of the 'luxury' items. This laptop is like buying a Mercedes-Benz but opting out of color changing dash lights and sheepskin seat covers. Still the same machine under the hood, just less flash. • 16GB of RAM, but still upgradeable to 32GB. The do the 16GB in a single stick, too! A lot of companies would do 2x8GB so you have to buy the whole 32GB instead of tossing in a second 16GB stick. • Comes with a baggie of screws for the caddy to install an internal SATA drive. I was able to throw a 1TB HDD in it to expand my storage. Now onto the cons: • It's listed as having a RGB keyboard backlight. This is false. It's locked to red, even if you install the Asus Aura software for their RGB-enabled machines. • The listing also says it has a card slot for SD cards. It does not. Get your crap together, Best Buy! • This version, for some reason, only has a 60Hz IPS panel, which is odd because it has the 16GB RAM option, and the i7-8750H, as well as the 512GB SSD, which are all the best of the pre-installed options for the fx705, yet the display is not the 144Hz the 705 usually comes with. • The GTX 1060 is only the 3GB version. Now this is something Best Buy got right in their listing so I knew that before ordering... But it still would've been better with the 6GB version since it's got the 'best' of the factory options for everything else but the display. • No USB-C. Come on, Asus, this is a late 2018 laptop and no USB-C? Overall, I still give it a 5/5 because it's a powerhouse of a laptop for a very reasonable 'entry level' price tag. I just wish the listing had been correct, as I really wanted RGB lighting and a SD reader, and not listing the 60Hz refresh rate seems a little misleading because nowhere else on the internet is there any mention of there even BEING a fx705 with a refresh rate under 144Hz

I have worked in IT infrastructure for 20+ years so I have worked with Asus motherboards since the 90’s. The Good! - Great form factor 17” laptop in a 15” body is awesome! But still a little heavy, but manageable. IPS panel but only at 60hz, good integrative graphics 1060 3gb, although the 6gb version would have been better. Supposedly Military grade durability (possibly questionable see bad) this should be on all laptops. Decent 500gb NVME Intel QLC SSD hard drive. 16gb 2666 DDR4 single chip so can upgrade, questionable whether it can run at 2666 see the bad. Space for a 2.5 Sata 3 SSD hard drive to add more space, I added a Samsung 2TB SSD. At this point in time this is one of the better deals for what you are getting but only at $999 in my opinion as the corner cutting on hardware is priced accordingly. The Bad! - 60hz panel has really bad light bleed during black scenes or even boot up, this makes the panel look cheap. The advertised 120hz on ASUS website for this model may be a better panel and less light bleed, but not sure. Upgraded the RAM to 2x8GB Crucial DDR 4 2666 memory to enable Dual channel on the memory controller, but CPU Z shows it’s only running at 2400 speed, this must be a BIOS issue that can hopefully be resolved with a BIOS update from ASUS. But oh the BIOS is so so basic even under the advanced setting, it’s obvious they do not want anyone in the BIOS with how basic it is, practically Zero control over anything and you can’t even adjust memory settings, prob the worst BIOS I have ever worked with using ASUS products. Getting into the motherboard area to upgrade requires Laptop tools, the clips that keep the bottoms case on are very fragil and can break easy which begs the question is this really military grade? I hope ASUS will put more effort in a revision or next gen of this product, and update the BIOS to support 2666 memory speeds and give us more control over Memory and Storage, also adding USB-C and thunderbolt in the future! Keep bringing us a Tough, Compact high performance quality product at a great price will always be a winner ASUS! Hope this is helpful!

My previous computer 'died' quite unexpectedly. I brought it to the Geek Squad and they determined the mother board was 'fried'. I had two choices, buy new or repair. I decided to purchase a new computer and went by the recommendations of the Tech. I indicated I wanted one like my 'old' computer only NOT an HP. He searched what was available and unfortunately, what fit my needs the most was not available in the store and had to be ordered. First disappointment: The first time I saw the machine was when I picked it up from the Geek Squad after the setup. I didn't realize the system lacked an optical drive. I still have many sewing files/programs on CDs and had to purchased an optical drive. That's not that big a deal EXCEPT that to use it requires the use of two of the three available USB ports. The third USB port is used by my mouse. Second disappointment: No facial recognition system on this computer. I travel a bit and it was nice having the facial recognition system on my 'old' computer so that I didn't have to enter a password every time the computer went to sleep. I could leave it in a hotel room and felt I didn't have to worry about someone accessing my files while I was out. Third disappointment: The system is VERY SLOW to wake up. Not sure why that is but my last two laptops were on in seconds (the previous ASUS laptop I owned before the HP that just died, had an "Instant ON feature") after moving the mouse. This computer has to 'think about it' for 10 seconds or so... Sometimes moving the mouse or touching the touch pad fails to wake it and I have to touch the power button to bring it 'back to life'... Bottom line: If I had it to do over, I would NOT buy this computer. I've already started looking for another system. Usually I am able to research a system before purchase. The fact that my computer 'died' unexpectedly (only 3 years old and the techs felt it was a parts failure that allowed the power to 'dump' into the system thus 'frying' the motherboard) did not allow for that research period. I realize that optical drives are becoming obsolete but, there are still some of us who do need/use them. I'm sure this is a nice computer for some users... just not me.

Just received via Best Buy 1-day shipping, and it arrived on time in perfect condition. Before I turned on the computer I easily opened up the computer and put in a 1TB SSD and an additional memory stick. The computers 16GB is on ONE SODIMM. I had an extra 8GB module at the same speed, and it worked flawlessly. The only thing I did have to do was go into bios and change boot order to ensure it was booting from the 512 PCIe disk. The computer itself is plastic, but textured and looks great. The backlighting is red only, but it looks good. The keyboard feels good to me and seems like most any other keyboard I've ever used. The touchpad works well and has good clickiness for the buttons. The screen is big and bright and looks great to me. During gaming the CPU does reach high temps, but it seems the i7-8750h can handle these high temperatures by design. The GPU, however seems to hold a good decent temp. Overall this is finally the computer I have been waiting for. It's only $999 now and includes all the features I had been looking for, and doesn't include anything I don't need.

Bought this on the Black Friday deal. It's a good PC but was disappointed mostly in the sound quality or rather the lack of sound. It may sound good using a headset for gaming but I am more of a power user than a gamer and really don't want to have to be wearing a headset all the time while viewing, editing videos or whatever I'm working on for that matter. Nor am I interested in adding external speakers be it bluetooth or whatnot to have to haul around with my PC. The audio from the standard PC speakers is so low that I would call it nearly inaudible. And that's with the volume at 100%. A 1960's ara transistor radio as better audio than this thing. I've looked and researched all over the web and ASUS hopefully for driver updates and or fixes that would resolve this issue and came up nil. There is no fix for this at this time. There is an audio software program preinstalled call DTS Audio where you can set equalizer levers and add some boost. Though it does increase the volume a little bit it mostly just causes distortion in what little audio you already have. Other issue is there is no card reader slot as advertised. I do like the SSHD. Graphics card is good but could've been better. With that being said it is still a good PC. I will recommend this PC but only if listening by using the built in speakers isn't an issue for you.

For the price of 1000 on a black Friday add this computer is great. Can do what you need plus more. The 512 m.2 is substantial in your daily needs and enough room to put extra games on, and runs pretty fast. We were able to play games fairly easy with not as good of fps i was hoping for, around a 100 on fortnight. One thing that really tipped the scale for us was the track pad my wife and I wanted this for multi-function school and games. however the size was a touch to big, OK to bring around just a tad awkward. A huge reason to return was the fact that the monitor was not 144hrz as I Originally thought. All and all its a great laptop that wasn't for me, I would recommend for someone who is getting into PC gaming or just wants a solid laptop that can run almost anything with a 17 inch screen. We ended up going with the msi leopold that has a 1070, it just is the versatile computer that we needed and that play anything and be a desktop set up at home and a school laptop on the go. Something the this computer couldn't do due to the lack of ports on the side only 1 hdmi and no mini dp is hard.

It performs extremely well as advertised. Very fast startup and very fast processing of tasks. It should deserve five stars if not for the followings. First of all, there is no SD-card reader as mention in its advertisement. There is only a three steps adjustment of the backlit keyboard. It will be better to have continuous backlit adjustment. When I handled the laptop in various position, I can hear clicking sound of a small object moving around. I try to move it to the front end corner and the it works with no problem so far. I will open the case and find out what's inside after the warranty expired. The laptop generates some mechanical noise when the SSD is working. Laptop with SSD only should be quiet except for occasional noise from cooling fan of the processor. Lastly, ASUS will not automatically update BIOS. Users need to find out available update and install themselves.

I was not happy to find out that there is no SD card slot, even though the original Best Buy ad said there was one. I have to use the USB ports and an SD card adapter. The USB ports sometimes need multiple retries to recognize devices. Also they are spaced very close to each other, requiring me to remove one USB item and let the slot stay empty in order to accomodate the width of the sd reader. I bought this computer to be able to do photo editing and was not expecting to not have a functional SD reader. I have the computer 3 months and already I get the big error screen.... microsoft is collecting data... etc. requiring me to turn the computer off and on and restarting it. This occurs at least 4 times a week. I was hoping that I would at least get a year of use before that started up. I had to buy this computer because my previous Dell graphics card would freeze and I would have to reboot. As far as the speed is concerned it is decent.

This laptop can run the majority of games at high setting with some FXAA shaders and anti alias up to x16. The screen itself provides great clarity, this is a must for games that render in the background with environments moving like the wind impacting that grass in tombraider. I recomment this laptop to last 2 to 4 years for serious gamers. CONS: This is strictly for gaming....streaming is a pain because you run into a RAM bottle kneck. If you plan o streaming, get more RAM 32GB or 64GB. 16GB is strictly for high/ultra resolution gaming. This laptop runs hot, I highly recommend a laptop cooling pad that has atleast 2 to 4 fans that blow cool air into the laptop as the processor and gpu can heat up to 90+ degrees. I bought the $20 cooling pad and it was well worth it

The first one I received via the mail had dead pixels out of the box. It was easy to exchange at my local store, no big deal. Four days later I had a replacement. No dead pixels on this one. However, I noticed that I couldn't update the 1060 drivers. After trying the handful of normal processes you take to try and update the driver, I had to turn to support. Asus and Nvidia were not able to update it, or figure out why it wouldn't. Asus' only recommendation at the end was to buy a 6gig ram 1060 instead of the 3 gig one that it comes with. We did everything. Hours later, I decided to return it for a refund. I'll try another Asus model next time. It was a nice laptop top. If the GPU was able to update to the current driver and not just the Asus supplied driver (which is old), I would have kept it.

First off, this is the best deal I could find for a 17.3" Laptop. I spent hours and hours looking and this on a sale was the best deal I could fine for a gaming laptop. I ran Fallout 76 on Ultra and got about 50-60 FPS for serval hours. Its not 144HZ but to really get good quality on 144HZ you need to run games at 144 FPS and 60HZ is not bad at all. It is not a 6GB 1060 but at a $999 price point you normally get a 1050 or 1050TI which this blows out of the water. I highly recommend and I didn't really have heating issue either. I am also using a cooling pad though.

My biggest gripe is the inability to verify my google account to access preloaded system garbage via GEForce experience. I can login to google w/ credentials but unable to verify via text email nothing on Nvidia side. Can not access basic settings to try to fix altered Win 10 interface (simple things like Alt+Tab not functioning). Also Microsoft will not stop harassing you about DL'ing other web programs. First time you open Edge it begs you not to leave. Do a search for "Opera Download" results Bing will tell you its garbage. Tried to install a PW manager program got a response saying, "Administrative Privileges Required, Contact System Administrator" WHAT>! I can not access basic settings on a brand new PC. My 5 year old HP trashtop gives me no trouble, but a brand new ASUS will not let me change my calendar...

Everything is great except the speakers and the screen max brightness. The screen at max brightness is still very dull and gets even worse if you're off the charging cord, so I wish that were different. The speakers (2 intergrated stereo speakers) on my 8 year old laptop were way better than this laptop. This laptop's speaker (one!) is located near the screen and it doesn't have a lot of power. It is so hard to hear someone talk even with it at full volume. You will definitely be needing headphones or a Bluetooth stereo speaker. It works great for the high graphic games I want to play on Steam and for my loads of research I have to do for University. So even with two minor setbacks, it's a win for me!

If you are a simple gamer like me, just looking for a general computer that can play video games and not need any upgrades right away, this is the computer for you. I took a long time trying to find a computer that not only just played games, but I didn't want to purchase a computer and need to update it right away. By all means, I plan to do some upgrades on it later. But for right now, it's perfect. I mainly play Ark Survival and online games like Dead by Daylight, and they run wonderfully. I also do school work on it and it is a very fast computer. My older one was very slow (connecting to the exact same wifi), this one loads and works very well. Highly recommend it for beginner gamers. And the price is worth it!

This laptop was a beautiful piece of equipment both visually and overall performance wise. I was incredibly happy with it -- For the first 30 days or so. The design was great, ran perfect, but suddenly the monitor went black. The backlight worked and the computer ran fine but the screen remained black. I was going to send it in under warranty for repair but opted to return for fear of further issues given it was only a month old. It was being used for my business and shoddy tech is a BIG no no. Ended up with the Lenovo Legion y530 instead. Graphics card was a step down, but at least I know lenovo puts out solid product.

Overall I would say this is a decent laptop. Picture is great, keyboard is awesome, it's pretty thin and relatively light for the power that it packs. My only complaint is the noise level when running multiple tasks. You can easily hear the fan spool up and it's pretty dang loud. I suppose if you had a gaming headset on you wouldn't even notice. Again, for the money, the power it packs and overall look and functionality, it's a great machine. This is my first ASUS, hoping it keeps for a while.

Okay, I did get this on Black Friday, but I'm impressed with the upgraded 16GB memory, 512BG SSD and graphics card. Pretty fast and display is really crisp and clear. Only drawbacks are when I'm working really large imagery files, the fans are running triple time and I'm waiting for sparks and smoke to start pouring out of the back then it blasts through the ceiling, but that hasn't happened yet, sounds like SpaceX though. Oh, and no SD card slot, pretty lame they forgot that. Oh well, I would buy it again. It's a slick machine.

Went to Best Buy and got the HP I7-by1033dx and it has the i5-8265u and runs faster than the Asus ! ( But it shouldn't). For $475.00 its worth it over $999.
