I purchased this computer and was unable to add software to it. It had very little capacity for high quality video.

Seems like a cheap computer, the setting changes when the cursor gets close to the setting, very sensitive. Very annoying!

I had been looking for one of these for quite a long time because for one I like Asus. Mainly because they do very little outsourcing, and make about 90% of their own parts. They also manufacture parts for the biggest part of computers on the market today. Motherboards, graphics cards (for desktops), DVD drives, RAM etc. Also I love the MacBook appearance that this has. And it really is built very well, without being overly heavy, though it is bulky. But that makes it feel a lot less cheap than the materials used. The brushed silver aluminum is great, and doesn't show fingerprints at all. And looks very professional. Other Pros and Cons
Pros
-Great keyboard, although the keys are thick and raised up pretty high, they are very responsive, and that's what I'm typing this review on.
- DVD Drive for this price point is great, just in case
- Bluetooth 4.0, 1 3.0 USB port, 1 2.0 port for fast or basic transfers. A VGA hookup (which is extremely rare on computers today).
- Great sounding speakers, with just enough umph to have some bass without sounding tiny. Also using the blue tooth sounds great.
- The Pentium 1.6ghz processor is a Quad Core not a Dual Core like some reviews have said. No it's not the fastest, but it gets the job done for basics. Actually really zippy/snappy.
- Screen is nice and bright, also dims itself instead of just going to a screen saver.
- USB sleep charging. (charge any device while the PC is in sleep mode).
- Track Pad has been improved a lot, very soft, good finger gesture movements. Also a key to turn it off. Unlike HP. Who have never had that option. And no full size HP's at this price will have Bluetooth, and many not even a DVD drive either. Also many don't come with a full HDD like this one. Which of course is 500gb. I use external storage a lot, so this isn't any issue, and I also own two other more "powerful" computers.
- Computer barely even runs warm, NEVER gets hot at all.
- Boots up fast
CONS-Not many
- Fan can be a little loud, with a slight buzz, but really only if your in a room where you can hear a pin drop. With no other noise.
- Computer runs well, but under heavy load you will notice it slow down. Then again it's not made for heavy video editing, or heavy gaming.
- Webcam (as with most) is very mediocre. VGA only. Also SD card slot is full size, but the card doesn't click in. Minor issue.
- While using Bluetooth it will interfere somewhat with your wireless internet connection. Just slightly slow it down. Which is normal at times.
So other than that I higher recommend this computer for anyone wanting a good basic computer for everyday use. Work, travel, school and what not. Asus is also right under Apple for reliability, which is great. I don't think they've ever been rated below 3 or 4. Much better than Dell or HP. And for 279$ you're just not going to get this much PC for that price. Especially with everything you get. ;o) Enjoy.

I got this computer while it was on sale for 219.00. At first while booting up there were some problems signing in but it was resolved with a full reset on this computer. Setup and updating takes forever but other than that this computer is quick and snappy with microsoft office and just looking at videos in general. I recommend this especially if you're a college student. The only drawback i can think of is the battery life(4 hours) but it shouldn't be a problem if you keep your ultra portable battery charger with you.

Clunky, missing a few basics

I bought this for my son to use academically. It works, but really needs some attention to detail. There's no indicator light to show if the number lock key is off or on, so for a child, this sometimes becomes an issue when he's trying to input passwords and doesn't realize the number lock key is off. There's also no indicator light on the caps lock key. I dislike the way the keyboard is laid out, with the keys so far apart. I'm trying to teach him typing, and everything about the keyboard feels clunky. The screen isn't overly bright, and I find myself trying to adjust the brightness up, only to realize it's already maxed out. Initial start up is s.l.o.w. Sometimes the volume adjustment on the screen doesn't work, and we have to adjust the volume with the function keys.
One thing this laptop does have going for it is great speakers. Nice and loud compared to my other laptops. I also really like the exterior of the laptop. It's shiny and doesn't seem to retain smudges and fingerprints like my Dell does.

So slow it is not worth owning. I was surprised a laptop could be so cheap. I should have been more suspicious. The store should not even stock such an item.

Before I purchased this laptop, I opened a chat session with the Best Buy customer service and confirmed that I would be able to upgrade the memory from its current 4 GB. After confirmation, I ordered it. It was as slow as I anticipated when I got it. I called Geek Squad, confirmed again that I could upgrade, and ordered the memory card I needed. I dropped it off with Geek Squad and when they opened it up to install the card, the discovered it can't be upgraded. I wouldn't have bought this had I been given accurate information. Now let me tell you about the performance of this laptop. It's terrible. You can't have more than one application open and have any speed whatsoever. Even then it crawls. Booting up takes minutes. Opening an application takes minutes. Don't waste your money on this, regardless of the sale. It makes a better paper weight than anything.

Initially I was worried about the processor speed, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is quick and efficient. The casing is not flimsy or cheap looking but sleek and stylish. Only thing I wish it had was a backlit keyboard. Other than that, this laptop is exceptional, especially at this price!

My computer is on it's THIRD hard drive. I have reset it twice in two weeks, it works for a day then tells me I am "running script". It runs so slow, I cannot get it to do anything when I try to correct it. Now the "Edge" web browser has disappeared so I cannot access the internet. Taking it back to Best Buy tomorrow and they can trade it, keep it, I don't really care. Last time at BB, a man in line behind me at the Geek Squad had the exact same model and it wouldn't even boot up brand new out of the box. Buy this computer at your own risk.

I bought this because of the number pad. But every time I try to hit "0" with my thumb, I hit the arrow instead. If you know how to work a 10 key, don't get this. If you peck at the numbers, you will be fine.

Buyer Beware

We purchased an Asus laptop in the past and while it aged poorly, it functioned well enough to get our daughter through two school years.
However, we purchased a new Asus laptop for our daughter at the beginning of the last school year and had problems from the start. The laptop constantly turned off whenever she moved it with the screen up. The store was kind enough to let us return it, but the replacement did the same thing. The Geek squad sent the second one into Asus and Asus replaced the mother board. When we got it back, it lasted about 2 weeks and then the battery failed. The battery was not covered by the warranty and we did not buy a repair plan for it (why would you, if you only need it for one year?). My daughter never did get to use it in school. We are in the market for a new laptop for this school year. Needless to say it will not be an Asus.

Slow booting up. Initial updates took 3+ hours. DVD drive didn't work well at all. Tried to install 3 programs using CD-rom and couldn't get any to work. One was Quicken, which is as mainstream as it gets. Drive made lots of noise but never completed installation. Web speed was slower than a 5 year old desktop. Not happy, will be returning.

Returning today after a full night of updates. Still haven't made it to a login screen and now the screen is just black. Better to spend the extra money and get a more reliable laptop.
